Gondola tram lift and views on top is a top top "tops" attraction - hard to top - on our stay!…read more Eye popping, jaw dropping, incredible stellar views of Wallowa lake and mountains on the lift that starts at 3,700 feet and travels steep up the mountain, through pine trees, about 15 minutes and about a mile, to 8,000 feet elevation at the top Mt Howard. Off the Gondola, walk 3 miles to all camera and binocular ready view lookouts of mountains in all directions and lake below. Lush green vegetation and scents of alpine high. See a parsley - only one of its kind in the world. Watch out for chipmunks - really too friendly - one hopped on my shoe - the little bugger looked up with craving eyes for a handout. If you're thinking about it - it does cost 50 bucks - and worth every dollar. The pictures in your photo album will be mind blowing memories for a Wallowa lifetime.

I'm not afraid of height but found this part kind of exciting. There was still a fair amount of snow, and some mud at the top which limited our ability to hike all around but we did make it to the Royal Purple viewpoint and the overlook east of it. The views were amazing! I didn't realize until I went to make this post that I didn't take many pictures once up there - I was just so captivated by the beauty of the experience.

Apple Maps* doesn't actually take you to the right spot (see my maps screen shot). I think Google maps is more accurate. Just keep following the road signs and you'll find it though! Amazing views and definitely worth the drive. There's public bathrooms (don't expect too much) and plenty of parking. There's only two, but we found an open picnic table and hung around with some wine for about an hour. No garbage cans so be prepared to take back what you bring with you. I would recommend taking snacks to picnic and make the most of it since the drive is long and windy.

There are a couple of ways to experience Hells Canyon - you can drive down the canyon itself, take a boat tour past the dam (where the road ends), or you can head up into the Wallowas and score some spectacular views from up top. This is that up-top spot. To get to the overlook be ready to go deep up the National Forest Service roads. Mostly gravel. Take NF 39 off of State Route 86, and then turn up NF 490. This will take you close to the wilderness area and into gorgeous mountains studded with stands of evergreens, alpine meadows, and, at the right time of year, tons of wildflowers. The Wallowas are considered one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon... but that's a story for another review. This overlook is fairly primitive but has everything you need to take in the 270-degree panoramas from this vantage. Picnic tables, toilets, a parking area, and a small trail out to where you get the best views out over Hells Canyon. While the views from up here are expansive, they don't really do the canyon justice. It's hard to see deep down into the canyon from here. But that said, the views are still great. We visited in late June on a hot, early-summer year, so the wildflowers were in full effect at this location. Tons of delicate alpine flowers. So pretty! The interpretive signs give you some good info on the geography of the area as well as info on the local wolf population. So cool to be in the area where these endangered animals still roam. Coming from Portland, I hear about the gray wolves from time to time on NPR. It's great to be out where they actually might pass by every once in a while. It's a strong punctuation on the remoteness of the location. After soaking in views and catching a picnic here, you can continue on NF 490 to complete a loop down the NW side of the Wallowas into Wallowa lake and Joseph, a path we followed, which offers a ton of great gravel-road driving. Insane alpine views, sweet untouched air, and deep green solitude. I highly recommend taking this byway. A much more interesting way to get from nowhere to nowhere. The road less traveled.

We were lucky to have been paired up with Jose who drove us from one to the next on a perfectly selected bunch of wineries that were all different and equally as fantastic. Our group is no quiet bunch that has a good time, so Jose was fun and fit right in. He is from the area and gave good insight on other wineries to check out after our tour was over, restaurants and eateries in the area, local hot spots...when in doubt ask Jose. Before we set off on the grand tour, he greeted us promptly with two bottles of wine that we saved for later. There were 7 of us and we all were comfortable in the van that was provided. For our day out, we made several stops that included: Walla Walla Vintners - The vineyard and landscape is cozy and very comfortable. We were the only group there and got a really great conversation going about their wines and about a couple of other places to try out. The interior is beautiful with stained barn doors and paneled windows. For the wines...don't be afraid to go back and forth. I did a taste test without knowing which wine was which and wound up enjoying a wine that was completely unexpected. I loved that this was encouraged. They want you to drink what is perfect for your palette. Tranche - This is a very modern winery with beautiful art scattered around. Had it been a warmer day and the back doors opened into a courtyard overlooking the vines it would be have been perfect. They have a variety of lighter bodied wines, so if you're looking for a blush. Alluve - Interesting backstory of the couple who served in the Air Force, it's a very small tasting room at the top of their Italian themed villa. The landscaping was beautiful, but the story on the property is well worth a listen to. Amavi - Two words. Vintage Chevy. Be prepared to pay upfront for your wine tasting here and be given a token to be used when you purchase wine later. The winery itself is very spacious and offers gorgeous views. We had a personal tasting with the owner who walked us through their wines as well as the history of the winery and he offered to take a picture of us in an old vintage Chevrolet truck on the property. We took full advantage and absolutely wanted Jose to be part of that picture because he had been such a great guide for the entire day. Castillo de Feliciana Vineyard and Winery - This winery, and the experience of it is why we are thankful for Freddy G's service. We made this our last stop (that's a lot of wine tasting!) and it was the best recommendation on the fly. We turned to Jose and asked about a winery with bubbles and he was immediate in responding. His knowledge of the wineries, and his personal taste came right into play and it was outstanding. The winery is basically a Spanish villa and utterly adorable. There was only one person working and she was busy, but don't let that discourage, she was well aware of who was coming and going and did not forget anyone during their tasting. Because there's some driving involved getting from one place to the next, we bypassed wasting any time for ourselves and took up a great recommendation from Jose and from one of the wineries had him pick up some lunch for us from a delicious lunch spot called Graze. Yum, the food hit the spot and held us over until we parked it on the next tasting. Working with Freddy to get the logistics prepared for the wineries and then having Jose made for a great first time outing in Walla Walla. We had great communication and it was a smooth and easy process and the overall service provided was above and beyond. I highly recommend as wine tasting can be daunting in a very spread out region, this took the stress out of trying to figure out what winery to go to when there's well over 160 to choose from. Thank you for a memorable trip!

The walk down Main Street called out landmarks, both the ones of usual history and the long tradition of madams and prostitution in Walla Walla. The architecture is fabulous. The luncheon in the Kirkman House included a docent dressed as Mr. Kirkman. Learning that Walla Walla was the center of a county that included all of Idaho, part of Montana and two thirds of Washington just after Oregon became a state made clear that Walla Walla was special. Back on Main Street, we made stops at the Walla Walla Bread Co and Wingman Birdz and Brews. Then down a side street to the Colville Street Patisserie for gelato. We finished with a casual wine tasting at Henry Earl Estates tasting room. The group size is kept to 10 or less. The banter is fun. The best part of the tour were our guides who made it all come together.
