We stayed one night in the Premier Suite. It was very modernly updated (compared to the more vintage character of other rooms in this hotel), with exposed ceiling beams and what appeared to be original brick walls, located in a newer wing near the side of the building where Ella's Supper Club used to be. We heard rumors about this being one of Spokane's most haunted hotels and I can see how one might get a vibe that there's presence in the hotel. It was built in 1899, was abandoned for decades, and renovated. They did a beautiful job keeping up the historic aspects of the furnishings, and even the music in the halls was a little spooky. But rest assured, there were no spirits haunting our unit! Our room was adjacent to the Events Center and the building is structured such that we didn't hear the noise from the event going on at the time unless we put our ear to their door down the hall. It is easy to get lost because our room was in the 300's numbers but on the second floor, while other rooms in the 300's are on the third floor. There are two sets of elevators that take you to different parts of the connected buildings. If you're looking for the fitness center in the basement, don't use the elevator from the lobby or that will put you into the restaurant below. The amenities were great. It was like an entire apartment with a full kitchen and all the kitchenware to make it feel like home, plus it had a walk-in pantry. There was a big screen TV in every room and it was easy to hook up our own Firestick. I wished it had a second bathroom, and more hangers, as it does accommodate 4 people. The shower could use a shelf -- you have to put your bath toiletries on the floor of the shower. Bath robes and decor throughout made it cozy. The water vapor electric fireplace was a nice touch in the living room and we had a north facing view of the city surroundings. There was a dedicated room for washer and dryer, and they provide the detergents. The parking lot is small (about 15 spaces), and there's an overflow lot further away. There are several entry/exit doors on both First Av and Monroe St so that's a little confusing, but load in at the front entrance. It's conveniently located near the Fox and Bing theaters and several dining options. Our stay included free breakfast at Rosie's Restaurant. Overall a very nice stay! read more

We got set up in this hotel overnight because our flight was cancelled. I highly recommend, but I think we got insanely lucky. Ended up with a suite, which was larger than our apartment! It came with 2 bedrooms each with a king bed, a giant bathroom, and luxury throughout the huge place - high ceilings, exposed brick, a view of the theater, and a huge open living room/lounge/kitchen area. If you are travelling with a large group, I highly recommend this room. Also - it was a delight to turn on the fake fireplace. More like an art piece. It looks like a mysterious set of orange lights, but if you give it a few minutes you'll be surprised (won't give it away). I really appreciated that the bedrooms were almost completely light blocked - no windows, and doors that shut well. We got a fantastic night sleep. The front desk was also really nice. Located within walking distance to music hall and the restaurant attached packs to go for room with real utensils! Upon request they brought a light blue cover for bed because everything is white and I didn't want my dog to mess up white sheets blankets and comforter. Would definitely stay again. This hotel was ok. It looks nice and has a working elevator. However, you have to scan your room key to make it work, and the scanner is not at a wheelchair-accessible height. I was in the disabled room on the top floor. The shower is fully wheelchair accessible. The sink is not. The bed is very very high off the floor as well. They do not have accessible parking. The shelf in the bathroom is not disability accessible, and also it was dirty with soap spots and clearly had not been cleaned prior to my arrival. I also only received about a quarter roll of toilet paper, which was damp through several layers from them making a design with the faucet on it. They are advertised as dog friendly, which I was at first excited about-- I thought my service dog would have an easier time here. But they fail to mention that they do not have any pee spots within accessible distance. It's a several minute walk to a very small patch of grass. The map they gave me didn't even have the montvale on it which was weird. You know how hotels usually give you like four pillows and each is a different firmness? Not here. Six pillows, all so fluffy they were impossible to sleep on. One of the front desk workers was very nice and found me some flatter decorative pillows to try to sleep on which I appreciated. For the record, though I'm giving only 3 stars, the staff were very pleasant and professional. They have a communal hot drinks and hangout area on floor two. This is nice, but it also means that you can hear night owls hanging out and talking very late as all the rooms surround this area on both floors. Not the best experience but not terrible either. The cafe next door has some adequate gluten free options and good coffee. You get 10% off when you're at the Montvale. Overall I think this is a nice hotel for people who aren't disabled. On the site it seems great for a disabled person, but in reality they are lacking in that area. So be aware if you're disabled. read more

