What makes or breaks a breakfast spot for me is the coffee. This coffee had to be the worst yet. It completely lacked any flavor - I didn't know that was even possible! I'll never understand why establishments serve cheap coffee. I understand it is a capital expensive business, but this is a corner that should not be cut. I'm not expecting Starbucks, but something above what tastes like it was bought off a pallet at a warehouse big-box store. I'll return for the pancakes, but enjoy my coffee beforehand at the nice coffee shop directly across the street.

Wjat was upsetting is that we noticed they are now adding hidden costs to your meal. I had a steak sandwich with onions and peppers. They charged me $2 for onions and $2 for peppers, adding an extra $4 for the meal. The added cost was not indicated on the menu, nor did the server disclose it. Another person changed out their two slices of standard toast for a slice of whole grain. That was a $1 added charge. Visitors should check their bills closesly since Varsity Inn seems to now want to add a charge for any little thing. The following night, I had a hamburger at another restaurant, and there was not an added charge for onion. Looks like we'll go elsewhere so we don't get hit with added, hidden charges.

Therefore we settled on huevos rancheros and the breakfast tacos. Wow! again. Everything is cooked to order and was crazy fresh. I mean garden fresh. The onions were sweet and crunchy. The tomatoes were firm and juicy. The black beans were delicious. For both dishes the street taco sized tortillas were freshly grilled, crispy edges and delicate centers that didn't break despite being generously filled. We also got a side order of home fries that were kind of magical. No ads-ins, onions or pepper. No additional salt to be detected. Just small potatoes cut in halves and wedges, subtle, even seasoning throughout. Simple. Absolutely delicious. Our only regret was finding Brenda's on the last morning of our stay but we come down a couple times a summer and will absolutely put this on top rotation! Loved everything about our visit.
