I thought my tooth had fallen out while eating a piece of cheddar... BUT, thankfully, it was just a filling. An uncomfortable unsightly crater in my tooth is what led me to Dr. Smith, and I'm so glad it did! The entire staff is pure joy to work with, and Dr. Smith is simply a tooth magician. Even though I was a new patient they effortlessly scheduled me for a same-day appointment. I've been scheduling appointments for another patient with Jon, Houston's #1 dentist office manager, for about two years. He has always been incredibly accommodating, and his charisma brightens my day. My experience with Dr. Smith was absolutely incredible. So personable and informative, within mere moments I felt totally comfortable with him. How many people can say that about someone who's about to stick tools and needles into their face hole? Dr. Smith is the only dentist that can make injecting anesthetic painless AND hilarious. He pinched my cheek and shook my face profusely, then before I knew it, my face was numb as nuts. He was patient and thorough as we discussed my options. After suggesting a filling over a crown, he said, "That's what I would want to be done to me." It's obvious that he cares for his patients to the highest degree. Through the sound of drills and waterjets, I could hear him explaining each step of the process. In no time at all, he was done, and my once repulsive tooth hole was better than ever. At one point Dr. Smith jokingly called himself the Michelangelo of teeth. While my filling didn't resemble a dude with his d*ck out, it was nothing short of a work of art. Everyone needs to go to the dentist, but it doesn't have to suck. In fact, it's a chore you can look forward to thanks to Dr. Smith and staff. Pro-tip: The office is moving to West Alabama (near Acadian Bakery) sometime around February 2019. read more

After avoiding the dentist for years, I finally put on my big girl panties and called Montrose DDS. I told the receptionist how very nervous and scared I was and she offered to call me every day before my appointment to make sure I was ok going. I went and got a treatment plan. I've since been in for a couple of cleanings and today had the first stage of work done. Haifa does a great job keeping me accountable at my cleanings. Dr. Carrell did the fillings and crowns for me today. He was so kind and patient with me. Explaining everything step by step. His assistant Ethel was also a gem. Everyone in the practice is so kind and patient and really made the experience less scary for me. I have more treatments to go- but I'm so grateful for everyone's patience and compassion. Dr. Smith is a very gentle dentist -- big plus for me -- and he and his staff are extremely nice. However, he is not as capable as he could be. He put in a tooth implant that fell out within a couple of months (the crown and the post implant it was attached to). I was in another country (Italy) for a long spell when that happened, and eventually went to a dentist there, who had to completely redo the procedure. She told me that no one seriously schooled in implant surgery would have ever done what Dr. Smith did: i.e., an immediate crown replacement. Rather, the correct course of action is to implant the posts, then wait for at least 3 months until bone forms around them, and only then put in the crown. In another instance, Dr. Smith told me that Invisalign would not be appropriate for me because my teeth were too crooked -- I would need the normal metal braces. My dentist in Italy, however, said that was ridiculous, and started me on Invisalign. A little more than 12 months later, my teeth are straight. So, bottom line: He's nice enough, and if you have only minor issues like filling a cavity, he's fine. But for major issues or surgeries, you should probably find someone else. read more

As a Feng Shui Master, I asked first if there was an operatory chair that was positioned so my back was not to the door. And there WAS, so I made my appointment. As I approached the area - this office is in an old Montrose home - I felt quite comfortable in the glory of the big oaks and the broad porches of the area. I stepped out of my car to hear birds singing, doves cooing, and to scent sweet breezes in the air. The vegetation was lush and healthy, as well as well-tended. The front door held a full length leaded glass piece of art. I stepped into a reception area painted in lovely warm colors, decorated with beautiful art and antiques, with classical music playing softly. The difference in the perception of treating the PERSON versus the WALLET was palpable. I was appreciated before I ever arrived, and I felt appreciated in my surroundings. Each person I met provided me with more information to help me make the best decisions for myself, rather than telling me what to do and what that would cost. They had the technology to allow me to see inside my mouth on a monitor what they saw, in real time. We were able to discuss each tiny detail, blow the image up if necessary, and evaluate together what was going on with my teeth. I was empowered as a patient to take responsibility for my dental care instead of being treated like a child who didn't know anything. I will look forward to my next visit! I HIGHLY recommend this dental office and the experience you will have within. You will find support, comfort, and ease in what, to most, is usually a disempowering, scary, and blind situation. read more

