Any book I have wanted to read, if they didn't carry it, there was no problem getting a copy from a sister library very quickly. An email is sent letting me know it is in for pick-up. Through the years, I have used the computers to print out documents when my printer wasn't working and the staff was always helpful. I recently was in looking for some local historic photos and was brought an abundance of material from the local history room. Our town may be small but, a visit to our library will show you the residents have big hearts and smiles to greet you.

The help/reference desk and tech. support in the front of the library is always very helpful and…read morefriendly. However, the environment (AKA ghetto characters) of the library is getting to the point where the people at the front desk can't say "please be quiet" enough to some of the people in here. Don't leave any valuables alone, even if it's just for a few minutes to go to the bathroom. There have been instances of people's cell phones and laptops being stolen from here. There used to be signs, warning people to have eyes on their belongings at all times, but I believe they have been taken down now. There are some shady people walking around, and you will know exactly who they are, because you will hear them before you see them. Most people who come to this library are here to study, read, or do schoolwork, but others come in here to socialize and speak very loudly, so it tends to distract those who have come here to use the library for what its intended uses are.

I'm not sure if the staff are volunteers or employees, but they consistently come across as having a chip on their shoulder. Today, I visited with my kids (ages 5-8), one of whom is on the autism spectrum. His stimming and occasional grunting are normal behaviors for him, but the staff showed no empathy or understanding. Instead, one employee repeatedly checked on us, constantly reminding us to lower our voices and enforcing rules without considering the circumstances. The overall atmosphere felt unwelcoming and overly rigid, especially for a place that should encourage children to learn, explore, and feel comfortable. While I understand the need for order, there's a balance between maintaining rules and being flexible enough to allow kids to be kids. I truly hope the library staff can undergo some training in inclusivity and customer service so it can become a space that feels welcoming to all members of the community.

It is slightly more than an hour's drive from New York City--when there is no traffic. Although most visitors don't make it to the area surrounding the mall, you should know that Woodbury is literally surrounded by State Parks, most notably Harriman State Park, West Point and the Storm King Arts Center. There are also numerous lakes and streams, and creeks. In the first half of the Twentieth Century, the area was a summer destination for the New York City elite, and eventually was dotted with bungalow colonies--some of which are still in use. Run by volunteers who are either retired or are simply looking for a way to keep themselves entertained, they're not there to provide stellar customer service. They're there because someone needs to be there. They're not getting paid, they don't kiss ass, and they'll take their time because let's face it, I just end up ogling the books other people are bringing in anyway. Saturdays are particularly entertaining because they get a flood of new books, and since they're being sold for a song, that's my favorite time to go. Not to mention how funny the volunteers get when they're overwhelmed with trunkfuls of books dropped off by impatient adult children cleaning out their elderly parents' homes. Then the newer parents with preteen kids often dramatically acquiesce to their kids begging for a 25 cent book, but ONLY, if they unload the dishwasher, finish laundry and clean their room. Smart. The next Pixar movie, with bargain basement book prices to boot. Bring the popcorn, I've got an extra folding chair with your name on it.

It's built of stones in a style that was commonly used in this part of Orange County, NY. It now is used as the office for the Town Historian. What a great little historic spot tucked along the Hudson River. We were trying to kill time before…read morean afternoon wedding and I came across this place while searching online. This historic site was home to pivotal decisions during the Revolutionary War, made by George Washington himself. The museum/buildings themselves have limited hours (which are listed on the parks website) but we were able to walk the grounds freely which was nice. There are gates/fencing surrounding the site, which were locked as we went around - but toward the opposite side of the site (where I believe their designated parking lot is? We weren't sure but it looked like their lot) there is an opening where you can walk a gravel path that will take you through the site. It was really cool being able to see the buildings here. Even though the park is nestled in a neighborhood/town, I felt pretty immersed in the history just walking along the paths. We got to see the buildings that George Washington was present in, plus the various monuments that were erected on site. The state parks put up informational signs around the area so we could easily read up on the history. It was a really nice way to get even just a taste of history while we were here, which was perfect for our constricted time frame. If I'm ever traveling this way again, I'd definitely try to make it for a tour of the interiors.
