A guten morgen to you too friendly waitress.
Cafe Konditorei Monarchie is my first non-touristy venture in Vienna. Luckily, I walked into a very cute, baroque coffee shop that has a great English menu and serves a serious breakfast.
I had all my German phrases stuffed into a sheet of paper, and the waitress probably took some English in high school. Together, we managed to make it through the thing. It did take a bit of effort though.
The classic English breakfast with 2 Kaiser pastries and 2 eggs sunnysideup on top of ham was exquisite. The cocoa and orange juice - fresh and the utmost deliciousness. Now I can go back to the States and tell my friends that all the other Kaiser rolls they had was a lie. Before Monarchie I used to eat Kaiser rolls with ham and cheese and maybe mayo. In Monarchie I just find myself eating it rare - like steak.
My travel buddy was equally impressed by her unconventional croquet, which was a thinner horseshoe pastry with the layers. It looked awkward but tasted great.
I can just imagine sitting here for hours and indulging in the relaxed coffee culture of Vienna. If only I had a few more days here... read more
