Walked past this cool place a dozen times and only got the nerve to try it out when a friend on a work visa from europe said they haven't had fish and chips since they came to Aus in April... what the?! Haha Reviews were good & friend's that have been here highly recommend it :D. Restaurant/takeaway shop is super cosy and tucked away in Surry hills on a Corner :). Has about 4 tables plus a few seats at the counter, so if you wanted to sit down its smart to book but also not a bad idea to come in and ask for a table, leave your contact details and then chill out in the pub next door which i saw one couple do while we were feasting :D Friend got a rocket salad & i got the steamed mussels for starters :), salad was so good but the steamed mussels were lacking... was a bowl with heaps of shells half with meat and half or less without.. the broth on the bottom wasn't so tasty either.. I never see Fish pie on a seafood menu ever .. so that was me for main and my friend had the fish cakes :). Fish cakes looked like beef patties literally but once you taste you realise that it's a qaulity delicious fish cake, never had a quality one before haha :)!! WOW for the fish pie :D, was unsure about the taste but it blew me away on first spoonful :)!! Cheesy mashed potato on top with soft tender fish & mushroom on the bottom :D!! I'm a big eater but the fish pie & a few of the fish cakes filled me up.. bit down about it cuase the dessert looked so good :)!! We must have been going to this place for over 10 years, but this is the first time I've had a chance to to Mohr in about months. While the fish available changes daily, the menu as a whole hasn't really changed in the last decade- and that's not a bad thing. Sooo there's a menu, but basically what you do is you pick: 1. A Fish 2. A Sauce/Topping (eg. hollandaise and asparagus or avocado salsa or cajun crust) 3.A Potato (eg. chips or gratin or wedges or gnocchi) and order that. 90% of the time I get the tuna, with avocado salsa and chips) There is very limited seating, but the turnover is quick and high. Just give your name or number when you arrive and pop over the Shakespeare Hotel for a drink. They'll come drag you out or phone you when your table is ready (normally about 1 drink's wait). P.S. the tartar is tangingly perfect. P.P.S the chairs are all stools, so don't wear a short skirt P.P.P.S if you like your tuna pink, as for RARE not medium rare. read more

Dainty little corner fish and chip store on Devonshire Street Surry Hills. I have been here a few times when craving some seafood and the Sydney Fish Market isn't an option. They make everything to order here and the servings are quite generous. I've had the grilled fish with salad and also the deep fried beer battered seafood and each has been excellent. They do a great avocado salad with your choice of fish as well. There aren't many seats here but you can always take out and find a park around Surry Hills to enjoy your meal. read more

More fish! That's what I find myself chanting after a batch of one of my favorite meals: fish and chips. At Mohr's, I found myself wholly satisfied with my fish and chips, despite the portions being a bit smaller at other restaurants. Coated in a light batter, the fish is fried to crispy golden perfect. Even though the fish was tender and juicy, my only complaint was that it was a bit on the salty side and over seasoned. I am not sure if this was a one-time occurrence, but next time I go I will request that no salt be added to my food. Of course, there is more to be eaten here than just good ole fish and chips. There are also other items like fried prawns, fish cakes, dumplings, and salads. One of the impressive things about this place is that they usually have a variety of fish available; not just white flakey fish like flathead and snapper, but also trout, salmon, oysters, and octopus. I love fish and chips. To me, the preferred place to enjoy fish and chips is outdoors with the sea in full view. So, trying Mohr was a departure from the norm as this place is more inner city than seaside. it is well situated though, directly opposite the well known Shakespeare pub on Devonshire road. I have no doubt that a large portion of its business comes from patrons of the shakespeare. What better feed than fish and chips after a couple of pints? i do believe too, that they allow you to bring in your beer or wine while you enjoy your food. A definite bonus. So, how was it? Well, I ordered the standard basic combo. Good value at around 10 bucks.I was interested in eating in, but was told that it would be more expensive so decided to venture to the nearby park to tuck in. I'd actually been told by 2 non connected people that their fish was very good, so I was looking forward to this. And it was good. Succulent, tasty and the chips done just the way i like. portion size was on the small side though and I wasn't completely satisfied, so will definitely order something to go with it next time. after that experience, I'll certainly be back to eat in and try one of their other seafood dishes. read more

I bought a Groupon voucher for Mohr Fish on Crown Street just three weeks ago - when I wanted to make a reservation through the booking tool on the Groupon website, allegedly no dates were available until November 2020 (!) and the phone number of the restaurant was disconnected. The staff of the Surry Hills branch casually stated that, yeah, the Crown Street branch had been shut down for good last week and the voucher cannot be used in the remaining restaurant - as if they did not belong together. There's nothing that can be done, maybe Groupon will refund my money, goodbye. On a side note - they still continue to sell their Crown Street branch vouchers on Groupon and deliberately defraud customers who might not get their money back. Absolutely disgraceful, keep away from this place! read more

