I was recently in Pemberton for the weekend and decided to stop by Pemberton Distillery for a quick…read moretasting. Before going, make sure you check their hours on their website. At the end of October when I went, they're only open Friday and Saturday afternoons. Our experience there was super chill. We rang the door and someone let us in. I forgot his name, but he was one of the brothers behind the operation. He then introduced us to their liquors and we picked which ones we wanted to try. We tried a variety of liquors, including their vodka, ginger and honey, coffee, scotch, apple brandy, and kartoffelschnaps. Our favorite was the vodka, as it's one of the smoothest vodka's I've ever tried. The coffee liquor was also very good if you're a coffee drinker, but I personally am not a huge fan of the coffee taste. We bought a bottle of the vodka, scotch, and ginger and honey liquor away with us. Prices were reasonable. For example, a 750 ml bottle of vodka was $35. You can also take a couple steps into their distillery space. We went in to take a look and also was given a high level introduction to their distilling process.

Who knew that the best sipping vodka in the world hails from Pemberton BC!…read moreBut don't just take my word for it. They've got the international awards to prove it. 2010 Double Gold and Spirit of the Year in the recent World Spirit Awards. The distillery tour is well worth the $6 as you get a personal view of where all the potato magic happens. Tyler and Lorien are gracious hosts and are full of boozy knowledge. Oh, and of course there's a healthy sized tasting post-tour at the bar with your very own Schramm's glass. The word on the Pemberton street is that Tyler is concocting a small batch of Organic Single Malt Whisky this summer. But unfortunately, we will have to wait a few more years to sample this barrel of local gold. Damn you Oak Casks!

It's dark inside, a small patio rimmed with modern rusty-style planters and alcoholic Canadian tourists sipping micro cocktails. View of clumps of day tourists and a depressing ferry line. Yikes! What is there to like? The GIN! My theory is micro distilleries tend to differentiate themselves by making nasty weird stuff. I visit these distilleries because I'm curious and often walk out confused by their toxic nasty stuff. Who exactly is the customer? Rich alcoholics? Copper spirit is an exception because of their gin. I like gin neat and the copper spirit 'harmony' is my favorite in the whole wide world. Most similar I've had is from the edgefield in Portland. Great soft cloud of botanicals and a very long smooth finish. To me it seems like it's only made to drink straight - how could it be improved? On past visits their tonic has been sold out. This time I finally got to try their special gin and tonic - meh... lots of flavors that acted to hide the flavours of that terrific gin. Anyway, if you're a micro distillery skeptic their gin is maybe the exception to prove the rule.

All their alcoholic cocktails are $6 We got the elderflower sparkle which was very fresh tasting. The elderflower part was quite strong and floral flavored. It wasn't overly sweet and the vodka was very smooth. The cassis was also made with their vodka so it was also very smooth. The black currant flavour was quite strong and it wasn't too sweet. The consistency was thicker than regular cocktails. The not in Manhattan was very smokey. The lapsang souchong was very strong. The cherry rye sour had a strong cherry flavour. The aquafaba made the drink a bit thick. Overall our favorite were the cassis and the elderflower sparkle. We really enjoyed the presence vodka. The verity rye spirit was too strong for our liking. The service was very friendly and nice. I would recommend this place if you are visiting the island
