A throwback gem on Winterset's town square, Montross Pharmacy has EVERYTHING, but my highlight was their food counter in the back of the store. Thanks to Winterset legend and Donuts Unlimited owner Jim Sparks for his great recommendation. There is so much Winterset history here, and the level of customer service was exceptional. Great customer service from Kathy at the counter resulted in my first Port Tenderloin sandwich! Wowowowowowowowow. I had the Montross basket special, and the crinkle-cut fries were outstanding! I loved the pricing. I wanted to top it off with a slice of pie, but there was no room left! There is a soda fountain available, and it makes the whole experience terrific. read more

The food is great however the staff are unfriendly and rude. Typically get an exasperation that they're having to work or eye rolling when you walk. Don't expect management to do anything as it sounds like they don't care and it's been this way for years. If you want a good hamburger or tenderloin and can put up with less than happy people serving you it's a good place. read more

We stopped in to Montross Pharmacy here a while back when we were in the Winterset. To be absolutely honest I think my girlfriend had to use the bathroom... It's a nice little store, but one of the things that surprised me the most was the little lunch counter that operates inside of the pharmacy, their menu, and the daily specials. The prices were cheap comparatively speaking and I made a mental note to make sure to stop back by here if I was in the area around mid-day again. Besides being an operating pharmacy and a lunch counter they have a good selection of hard goods from counter top applicances to handmade local craft items. The people working here are genuinely friendly and pleasant to visit with! I find myself eating a cheeseburger basket here quite often. It is an old time lunch counter and the grill area they cook on is small, so be patient. You can't beat the price for the food. I have also been there for breakfast and again a good breakfast for a cheap price. The basic is 2 eggs , hashbrowns, and toast. You can add a meat for a dollar more. read more

This is what a local diner is all about. Check out my pic of this cinnamon roll and cup of coffee at counter at the back of Montross Pharmacy. While the restaurant was busy with groups of locals catching up with each other, this out-of-towner was greeted promptly and cheerfully. While the cup of coffee was good, I'd go back any day, any time for that Cinnamon Roll. First, that's real butter and enough of it on the roll. My waitress heated the roll for me and the butter slowly, and seductively oozed into that roll. The aroma was sinfully good. I enjoyed each, and every, caloric ladened bite. Go ahead tell my wife and Doctor I went off restrictions - I'll be good next week. It's worth it. Also keep in mind their pharmacy. It may appear small but they are mighty when you need them. Such a fun experience, and the food and service was outstanding. The omelette was a bargain and delicious.

Traveled 3 hours from home to Winterset because my Mom ordered a custom-built table from a local, and I traveled with her to pick it up. The man suggested we come here for breakfast. It's kind of cool to see this little diner tucked into a corner of a pharmacy! Prices are DAMN cheap! Only $4.99 for a breakfast plate. Our waitress was hella grumpy. Like, on the verge of being mean. She was NOT having a good morning. Maybe she was overwhelmed, but sheesh. We almost left until a customer moved at the counter so the 3 of us could sit together. That was very nice of him. I didn't even order coffee because I was afraid to ask our waitress for cream and sugar. Food was good, tho! Very good pancakes. I wanted to ask for peanut butter but I never got a chance. The 3 of us ate for $17! Can't go wrong with that! I doubt I'll ever come back because I never travel out this way. But if you're looking for a quick, cheap breakfast; this is a good spot. read more

We moved to a property about 20 minutes from Winterset about a year ago. I had seen this place, but never stopped in. Last week my family and I went for breakfast. The food was great! My wife had an omelette that was to die for. My eggs, bacon, and hash browns were awesome. My boys pancakes were tasty, light, and fluffy. The waitress was helpful and polite. If your in the area, STOP HERE! Next time I'll get pictures. Update. My wife and I came back for breakfast after dropping our kids off for the first day of school. Came here on a recommendation of a family member who lives in the area. Restaurant is in back of store with a counter and a few rows of tables/seats. Very friendly, small town atmosphere. Cook may have been having off day (holiday weekend), but pork tenderloin sandwiches were overcooked, dry & chewy. read more

The pharmacy service is horrible. They have repeatedly lied to my wife about calling her doctors for refills, when they did not. On every occasion this has happened the doctor said she received no call or message. I would suggest taking your business elsewhere - as much as I like local businesses, this is not one worthy of your hard earned money. read more

I think this place is great, they can compound meds which is rare unless you live in Europe. This alone has saved me allot of $$. The store is similar to the old fountain soda jerk stores of early. The people have been very nice to me. read more

The staff and pharmacists at Montross Pharmacy could not be any nicer! I'm on two medications that are difficult to find in my area and the pharmacists go out of their way to special order it for me every month. They make sure my medicine is there waiting for me on the day I need it and always at the correct dosage. At my previous pharmacy, there was always some mixup or delay, causing a great deal of anxiety and stress... and requiring numerous phone calls every month. I can't tell you what a relief it is to know that the staff at Montross can be trusted and relied upon for such an important aspect of my life.
