My favorite ramen place! I get the tonkotsu ramen with extra mushrooms and no seaweed every single time because it is amazing. They have lots of seating and it's well decorated. Tasty Ramen! I hadn't been in a few years and glad I went back. I loved all the options such a great selection from curry, matcha, lemon to more traditional like miso, soy and pork. I just so happened to stumble upon this restraint while visiting Jacksonville and going to the shopping plaza where Modu is located. I love Ramen and decided to give it a chance , that was the best decision I made during my trip to Jacksonville! Their menu had alot of options for a different types of diners. I opted for the Curry Ramen and the strawberry sake! The Ramen was flavorful and amazing. The portion was decent and filling. It was lunch time and there was about a 15 min wait to be seated which wasn't bad . The server greeted me quickly and my order only took about 20 mins to come out. One of my favorite places for authentic ramen! Every time I've been here, the food has been consistent! My husband has been to the epicenter of ramen, which is Japan and out of all the places here in Jacksonville, he says this by far is the closest to the real deal. They now have added more ramen options like the kimchi shoyu (soy sauce based broth) and kimchi miso ramen and also the matcha ramen in both forms! You would think matcha doesn't go well as a broth but think again! My husband and our friend tried the matcha ramen made with ceremonial grade matcha powder with matcha infused noodles (yes, the noodles are green!) and they absolutely loved it! The matcha gives the broth a light, creamy, and enjoyable taste. It may not be for everyone though but I do suggest you give it a try if you're a matcha lover! I had the kimchi shoyu ramen with a an extra spicy level! Now most places when I say "extra spicy" doesn't mean extra spicy and I usually ask for extra spicy sauce or chili oil. However, this places does it right! I enjoyed my super spicy ramen! The star of the ramen is definitely the braised pork. Oh my goodness, it just melts in your mouth with a perfect amount of saltiness and umami flavor. The kimchi, mushrooms, scallions, naruto (fish cake), corn (I added this), created such a wonderful, aromatic, and delicious taste of flavors that danced off my taste buds so effortlessly. They also cook their soft boiled eggs correctly! I'm always impressed by that because I've been to a lot of ramen places where the egg is overcooked. We also had the wing flight of rice, daikon radishes, half honey glazed and half spicy wings. The spicy wings is more of a spicy-sweet flavor but it was wonderful. The wings were extra crispy and paired well with the rice. The sauces on the rice were so good that I ended up finishing all the rice! Overall, if you're looking for an authentic, cozy, warm, and friendly ramen experience, check Modu out! You won't be disappointed! The customer service is outstanding as well! Our waitress was such a sweetheart! The ambiance was super cozy the day we went. It was raining and the sound of the rain with a hot bowl of ramen in a cute, small shop takes me back to my childhood. I really wanted to like this place. Maybe it was just a really busy night last night and they were not operating like they normally do per other stellar reviews. The restaurant itself is quite cozy, but the entire serve staff was running around like something had gone horribly wrong. We walked in and the guy at the front was confused about if he had called us from the wait list and we said no we just walked in. The owner was very nice and told us to write our names down and sit in the waiting area. It wasn't long before we were seated, but then it took probably another 5-10 minutes before anyone came by our table to give us menus or water. Our server didn't even tell us his name and just haphazardly gave us a menu. Then another person came by and asked if we had been helped yet, which at that point, we had already ordered the mango bingsoo which is all we wanted. We were surprised to find that it was $16. That is incredibly expensive, but maybe it's because it's the only place in Jax that has it as opposed to other cities that have a bigger Asian presence. It was a pretty small portion for how much it cost compared to other places where I've had bingsoo. We also felt like there was a mix between frozen and fresh mango in there, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It was just interesting and apparent. However it was a decent size for 2 people to split. The bingsoo was just ok -- not like crazy good or anything, but I've had bingsoo before since I'm Korean. We then waited for our server to come by for quite some time to ask if we wanted the check or needed more water, and then when he didn't (he was "in training," per the owner), we asked for it from another completely different person than our server. That person then, somewhat haphazardly, placed it on our table before moving onto the next thing he was doing. Overall, it was a disappointing and chaotic experience that was then topped off with us walking out with no one acknowledging that we were leaving or thanking us for stopping by. We left rather surprised at the whole situation. Probably won't be back! read more

