Working with Frank at Monte Vista paints the perfect picture of what everyone dreads picking a general contractor. If I could give 0 stars I would have. I signed a contract to have 700 sq ft of pavers and a 14 ft BBQ island built with a griddle, BBQ grill, and a refrigerator. The actual demo and removal for the backyard went OK. When it got to the actual skilled work, that's where his craftsmanship and professionalism went downhill. His professionalism is worse than the stars given. Their layout point for the whole backyard was off by 4 inch to start. 80% of the pavers will be installed under a patio cover I asked it to be flat or no more than 1 inch slope for water drainage. He augured with me that the standard is 2 inch. I agreed with the standard if rain or water would be hitting it but again it is fully covered. So they proceeded with their layout point at 4 inch above the grade of the previous concrete pad which you could see against the house. They used that starting height to layout the BBQ Island. I was consulted on the height of the BBQ, we agreed 36-37 inch H to the top of the counter-top. When they got done building the blocked frame and pouring the concrete counter top we measured it at 42 inch on one-side and 46 1/2 inch on the other side. So they had to break it out and start over. We then disagreed on the starting point of where I wanted the height of the pavers to start at again. Frank told me industry standard is a 2 inch slope again. He finally said ok to the elevation and that he would have it start with a 1 inch slope. They poured the new concrete top and it's still an 1 inch off. I said I'll live with it at this point. They started laying out all my pavers (12x24 Belgard Pavers) and they still had a ton of BBQ work to be done. They would cut pavers and cut the cutouts for the BBQ equipment and never sweep or cleaned off the pavers. On a Friday Frank had them rush to get the pavers all laid out so he could put the Polymeric sand down before they left for the day. He had them dump it in a pile and broom it out while he use a thumper with a paint cloth tied to it. When he was finished I asked him what is the next step? The pavers were pretty flat when they we're hand tapped but once the thumper got to them I had lips and joints that we're unacceptable. There were tripping hazards over 1/8 inch everywhere. I asked Frank if they will come tomorrow and fix all the tripping hazards. He told me nope this is how it will finish due to the size of the pavers. He said they're hard to get perfect. You could imagine I lost it on him for a second. After my rant he said make sure I don't get it wet because he put Polymeric sand down and water would ruin the pavers. As shown in the photos 1/4 of my patio is not covered and it was going to rain the next day. I asked him if I can't get them wet what about the part the rain will hit. His answers was " we don't want to ruin the rest" Again I'm pretty sure I lost my mind. That Monday we had a talk before his crew started to discuss professionalism and craftsmanship moving forward. He had his team pull up all the pavers that I circled with chalk. While this is all going down the BBQ is getting cut up for the accessories (Trash can, Refrid, and paper towel). They couldn't get them to fit and be level with each other or flush with the stucco. As part of the contract I asked him to paint the stucco with the same paint I had the house painted. He told me " his guys suck at painting and he wouldn't hire them to paint his own house". I said it's 14ft x 3 1/2 ft H I think they could manage it. He had them paint before they were finished with all the work on the BBQ island. Waste of time in my opinion. I also asked for a week for a small piece of metal flushing to be purchase and installed to protect a backsplash wall I had them build. He waited so long to get it, that when it rained for 3 days my new wall is now filled with water. After 4 1/2 weeks of this I finally terminated him. Please see pictures attached read more

