I came to Babushka's Hyde Park because I've been wanting to try a new cuisine and it completely delivered. We started with the Feather & Rye appetizer: chicken pâté with apple chutney and crispy onions on rye bread. I'd never had chicken pâté before and was honestly a little hesitant, but it was incredible. The chutney cuts through the richness perfectly and the crispy onions add just the right texture. For mains, I had the lamb chops that were beautifully seasoned and my boyfriend had the Chicken Kyiv, which he described as buttery and cheesy in the best possible way. The atmosphere is warm and intimate with really thoughtful Russian details throughout like the matryoshka dolls, the painted dishware, the candlelight. It feels special without being stuffy. I've been here a couple times and I really wish it was as good as the one in the USF area because I want it to be just as good and both visits to this location have been subpar. My first visit was with an event and not a normal set up, but wasn't impressed during that visit...and it really set the tone for the next visit.. I really didn't want to come back. But I did, it deserves a second chance, but unfortunately it fell short yet again. The service was friendly enough, but not great. When I ordered an item off the menu, they told me it wasn't available. So I then needed another minute to decide what I wanted. When the server returned I ordered another item and again, they didn't have it. But then proceeded to tell me all the items that were not available that evening. WHY wouldn't he have said when the first item wasn't available, all the other items that weren't available. I really wanted some vegetables....so when I couldn't have really much of anything but the dumplings, I asked if I could have some of the vegetables from the entrees that were all unavailable with the dumplings but he said he could not do that. I think the language barrier created some issues in this case. They couldn't accommodate much of anything. That's too bad. I won't be back to this location. read more

Came here to celebrate my mom's birthday. I personally love this place and was excited to introduce them to it. The parking lot is small but they offer additional parking in the rear. We made a reservation for 3 on OpenTable and we were seated immediately at a cozy table. Our server was fantastic! We started off sharing the Feather and Rye, the Siberian Pelmeni, and the Mushroom Bliny. The Feather and Rye was a creamy chicken pate served on top of thinly sliced rye bread and topped with an apple chutney and crispy onions. The Siberian Pelmeni is traditional Russian dumplings filled with pork and beef. It is served with a side of sour cream. The Mushroom Bliny is served as 3 traditional thin pancakes filled with mushroom and mozzarella cheese and a spinach rémoulade. All 3 appetizers were great and unique. I think they all paired well together. My favorite might be the Feather and Rye if I had to pick! My mom and I shared the Chicken Kyiv and my dad ordered the Beef Stroganoff. I'm not personally a fan of Beef Stroganoff but my dad enjoyed it. The Chicken Kyiv was supposed to be filled with butter, cheese, and herbs. I did not see the cheese or herbs. I only saw a lot of butter. It is served with mashed potatoes and a boyar sauce. For dessert we shared the Honey Cake and the Napoleon. There are 5 parking spots including handicapped on the paved part of their lot and an additional amount in the gated area accessible from Platt or S blvd. The service was fantastic from the host, to the server to the food runners. I ordered the Samson Original which they were out of, and instead got Kozel which was fantastic. My friends got the St. Pete Mule which you can swap out for any of their vodka flavors how ever the bartender says it's the best the way it comes! For food, my friends got the Borscht, Serbian Pelmeni and the Khinkali. They had nothing but raving reviews. I ordered the Veggie Grill which came with mostly unseasoned vegetables but delicious potatos. Really unique Eastern European dishes that stood out. The inside decor is super cute and cozy with a cool dacha vibe, and the staff was friendly and attentive throughout. The place was packed, which says something about its popularity. That said, the location feels a bit odd, and we ended up sitting outside since it was so busy--the outdoor dining area isn't my favorite (not as charming as inside), though it was still pleasant enough. We tried the smoked chocolate old fashioned, the samovar spritz (with in house infused vodka-yum!!) and the Siberian sour! All were delicious! They held our reserved table for us while we finished our cocktails at the bar. They were extremely accommodating! At dinner, the Chicken Kyiv was filled with hot melted butter and baked perfectly! Had such a great experience at Babushka's celebrating a friend's birthday. The ambiance was amazing, cozy, stylish, and perfect for a fun night out. The service was truly top notch and made the whole experience even better. We ordered the flan espresso martini which was absolutely delicious and perfectly balanced. The samsa was so good, especially with the adjika, packed with flavor and easily one of our favorite bites of the night. The mushroom bliny were probably my favorite thing - so savory, creamy with a delicious dill sauce. My boyfriend was amazed by his borscht with so much flavor. The samsa were perfectly crispy and flaky. We got the entree sampler to split so we could try everything -- beef stroganoff was my favorite, the lamb rice was a little dry and their stuffed cabbage was tasty. I've been to Babushka's Hyde Park location about 3-4 times now. I love the authentic feel of the restaurant. All of the servers are always so kind and make you feel like family. My favorite item is the mushroom bliny (kind of like a crepe with mushroom and cheese filling) which has beautiful dill and mushroom flavor. The crepe itself has a subtle sweetness that is absolutely delicious. The smoked salmon on the Amur bruschetta is also very yummy and the entire dish is very light and summery. I love the beef stroganoff for a heartier meal. Their menu has many different options and a surprising number of vegetarian dishes. I also appreciate the variety in drink options, my favorite being the kompot (homemade juice from cherry, black currant, and strawberry). Babushka's is a wonderful Tampa restaurant, and I highly recommend stopping by--you're definitely in for a treat! read more

I found a "diamond" of a restaurant in Hyde Park (Tampa) Babushka's!! We had the best appetizers, a fresh bread with soft cheeses and an egg-yolk on top! It was delightful. We were there during peak dinner hours on a Friday evening and still received great service! It's Christmas Day and nothing is open. We see this little gem show up on the available options with one table left! From the minute we stepped in the door to when we sat down, we felt like family. They burst with juicy savory flavor the minute you bite into them, and getting them pan fried is in our opinion the perfect way to enjoy them. Amazing food, service, and atmosphere. We got the creme brulee espresso martini. Spectacular. mimosa was great as well. started with the "Draniki" with cured salmon and got a dill dip on the side. Amazing start to the meal. We then ordered "Not your babuska waffles" which was the perfect mix of savory and sweet with an amazing poppy buttery topping and melon balls. We came in tonight and were not sure what to expect. When you walk in you first feel like you are walking into your babushkas house but then the dining room opens up to reveal a nicely decorated dining area with high ceilings. The decoration is very traditional. It gives a warm feeling. There was live music which was nice but made it a little hard to have a conversation. We started with the Adjaruli Khachapuri which was a type of bread shaped like a boat with some yummy melted cheese in the middle and an egg yolk on top. We were unsure what this would taste like because the egg yolk is raw but the waiter explained that you just mix it with the warm cheese and then dip the bread into it. It was tasty and we enjoyed it! As our main entree we all ordered the Chicken Shashlyk which was delicious. There is a tzatziki type of dipping sauce which is so yum! Cocktails were good I ordered Sergey's Strawberry Lemonade and hubby got the Kyiv mule. And we made sure to save room for dessert and ended up sharing the Napoleon between 3 of us. read more