The woman working the night desk said we were double booked but that the manager would sort it out the next day. The next day the manager told us there was nothing they could due and we needed to check out by noon. No assistance to find alternate accommodations. While trying to find another hotel we had to get pack up, get groceries, check in to tournament and weigh in for the tournament. Spent a quick Friday overnighter here with the bff. She couldn't have selected a more perfect (though disappointingly not haunted) historic boutique hotel. Full of charm. Comfortable room. Friendly staff. Easy parking right behind the hotel for a reasonable nightly rate ($15?). And convenient walking distance to the best coffee next door (First Ave) and lots of restaurants and bars (we recommend Wooden City for dinner/drinks). I was concerned about reviews of paper-thin walls, but we hardly heard a peep. Maybe we lucked out with quiet neighbors (I know there was someone in the room next to ours because I heard their shower in the morning). It probably also helped being on the third floor without anyone above us. You could hear some street noise from there, but nothing that couldn't be easily ignored (I'm a light sleeper). The room was clean and apportioned well. The cost was appropriate. However, the noise in this place is awful. I travel 100 nights a year and this one gets the top spot for noise. I understand it's not their fault for the outside noise which is train tracks, bar noise and street racing but OMG, the creaking in this place will keep you up all night. The room above us was up until 2 am and therefore so were we. They have signs up about quiet hours but from the looks in the reviews they don't enforce and we agree. If you love antiques and old world ambiance then this is a good place to stay. This hotel has gone through phases over the decades and is a nice historic hotel now. I was super happy with my stay. Nothing supernatural or Trvl channel worthy. During these COVID times, I think I was one of the few staying the night. Slept like a baby. It is certainly not the largest or newest hotel I have ever stayed in. Feels like a trip back in time to a different era. Not sure what that era would be, though. Sometime before I was born. The entire hotel has a very pleasant aroma. When I checked in I thought it was the perfume of the attendant checking me in. It is all over the building and even in my room. One reviewer described it as a candy smell. I'm not sure that is accurate. It is kind of like walking into a candle store. Chamomile, maybe. We had plans to stay two nights at this hotel. We love historic atmospheres so this seemed perfect. We arrived after a late flight around 11:30pm. We checked in and showered and fell asleep. Around 2:00am we woke up to a stranger standing in our room. My boyfriend was yelling who are you, and the male ran out into the hall. My boyfriend ran after him and caught up in the hallway demanding to know what he was doing in our room. He said he was security and he checks empty rooms at night. My boyfriend then went back to the room got dressed and went to the front desk. They said they had forgotten to take our room off the lists to check and gave no reason as to why they need to check empty rooms at 2:00am. They seemed to act as if we overreacted to a stranger standing by our bed in the middle of the night. Why would he run and not just identify himself. We said we would be leaving as soon as possible since we did not feel safe there. I asked for a refund and they said they could not since it was through Expedia. So I spent the next hours between Expedia and the hotel trying to get our money back. The hotel never reached out and apologized for this incident. If I had been alone or he had come while I was showering, truly not acceptable. read more

BOO! No, that's not my review. The place is haunted. If my video posts on Yelp, I had a silly encounter with a ghost that kept flickering my lamp, seemingly answering my questions. When we inquired we learned that someone hung himself if our section of the hotel. I love this hotel, and I recommend it highly. It feels very historic (120 years old) and grand, though the price was outstanding (a third the price of our shitty motels in Idaho and Oregon). For being such a historic hotel (120 years old), the room was like a boutique hotel: the spacious, spotless room was attractive and nicely appointed with actual lamps, large windows, and a huge bathroom with dual high shower heads with awesome pressure, quality toiletries, etc. The wifi worked well. The staff were super nice. The bed was large and comfortable. The ghosts were pleasant and did not kill us. I mean, one asked me to kill my dad, but did so in a sweet, almost apologetic way, like it didn't want me to go out of my way to kill him. They do have a beautiful old-school second floor lobby, which is great if you like to be social or want to relax out of your room (but not great if people are too social and loud). Though any downtown can be a little sketchy, the location within the entertainment district is great. There were a lot of great bars within walking distance (we liked Baby Bar). If you eat out, bring home a doggie bag: they have both a fridge and a microwave! Not that you will need breakfast: the stay comes with a $5 off (each) purchase at Incredieggs or Inbreadable or Remarkabutter or something like that. read more

