I'd been hearing about this Venezuelan coffee shop in Harlem for quite some time, and finally had the opportunity to visit it on a weekend morning when they serve arepas. Ever since Caracas Arepa Bar's Williamsburg and East Village locations closed, the city has been lacking for quality Venezuelan arepa options. The coffee was good, and the arepa itself was excellent, with a wonderful soft texture. My main gripe was with the filling of my arepa con queso, which was advertised simply as cheese. I was expecting a pleasant Guyanese cheese as is typical, but instead was met with an off-puttingly large serving of lukewarm cheddar that would not have been out of place in your typical Ahmedabad street food video. I will be back to try the black bean arepa variety, which I suspect actually comes with queso guayanes. read more

Harlem has a lot of gems and this coffee house is definitely on the list. I Don't even want to share this spot with anyone now. The moment I walked in I was greeted with kindness from the baristas. This seemed very normal for them because everyone who walked in was equally greeted. You could also tell they are liked by the community by the amount of walk in traffic and the quick conversations that weren't awkward. There is plenty of seating, from the windows, a couple of tables, independent chaise chairs in the back, and then bar seating in the back. I grabbed a seat at a table, got comfortable and then went to order. I started out with a croissant with turkey and cheese and a Spanish latte made with oatmilk. Both were amazing. The latte was generously sized especially for the cost. I also later got an arepa that was filled with chicken smashed with avocado and mayo. It was delicious. I think about getting another. So firstly they don't have decaf so if you have an intolerance speak to Michael who was ultra helpful along with his coworker (a woman) suggested a milder blend and to lower the shots in the drink. I was scared but accepted their suggestion and was abundantly surprised at how spot on the drink was and I didn't get the jitters that non decaf coffee normally gives me. I love coming here while my son has his after-school program. It feels like you are in a rainforest when you are inside. I especially love the book tree with books you can borrow. They have a nice music selection. The only thing there is no wifi available. There are lots of people working on their laptops, though. It can get busy at times so there may not be inside seats and other times it can be empty. I love their pastry, especially their savory ham and cheese croissant and their sweet chocolate almond one. However, usually by the time I get there after my sons school around 3:30 pm, they are mostly sold out since they are so good. The batista is wonderful. Let me put at the top, so nobody misses it: I would strongly recommend going to Double Dutch, which is one block over, or Mushtari, which is on 126th in between Malcolm X and 5th. Both are great coffee shops with fantastic, friendly servers. I once got a free latte at Mushtari just because the barista was experimenting with recipes, was in a fun mood, and felt like treating everyone in the shop. Now on to why I recommend you don't give your business to Monkey Cup: The servers are aggressive and defensive. The tall thin woman with long brown hair tried to pick a fight with me about whether or not she had messed up my coffee order. When my coffee wasn't being called at the counter, and there was a different drink that was going unclaimed, I went up to the counter and said that I had ordered a particular drink, and that I thought maybe there had been a mix-up which could explain why there was an unclaimed drink. She started telling me that I was wrong and she always knew what people ordered, but that they could make me my drink anyway. I was pretty surprised, especially since it didn't seem relevant to get so defensive about it since they were going to make me the correct drink in the end, and so I said "I'm pretty sure I ordered (whatever drink), but either way yes I would appreciate the (correct drink), thank you." She again told me that I was wrong and that she remembered that I had ordered a different drink. I said "okay well either way it was a mistake, so could I please have (the correct drink)?" And so the barista (not this woman) started making it. The woman looked at me and said "okay but you did order the other drink. I usually know." She's wrong, but that's super beside the point. I've never seen any service worker act like that in my life. I regret leaving a tip when I ordered. That was insane behavior and I will not be back. So the first coffee shop stop of my recent trip to New York was The Monkey Cup in Harlem. I had seen them online when I was building my list and had to try it. If you know me, the third picture is what really drew me. Ambiance/vibe - We went in mid morning, and it was packed. It was a little smaller than realized, but if you got there early it could really work as a cozy little study place, but if you are there in rush like we were, you better be ready to order because they are a machine getting items out quickly and efficiently. Food - This location did offer Arepas as their primary food option. We had just eaten before arriving so I did not try them, but they smelled good. They also offered so many fresh baked pastries. They were so beautiful, and when I saw they had a fresh peach danish, I couldn't resist. It was everything!!! Coffee - Now this was interesting. I usually get a vanilla iced coffee, cold brew, or latte to compare with other places. For the first time I encountered a place that didn't serve vanilla. It was fine, but I think just threw me off when ordering. Looking back, I probably would have got one of their specialty lattes to try instead. However, the drink that I did get still tasted good. No wifi!! This is an exceptionally cute and cozy cafe in Harlem with great service that does adorable monkey latte art. Their prices are comparatively on the lower side, which makes it even better. The decor just feels so warm and inviting, and makes you want to stay longer. They have a nice clean bathroom here too, and plenty of seating. I came here with a friend on a Monday morning around 10:30am, and we had a great time chatting and trying to get some work done. I tried their Spanish latte and a croissant, and my friend got an oat milk latte and an almond croissant. We both thought the lattes were good, but croissants not so much.
