Fantastic motel. Came into town for my 40th HS reunion, and wanted to stay somewhere fun. And the Montery Motel was just the perfect call. Not just because most of the social gatherings for the Academy reunion were just minutes away on that Friday & Saturday, but because my room was just the best. Clean, comfortable... great shower... unbeatable prince... and I even vegged out at the pool a few times. (I actually tried to get people to swing by the Monterey for a happy hour in their funky little bar, but there were just too many events to deal with in town.) When I was a kid, that stretch of Central was... tricky. So I'm just so glad that the Monterey and the El Vado are leading the charge of an awesome transformation. THANKS, MONTEREY MOTEL. This motel was a great find, close to Old Town and remodeled nicely! I was super surprised to see the Lounge area with a kitchen, living room, bathroom and free washer dryer unit. This was a great feature you can just hang out on the couch and watch TV while you do laundry and cook or hang out on the patio. The front office area is a bar and lounge as well and they give you a ticket for a free drink and the bartender was amazing and made some wonderful craft drinks with all local spirits! For Christmas me and the wife like to give destination gifts. So, I booked this cool little hotel because we like to stay at places that are not cookie cutter. The room was very nice and we felt very safe. Check in was very quick and easy. They give you a token for a free drink at the bar when you check in. Our second night we went to the bar and the bartender there made the best old fashioned I've ever had. Definitely get you one if you go. Love the decor! Love the neon lights at night. The bed was more comfortable than any chain hotel I have stayed in. Stopped in the Momo Lounge and enjoyed a local adult beverage and enjoyed the live music. This has been my favorite hotel while traveling Route 66. Cute retro motel close to downtown. Walking distance actually. Room was cozy and clean. Check in process was smooth. Only two complaints would be the limited parking. We returned to our room at 9pm and there was no parking at all. The other would be the partial door in our shower. It was a bit difficult to keep the water from getting everywhere. Overall this was a comfortable stay and I definitely recommend if looking for an affordable place to stay in Albuquerque. read more

Highly successful rehab of a classic Route 66 motel. Small room size addressed with ingenious design that covered all our needs. Friendly and helpful staff. Easy walking distance to Old Town and the Paseo del Bosque Trail. Only downside was outgassing of new materials used in the renovation and the windows don't open. A funky upscale motel just steps away from Albuquerque old town. The rooms are well appointed, and chilled to perfection when you step in out of the Albuquerque sun. It comes with everything you'd want in a modern upscale, funky motel. Large, walk-in shower, big flat screen, mini fridge, and a super comfy bed. There's a little pool, if you're so inclined, but don't look for a lobby area, they don't really have that, their check-in/checkout takes place in the Momo lounge, which is their on-site bar/lounge area near the front of the motel. The bar closes at 10 (depending on the crowd size), but there's somebody on staff there 24/7 to accommodate after hours check-in's. There are two distinct areas to the Monterery Motel, the first is the single story old school rooms that have all been upscaled to modern day standards, and the second is the two story building behind the pool area, obviously built later, but also very upscale in terms of amenities. Best of all, it's just a short walk (7 minutes if you meander) from the old town area of ABQ. Sure it's touristy, but there are some hidden gems in there too, (like Gobble This, the Salvadorian restaurant). There are also some wonderful little shops with authentic wares mixed in with all the touristy shops of crap. read more

Everything looked nice in the beginning, updated room, parking by the door. But then .... WiFi wasn't working. I called front desk, was put on hold without human interaction twice, that someone hang up on me. Called again, a lady picked up the call, told me she was in a different property. I went to the motel front, nice bartender told me that maintenance is gone, she can't do anything and her boss wasn't responding. WiFi never came up until morning. Not even an apology. Gets worse. Shower has a plastic floor and is slippery, I did not realise until used soap and fell on a sharp corner of a tile. Front desk told me there was supposed to be a shower mat. I agree but there wasn't. I asked a manager to contact me. Did not get a call. This is a NO GO place. read more

I've been staying here for a decade. The older owners were warm and sweet but like many things an update was overdue. Boom- prices have doubled to 140 for these simple pull your truck up to the door rooms. Thats understandable for all the modern changes but anymore and it'll top me out of staying here. I love the additional Momo Lounge with great drinks after a day of driving complete with loud DJ neon lit bar; it would make a great gathering for sure & I simply sat at the bar but there's outside seating. I couldn't hear the music from our room so that was good when I needed to get to sleep for another long drive across the Southwest. Rooms are clean, modern, & naturally homie for a relaxing vibe. Definitely a great classic stop for a halfway point between SoCal to Dallas. read more