I have had terrible experiences with dentists which has caused me not to go as much as I should. I recently started having some dental problems and a friend recommended her dentist Dr. Smith. She told me how sweet he is and how he has a gentle manner about himself. After chatting with her about Dr. Smith, the first thing I did was search for his website, which is very impressive and informative. I called and made an appointment and boy were my expectations exceeded. First of all, I love the location. Its very convenient to almost anything in the city limits. Secondly, the office has beautiful decor: antique lamps, chairs and sofas...the office smells of vanilla and is very soothing. The staff is WONDERFUL...they address you by name. They are as courteous as can be and they treat you like you are part of their family. Dr. Smith is very kind. He is gentle in his manner. He takes the time to explain in detail what needs to be done. I have to say that I am very glad that I found him. I have a lot of dental work that needs to be done and Dr. Smith is my dentist for life. This is as good as it gets! read more

I just LOVE Bruce Smith! All the staff in his practice are wonderful... you get beaming smiles and hellos with your first name when you walk into the door. The waiting room is very cosy with a wonderful array of complimentary beverages, comfortable sofas and an original fireplace - all creating a very "welcome to our home" feeling as you settle in. As for the dentistry - it's top notch! I'm coming to the end of my invisalign and I couldn't be happier. My teeth are near perfect! Which is quite a bonus for me. I knew they would be good, but the results have exceeded my expectations. Finally, I have to stress the attention to detail at Bruce's practice. Having had to pay many visits in 9 months, especially at the beginning when the weather was chilly, all the staff treated me like a welcomed friend. They even prepared a heated a blanket for me to keep me warm while I had to sit in the chair for long periods... I have never had that level of care at the dentist before! Seriously.... Best. Dentist. Ever. Upon arriving, was immediately in love with the office being located in a cute house transformed into a dentist office and not some boring office building with white walls and fluorescent lighting. It really is a cute space. And they have VALET!!! :) Front desk staff was awesome. Very attentive and knowledgable about what was going on with paper work and the reason for my visit. Check up and cleaning went very well and then went back two weeks later to get some work done. Dr. Smith was so kind and totally understood about patients having "dentist phobia. He put me at ease and did everything he could to make sure I was relaxed and comfortable before starting any type of procedures. I love my dentist!!! You will not find another dentist like Dr. Smith in all of Houston. He is gentle and informative, has a wonderful staff of office personnel and hygenists and has the most beautifully appointed office I've seen. The building is an adorable bungalow in Montrose that was probably built in the 1930's. The individual rooms are decorated with antiques, gorgeous paintings and heavy drapes. It simply feels like you are in someone's home. If you have any stress associated with visiting the dentist, Dr. Smith is for you. Dr. Smith and his staff are wonderful. Valet service at a dentist office? Amazing. It's more like being welcomed into a home than going to the dentist, and I come from a family of dentists and hygienists. His staff is so welcoming and everyone goes out of their way to answer any questions you may have. Also, even though Dr. Smith is a cosmetic dentist, he doesn't try to force anything on you (some other places I've been have told me that I need Invisilgn immediately, need to replace crowns or fillings, etc.). This is the promised update to my previous review, I've now had roughly $1400 worth of work done by Dr. Smith (just the start of the long process of healing my neglected teeth). I'm glad to say that my previous impression of Dr. Smith and his work was spot on, in fact it went even better than I thought. I called Dr. Smith on Sunday because I was having searing pain coming from one of my molars (the one in front of the molar I had the previous root canal on), which isn't a surprise given