We hired Monte Vista Landscape for a complete redo of our front & back yards including the driveway. We had pavers in the back & concrete in the front courtyard, sidewalk, driveway, & 2 row high brick outlining 2 grass areas & planter areas in front. Also, 3 ft high brick wall dividing front courtyard & planter area as well as between our patio & neighbors sidewalk. We wanted stamped concrete in all those areas, creating a smaller grass area & a couple of additional planter areas. We also wanted to install a vinyl picket fence where the brick wall was, then to continue down to the sidewalk. & to include irrigation, lighting, & sod. When Frank Tello came to bid the project, we felt very comfortable with him. Everything we asked for, he said yes, we can do that, no problem. We had a few other bids, but felt comfortable that we would get along with Frank. So we asked him to get us a contract. We had to go back & forth with him on text 5-6 times to finally get the contract correct, which should have been our first clue. He even included things on the contract that we didn't ask for, & didn't want, like a stucco mailbox pillar. We signed the contract with a start date of Oct 12 & completion Oct 30. The first day of the job, 2 of his 3 workers didn't show up, they didn't show up for 4 days. So only one (very hard working) guy & Frank, who is less than useless. After 3 days of the demo, Frank in his bobcat, broke our water main, & that was after DigAlert told him where it was, we told him 3 times, & even his guy told him, but Frank knew more than everyone else I guess. So, he had to do a quick fix for us for the weekend, before he did the permanent repair. Frank wanted to do a PVC repair with quick release connections. First, our main is copper, & quick release is not to be used underground. Finally, he got the copper line for the repair, but his guys had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Frank is standing there telling them what to do, which they had to do over several times. (More on this later) Meanwhile, Frank's bobcat had a hydraulic leak, spraying oil all over everything & leaking into the soil, so he had to bring in another one. The broken down bobcat sat in our yard for 3 weeks before we were insistent that he get it out of here. Then when he was loading it into the trailer, he broke our mailbox. His guys were now running drain & irrigation lines, Frank asked where we wanted to have our drip stubouts. As we were telling him, he was marking with his paint spray stick. Mainly, in the front, we wanted 3 stubouts along the front patio for our large pots, he marked those spots. Then they put in the framing & rebar for the concrete. Over that weekend, we went out & made note of several things that were not done right or we had questions about. On Monday, before any work got started, we had a conversation with Frank about our concerns, which included those 3 stubouts, which weren't there. He said, Oh, don't worry, it'll be done. No problem. We also had a question about the stubouts which were along the side by our neighbor, where the fence would put those on the neighbor's side of the fence rather than our side. Well, he corrected one, but not the others, & not the ones along the front. (More about the stubouts later) Now, he brought in his 'special concrete crew' to do the pouring & stamping of the concrete. He did the back yard first. On the weekend, some friends came by to see how it looked because they wanted to do their driveway. When we walked into the back yard, we saw several bottle caps & beer bottles thrown about. Our friends were not impressed, & we were not happy at all. When the concrete pour was finished, there was a release powder that covered it, so the colors & imprints were not able to be seen for days, until it was washed. We were NOT happy! First, there was to be a second color to look like stones, which wasn't done. Then, there were places where the stamps didn't imprint, places where the stamps moved & got a double outline, & places where they had globs of concrete. &, worst of all, those places were right in the main areas, first thing you see, also grading created water at house. We had to ask Frank several times about correcting these. He would just stand there, nod his head, & say nothing....also, DO nothing. He finally, only because we insisted, addressed these issues. His answer was "Well, you'd be opening a real can of worms if you try to do an overlay & restamp." Finally, we were fed up & went out ourselves, used a wire brush on the globs & mostly fixed them. As for the places where there was no imprint, we suggested that he could just use a router to make some lines. As for the double stamped lines, incorrect grading, & no second color, we just have to live with it. Frank also had to re-do some of the expansion joints. His answer to all our problems with the concrete was "that's just the nature of the beast". Of course it had nothing to do with the guys drinking on the job!!! read more

We wanted to start a new masonry project - creating fireplace area in our backyard. We were not entirely sure about what kind of design we wanted to have for the fireplace, but with this concrete/masonry company, they gave me a lot of great suggestions which helped us decide what to do. They came over to give me an estimate which was really fair, and then they came the next day and finished the job. I'm late with this review but I want to add a 5 star onto this yelp page. Last year, we got a dreadful sidewalk repair notification and I had to call multiple places to find one that'd fix it around my schedule and around my budget. I ended up with these guys and am more than happy that I did. We contacted all through email and they were very responsive. They gave me a reasonable quote within the price range that I was looking for, scheduled a time that would work for me, and the rest is history. They came and they did the concrete job perfectly. Let me start by saying that I hired this concrete company because of the great first impression I got from them over the phone. The person who talked to me was incredibly charismatic and personable, and the quote that was given was hard to beat. I thought it was a great deal for having professionals that were kind, courteous, and highly knowledgeable about anything there is to know about concrete and masonry. Frank did a really crappy job! He charged me an enormous amount of money for the project and it came out very badly. I called him to come back and fix the lousy job he did. He did come over to check it out and told me he would come back to fix the mess after his vacation. He never got back to me and he completely blew me off after calling him and texting him. My boyfriend had to re-do a third of what Frank did. I would not recommend him at all. Please don't use him. He's a liar, did shitty work, and way overcharged me. read more

These guys are the best. We had an old, cracked driveway with a mini-sink hole forming. Obviously this problem had to go. We called a couple of different contractors, but this concrete business had the best bid and schedule. The contractor seemed really knowledgeable and knew exactly what he was doing. Whole crew showed up on time and within one week, the previous old driveway was replaced with an even better, new concrete driveway with a brick border. Great attention to detail! He spent an hour or so going over our plans and provided us with great suggestions and expertise. The quote was cheaper than most others and we were on a strict budget so we decided to give him a chance. I called to have some giant bird of paradise plants removed from my yard. Sight unseen I was told they had a $2500 minimum and that these plants would probably be more. Then I was asked "Does your husband have a budget for this?" First of all, these people have no idea if I even have a husband. Second of all, they have no idea who is the primary earner in my household. I asked the girl if she had any idea how sexist that question was, and why would she ask such a question in this day and age? She had no answer. I realized at that point I had no interest in this company coming out to my house to do any work. I have since received 2 other quotes for $1200 and $1500 from respectful companies.