Fish and chips craving? I'm going to Mohr's. Sure, Doyle's is great and everything but this is close to the city and situated right next to the Shakespeare Hotel. This little establishment caught my eye one day as I was walking down the street. It looked like it was a bit out of place (in a groovy way), like it belonged near the seaside (along the sea shore where Sally was selling some sea shells...). So here is the thing! I am going to set the tone for my review of MohrFish like this .... every time we go to MohrFish, we look at each other in frustrated sighs of "why do we leave it so long between visits". We love this place .... and do not come here enough. So on this visit, we were heading out to a 30th birthday party (we are in our mid to late 40s) and wanted to eat prior. So we grabbed a bottle of white (because MohrFish is BYO) and hightailed it there. There are only about four three seated high tables at MohrFish and a couple of chairs at the bar, so you can image this place is small (as in ex-butcher shop small) and really intimate ... and this is just perfect. The space is bright, which is great. But, sadly on this evening (a Saturday) there was no music ... and this was somewhat 'un-comforting'. We couldn't talk at a reasonable level, neither could other tables, and all we could hear was the kitchen, and there was not much noise from there as well. BUT ... the food was sensational, fresh and tasty and a generous in size. We only ordered mains, which was a mistake on our behalf. We should have got two bottles of wine and went the three courses .... next time (soon). MohrFish also does take away, but I would much prefer to eat in. The best table in my mind, is the one in the right hand corner when you enter as no one walked past (only staff). I like this place so much, I have come up with three reasons (and three guest) to go back - just need to set dates in. read more

Really cozy fish restaurant. Service was incredible! Food is superb and fresh! My family came for family vacation and found this place at Yelp. We ordered Oyster, Monk fish, fish & chips, and garlic prawns. My parents are super big and picky with raw oysters and this place brought them back to their childhood! Really great! Had been wanting to try this place for over a year. Really great food efficient service and surprisingly licensed with BYO option :) We had the garlic prawns to start and I had the snapper and my dining companion had the barramundi. Everyone was extremely happy! The fish was fresh the accompaniments were awesome in both dishes. The sneaky bowl of chips went down a treat :) Check out Mohr! Mhor Fish was a butcher's shop in a past life which explains the ceiling to floor white tiles and stainless steel counter, but a bit of history just adds to its character. Perch yourself at a high table in this charming seafood restaurant with a BYO beer or bottle of white and be prepared to have a hard time choosing what to eat. This place is much more than beer battered fish and chips, which is sort of unexpected given the setting. My tip is the Fish Pie ($24) which is topped with mashed potato and served with a side salad - it is delicious. Mhor is usually packed so if you do have to wait you can pop into the pub across the ally for a drink. Otherwise they do takeaway so you can get it to go. read more

Mohr Fish is a similar set-up - choose your market fresh fish of the day, and pair it with one of a selection of scrumptious side dishes for a pretty decent price. This shop, however, is considerable smaller - it only seats some fifteen guests - with a blue tiled exterior, white tiles covering the inside walls and timber bar stools that together recall bygone fish 'n' chip shops. Taking a seat at the central bar, we were immediately offered a basket of crusty white bread with a little dish of butter. I went for a grilled fillet of salmon with roast vegetables and green salad, while my friend had snapper with the biggest pile of mashed potato I've ever seen. Our mains were about $25 each, which might seem hefty given the bustling, takeaway shop ambience, but the serving sizes were more than enough for one person to finish. read more

Menu said fish was grilled, by which they meant a diner grill, it was actually fried in oil. Would have been coated with flour as well, but I told them I'm gluten free. And in the end my monkfish was badly overcooked. I had to use a knife to cut it. Even if it was chicken it would be considered tough. I told the cook, and he said "thank you"?! This place is small, but it's got one huge reputation. So much so, in fact, that most times you'll have to wait for a table (which is fine by me when it means sinking a few beers at the Shakey Hotel next door). Alternatively, get them to wrap it up for you and take it on home, they seem to shoot out the takeaway meals at lightning speed. Mohr Fish is low-key, fast and delicious - and 10,000 times better than your local fish 'n' chip shop. The interior is tiny and a bit too brightly lit for any lingering, but you can pop in after work and know you're guaranteed to have a great mid-week feed. They do excellent fish and chip combos for pretty good prices, which includes an awesome home-made tartare. They always have a great range of fish on offer and I've enjoyed every meal so far. The fish pie is also excellent and definitely worth a try. It's not quite beachside, but it's certainly fresh and it's goood. read more

partner & I have been going on & off to Mohr Fish for over 15 years mixed results generally ok sometimes very good if the cook & fish freshness are right, lately new front of house/waitress since about end November `18 is trying very hard & lovelly person but seems out of her depth communication can be bit of a problem between kitchen & her , hard to get a wine re fill or her attention which isnt good for business if you want to sell more wine, bit hit or miss with the fish the grilled flathead fillets can be rubbery as some other varieties may have been frozen? I`m supprised the owner dosnt take more interest I know the light rail work has had significant impact as its often very quiet will still support but they need a shake up asap Ross read more
