Stopped in here on a Friday night because the boyfriend and I wanted to sit outside. We were sat right away. Had quite a few tabled inside along with a bar and patio seating. Our service was spectacular, we were greeted as soon as we were sat, drinks came right away, and the food didn't take very long either. I had a vegetarian burrito and a giant margarita. We called ahead and were told we would be seated within 5 minutes of arrival. Once we got there (10 minutes earlier than our original ETA) they said it would be 20 minutes to be seated. 30 minutes later we asked about how much longer it would be to get a seat and they said maybe 20 minutes. We waited for an hour total and then were told that they could only seat us outside but it was raining and the outdoor seating wasn't completely covered. We told the manager that we were going to leave because we were waiting outdoors and the forecast was showing it was going to start to downpour and his response to us was "Sorry-it's not raining inside!" Last night was our third time to Mojave. Our previous two times to the restaurant weren't outstanding or particularly memorable, but satisfying enough to get us to come back. We don't have many bad restaurant experiences in metro Detroit, so I was really surprised by how truly bad our food was last night! I'd give just one star, but having had decent experiences before, and considering that the chips, salsa and guac were very, very good, I wanted to give 2. The bad: - we were told it would be a 20-25 min wait and we waited over 45 mins (somewhat excusable since it was a Friday night... But still... As a pregnant woman I probably would have opted to go somewhere else if I would have known. I was hungry!) - Service was slow, but so was everything. Seems like the waitress was over-worked or maybe had tables in other sections that were far from ours. - I ordered a cup of soup with my meal and didn't get it until about half way through my entree... Again, honest mistake that likely would have been completely overlooked by me if it wasn't for... The ugly! Read on... Lol The ugly: - I ordered the tacos Mexicanos (one steak, one chicken and one pork) and all three of the meats were horribly dry! Like inexcusably dry... I wouldn't feed this to my dogs.. dry. The steak was actually not even edible. It looked like dry chopped skirt steak but tasted like dirt and was a little crumbly in texture. I'm not exaggerating. It was so disgusting, no amount of salsa was going to make eating that taco worth it. I managed to chow down the other two using the salsa-dousing method. - After eating a while, my husband found not one but two fruit flies crawling (not flying away, so seems like they might have been in there a while?) around in his cilantro lime rice... Yuuuuuck. We were at the restaurant for over two hours, so by the end of it I just wanted out of there. I have a background in the service industry, and normally if I have food this bad somewhere I would say something... But it was almost 10pm and my patience was up. I have been pretty bummed out because we really liked this place when it opened. The last 3 visits everything is just going downhill fast. I don't see the owners here anymore, that might have something to do with it. Service used to be a consistent 7-8, now it feels more like 2-3. I feel like there is a rule that Ritas MUST sit at the service bar forever because every one we get feels like the ice has been melting for 1/2 an hour. Food seems different, not so fresh anymore, feels more like a chain now. Wife insists that Mojave is now out of rotation for us. read more

What do you get when a half Chaldean-half Greek guy opens a Mexican restaurant? Mediocre "Mexican" food. I'll start my review by complimenting the waitstaff, our server was quite prompt, refilling my beverage generously, and was polite. I ordered a sort of sampler meal, it had a rib eye steak, 4 quesadillas, and a shredded chicken chimi. The steak was dry and bland, the "chef" seems to have the same exact grilling skills as my father. The quesdilllas were soaking wet, thrown into the steak juices radiating out of the meat. The shredded chicken chimi was merely a flour tortilla featuring shredded chicken, topped with what seemed to be Prego pasta sauce, and a few sprinkles of the ol' shredded cheese. My wife had some weird dish, I accidentally talked her out of getting the "Mexican" dishes there, which perhaps was for the best. She said she liked it, but she had one of those looks your spouse gives you when they're lying. We consumed no alcohol, my gal had water and I, a diet coke. (I prefer the taste to regular, not cutting cals) and our bill was $50.00. I generally have absolutely no issue paying twice that for meals on a once weekly basis, but for that I would have rather had Taco Bell, I've had better attempts at "Mexican" food there, honestly. To those of you who consider this food in anyway "Authentic Mexican", than you truly have never lived. Stay on 14 Mile for about 9 more miles, El Charro's is on the right. read more