I stated in the suite behind the "Montvale" sign, and it was fun to see the lights of the town and the lit up sign at night outside the window. The bed was a king size and very soft and the room smelled very good and clean, took a bit to figure out the tv but when we did was super easy to navigate. My review is ONLY based off things the hotel can not control but should be address for people staying here. The room itself was very small but perfect for my stay as my husband and I were traveling to find property in Spokane and surrounding area during the day. The bathroom was about twice the size of the room and was just gorgeous! I'm 8 months pregnant so a good bath when we got back was just what I needed and this bathroom was ideal! The staff was 120% AWESOME! Travis was out host for the evening and he took time out of his busy night to bring a pregnant lady a robe and toothbrush as I forgot mine! He was friendly and kind and honestly the only reason I would go back. The feel and decor was just amazing and as someone who loves to live in olden times I truly felt at home here, now the cons -we were in room 314 and that faces the parking lot for the hotel and OMG the drama outside allllll night was crazy! There was a lady screaming at a man who claimed to have stolen her purse for 40 min then stopped suddenly and back at it 40 min later! Yikes!! The road traffic is very loud also. The structure is also apparently also very outdated as I could hear my upstairs neighbors tv until 1am and then they proceeded to take 3 showers which you can hear the water running the whole time, THEN they seemed to have a problem with the bed because I could hear the bed above for about an hour making noise, maybe intimate time or someone uncomfortable I'm not sure, it wasn't distinct enough to tell. All in all I got 2 hours of sleep! BUT with that being said the bed was aaammmaazziinngglly comfortable for a pregnant women! I know there isn't much the hotel can do, but if you are sensitive to any of these things you should be advised. They do however earplugs but I'm bot one to bother the staff every 5 min. Also even bigger con is the Gilded Unicorn was HORRIBLE! Food was cold AND burned! I posted a separate review but for anyone staying, do not eat there! read more

We didn't know really what to expect of this hotel based on the varied reviews, and it was wonderful!!!!! We were able to check in remotely early, asking for a room on a higher floor away from the elevator, and that is what we got. Our king room was spacious, clean, and well appointed. It had a small desk and chair, a regular sitting chair, a refrigerator, a microwave, two nightstands, and a comfortable king bed. The bathroom was much larger than what we have experienced at other boutique hotels. The requested bottle of red wine and glasses were waiting for us ($20), and the room's drinking glasses were also real glass - nice! There are plenty of amenities in the hotel. There is coffee and tea available on the 2nd floor. There is also ample seating on the second floor with a cozy fireplace. The staff is super friendly, parking is $10/day, and you can easily walk anywhere downtown from this location. We parked our car for most of the trip, as we were able to walk to the Riverfront Park and the areas many restaurants and wine tasting rooms. Totally convenient! The building itself is older, so the walls are thinner and the floors squeak. No big deal. There are also stairs and an elevator to get around the building. The elevator also goes down to The Guilded Unicorn, which is in the building's basement. This hotel is simply marvelous, and we look forward to returning! read more

Beautiful hotel with a great vibe. The place is beautifully decorated and felt almost homey. We had a standard queen room but it did not feel like your basic hotel room. The ceilings are very high and the room has huge windows making it feel much larger. The beds were very soft and comfortable and the bathroom was huge. The sitting area on the second floor is so comfy I wanted to curl up with a book in front of the fireplace. The place smelled great, not like a standard hotel, it had a warm comforting fragrance. The floors are squeaky but it only added to the charm and vibe. We were on the third floor so had no one above us, the room was very quiet. The place felt very safe, a key card was required to use the elevator and there was a front desk person all night. When it gets late you have to use a keycard to get in the building as well. We ended up paying for parking across the street because we did not realize thee was a lot in the back for $10 a night but we did not mind. Over all we loved our stay and will be staying here again. read more

Had a perfectly fine stay here. The location is central to downtown Spokane stuff and easy to get to the surrounding areas. Very convenient. Building is nice, interesting historic aspect with updated aspects that make it a decent place to stay. Walls are a little thin, though, and noisy neighbors can easily keep you up at night. Not the most accessible, though they do have elevators. Nice people staffing the front desk, super helpful when answering questions and giving us ideas for places to check out like Baby Bar and Satellite Cafe. The housekeeping staff were nice and did a good job. Restaurants here are nothing much and not worth visiting when there are so many other good places around. The area is pretty run down, lots of homeless folks hanging about and many folks passed out on the sidewalk when we were there. Spokane downtown for you. If that puts you off, better to stay in the burbs. read more

We needed a get away and found this Amazing Boutique Hotel in Downtown Spokane built in the lat 1800s. Beautiful remodel and the artwork all over the building was beautiful. The staff were very responsive to our needs, even opening up the gated and locked overnight parking right at the cutoff to be locked. Thank you. read more

