Went here for an anniversary dinner. Haven't Been here in a few years and thought we would give it a shot since the website looks great. Service was slow, entrees overpriced for wha you get and the steak selections are on Pat Lafreida which is just a marketing scheme and overpriced price of beef. This is a great place for atmosphere, food and drinks. (The interior reminded me of the wonderful Mohonk Mountain House near New Paltz.) Our waiter, Giuseppe, was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The food was exceptional. My wife and I started with a corn soup, which was more like a creamy bisque - delicious! My wife followed up with a great lobster ravioli and I with a filet mignon cooked perfectly. These dishes were a little pricey but well worth it. Have never had anything other than an excellent experience here. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. There is always a fire burning and it feels so cozy in the winter. You can also sit outside in nice weather. There is a beautiful view and you can watch pizzas being made in a wood burning pizza oven too. There is an excellent selection of craft beers and yummy cocktails. They use farm to table ingredients and even tell you where everything is sourced. They have an amazing cheese selection as well and would highly recommend you try a few! The service is very professional and on point. We stumbled on this place while driving around the area. The restaurant is beautiful, inside and out, and the menu is interesting and fresh. The sign out side said it was a Farm to Table restaurant, which was encouraging since I have a gluten allergy and chain restaurants often aren't knowledgable about gluten free foods. I can only give three stars because the service was really slow (it took a long time to get waited on and the food took over an hour to arrive). When we were finally served my burger was raw. I don't ever send food back but I couldn't even attempt to eat it. I didn't want another one because I didn't have another hour to wait. They did take the charge off of my check, but instead of apologizing the waitress explained that the burger was made with pork and bacon so it only LOOKED raw and was really only slightly undercooked. I like rare burgers - this was almost still moving. Anyway, I will try again someday. I'd like to think I just hit them on an off day. read more

Staple in the Lake Mohawk/Sparta area. It's a little bit more on the pricy side but for a reason. Everything is quality and both the drink and food menu rotate. I've been here several times and I've never really been disappointed. I've been to the bar with a friend for a drink at night, I've been there for dinner and large groups, and even bridal showers. They have a good atmosphere and pretty quick service. Their waiters and bartenders are friendly. The music as night is usually pretty good I've never not enjoyed it. It's not my favorite spot in the world but I've never had a problem and I'm not one to complain. I'm easily impressed as I work in the food industry but also pretty easy to critic. Food comes out in a decent time. Drinks are quick. Waiters are sociable and nice. Bartenders are usually as well. Overall I always enjoy my experiences and I'll be back the next time someone suggests drinks or dinner here. read more

Walked in at 7:30 on Father's Day to have a quick bite and a drink. Said we were going to the bar and two women at the host stand said " bar is closed!" We laughed and walked out because this is maybe the 3rd or 4th chance we have given this place. Food has always been good, but service, ambiance, and consistency have always failed. My wife and I went to the Mohawk House to celebrate her birthday. It was our first time there -- and it was definitely not worth the hype. For starters, the waiter offered specials, one of which my wife ordered. Five minutes later he returned and told her "they were out of it." It was 6:00 pm -- peak dinner period ... so how do you offer a special you don't have??? He then offered to give her the same sides with a dish she ordered from the regular menu. When dinner arrived, the promised sides were missing. When we voiced our displeasure, he grudgingly brought a side of asparagus. To make matters worse, when I made the reservation I told the woman that it was my wife's birthday. To her credit, she reserved us a table with a beautiful view. When we arrived, the hostess reminded the person who seated us that it was my wife's birthday. During dinner, the person next to us got a complimentary dessert for his birthday, showing that their waiter was on top of the situation. My wife got nothing. (In a really good restaurant, you shouldn't have to remind anyone or ask for a complimentary dessert.) Lastly, the food was good, but not worth what they charge. Based on our experience, I wouldn't recommend The Mohawk House to anyone. Overrated and extremely disappointing. read more