We (my fiancé and I) really wanted to like this place as it is close by, casual, and there really aren't any Mexican places near Clawson.. However, our experience was a disaster. I did try and take into account that the place is new and still trying to work out the kinks, but from the time we sat down until the time we walked out (with one of us having never been served our food!) was just bad. Though our server appeared to be trying hard, she among everyone else on the staff (aside from the bartenders) seemed totally lost. First, we placed our orders for food and drinks.. After a long wait for the drinks, and half way through our cocktails, our same waitress comes back and honestly asked if we were ready to order?? Considering she took our order 10+ mins prior, we thought it was a joke. No joke. She assured us she did put in our food order, and we even reminded what we ordered. Finally when the food came out, one order was totally wrong! We sent it back and ordered an $11 cocktail, resolved to wait for his meal. Well, the 3x we asked about the cocktail and more chips and salsa from 2 different people never came, so we cancelled the delayed order and got out of there. Needless to say, we will not be trying this anytime soon. Food was ok, but not worth the poor service and lost staff. read more

I'm not quite sure where all other reviewers who raved about the food ate, but it surely wasn't Mojave Cantina. The service was great. The waitress was both friendly and upbeat; if only the cool had the same enthusiasm about their food that the waitress had in serving us. They seem to use a cheap, low moisture cheese that doesn't melt (except under high temperatures), the rice was water logged and tasted like a bad packet of pre-cooked rice you find on a grocery shelf, and the beans are straight from a can. The chips and salsa were good, but the salsa tasted slight like mildew "fridge smell" (I apologize that this is the best analogy I have). The chicken in my enchiladas was ok, but the tortillas were sub par and the cheese in my girlfriend's enchiladas did not seem correct as it wasn't melted properly and seemed more like the same shredded cheese that had also not melted on top. Better quality cheese (as well as selecting the appropriate cheese for a menu item), more flavor, and more passion for cooking (such an easy menu) and I would return. read more

Our trip to Mojave started out well enough - our server was very friendly and efficient, and the salsa and chips she brought were just fine (begging to differ with previous Yelpers, who wanted more salt on the chips and complained about their "storebought" taste: really, what did you expect here - little elderly mamacitas pounding out the tortillas on their laps? Come on.). After the apps, unfortunately, things took a downhill slide. The co-diner had chicken & cheese enchiladas with poblano sauce, while I had the same type of enchilada with a different sauce. Both were, sadly, quite tasteless. Having made poblano sauce at home, we relish the real thing, properly made. This did not fit the bill. Guess our search for good, nearby (Oakland County) Mexican comida will have to continue. read more

Okay, I understand this place has a three star rating but I have no idea why. The place is clean, the service is good, and the food is actually excellent. The chili was sublime, meaty and complex with tons of flavor. The table side chips were fresh and homemade, the salsa perfect with a nice smokey quality and a good dash of Cilantro. I had the chorizo botana for an entree and I couldn't finish it, it was simply excellent. If you want to try a New Mexican place this is a very good option. I loved this meal. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!! The atmosphere is LOUD, can hardly hear someone from across the table, everyone talking in the restaurant creates the most god awful echoing. The food was inedible. I had the chicken quesadillas. Literally there was NO TASTE. it was a tortilla, grilled chicken and cheese. It was bland. It came with a side of shredded lettuce and tomatoes. There was no sour cream, guacamole or anything to give any type of flavor. The only decent thing about this place was the salsa. At least it was homemade. The chips are straight out of a bag. I've been to the establishment twice now. It's a beautiful setting, well decorated and comfortable. My last visit was more disappointing than the first. First for a party of five, the hostess attempted to sit us a four top- and looked a bit put out when we asked for a larger table in the main dining room that we'd already passed. Next - the seasonal cocktail wasn't available. The food is well, ok, but nothing to go out of the way for. (I had guacamole, queso, chicken taquitos.) To their credit, there's a happy hour & outdoor seating, plus the beer options are ok. If you just want to drink outside in Clawson (the only thing I can really recommend here), there are better options with better service within walking distance. 2015 update. 1-star. I love downtown Clawson & decided this place was worth a second try. Really disappointed. Numerous dirty tables hadn't been bussed, with food & plates left on them. The floors were dirty. We were looking for somewhere to eat on date night/fourth of July, and my girlfriend brought up mojave. She'd been there once with a co-worker and had enjoyed the food, so she wanted me to try it out. After putting our name on the list, we noticed a couple at the bar boxing up their food and decided to try the bar out. The bartender did everything but acknowledge us. After waiting for about 15-20 minutes without being given a menu, a glass of water, a hello, or having the bar in front of us cleared from the previous guest we decided to just go to a table. We then watched the next two couples that sat down after us, get greeted and served drinks immediately. After seeing that, we decided to go somewhere else. We couldn't understand the difference between us and those other guests. I don't think we'll ever be back. If we are, we won't be sitting at that bar. read more

