    Gift + Mother's Day roses & H2O

5/06/16--I'd been contemplating a gift for a distinguished Hampton University graduate for months. Out of the blue, one of my friends (who appreciates the finer things in life) suggested a Mont Blanc writing instrument. Yes, a writing instrument not a mere pen. After I finished pondering why I hadn't thought of this, I made time to stop in and browse their collections. Sophistication was seeping out the seams of this boutique. I relished the luxury timepieces before making it back to the sales associates standing near the pens. A knowledgeable male associate started engaging me, guided me through Mont Blanc's interesting history then led me to the writing desk where I tried ballpoint and fineliner pens from the contemporary StarWalker collection. The associate provided additional info that helped me make a decision. It was a very comfortable transaction--no undue pressure. I sipped on sparkling water while my guy gift wrapped the midnight black ballpoint pen. I left with a smile, beautiful writing instrument, water for the road, and 2 roses for Mother's Day.

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Picked up a great pen after much patience and assistance from several of the sales staff who were tireless in making sure I made the right choice. Interestingly, the one I ultimately picked turned out not to be the one for me and when I called a few days later about my choice, I was told that it was not a problem and to bring it right back for an exchange. Woohoo, no problem at all! They just wanted me to be confident in my choice and that second chance was what it took. Well done going the distance to ensure customer satisfaction. Also of note, their sales manager is very well versed and a veteran of the watch world. He is a great resource if you want to have a substantive conversation about watches beyond what Mont Blanc provides to their sales staff in training. A must visit if you've got Mont Blanc on the brain.

We always end up paying a visit to this Montblanc location whenever we visit Tysons II, regardless of whether we're looking to purchase or just browsing through the latest arrival in their limited edition collection. Our patronage of this location is due largely in part to the friendly services of their sales staff, and Peter in particular. What a delightful, charming young man! Always energetic, always friendly, and always accommodating of our extensive questions and curiosities, I've never left this store without feeling a little bit more educated on the world of high-end writing instruments. The staff will always be happy to show you as many pens as you want, and go out of their way to answer any questions you may have. They'll happily discuss their personal collections and favorites, and aren't shy about bringing out whatever they have in their back room to assuage your curiosity. Even if you're just contemplating upgrading your writing collection, don't be afraid to drop by!

The closest comparison I have is Chico's, though this place is independent and the style is artsier. The pieces here are flattering and designed to be both fun but functional/practical, which I appreciate. I see a lot of pieces I think my mom would adore. That said I have, at 33, found that there is one brand there in particular - Ciara Sun Woo - that is ideal for young professionals and I have bought two of this designer's dresses on sale. They use high tech fabrics that are curve flattering and the perfect balance between clingy and drapey, and also they are super work appropriate but can often go day to night and come in nuanced solid colors. The prices on accessories are very reasonable and the clothing, while a little pricey, comes from smaller lesser known brands and they also have good sales. The staff is very friendly and helpful and it's never crowded so you can shop at a leisurely pace. The only flaw is is the location in the Metro mall and I worry about how well any of the businesses are doing in there. I never go into that mall anymore and sometimes forget this shop is there but when I do remember I think, "oh yeah! That place is great I should stop in." So if you're in Rosslyn check it out and support one of the few remaining small businesses in an increasingly corporate, sterile neighborhood.

They also offer a great selection of unique gifts and other special items that you can't find at the countless big box stores that have taken over almost everywhere else here now. It's like visiting...Etsy...in person. If such a store existed of course. Obviously only a very very small, and very highly curated BIT of Etsy, but still...it's etsy-esque. In a good way. Well worth a visit. Especially for those "extra hard to shop for" and "already have everything" types. They're also great for the many miscellaneous gift needs that pop up throughout the year for coworkers and teachers and other people you might not know very well and whose gift options fall uncomfortably in between even the classiest target dollar bin options your best friends might love, and the fancier more expensive fare reserved for one's own children, close relatives, spouses... The "I don't really know what, but ideally something special and memorable and cool" gifts for all sorts of things like secret Santas, teacher appreciation, miscellaneous baby/bridal showers, office party exchanges, attempts to gain favor or acceptance from cringey or critical or perfectly lovely mother in laws...etc. This place is perfect for all of those and more. I've found awesome Christmas presents for my mother here two years in a row now, and many fun things for myself as well. Best boutique baby clothes section I've seen in the Arlington area, actually. Oh! And Scout bags galore!

We visited around the same time as the Westover Farmers Market, so the inside was a bit packed. At one point, we noticed the line going nearly outside the door--although it is a small location, so at least it moved relatively quickly. My order came fairly quick for the amount of people. However, my friend's order had a longer wait time despite being the same drink with only the milk substituted. We eventually asked the staff if the order was still coming through--they were very sweet, apologized for the wait, and quickly prepared the order. Unsure if maybe the order got lost in the shuffle, or perhaps someone else accidentally grabbed it, but it was nice that they quickly resolved the issue once it became known to them. The drink was okay, which I was fine with because the main appeal was supposed to be the Halloween-themed design. I realized too late that my drink didn't come with the chocolate syrup drizzled on top that others' did, which was unfortunate. The cafe was beautifully decorated, and it's clear that there was a lot of thought and heart put into the design. The shop was also nice to check out, with a great collection of items with a nice mission and message behind each product. However, it is a bit tight to go through the aisles when it is busy. I hope to visit again during a less crowded time to check out other seasonal treats they may have in the future!

When they moved to McLean earlier this year, I went with about 20 items to put up for consignment. (I had made appointment as they require.) I brought in beautiful clothes, in excellent condition. They took the boxes to the back to inspect the clothing and choose which they wanted to take for consignment; and while that was going on I browsed. I couldn't believe the downgrade in the clothing; while the quality was fine, I did not see anything stylish for sale. I was not even tempted to try anything on. After about 20 minutes the owner comes back and says she cannot take any of my items, although she would consider one in the fall (it was a spring/summer item, as were all the pieces, as this took place in mid-Spring) and I "could come back in a few months." Super dismissive and arrogant. The one good thing was the friendly young man at the counter, who I chatted with while I waited. I see the positive reviews here are years old, so here's an update: NTY management is just as or even more snobby now, the prices are even higher -- not just because of time passing but also likely the expensive location -- and they don't even have cool clothes any more.

The staff were visible and ready to help but not pushy. The inventory was well curated and full but not overly stuffed. I saw a number of nice sweaters and dresses that I liked, and I ended up buying one. Also a lot of fun gifts, jewelry, and assorted decor items. This store is geared toward an older crowd, which I really like. I'm past the age of shopping at some other resale boutiques that focus on only the trendiest items in juniors sizing. New To You is more JCrew and higher-end items. Prices seemed to be about 50 percent off original retail. Could you find some of these items thrifting? Sure, but it'd be like pulling a needle from a haystack. I'm willing to pay more for a tailored selection of good-condition items. I'll come back to shop here.
