I'm not really drawn to this kind of cuisine normally, but my friends suggested we try it this weekend when had a long overdue dinner out. They are really big into German spots, and I have mixed feelings. The restaurant is super cute inside and out with a Bavarian vibe outside and lots of wood inside. The dining room is pretty small and cozy, and it was relatively quiet inside so we could have easy conversations. Our server was wonderful and made some great recommendations, especially the cucumber salad. I ordered that and the chicken paprikas. The sauce was so good. It was creamy, had a good flavor, and nothing about it made me feel heavy or like I was heading into a food coma. The cucumber salad was phenomenal. Our waiter threw out the suggestion "it has garlic and some other flavor, and there's sour cream on the side" I basically told him I trust the suggestion and bring it however I should have it. You guys I love the cucumber salad at Asian spots and I'm kind of sitting here like "wtf this one is better." Convert. My friends got an order of it to go. The owners checked in on us a few times, making sure everything was good, asking for feedback, wanting to know how we found them, etc. It truly is a mom n pop that cares. It really felt like visiting family and not some weird overbearing thing. The only complaint I have isn't even a complaint. But both my friends sat on the bench along the windows and bashed knees on the table getting out. So caveat - watch your legs getting in and out :) read more

This is a delightful family owned business. It has seating for about 28 people total. We arrived at about 430 pm on a Sunday, so between the lunch and supper rush. There was one waiter and I believe one cook in the back for this time of day. This is not meant to be a fast food restaurant, instead, it is a place to relax, unwind and enjoy time between courses. The food was delicious! It is about an hour from our home, but only about 20 minutes from either Ruth Eckerd Hall or the Mahaffey and close to US 19 in Largo, so I am sure we will return when we are in the area; it is worth the drive. read more

The strawberry soda was amazing!! The schnitzel was very good and so was the spatzel. I don't like mushrooms so I made the mistake of ordering the brown gravy which didn't go well with the chicken schnitzel but I ended up eating it plain because it was so good it didn't even need gravy. Finally, the apple strudel was so light and fluffy and the service was great! We can't wait to go back!! Oh and my husband's Hungarian stew and potatoes were divine. read more

Monika is a cozy restaurant tucked away in Largo. The interior walls are wooden, and it makes you feel like you're in a cabin! We were a group of 9 who made a reservation ahead of time. They combined some tables to accommodate us. Two friends are vegan and the chef was kind enough to create a butternut squash dish for them to enjoy! I had a warm goulash on a cold Florida winter day. It was very hearty and filling. I also had some of my fiancé's schnitzel with gravy. The gravy was delicious and complemented the dish well. I also dipped French fries in it. So delicious! It was interesting to discover this European restaurant here in Pinellas County. All-in-all it comes across as pretty authentic and provided a very nice ambiance for our pre-Mother's Day dinner. The owner / chef came out and greeted us and other customers which was a nice touch, but we had to wonder at what cost, as it took a long time to get food. That was undoubtedly our biggest disappointment - that it just took far too long to be served, which resulted in a very lengthy meal and we did not have time to experience dessert which we were looking forward to. read more

A New Restaurant with Mixed Results Monika's is small and intimate and charmingly decorated. White tablecloths and uniformed servers harken a higher-end dining experience. Servers are very nice but slow, probably due to the kitchen. Prices are reasonable. I started with the Danube Trio appetizer. It was three dips/spreads with some very tasty tomatoes and fresh cucumber to dip. All were very good, and the eggplant one was great. It could serve as a sauce on most any savory item. For my main I had the Chicken Paprikas--a dish that should be a hallmark for any Hungarian restaurant. The chicken was nicely cooked and tender. Unfortunately, the sauce was rather bland and needed a lot more seasoning. The sour cream should provide some tang to the sauce but was undetectable. The accompanying spätzle was flat and needed a lot of salt. I'll try Monika's again in the future and sample some different dishes on the menu. Hopefully, the seasoning will be better. Since they only opened recently, I was a bit generous with the stars--this time. read more

This is, in my opinion the best restaurant I've eaten at in a long time! Food was excellent! Service was great and Monika and Chad were very friendly and made me feel like I've known them forever. What a pleasant couple. My friend with Hungarian heritage was in love with the food and the at home feeling of this place. Monika and Chad came to our table and were discussing the different foods and how they started out and met and finally came to Florida. A Piece of Hungary in the Heart of the City If you want the real deal, you have to visit Monika European Kitchen. I am 100% Hungarian and have traveled back to Hungary four times in the last seven years, and I can tell you: this is the most authentic food I have found yet. One bite took me straight back to my Mother's and Grandmothers' kitchens. It's rare to find flavors that carry that much soul and memory. The Hungarian Wine and Food Experience was the highlight--WOW. Many people only know "Bulls Blood," but the wine selection here proves that Hungary is producing world-class variety. The restaurant itself is small and intimate, giving it a warm, welcoming vibe. What makes it special is the owners; they are on the floor, walking and talking with guests, making you feel like family. Of course, every Hungarian family has their own regional twist on certain dishes, but for my palate, Monika's was absolutely spot on. Please support this incredible new gem. I don't know what to mention first, because the food, the service and the ambiance were all superior. My family and I came in for Mother's Day where they went above and beyond to have it decorated for the special day, even had a photobooth set up and gave gifts to moms who came in. The food was also amazing. We got the goulash and the beef stew, both of which were cooked to perfection. The staff was extremely friendly and were more than willing to take their time to explain what each dish is and even gave coloring books and colored pencils to my kids who were getting antsy. Caring, hands on ownership, and service.
