Occasionally, I stop by this Jewel-Osco to pick up a few items. It used to be my go-to grocery…read morestore back in the day, but this visit reminded me why it no longer is. As soon as I walked in, the store felt dated, from the lighting and décor to the overall atmosphere. I came to take advantage of a $7 off $7 purchase promotion Jewel offered to celebrate the Bears' win over the Green Bay Packers on January 10, 2026. The promotion was supposed to be redeemed with a digital coupon between January 12 and 16. I have been part of their loyalty program for a while, and this was my first time clipping one of their digital coupons on my desktop. When I checked out at the self-checkout, the $7 discount did not apply, even after I entered my phone number and confirmed I was connected to my Jewel loyalty account. The staff overseeing the area kept asking to see the coupon on my phone app. I did not realize I also had to download their app, since clipping the digital coupon on a computer is all that is required with Mariano's. The staff was not particularly friendly, but he did manually take $7 off this time.  I thanked him for his help and mentioned the convenience of Mariano's system, fully expecting the response of "we are not Mariano's," and that was exactly what I got. Haha. That is also why Jewel is not my primary grocery store anymore. Unfortunately, the Bears lost their following game on January 18 and ended the season abruptly, so I will not need to worry about redeeming another Jewel digital coupon anytime soon.

I really try to give grocery stores the benefit of the doubt, but every time I shop at Jewel, I…read morewalk away disappointed. The produce is consistently poor quality--bruised, wilted, or already going bad. It's frustrating when you can't rely on basics like fruits and vegetables to be fresh. On top of that, the store just feels dirty. The floors, shelves, and overall appearance look like they haven't been properly managed. If I go, it's only for an emergency and a handful of items. I try to do self check out, everytime the machine has an issue and it takes forever for someone to come and help fix it. I have left a few times without any items. Staying hopeful this can be corrected.

I like the coupons although I wish I could just check them all off with one click. The produce department has a terrific variety. Bakery is good too. Meat department is good although they run out of lamb chops too often but the fish is almost always good. Pharmacy is great, very friendly and accommodating with vaccines and scripts. Not as many long lines at check-out as there used to be, even on holidays. Self checkout assistance is very good. I'm totally satisfied and have met the manager and he has been very helpful. Prices are too high but I think that's just the sign of the times.

Their coupons often have great deals, even though they sometimes do not ring up correctly without assistance ,but at least they try to offer discounts. Lately, however, I have noticed the produce stock has become inconsistent, the quality has diminished, and I can no longer rely on availability the way I once could. This used to be my dependable last-minute shopping stop, but unfortunately not anymore. What disappointed me most was an experience I recently had while shopping for groceries. I noticed many wilted flowers and potted plants being thrown away, so I politely asked if they could donate them instead. I spoke with Scott, the manager, and was disappointed by how bluntly and unwillingly he responded. He said they were already donating to an old age center, while the florist mentioned they had stopped donating there long ago. It was discouraging to see so much waste when those flowers could still be used meaningfully by churches or community spaces where they are appreciated throughout the day. The rude and unfriendly interaction made the experience even more disappointing.

Out of all the Walgreens stores that I have been to, the one in Deerfield Square stands out as the…read moremost pleasant one to shop at. This Walgreens is large and airy, bright and clean, with a more upscale feel to it. It is fully stocked. One big advantage of this store is that it is opened 24 hours a day! Another factor that impresses me most is the store's management. It has not just one, but two very nice and helpful managers. It had happened that I had clipped a $9 digital coupon online. Its requirement was to spend $40(or $30?) in a Walgreens store and I would get the coupon when I checked out. However, it didn't happen even after I spent the required amount. Long story short, the female manager was very nice and helpful, she apologized and manually added a $10 credit to my Walgreens loyalty account. When I went home and checked my Walgreens account online, I didn't see the added $10. So, the next time I went to this Walgreens, I talked to another manager, Sergio. The female manager had gone for the day. Sergio was very patient, kind, and helpful. To our surprise, he found that I actually had two accounts with Walgreens (apparently a mixed-up done by the pharmacy of another Walgreens), one with a slightly different name. The female manager had somehow credited the account that I did not know I had, and therefore did not actively use. Sergio gave me the phone number of their tech support department that could help me eliminate one of the accounts (that I will call, I promise). When I was checking out, he rushed over to make sure that I could apply my $10 credit without any problems. Kudos to Sergio! Now, as I know that I have two accounts, I am mindful to tell the cashier which one to use, until I can get one eliminated, or get them combined.

The beer and wine I selected didn't have prices on the shelves and now I know why. The pricing was outrageous nearly double what I would have payed elsewhere. A few years back, this same location used to be the White Hen Pantry, which never really impressed me. It sat unoccupied for a while, and only recently did I notice that HP Food & Beverages had set up shop here. It's conveniently located at the very front of the Garrity Square shopping plaza, which has just enough parking for most times of the day. When you walk in, you'll see a good selection of snacks - chips, popcorn, candy, instant foods, cookies, nuts, jerky, meat sticks, and more - in the first aisles. They feature a variety of my favorite snack, Slim Kim Popcorn by local company Highland Pop. They have a sensibly modest selection of grocery items one might expect from a decent convenience store, at reasonable prices. In the back are coolers with a number of sodas, sparkling water, juice, milk, and other refreshing drinks. They even have a slushie machine running in the back. At the counter they also have a selection of phone accessories, mints, gum, and other odds & ends at the checkout counter. Where HP Food & Beverages shines brighter than the other convenience stores in the immediate area is the huge selection of alcoholic beverages. They have a number of popular and less-common canned and bottled beers in the fridges along the back wall, and in bigger cases in the aisles. I'm particularly happy that they have cold 16 fl. oz. tallboy 6-packs of Hamm's, which is one of my favorite American macro lagers. In the middle they have a nice selection of bottled and a few boxed wines. Behind the counter they have an impressive selection of liquor and liqueurs. I noticed several of my favorite whiskey varieties, and at very reasonable prices. I chatted with the guy behind the counter for a little bit, and he recommended several new single malt scotch and a blended whiskey that I might like. He definitely knew his products, suggesting that much of the selection is carefully curated. Between their convenient location, good selection, reasonable prices, and friendly service; HP Food & Beverages is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I'll be sure to stop by more often when I need a quick snack or to pick up some drinks.