the condition of my teeth. He quickly called me back and got me taken care of for the day then told me to schedule an appointment on Monday (today). I called them today at roughly 12:40pm in the afternoon about the appointment and they had me in the office at 1pm. He inspected the places I pointed out pain and determined that a root canal on the molar was likely necessary as well as fillings on a couple of nearby teeth in case it was referred pain (pain that isn't actually generated where it FEELS like it comes from, but rather from somewhere else and confuses your brain to think it's coming from a different location). They then got me scheduled to come back in at 4:50pm TODAY to get it done (remember, they knew nothing about any of this until I called him yesterday)! So, I take off from work a bit early and go back in.. They have everything ready and I didn't even get a chance to sit down before they swept me into the (rather nifty and almost brand new Therapedic) dentist chair. Dr. Smith's office makes a big deal about how he believes in painless dentistry, and I can now positively confirm that this is true. Here's everything that was done to prepare for the procedure: 1) Given Nitrous Oxide 2) After a few minutes, injected anasthetic 3) Injected MORE anasthetic (half of face really starting to feel numb and kinda goofy from the NO by now) 4) Injected even MORE anasthetic (cannot feel ANYTHING except a dull pressurewhen they touch the very sensitive teeth with their tools now) 5) Did the trimming/cleaning stuff they do for the fillings - note there was NO pain, as I said only a bit of pressure 6) As he was working on the extremely sensitive root canal molar, I started feeling a little bit of pain... He then stopped and immediately injected more local anasthetic until I could not feel it again 7) Apparently during root canals he also applies anasthetic inside the tooth as the root canal operation goes on to ensure no pain, but I didn't experience that because.... HE DIDN'T DO THE ROOT CANAL! Now this was impressive, especially for people (like my mom) who are very skeptical of health care providers and who believe they're always out to shake their customers down for tons of cash... I had already given the okay to get the $950+ dollar root canal done. However, after he'd attached the tarp, gotten everything all set to do it, and started cleaning the area around the tooth, he said "Jack I don't see an actual opening to the nerve, I don't feel it would be ethical for me to go through with this root canal as it may not be necessary." He then just did a filling on the tooth and gave me anti-inflammatories to calm the inflamed nerves inside the tooth. After I'd already given the go ahead for the $900+ root canal and he could have easily kept quiet and done it, he chose to try something else costing much much less to help save me money!!!!! I don't see any way that a dentist could prove they were trustworthy MORE than by doing that and possibly giving up hundreds of dollars in order to do what's right! So not only are these guys incredibly friendly, warm, and considerate, they're also HONEST! And that seems to be in a real shortage these days.... Also, I ended up having permanent fillings applied to five teeth, and after they showed me the teeth in the mirror I was amazed that they looked PERFECTLY natural! You can tell Dr. Smith is skilled at cosmetic dentistry as well as taking care of tooth problems, because the color match and shape were spot on. I'm 100% confident now that, given many more months (mainly because I'm coming up with the money to get things done as I go along) I will have a perfectly natural, beautiful smile and totally healthy teeth, and maybe more importantly a dentist I intend to use for as long as I possibly can! P.S. The nurse mentioned in my previous review's name is Rita, and she's great! P.S.2. Jon and Daniel still rock, but I'm glad I don't have to bug them now =) Quick Update 3/6/09 - Four days later and still no pain from that molar, guess I really DIDN'T need a root canal!! read more

Charming and cozy are not often adjectives for a dentist's office. I absolutely love this bungalow and its staff. They go out of their way to make you laugh and make sure that you're comfortable - offering blankets to cocoon in while you have your teeth cleaned. I've only been here for bi-annual teeth cleanings, but I trust the other services they offer are up to the same standard. I first went to Dr. Smith about 14 years ago in an emergency situation. During the Christmas Holiday I broke a tooth and I called Dr. Smith's office because it was close to my home. I could not believe that during the Holidays a dentist would take on a new patient and squeeze them in for an emergency crown. When I arrived at the office I was pleasantly surprised at the homelike comfortable surroundings of the office. Everyone in the office was