I'm not sure what the hype is about this place. It's an overpriced restaurant with not the best tasting dishes. There are not many choices on the menu to begin with...Between my husband and I, we had the pork chop and chicken breast. Both were bland I have to say. We ordered an off the menu fried calamari for an appetizer and that also could have used improvement. The service is great as well as the drinks. All in all, I wouldn't recommend the place but glad we checked it out. read more

Note: this review is for the bar only. The Mohawk House could easily be a 4, or even 5 star venue. However, my trip there yesterday had me leaving with a pretty negative view of the place. The beer selection is one of the best I've seen in all of NJ--they have an incredible selection, and a bunch of rare beers, too. The prices are NYC-expensive, which is even more off-putting considering I'm visiting from a state (WI) where we can get amazing beer for $4. That's besides the point. There were 4 bartenders there yesterday. The guy was great, friendly, and knew all of his stuff...the one time we talked to him. Unfortunately, our bartender who served us was the oblivious, cold woman who had no people skills whatsoever. I understand that bartenders put up with drunk morons all the time, but I was there to have a single beer--and to enjoy the atmosphere. This woman barely paid attention to us, took at least 5 minutes to even give us a beer menu, and then had a negative attitude for the duration of my time there. I don't usually bitch about things like this, but I'm in your establishment, drinking your alcohol, and I'm planning on giving you a tip. Had the guy been serving us, he would've gotten an awesome tip...but the woman who apparently spends more time shopping in Ed Hardy stores than being even semi-cordial to customers? I think not. I'll go back to the Mohawk house again, but I'll do everything in my power to avoid that nasty, nasty bartender. She shouldn't be serving people, period. read more

I think to not take advantage of the many things the Mohawk House has to offer is a mistake. It is truly a multi faceted destination It can meet the needs of virtually any patron from the millennial to a senior citizen. We have had a private party here, attended wine dinners, beer dinners, happy hours, and eaten in the main dining room. The service is always excellent, beer wine and cocktail selection varied and creative, food always well prepared thoughtful and interesting. This restaurant has convinced me that people in general do not know good food (I read the Yelp reviews before I went) or, I got the backup kitchen staff to cook for my group tonight. Paying these prices for average small portions is an insult. This place is beautiful, the menu is written so well with great selections and the service was great , but I was SO DISAPPOINTED in the food. When I dine out the food is the most important part. We had 3 Appetizers and 5 entrees and shared within our group. No one was happy. We went elsewhere for dessert after our Sub-ordinary meal. I could write in detail all the negatives but won't waste your time. Save your hard earned money and go somewhere else, unless food quality is not important to you. Had lunch for four today. We requested a table to talk as we didn't want to disturb other diners. We lingered and weren't rushed at all. Waiter was knowledgeable and attentive and not pushy. Food was very good as usual. Had mushroom soup and special cauliflower bisque. We all had filet mignon and requested sandwich to be open faced and au jus on the side. Both were accommodated. Overpriced!! My spouse and I are foodies and go to many high end establishments. We came here and the building is nice, which is what you are paying for. We sat outside on the patio . The tables were weathered so we asked our server for a tablecloth. That small change made it feel like an upscale restaurant and not just a pizza joint. We had the crab cake and calamari; both were unassuming. We had a steak and chicken dish which were good but didn't stand out in my mind to make me want to go back. We have had a better for alot less. The steak was alone on the plate and adding a baked potato or salad for the price would have been nice. I think what really shocked us was $14 for majority of the desserts. This is not Manhattan! We went against our judgment and ordered a chocolate oreo cake and an apple tart. The "cake" was in a small Mason jar and the tart looked like it was made in the lid because it was so small. Absolute rip off! We won't be back read more

