What a great little historic spot tucked along the Hudson River. We were trying to kill time before an afternoon wedding and I came across this place while searching online. This historic site was home to pivotal decisions during the Revolutionary War, made by George Washington himself. The museum/buildings themselves have limited hours (which are listed on the parks website) but we were able to walk the grounds freely which was nice. There are gates/fencing surrounding the site, which were locked as we went around - but toward the opposite side of the site (where I believe their designated parking lot is? We weren't sure but it looked like their lot) there is an opening where you can walk a gravel path that will take you through the site. It was really cool being able to see the buildings here. Even though the park is nestled in a neighborhood/town, I felt pretty immersed in the history just walking along the paths. We got to see the buildings that George Washington was present in, plus the various monuments that were erected on site. The state parks put up informational signs around the area so we could easily read up on the history. It was a really nice way to get even just a taste of history while we were here, which was perfect for our constricted time frame. If I'm ever traveling this way again, I'd definitely try to make it for a tour of the interiors. read more

This park is extremely well kept and nice. They just made some new walkways around the perimeter to make walking around a little easier. There are great views of the river and a solid amount of benches. Dogs are welcome on their leash! read more

Being a history geek, I just can't start to explain how excited I was to find this site (I accidently left my passport in Tacoma) the "trail" to this spot is well marked on the road, and the park itself over looks the Hudson river. I got there right before 5 (that's when the park closes btw) ANF the staff offered to allow me to roam the bottom floor of the museum free of charge since I only had 10 mins to see things. It was a very informative spot and on the way to the car, I took the detour around the grounds ( it's not huge, so this wasn't hard). Also don't forget to get your passport stamp from the museum staff :) it's a great spot for families, and children or those that are into history. read more

I visited General Washington's Headquarters on a Sunday afternoon when the museum was closed. There is no fee to enter and enjoy the grounds. On Sundays, the grounds are open from 1-5PM. The first remarkable thing I found on the way to the designated gated parking lot on the south side near the back of the park was some of the original cobble stone street showing through the blacktop. This made for a bumpy ride into the parking lot where you then park upon red bricked areas. The complex consists of these components: -statue of the Minuteman -headquarters -headstone of Uzal Knapp -sundial and a non-working well -museum (closed on Sundays) -monument with a statue of Washington which was gated and closed -large green space between the headquarters and the back of the lot with views of the Hudson River -park benches I found the park to be a peaceful place to visit away from the city. read more

Watch out for the address of this place: Google or Apple Maps will take you to the wrong place if you type in 84 Liberty St. I think Google takes you to "Liberty Street WH," an address is in the southern end of the city. The $4 tour of the Hasbrouck House is just ok. It takes about 20 minutes and the woman in period dress is very knowledgeable of the history of the place. There isn't that much to see inside though, and the things that are in there are just staged for the talk. Go for the information, not the house itself. I thought the museum was good. Packed with artifacts from the war. If you're interested in weaponry from the 1700s you'll like the second floor. The best part of the grounds are the grounds themselves; the view of the Hudson is great from here. No wonder why Washington chose this house. read more

This place is insanely small so if you are going out of your way to come here I'd say don't bother if you are going to drive more than 20 mins. My visit to this place lasted at best 2 hours and that was me stretching the time. I took a bunch of photos and called it a day. They have a small parking lot around the back but you can also park on the street and enter from the front. If your a historic buff you'd probably love this place but when I took my kids they were bored in half-hour. read more

My friends and I were on our way apple picking and had about half an hour to kill, so I suggested we stop by George Washington's Headquarters, which was on the way. We took about 15 minutes to walk around the grounds, which is incredibly beautiful. There's a monument overlooking the Hudson, which offered an incredible view (and really, a moment to reflect on what happened on those grounds). Stop by, even if you only just have a few minutes. It's an incredible piece of history and the view alone is also worth it. read more

$4 per person for a tour? Heck yeah! Tour guide was so cute, authentic New York, and very informative. She kept the kids in our group involved and intrigued by still gave us loads of very cool information to absorb. Grounds were beautiful and a lovely picnic spot. This National Historic Site is located on the Hudson River. General Washington resided here during the last eighteen months of the Revolutionary War, after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown and prior to the signing of the Treaty of Paris which ended the war. The residence is the Hasbrouck House, a Dutch style home built of fieldstone; but, with several rooms, it is much larger than the homes on Huguenot Street in New Paltz (see our review). The oldest part of the house was constructed in 1725; the house was remodeled and additional rooms were added at later dates. The household furnishings are typical of the period when Washington resided there. The grounds include a small museum where you can see war-related memorabilia, view a video and purchase a tour of the house. Our tour guide was knowledgeable. Also on the grounds are two monuments: a Tower of Victory (in need of renovation) and a statue of a Minuteman. If you're interested in history and especially the Revolutionary War, this is a must-see. But beware! To the shame of Newburgh, the roads around the Headquarters are in deplorable condition, almost requiring a car with good ground clearance to negotiate the huge potholes. Got to check this out yesterday, unexpected find, and a real treat to see. Wasnt there at right time for the tour but got to roam around outside. The headquarters is a beautiful building, the historic monuments are just as interesting. Beautiful view of the Hudson as well. So much history in this part of the state. read more

Can't believe such a piece of history remains in such a run down town. This was definitely a highlight of Newburgh. Located only a few blocks away from what could only be described as a crack district, this place was still perfectly preserved. General Washington lived here for 16 months, and was apparently the place where he drafted the letter that later became the framework for the constitution. Also the birthplace of the Purple Heart... who knew. And NO ONE goes here. That was sort of mind blowing to me. The staff do a great job of keeping the place in good shape and telling the story to the few visitors that pass thru. One of the few things worth doing in this town. read more

Great stop for anyone into American History. This is where George Washington lived during the end of the American Revolution. The museum is great but to make a stop worthwhile definitely book a tour ahead of time so you can see the house, which is only included with a tour purchase. It's something like $3 each fyi. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and, depending on the time, it felt to us like a private tour given the number of people with us. Perfect for an hour historical stop. read more

The tour of Washington's HQs take a half hour and is interesting. The Victory Monument is also impressive as are the beautiful grounds. The museum/administration building has some very interesting artifacts, including a purported lock of Washington's hair. It could have been his cat, who knows? The only annoyance was with the museum pieces being identified only by a number, and you have to take that number to a computer to read about each item. There were only two working computers (one was down) and assuming there are three or four visitors in the museum, you'll be waiting. The price of admission is nice too, at $4 for adults and $3 for students. Kids under 12 enter for free. The area is run down but you can see the semblance of an emerging artists' community. It's worth the trip. read more
