They were extremely rude, especially the manager who was behind the tellers. I have a client in her 80s who needed cash to buy food, so I instructed her to write me a check for $100. I would go to her bank and cash it for her. She lives in Marina, and I live in Monterey. They charge me $10 to cash their client's check. The staff were profoundly rude, didn't explain anything, and never said thank you--nothing. She will be changing banks. I've never encountered that level of poor service from a bank before. every time I go in the Salinas branch the employees are very kind and proffesional. Its just the store hours I hate. I cannot deposit money into this bank in salinas because their ATM insofar as depositing cash never works. I don't know if the ones in Monterey work but it sucks becasue I have to drive to Monterey to deposit money through the ATM. Chase is open on Saturdays how come you guy can't do that. read more

I'm glad I didn't listen to the overall number of stars here, and tried out MCU. I went to cash my coins at the teller, and ended up moving my auto loan with the $200 incentive and the promise to match and go a little lower than my current auto rate. Switching delays the monthly payment a few months, which was helpful at the time. The Wealth Builder Rewards checking account is pretty amazing because the current cash back rate is about 8% which is more than any CD or high interest savings account, so it's a nice way to earn money on your money if you have some funds sitting around, and hopefully it's helping other people locally get loans. The program also seems to incentivize spending locally because you have to have 25 point of sale transactions each month, which is a great way to support the local economy versus the big online corporations. Plus, all staff have been really friendly, it feels like a real diverse community bank that wants to help its members thrive over just profiting. The only annoying thing is that they'll lock my account when I add external accounts, and sometimes making payments through other institutions doesn't work. But on the plus side there are no international fees on debit card transactions when traveling! read more

The staff is always friendly, always polite and helpful when you go into the branch. Their phone service.. are just amazing ... you never put in hold to wait for someone to pickup your call. We started at there branch on Garden Road.. must be over 40 years... the Salinas office also provide the same Serivice .. The Manage of Monterey was in the lobby. My daughter recently applied for an auto loan through Monterey Credit Union, and we initially worked with Zach. He approved the loan and provided us with the interest rate (7.09%), the loan term (72 months), and the maximum approved loan amount. Based on his confirmation, we proceeded to the dealership, selected a car within the approved amount, and finalized the sales contract. When we sent the completed contract back to Zach, he suddenly claimed he had made a mistake and could now only approve a lower loan amount than the one he initially committed to. This left us in an extremely difficult and stressful situation after we had already signed paperwork with the dealership, relying on his numbers. This kind of error shows a serious lack of professionalism, attention to detail, and accountability. When someone in a lending position approves a loan, customers make major financial decisions based on that approval. Having the terms changed after the fact is unacceptable and reflects poorly on Monterey Credit Union's internal review process and training. We expected better integrity and reliability from a local credit union. I strongly urge others to double-check everything in writing before making any commitments based on what this branch or representative says. read more

I've always raved and praised Monterey credit Union, this is the second vehicle I have purchased financing through Monterey credit Union. I have always recommended friends and family and I've even gotten referral payment from Monterey credit Union by getting loved ones to sign up. I've recently fallen into hard times recently and I didn't pay my car loan for 3 months and I understand it's fair they can repossess it. which is what happened to me. The very next day of the repossession which was Monday December 22nd 2025. They repossessed the vehicle and I don't blame them for that. But what they did next was very unfair, Monterey credit Union okayed to send the car to auction after I paid the outstanding balance the very next day on the 23rd Tuesday. When I try to reach out to Monterey credit Union they tell me they will call me back and figure out how can get my vehicle back. The representative named Rose who was helping me promised to call me back on Tuesday I never heard anything back from her. Now they are telling me it is between me and the auction house when I am still financing the vehicle from Monterey credit Union while balance is fully paid. The auction house Manheim they work with manipulate you they trick you for example today, Anaheim was open I called at 11:30 and told him I need to pick my vehicle up they told me to call back 2 hours later and I called back 2 hours later they were closed, they do this because they want to keep charging you every single day they keep your vehicle. The credit union hires them to store your vehicle and then the credit union says it's out of their hand when they work alongside them which is the messed up part. Monterey credit Union doesn't care that you've been loyal to them they don't care that you are having a hard time and they definitely don't care if you catch up the very next day and pay your balance in full. I believe they work alongside these tow truck companies and auction houses to pray upon you when you were vulnerable. another stipulation they have is no same day appointments. I made it right with Monterey credit Union the very next day and Rose told me we have a bunch of cars on the same list and they haven't been picked up for months it's so strange to me that yours was picked up after one day and sent to auction. It seems really fishy to me I feel like I'm being extorted which is totally whats happening Monterey credit Union says it's between me and the auction house. Today is Friday and wanting credit union is still not helping me nor do they return my phone calls when they say they will. Monterey credit Union is telling me to come in Monday. It is well known that these auction houses and tow yards will do whatever they can to hold your vehicle hostage so you can pay extravagant fees towards them storing your vehicle. These practices should change. I totally understand that it was my fault at first for not making my payments on time and being behind but I paid the very next day all my outstanding balance outstanding balance plus the fees for the repossession towards the credit union and for them to just let you suffer. It was Monterey credit Union that okayed the tow trucks company to send my vehicle to auction the very next day it was repossessed. They wanted to make it very difficult for me so I can give up paying for my car that way they can charge me the difference when they auction it and I'm completely paid up and now I believe they're trying to keep me from being able to pick up the vehicle so I can default again because the auction house is going to charge me an extravagant amount for over a week of storage it's a scam Don't fall for their trap. Outrageous and I've always praise this credit union. Be very very careful if you do miss payments because this credit union will wreck you financially and not help you even though you pay them the very next day. I thought the credit union was for the community I always told everyone to bank at credit Unions because they help our community but when you're down and you make it right they kick you. Oh and here's the kicker too One day of repossession they sent it to Hayward and San Francisco supposedly my car is there somewhere one single day of repossession and I paid them back in full the very next day. That is a disgusting practice they really don't want me to get my car back apparently and I've already paid all the fees. It's very weird that they would okay my vehicle to be shipped to San Francisco or Hayward the very next day I paid off my balance in full that sounds like extortion to me because they refuse to give me the same day appointment to pick up my vehicle and I know they are going to try to charge me extravagant storage fees and they lie to you tell you to call back at times when they are closed and that is the auction house Monterey credit union hires called Manheim. I also have personal property in that vehicle I have never even received an itemized list of the personal property. read more

Everything needs improvement. To associates calling at 4:45pm when the bank closes at 5pm. To having your car repossessed when you have receipts posted on your loan account for every single month. No calls back in a timely manner. Horrendous customer service. Continuously say I have not made payments when the payment is posted on their payment portal! Make it make sense. They should be completely shut down for horrible business practices. Worse than Bank of America and that speaks volumes. 0 stars, would never recommend.