To cut to the chase, while the restaurant was charming and the service efficient and friendly we had some major issues with the food. First, we ordered a dozen clams on the half shell and by the time they arrived they were swamped in melt water from the ice they were sitting on far too long. These claims did not look freshly shucked. When we complained about this it was apparent the same clams just came back drained of water and all the liquor was gone. The clams were also advertised as middle neck clams, but they were even small for little necks. Second, they had a 2 and 1/2 pound lobster special for $52. it written on the special board just like that. We were expecting a full 2.5 lobster. But instead just the tail and the claws were presented on the plate. No body, no legs NOTHING. In a 2.5 lb lobster you can get a lot of meat from the body and other parts. We suspect that is the lobster meat that they were using for their other lobster specials that night. To me that is terribly misleading and frankly money grubbing. My wife is a CIA graduate who shucks her own clams and can break down a lobster with the best of them so the observations above are from an expert. The lobster cocktail I had was okay. It was just the rubbery meat of one claw. That being said, the porterhouse steak I had was good and they had good artisanal cheese. The other diners enjoyed their Chilean sea bass but were not wowed. Also the beer selection IS excellent and they do make good cocktails. It was an incredibly expensive meal where the kitchen really did some inexcusable things. If it wasn't for the charming setting and the service I would have given this restaurant one star. I will not return. read more

I have eaten at the Mohawk House 6 times but always forget to yelp about it.First off,its pricey,so be forewarned.@$300.00 for a family of three including a few drinks and tip.They had a $49.00 steak on the menu tonight which is kind of rediculous for Sussex County. Our server was Julie for the second time.Her service has always been 5 stars along with the rest of the staff.Waters are refilled and dishes cleaned in a timely manner. Another negative,besides the prices,the main dining room is always freakin freezing so be prepared to keep your jacket on if you sit by the main doors.We asked our server to raise the heat,but it didnt do much.If you are cold blooded like me,keep to the middle of the dining room or be prepared to keep your jacket on. The parking lot is also a disaster.They have valet parking,but alot of the bar patrons choose to park on the main road or the side of the driveway.Its no problem early on,but once it gets busy,its tricky to get out.I would eliminate the valet,or make it mandatory for all patrons. With all this negativity,I still think this is one of the best restaurants in the area.The menu is always interesting and the food well prepared.I have had the lobster thermidor which is served in a baked pumpkin and was delicious.Tonight I had the short rib special which was very good. As an appetizer I had their sushi,which was better than most of the sushi joints around here. In closing,there are a few annoyances that detract from this place being 5 stars,but it still is worth the trip. read more

This has always been a favorite of ours since given the suggestion by a friend 3 years ago. The beer selection is always stellar, but they tend to run dry during the busy nights (v-day) since they buy in small quantities to maintain freshness (first world problem). We had the lobster pot pie and the pork chop dinner, both of which were packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. It is also great to see the support they give towards local farms and purveyors. Do yourself a favor and pick another place to eat. The food is only average, and the prices are outrageous - $ 39 for a piece of salmon. Without dessert, and only one drink, you'll spend $ 60 per person, and the food is definitely not worth the price. You'll find the same quality food (better, in some cases) at Friday's for half the price. Eat somewhere else, and keep the money in the bank. read more

I've been here many times. The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is homey and comfortable. In the winter they keep the fireplace on which adds nice ambiance. There are not many dining options in Sparta that can stack up to the Mohawk House on quality. Most recently when I came I had the lobster bisque. It was very good and creamy. There weren't many lobster pieces in it though. For my main course I shared the short ribs with my sister. The whole meal was more than enough food for us. The kitchen was thoughtful enough to separate the entree into two smaller portions which was nice. Their menu also rotates seasonally. I've never had a bad meal here. read more