very kind and calmed my anxiety over getting my first crown. Dr. Smith is experienced, professional, personable and addresses all of a patient's concerns. His philosophy is to provide his patients with the most professional services in the most calming and comfortable environment possible. Before this experience I hated going to the dentist, like many people. Since this experience I look forward to my next appointment. Dr. Smith and his entire office staff are pleasant, courteous, professional and a lot of fun. They make sure your dental experience is as comfortable and painless as possible. The kudos in Dr. Smith's reviews are well deserved. I received one of the most comprehensive, thoughtful, and educational exams that I have ever had with a dentist. Dr. Smith conveys a genuine concern for his patients, and I never feel rushed, or that I'm asking a foolish question. Jon and Stephen are also wonderful. They are masters at keeping you (as the patient) organized, and they are meticulous at timing visits so that you never feel that your time is wasted. Additionally, not only are they are extremely informative and transparent, helping explain the billing and insurance processes, as well as dental, Invisalign, etc procedures, but they are truly two of the friendliest people that I have met since moving to Houston. I was personally shocked and moved when Jon proactively offered to investigate and escalate an insurance issue on my behalf. It is extremely rare to see that level of patient advocacy. Finally, Carino is a talented hygienist. She was great in making my cleaning quick and comfortable, yet thorough. I have seen Dr. Bruce W. Smith for a number of years, and he is wonderful! His skill, competence, and integrity are outstanding. Even beyond that, he is sensitive and caring with his patients. He always has plenty of time to hear my concerns and to explain options to me. He says a dentist hurt him when he was a child, so is especially careful to avoid any discomfort to the patient. His staff are helpful and attentive. He stays on schedule; the office is beautifully done and exceptionally comfortable; the office managers are helpful and I always understand the issues related to cost and insurance. Dr. Smith has done a great deal of cosmetic work for me, and it is beautiful. He did it quickly, painlessly, and at more than competitve costs. This dentist's office rocks! Everyone on the staff is totally awesome. Not only are they always kind and helpful, they remember me every time I call, even if it's out of the blue, and they always do what they can to help you work through exactly what you need done and how you can go about it and how they can address any concerns you might have. They're full of friendly advice and Dr. Smith is very knowledgeable as well as sympathetic. And Eric B. is right--it is the most gorgeous dental office you will ever see in your LIFE! The only downside there EVER was is that I didn't have insurance they could take (I was on a dental HMO, which I soon lost anyway). But they always understood that and if I ever needed multiple things done they would help me break them down by priority and then let me do them in separate appointments. I recently had to move away from Houston for work and I am so sad to leave this office I cannot even describe it!!!!! But I'll tell you what, when I said I was moving at my last appointment, they printed out all of my records and gave me full-color explanations of everything I could expect good (and bad) future dentists to say, and generally went way above and beyond the call of duty. I can't imagine going anywhere else now after getting to know Dr. Smith and all of his staff. As soon as I talked to him on the phone I knew he was the right person to take care of my daughters teeth. Her teeth were horrible and she was told she would have to have most all pulled. NOT SO! After Dr. Smith got through, her mouth was absolutely beautiful and none of her teeth had to be pulled. My daughter lives out of town so he accomodated her because of this. She only had to fly in 3 or 4 times for her whole mouth. I was amazed. And the staff treated her fantastic. Sooo, my daughter made me promise to see him, so my husband and I both go and we are so glad. I feel like all of them really care about me and they listen. I love the client service they give up front. Dr. Smith must appreciate good customer service and he must know how important it is because it gets people through the door to him. Of course Dr. Smith is an excellant Dentist who I would recommend to everyone. He explains everything he is going to do and makes sure you are doing okay throughout the procedure. Besides this he has up to date equipment. I am one of those people who does not like going and my blood pressure goes up, but I am very confident in him and trust him so my nerves are not nearly as bad as they would have been.