Hey, if you're up for a little travel adventure in your life, the Monterey Motel fits the bill. An older property off of old Route 66, the Monterey has definitely seen better days but is an affordable option while visiting Albuquerque with some interesting options around. While the parking lot and exterior is seriously weathered, inside the rooms are clean and well kept with a 70s feel to the decor. Small fridge, toiletries, small coffee maker and TV, the usual amenities are there but a bit dated. There's also a small pool which was not open during my visit. You have to check in at the El Vado Motel next door which has a host of renovated eateries and tap room. The aquarium and botanic garden are down the street if you want to do some touring. So what can I say but the Monterey worked for me but it won't for everyone. If you don't enjoy a quirky, older motel, you'll probably be turned off by the Monterey but for others, it will be a nostalgic visit! read more

Would give it 0 stars if I could. They double charged for my room and then put me through the absolute ringer trying to get my money back. They claimed they refunded me multiple times but the money never returned. Every time I called they told me to call back at a different time. It's now been almost two months and I still haven't gotten my money back. read more

Clean & affordable with a touch of "European hospitality" (as advertised). Nothing fancy but great location- we were able to walk to Old Town and a decent pizza place. Wifi was free. The neon sign for this place was really cool. Non-smokers hotel for 2 non-smokers. We paid $58. Can't beat that. read more

I was excited to see a NON-Smoking motel on Route 66 and my eyes needed a rest from smokey motels. I assumes it would be higher prices but would be with the cost. I rang the bell and the person asked if I had a reservation. I said no. I asked if rooms were available and he said yes. So, I said I want a room then. He said I have to reserve online. I slowly said, okay, I'll try to do it on my phone over here. Thinking he would take my CC and reserve a room for me. NO. So I tried 3 times on times on my slow mobile internet connection but it wouldn't process. I asked of I was doing something wrong. He then said, well, it may be to late to reserve, I think the cut off is 8 pm. So I asked if he could bypass and still a no. Next, he said, oh, it stops at 6pm. Very unknowledgeable person working and he just clicked on his computer the whole time. Now it could be the best hotel inside and I will never know. Maybe I'll try on my way back but I'm already turned off. The NONSmoking would be only reason to come back. Basically. You have to make a reservation ONLINE. Good luck read more

Also, gotta love a place called the Monterey Non-Smokers' Motel. Although the motel was great and the staff was awesome, especially Andre, what happened to me after checkout was shocking and unacceptable. After spending a night at this cool retro motel, I checked out and flew home. Much to my chagrin I noticed a $100 charge to my credit card. When I called to inquire, the manager(Ole) told me the charge was for missing artwork from the room. OUTRAGEOUS accusation. Totally baseless claim, No proof and quite honestly, who would steal artwork from a motel room. Hell, I didn't even take a bar of soap. Ole, in a brazen and arrogant tone, told me to dispute the charge with my credit card company (duh!). Great place but Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware ). We stopped here on a road trip looking for an affordable place to lay our weary heads and were welcomed by the sweet couple who runs it. Full name is the Monterey Non-Smokers Motel. We stayed here in May 2007 and had a really pleasant time. The price was right (I believe we paid $80 a night) and in a convenient, though not the most scenic location. It was a few blocks walk to Old Town (we're from Chicago so we walk anywhere) down a busy street (Central/Route 66) and really close to the zoo and botanical gardens. Next time to get a different taste of the city I'll stay closer to downtown, but for a first time guest we weren't disappointed. The motel's bare bones looked like a normal motel but the Polish couple (originally from Chicago! When I checked in they were really excited that I was Polish-- they could tell by my last name-- and from Chicago) really put a lot of care into it. There's beautiful rose bushes outside every door and very clean. The rooms themselves aren't anything special but we're pretty easy to please. read more

Some reviews call it dated but I think it has charm. When was the last time you actually used a key to enter your room (not a plastic card)? It's about a fifteen minute ride from the airport. The rooms were very clean and the proprietors are friendly. Its walking distance to restaurants, shopping. I would stay here again. This was the worst place we have ever stayed. No one at a front desk, not answering repeated phone calls. bathroom sink and shower not cleaned nor beds remade after our use. When we returned in the afternoon, it looked like the only things that had been done were emptying a wastebasket and taking out used towels. The beds were not tidied. There was no courtesy shampoo and no way to get into the room designated for filling an ice bucket or using the vending machine. The establishment has opened a new complex a block away and that's where we had to register, only we were not informed of that earlier. So we arrived at the Monterey only to be told we couldn't check into our room until we went to El Vado a block away. read more

We stayed only one night in this motel but we were quite pleased with the overall experience. The name itself sas all about the cleanliness of the room, being a non-smoker couple for us it's very important to stay in a room where nobody ever smoked. The room is quite big as well so it could be a good choice for both short and long stays. The motel is very old style and you get to park right in front of your door room, although being it quite small and on a busy road it might get noisy at times. It's walking distance from Old Town and pretty cheap and the owner a very pleasant person too. Definitely reccomended. read more

Inexpensive & clean. Just a short drive off the freeway. Nothing fancy, but certainly adequate for a rest from the road and a shower. Small refrigerator and cable TV. Easy access to microwave. Too cold in November to think about using the pool, but it looked well maintained. This is our 4th time staying here and haven't been disappointed. read more
