THE HIDDEN GEM OF PERRY, GA!…read more While visiting the city of Perry, my husband and I decided to check out the local community theatre which was having an Open House today. This building has been around since the twenty's, and was originally a car dealership. It was acquired in the 1980's and converted into the theatre. It appears to be in great shape. We had an opportunity to chat with the director and some of the employees, Volunteers are in the process of preparing the stage, (priming and construction). for their next production, (Plaza Suite by Neil Diamond), with starts later this month. The director was very enthusiastic about it all and if I recall correctly, they are in their 34th year. It usually takes about seven weeks for them to get the stage set up and ready to go. While I was there, I wanted to check out the seating situation. The seats, (170), are great because they are cushioned and set in such a way they you have a great view of the stage from every angle. It also helps that the stage is large, open and quite close to the audience. This is truly community theatre as it is all volunteer and two of the current principles have had no prior acting experience. Everyone is encouraged to try out.and I would love to come down and actually see one of their productions. If you live close by, you should take the time to come by and support this local theatre. It is located in the heart of downtown, (on Main street), and would be a perfect option for "date night". Check out the website where you can purchase your tickets on line.

It is not a very big theatre and it is always mind blowing the tricks they do with their sets. Being so close to the audience you see the sets up close and personal. They are always so well dressed and built. The acting is very intimate and spot on. If you are in town or haven't been to this theatre you are missing out. There is nothing better than live theatre. They just closed their production of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Wow! I was in tears with the actors, it was a beautiful production. I cannot wait to go back!

Griffin is a small but quaint town just south of Atlanta. As you ride into this town there is a…read moresmall downtown Griffin area that looks like it could be a set for an old movie. Nestled among the store fronts is a little gem of a theatre called Main Street Players. If the town of Griffin is anything like the people who work at this theater then it must be the nicest and friendliest place on earth. I have seen three plays here. The first was The Dixie Swim Club. The show was great. The women were on spot with their line delivery and their comedic timing. The next was Grace and Gloire. I was a bit worried because the first show was so good I didn't know what to expect. Once again I was not disappointed. The timing and the comedy were there and we really enjoyed the show. The last show I saw was this past weekend called Tintypes. This turned out to be a musical and they had a band to boot. The singing blew me away. So far they are batting three for three. This is a little nonprofit that could and does. They have been around for a decade and there is a reason why. Great shows.

One of the great things about…read moreAthens-so much talent because of the University and the music culture-and this is a great venue to enjoy both drama and musical theater at a reasonable price. It's an all- volunteer venture, providing lots of opportunities to spend an enjoyable evening watching or participating in the events. It's not a large theater, so all the seats have a good view of the stage. The sound system and lighting are fine. Parking- limited, so go early. Location-just a block or so off a main thoroughfare (Prince Avenue) Behind one of the beautiful old white mansions -but watch for the small sign on Prince -it's easy to miss. There is free (good) coffee (provided by a local favorite, Jittery Jie's coffee) and a tiny concession stand.

And I have to say, this is probably one of my favorite places in all of Athens. I really like Town and Gown. It's sad that not more college students take the opportunity to go here, and act or direct or just generally have a good time helping or watching the shows. As it is, I know with the tragedy of what happened at the beginning of the summer, the people are tighter than ever, and it has only strengthened their resolve. $5 for sitting anywhere in the theater just can't be beat. The theater is small (and I wish it was bigger) but the fine quality of the acting really just makes this place a treasure for Athens. GO, get involved, and enjoy this place that I hope stays in Athens forever. 5 Stars well earned.
