    Walkway to Beacon-beautiful river views

This review is for the pedestrian walkway on the bridge (I don't think that has a separate listing.) The drive over the bridge is a typical scenic Hudson River crossing but doing it on foot is even better. On the Newburgh side there is a small lot on Grand Ave where you can easily see the paved pathway leading to the bridge. The walkway accommodates bikes and pedestrians and on a weekday morning there were plenty of folks out, getting their workout in. It's a bit noisy (I mean you're on a bridge...) but headphones take care of that and once you take in the sweeping views, you'll forget all about that. I want to say it's about 3 miles round trip so totally doable in an hour or so. I extended my walk by continuing on the bike path leading in to Beacon. Actually the Beacon side is more scenic with the hills all decked out in their fall foliage and the park like setting once you exit the bridge. You also get a view of the Metro North train running along the river. Great way to kick off a morning with some fresh air and river views. Open dawn to dusk, free for pedestrians and bikers and seemed pretty safe with lots of other exercisers out and about.

What a beautiful view!!! Bridge is rather bumpy though...one lane was closed, and it wasn't even the one they had a sign up for.

Can get crowded during suburban faux "rush hour" but efficient overall. At $1.50, one of the greatest bargains available today.

This historic site was home to pivotal decisions during the Revolutionary War, made by George Washington himself. The museum/buildings themselves have limited hours (which are listed on the parks website) but we were able to walk the grounds freely which was nice. There are gates/fencing surrounding the site, which were locked as we went around - but toward the opposite side of the site (where I believe their designated parking lot is? We weren't sure but it looked like their lot) there is an opening where you can walk a gravel path that will take you through the site. It was really cool being able to see the buildings here. Even though the park is nestled in a neighborhood/town, I felt pretty immersed in the history just walking along the paths. We got to see the buildings that George Washington was present in, plus the various monuments that were erected on site. The state parks put up informational signs around the area so we could easily read up on the history. It was a really nice way to get even just a taste of history while we were here, which was perfect for our constricted time frame. If I'm ever traveling this way again, I'd definitely try to make it for a tour of the interiors.

While the tour is timed at 2.5 hours...you spend closer to 1.5 hours on the island itself, factoring in the 30-minute boatride to and from the island. There was lots of parking available as the Metro Station's parking is free on weekends. I opted for the early 9:30am departure. I arrived around 9:05am and there were a few people there waiting. They started checking tickets and allowing people onto the boat at around 9:15am. The boat left on time at 9:30am. Tom was at the wheel and Jen was assisting. (Forgive me if I got the names wrong) Jen gave an overview of the sites, buildings and history of the Newburgh waterfront during the 20-minute boatride to the island. We arrived around 9:50, docked and climbed up some stairs to a waiting/dock area. We were then greeted by ___ who was our tour guide for the visit. She explained the history of the island as we made our way through the tour path...passing the castle, garden and museum. After the tour (about 30-40 minutes), visitors can explore the island on their own. There are a few areas that are accessible but not on the tour path, such as Wee Bay. I suggest exploring those areas as you will be rewarded with some amazing views! The museum is also small, but very informative...lots of little interesting facts about the island in there. Be sure to check it out. While the tour path itself is fairly flat, the other explorable areas are rocky and uneven. Its best to wear comfortable hiking/trail shoes if possible...otherwise, you will feel every sharp/uneven rock particalarly if wearing flat-bottomed shoes. There is a small shop there with snacks and some souvenirs. Bathrooms on the island. None on the boat. The group met up at the dock at around 11:30am to take the boat back to Beacon. A group was arriving at that time...likely the 11:00am tour. Overall I had a great time on the tour...learned a lot and captured some great views. Be sure to leave time afterward (or before) to explore other attractions in Beacon...such as the shop-filled Main Street.

A qr code on the map can be scanned in order to obtain additional information on the sculptures. Some extra walking might need to be done in order to get to the foot of the sculptures. There are also bike rentals if interested. Staff are all kind and helpful. Just ask. Dress warm if you come this time of year. It's definitely a lot more colder then downstate. Cider in the outdoor cafe helped a bit. Will try to come back in warmer months as there's picnic tables that may make it a great day trip.

Even with our high expectations we were still very impressed. It's a 500+ acre museum where most of the works are monumental and/or site-specific sculptures. The $25 admission is a great deal for so much amazing art, and the equally amazing grounds. We spent 6+ hours here but didn't get to see everything. We were also just on foot, but they do have trams and bike rentals. The weather was gorgeous on the day of our visit and we were having a ball wending our way around leafy trails and expansive emerald meadows, all interspersed with works of art. There was also a re-creation of a Norman chateau that served as an indoor museum and gift shop. Their cafe was excellent; I got the French onion burger with veggie patty (mushroom-based, great flavor, with melted Gruyere) and an iced cold brew, and the hubby got a grilled cheese, which was also good. We had such a great time; would definitely love to visit Sharon

The signage for the most part is good, but picking the lane to get to needs to be addressed ahead of time with a better sign, especially if getting off from I-87 to I-84, NY 17K, and 300. If that's followed, you'll get off the right exit. On the other hand, for someone who's not familiar with the area, the chances of going the wrong way are high. Since I've been utilizing this for several years, I have no issues. The only advice I would give is just take it slow and follow the signs carefully. It would be awesome to see an upgrade, to make everyone's life a lot easier.

I don't think signage was a problem, but negligence to utilize the signage here, coupled with asking a question to the Thruway guys about jobs (for me), yeah - I think he really caused some grief to many who travel this route easily... Most of the other times that I've traveled this route, it's been in the daylight...but even with some poor experience, he should have utilized signs - something he's had problems with and couple that with his cataracts - yeah, not cool.