Had high hopes, but left disappointed The good: The salsa, refried beans The bad: The chips tasted store bought and lacked salt (trend with this place) and didn't taste like much. I got the steak fajitas. My wife got the enchiladas. Food arrived the steak was rubbery and oddly tasted like it was reheated. Even looking at it you could tell it was cut into strips from something like a rump roast. No color on it just a sad grey.... It also didn't taste like anything. The peppers and onions were good, but when you put everything into the tortilla all you could taste was the corn tortilla. The beans were good but you can tell they are from a can. As others have said the rice is definitely from a box or something like that. It reminds me of that rice in a pouch that you hear up in a microwave. I didn't try my wife's food but she said it was just ok. ll in all everything seemed to be premise or store bought. We probably won't be back where there are so many other good Mexican places. read more

Went to Mojave for lunch...they just opened, so I understand that they are still learning. I love the decor...very mission viejo California...the wood is great, the colors are awesome, the doors are fantastic...I should end here on a positive note. I ordered the $7 traditional Mexican lunch special with 2 tacos al pastor and tortilla soup. The pork was almost sawdust dry and had no flavor. I almost tasted the cilantro but it was completely overwhelmed with the sautées onion flavor. The tortilla soup was heat hot...that was the only flavor. The stips of tortilla made for a nice textual contrast, but there was no flavor whatsoever. The chips were OK...the thick kind...the mild salsa had HUGE chunks of tomato, the hot salsa (Mojave) was bland, and the Diabla had a great kick!! I don't know why restaurants insist on taking the Mexican out of the Mexican...but I will try again in a while...at least for the decor; otherwise, I guess it's back to El Guanaco!! read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch, I was in the mood for queso. Server was polite, service was good (there were only about 3 people there, it was like 3 pm). The food was not impressive- the queso is like machine-nacho cheese with tomato chunks in it. I ended up with a $2 up charge to change something in a combo from meat item to a cheese-only item. It's not a huge charge bit it's just one of those things- you KNOW that what I'm getting actually costs less than the original dish. Had to ask for the guac hat I was supposed to get with the combo, which was left off because I changed an item. So I paid about $32 dollars for a coke, appetizer and meal including tip- all for food that I could have made better at home. The price for convenience. I've eaten here 3 times in the past 10 days. The food is fantastic and the margaritas are the best in the area with fresh squeezed lime juice - no pre-mix. The servers have been busy but very friendly and attentive. The food is much better than your average Michigan stuff (I'm from Texas). I've had steak nachos, carnitas and a burrito. All super good. For a change of venue from Grand Azteca I thought I'd give this place a shot. It was pretty decent...not amazing but pretty good all around. I tried their white sangria which was fruity without having any actual fruit in the glass...kind of like a yellow Hawaiian Punch. Their salsa is made in house from what I could tell and I think they use roasted veggies...it was mild but nicely done. I liked it...and with their guacamole it was a great start. I ordered the Tacos Mexicanos...three al pastor pork tacos with dual soft shell tortillas and rice and beans, with limes on the side. The tacos were filled nicely and the meat was tender with fresh ingredients and the rice and beans were great. I'd order these again...for $10 I got a decent amount of food. It's nothing fancy or spectacular but they do a nice plate of Mexican food. That said, I'd like to see a little more creativity but this isn't Imperial. Service was very friendly and attentive and seating was mostly comfortable except for the tables by the pole, which were very wobbly. VERY SLOW SERVICE!!! We were there 2 hours and 40 minutes for dinner last night!!! (We are a family of 4.) The place was not packed while we were there either. (It was a Sunday at 5:30 pm.) The manager was full of excuses and so was the waitress. They kept blaming the kitchen staff for being too slow. Then they blamed the hot weather and too many customers. I'm sorry but I don't give a damn about your excuses! A good manager at a good restaurant makes no excuses, accepts FULL responsibility, then goes in the kitchen and kicks some ass! The waitress said they were all out of tortilla chips but we watched everyone around us getting their food and lo and behold they all had tortilla chips! She also told us they were all out of salsa but yet again as we sat there over two hours, we watched everyone around us receiving bowls of salsa. The food was decent. I had the sampler platter and it was very good. However the pork Carnitas were terrible. They come with some type of disgusting mix of pineapple and mango so they are extremely sweet. The chimichangas were good and the tacos as well. I wish I would have ordered the sampler platter as my dinner. The manager ended up paying for our food because our experience was so terrible. That lady needs to get her crap together, put her big girl pants on, and be a manager! read more