Well, i had to drop my rating to 3stars. Our waitress was excellent and the place was really nice....but the food just didn't match the level of our last meal. We each had a steak, the special bone in filet mignon and the cowboy. We had a issue with the cook temp of the filet which was fixed immediately but they brought out a smaller one? . My cowboy steak had a nice taste but it was thin and very tough...Honestly it was not steak house quality at all. But after having the other meal replaced I didn't have the heart to complain about mine. The broccoli raab was undercooked so it was incredibly bitter and the smashed Yukon's were just too dry. It took many pats of butter to kinda fix it, ...our cappuccinos looked amazing and the frothing was just so appetizing but..the coffee was cold, again, we didn't have the heart to send it back as the waitress was so nice and really took pride in the presentation ...she gave us a free desert due to the steak issue... we were told by friends the the food can be inconsistent and they were right. And the meal was not cheap, not that we expected it to be, but unless you complained about it all at one time, you would be there all night trying to replace your food. Now I know why folks try a bit of everything on their plate before they get into the dinner, so if there is a problem u can send the whole shabang back at one. It's a timing thing to actually enjoy a a meal you send back to be fixed. If you Waite too long u lose your appetite or get tired of sitting through a marathon of watching other diners enjoy their dinner as you eat your rolls and butter and drink your 7th martini. Will I go back,.....we will. I think we will stick to the seafood towers or something that can be consistently good. The beers on tap are second to none! I went to mohawk house last night and made it a point to remember to write them a review today. I had to go for a birthday party and was a little skeptical because of all the negative reviews. I have to say that I was blown away by the service, the food and the beer list. I have no idea why they have such a low rating. The menu had 34 unique beers on tap- I had the green flash which was great if you like hops. For an appetizer I split the raw bar for two and the tuna tartar, both very good. As an entree I had the pork chop which was a bigger portion than I expected. Most of the others around me had the filet mignon and raved about it. The portions are a little small for the price but that's typical how it is if you go to a really good restaurant. 5 stars for the service, hands down. read more

Went for a friend's wedding reception. The food was great and the waiters and waitresses had the beer COMING. The inside decor looks like a cozy lodge but the view out back is great..looks down on a huge open field. This place is awesome looking between the high vaulted ceilings, exposed wood beams it fits right into a "rustic" category which I thoroughly enjoy. They have a large outdoor patio with many fire pits, a covered terrace and two bocce ball courts. I came here during the day on a weekend for a drink and wanted something different besides the beer they had on-tap. I ordered a Moscow Mule... The bartender offered me many different styles they offered in her sassy attitude of a voice. I ordered just the regular one as I'm sure it was going to be pricey to begin with. She said they make it real official.. but then goes ahead and serves it in a large beer glass. Not real official to me. The glass was packed with ice.. I was lucky to get four sips through a straw before the glass was just left with ice. When the bill came it was $8.00... $8.00 for a glass of ice and four sips.. that is crazy, insane, unjustified. I might as well have been charged just to walk in the place. I can't imagine what a night of drinking would cost here just to get a decent buzz going. OOO and the parking attendants. I had to move a sign to back out of my spot that tell you to stop there for the valets. Well when I was waiting to back up because of other traffic in the lot, the attendant rudely grabbed the sign and put it back in my way. Not very nice sir. Maybe he was mad that he didn't park my car for me? Well maybe he should have showed up to work on-site and he could have. I'm sure this place in the go-to place on a hopping Saturday evening but make sure you bring an unlimited credit card. P.S: Don't plan to use the bathroom as I have no idea how the Town let them get away with so few stalls for such a large place. read more

We went to Mohawk House this past Saturday for the first time. Everything was terrific, which I don't say lightly. Valet parking was not a problem. Table was waiting. We enjoyed an excellent Dinner - Caesar Salad, Filet Mignon for my wife and Shrimp Cocktail and Chilean Sea Bass for myself, with a nice choice of wines. Dessert was the only downside, as mine was unexciting (an old fashioned parfait tasted like whipped cream with berries). But the service was top notch. We'll be back. read more

I have yet to eat at the bar, only the restaurant, but must say that I was pleased with 2 out of 4 things. Service, Food quality, and presentation were all excellent. My wife and I took my parents there on a whim not expecting much, and were pleasantly surprised with the quality of food that came out, however I feel the prices (especially for Sussex County) were a bit over the top. Once our food had arrived, our waiter kind of forgot about us, and it's not like the dining room was over crowded, but while he was taking our orders he was very helpful. I think if I do go back, I'd go to the bar side, where it seems the prices are far more reasonable. read more

I have now been to two baby showers at the Mohawk house, and have been extremely pleased each time. The staff is very attentive, gives you extra time if you need it, and are polite and professional.