This is my absolute favorite place to stay in Spokane. The hotel is very unique and the staff are very accommodating. This is the perfect location for downtown area food, drinks, fun and shopping. I usually park my vehicle at the hotel and just walk to dinner. There is plenty to do in the area. I stay at Montvale Hotel for my business trips, the staff know my room preferences now and everyone is really nice and helpful. My office is now located in Spokane Valley and there are plenty of hotels near the area (walking distance) but I will gladly make the 15 to 20 minute drive to Montvale instead. We almost went with the Davenport, given its reputation, but we were checking in late at night, so this place ( at HALF the cost) made more sense. It's just a place to sleep, right? Small-ish but cozy rooms. Well decorated and uber comfy bed. Free tea and coffee outside our room and the staff were SO nice and friendly!!! We've stayed at both Ruby's ( owned by same) and although they had their own charm, this place was awesome. The lobby's of each floor had fireplaces and common areas that I'd like in my home. As other reviewers say, this hotel was very clean, felt safe and it was great to have parking immediately behind the building. The second floor lobby was very nice as well. The room layout was a little difficult. In our room with 2 queen beds, there were only two small night stands and a single small chair. No dresser or any flat space to open a suitcase on or to set things down. The bathroom was very large, weirdly large, but with out enough towel racks, shelving or mirrors. Really - sleeps 4, towel space for 2. This could be easily remedied by management and would make the space much more usable. An additional mirror by the windows would have been useful as well. read more

I like the hotel very much. It's the oldest hotel in Spokane going back to 1899 and the building is quite charming. In a middle of 2nd and 3rd story there is large atrium with glass roof, so plenty of light. Hallways are furnished with true antiques and plenty of great lounging opportunities. Coffee and tea at all times provided. Rooms are quite specious, especially with the volume of 12 ft ceilings. There is bit to improve - large spacious bath with pedestal sink does not have a real space to put toiletries, a small table would do the trick. Pipes are bit noisy and since it's downtown you might hear a train. I slept thru, husband woke up. Midvale offers breakfast a block away in Ruby Hotel. I think they should just skip that part. Breakfast in a cocktail lounge was not only weird and unappetizing but also very weak on selection - hard boiled egg, cereal and waffle. I read several reviews comparing Midvale Hotel to Davenport a block away. We stayed there, too and liked it but I actually prefer Midvale. It has more uniqness, character, is not as stuffy as Davenport. The charm of the building simplicity and historic beauty has bigger draw for me, despite the quirks. Like most people who travel to Spokane, I wanted to stay at the historically glorious Davenport. But, the rumors about their "surprisingly affordable" room rates were not true in my case. The Montvale seemed to be the Davenport's modest older step-sister, and an okay compromise for about $130/nt. In short: the Montvale is FINE. Maybe even a little nicer than fine. So, if you're worried about finding something completely different than what's advertised, don't fret. The Montvale is actually nicer than the photos and website suggest. The Good: historic, downtown location on a street with cute boutiques. Comfy bed. Huge white tiled bathroom. Nice restaurant downstairs (Scratch - not affiliated with the hotel but literally attached). Lovely library / sitting room on the atrium level. Self-serve filtered water. The Not So Good: Scratchy towels. Cheap Toiletries. Old windows that let lots of street noise in. Limited staff (every time I went to the front desk, there was nobody there, and I had to wait around in suspense, waiting for someone to show up). Really weak free wifi. Rooms not thoroughly cleaned (there was an un-flushed toilet in my room when I checked in - eeeek!) So, the good & bad mostly balance each other out and make for a perfectly A-OK stay. I wouldn't be upset if I had to stay here again, but if you're used to deluxe hotel amenities, the Montvale will take some getting used to. On the other hand, if you like hotels with character and some quirks, the Montvale will suit you just fine! read more

The Montvale is the poor man's Davenport. This is a decent hotel that offers value and a decent location within walking distance to the cities hot spots. There are a few misses though. The hallways are a bit creaky and the wifi (complimentary) signal is inconsistent. The beds are comfortable, which is a priority but the air conditioning/heating (like the wifi) is can be a little off. The lobby area(s) are very inviting and like the old "library" feel. I actually felt more comfortable hanging out on one of the couches on the second floor than in my room. I'm "this" close to awarding The Montvale a 4 star review, but I'll see how you do on my next visit. read more

However, every room faces the street and the windows are old- making it pretty loud and drafty. The beds are a bit too squishy for my tastes as well. There is a free continental breakfast just across the street at Ruby's but it's definitely no frills. Some cereal, juice, and hard boiled eggs. There was a waffle iron but I didn't see any batter. The Montvale hosts a couple of restaurants and I had a chance to grab a glass of wine at the new Gilded Unicorn. It's a cool place in the basement and had a very eclectic and interesting menu. Overall, it was a decent stay for the price but if you're going for charm AND luxury, I'd choose the Davenport any day of the week. read more

A fun historic hotel. Rooms represent the low prices and its is next to the trains but it's still an enjoyable stay if you overlook the little issues and see the charms. High ceilings, lovely brick, wonderful lounge, lots of outlets. Nicks and poor repairs in bathroom walls, worn carpet, sheets don't fit so don't stay on beds, poor soundproofing on windows so nearby trains and bar are loud. Potential for some really neat businesses adjoining, but currently for lease. Enjoyed and will return. read more