Just about the only good thing about this dining experience was the manager greeting us at the door when my friend and I walked in, and being sat right away. But I will say that the manager should perhaps consider buttoning his shirt up another level or so to avoid looking so sleazy. And hairy. SERVICE: awful. No refills on drinks, no extra napkins, no return checkup, and this was all the while there were about 4-5 servers as well as the manager sitting around looking bored out of their skulls. Horrible image to set for your diners. Either teach them how to look busy, or don't keep so many people on staff. FOOD: mediocre at BEST. I had some version of their enchiladas, which were bland, greasy, and barely warm. The margarita I ordered was quite weak (just FYI). Chips and salsa are okay, and the "sopapillas" are disappointing. My husband and I drove past Mojave Cantina on our way to Clawson Steakhouse. We turned around once we got there because we thought Mexican food sounded great and we had been meaning to come here. When we stepped into the restaurant, we started doubting our decision. It took a few minutes for the manager to come seat us, and during that time we heard a waitress yell at a bartender and watched another waitress stop and stare at us before wandering off. Once seated we realized this place is LOUD. It's hard to have a conversation with normal indoor voices. That was a major turn-off. The service was mediocre, too, which left us feeling funny about the whole place. My margarita tasted like it came from a mix. My steak fajitas came out on one of those sizzling platters except it wasn't sizzling -- not even a little! This is probably just my conditioning because I have eaten at many, many midwest Tex-Mex places, but honestly, that is just how people do fajitas. If fajitas come out on a non-sizzling platter, you're doing something wrong. The fajitas were also really strongly flavored -- lots of chili powder, or something like that -- and it was fine but not my taste. The flour tortillas are definitely not made in-house. My husband liked his enchiladas poblanos well enough, and he finished both his and my portion of beans and rice. The salsa was smoky and good. We might come back because it's the best dine-in Mexican place we've found in this area, which is really more of a statement about Mexican food in Metro Detroit than the quality of food here. read more

We went here because this establishment was the choice of one of our friends who was having a goodbye (moving) party. The only thing that I can say is, why in the heck haven't I found this place sooner! Since I am vegetarian, I ordered the bean enchiladas that was covered in a mild green sauce with cheese. This dish was so good that I was craving for it the next day. The cheese is very light tasting and the beans were flavourful. My kids ordered the steak tacos and ate all of it! - which they normally never finish their dishes. We will be back! read more

People are crazy, this place is good. I'll tell you what, I like it better than Grand Azteca, Camelias, or Juan's Hacienda. I still like Mi Pueblo in Mexicantown the best but this is a great option when we don't want to drive down there. The chips aren't my fave, I like thinner ones, but their salsas were fresh and flavorful. My husband got the chimichangas dinner and I got the enchiladas Rojas. We each got them with a mix of beef and chicken. Our beef wasn't greasy and our chicken was flavorful. His chimis came with a large dollop of guac on top and were drizzled with sour cream. The accompaniments of refried beans and rice were alright. The rice was bland but I feel like it is at most Mexican restaurants. I liked the beans. They had a bit more substance than the runny ones you usually receive. We weren't in the mood to drink but they have a lot of options for you. A long list of margaritas plus many draft and bottled/canned beers to choose from. They didn't have any drink specials yet but both traditional and late-night happy hours would get us to come back. I think this is a great addition to the Clawson restaurant scene and worth a visit! read more

I have lived in California for quite a few years and I have had a good experience of Mexican food. I had my worst Mexican food in this restaurant. Apart from the slow service, the things that irritates me the most are as follows: 1. All the four entrees we ordered didn't have any salt in them. The chef does not use salt as an ingredient, it seems/ 2. The food was cold. 3. A-La-Mexicana was didn't have any hint of spicy flavor as promised in the menu. 4. They ran out of olives and mushrooms and couldn't serve the enchiladas as per the description in the menu. 5. They didn't have room temperature water. read more
