Missouri has 4 spectacular State Parks that are world renowned for their trout fishing. Montauk is one of those parks (Bennett Spring, Meramec, and Roaring River) are the others. The park is not far outside St. Louis and is quite a drive from KC, but it's worth checking out. The name of the game here is trout fishing, and no matter how you like to catch them, the on site fish hatchery stocks the water for you every night. If you don't catch something here it's very rare.
The park rangers are friendly, the fees are reasonable, and access to the water is easy and convenient. But while you're at the park take time to go explore the old mill site. While it's not a working mill many of the key parts are still there. It's a guaranteed conversation starter for the kids.
This is also the headwaters of the world renowned Current River, one of the most wonderful streams in North America to canoe and kayak on. While you can't canoe in the park, you can just outside of it, but that's another review for another time. (OMG, if you can ever float the Current, DO SO!!)
The campground can get pretty busy. It's wise to plan ahead and lock in reservations. But it's a very nice campground and one that I seriously miss out here in Vegas. When I get to come back to Missouri during the summer, this place never disappoints us. It's about as close to guaranteed fun as we've found yet!)
5 Stars: It's one of Missouri's crown jewels and it's just a beautiful place! read more