Another ramen we tried was the Tonkatsu Curry, I believe, which used to be on the hidden menu but now it's on the menu when you go for lunch. That was fantastic. This was my dad's first ramen experience and he is HOOKED! The service for lunch was amazing. Came here because of a TikTok post my boyfriend showed me and I have had it bookmarked here on Yelp for a while. We both regretted coming here. I wanted to take a picture but it didn't look amazing so I didn't think it would picture well either. But I got medium spicy curry tonkotsu ramen and he got a tonkotsu set. Upon being served, she dropped a piece of my boyfriend's tonkotsu on the table which wasn't cleaned off prior to sitting down after a couple just sat there. He asked for teriyaki because the katsu sauce tasted like applesauce and wasn't a fan. She had the audacity to up-charge for a sauce and my chili oil because my order was not spicy AT ALL despite having dropped his food. I understand up-charging for things but as a server I'd cover that myself if I dropped the food and the spicy food I informed my customer was not spicy at all. At the end of it all, my boyfriend had a really bad stomach ache and we had to run to the gas station across the street to use the bathroom. After getting home, he was still hungry and just assumed the stomach ache was from post gym runs--NOPE. After eating the leftovers, (we don't waste food even though none of it was really great) and he was in the bathroom again. I barely ate any of my tonkotsu and I'm glad since he had the runs from it. Overall would not recommend. The best tasting thing from our entire order was the marinated egg in my ramen and that was overcooked. The marinade tasted great though! I truly don't understand how this place has a high rating and gets the exposure it does. Oh and it was unbelievably expensive for the quality. $44 and some change for our order and despite having leftovers it wasn't worth it. After a very long day at work, I was freezing and wanting something warm for dinner. My husband and I came here at prime dinner time and only had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. Neither of us had much time to eat during the day, so we came hungry! We ordered the kimchi pancakes as an appetizer, and they were so good! They had the same texture as a potato pancake and were excellent with a little bit of soy sauce. For the ramen, I ordered the Tonkotsu with spice added. It was well-flavored and not overly spicy. It was enough to add a kick and some extra flavor, but not so spicy that I couldn't taste the rest of the dish. The black garlic was also heavenly! I'm a garlic lover so this was the perfect way to warm up after a long day outside in the cold. My husband ordered the matcha ramen and also loved it! I tried some of his broth, and the matcha flavor was a lot more subtle than I was expecting. If I come back, I think I'll order the matcha. The service was excellent- our server frequently checked on us and made sure we were enjoying our meal. All in all, this is a solid casual spot for some ramen. Modu is one of the best Japanese-Korean restaurants in Jacksonville. I have eaten here multiple times. They have mostly Japanese dishes, yet they have a couple of Korean dishes. Each time, I order the Tonkotsu ramen because it is AMAZING! It's around the same price as Domu, but offers much more food. Their Bingsu desserts are incredible and mouth-watering. The service is always good, they have kind staff. However, I think that people have caught on to this gem and now it's always packed!! I love that they're getting so much business, but it definitely makes it harder when it's so packed. If you want to go, definitely plan to be there on a random weekday for your best shot at open seating. If you want to go on the weekends, show up when it opens because I guarantee within an hour of opening, it will be FULL! read more

My friend and I went and tried MODU today. I have been wanting to try this place out for the longest time so I was very excited! I was so looking forward to it because I have heard many good things from it from my other friends. The place is located on baymeadows in the plaza where the dollar tree and McDonald is. The parking lot is small, but it's not hard to find a parking. The restaurant itself is smaller than expected. There is only one waitress working, so the service is pretty slow. However, the vibe was nice. For starters, we got the pork gyoza, takoyaki, and half spicy/honey wings. For ramen we got the tonkatsu and spicy miso. The pork gyoza was so so. I wasn't a fan of it. Not good, but not bad, it was decent. The spicy wings weren't spicy, but more of a thai chili/sweet and sour flavor to me. The honey wings were ok. The takoyaki, on the other hand was delicious! I have to say hands down the best part of the meal I had. As for the ramen, it looked so good and appetizing, but when I took a bite, I was very dissatisfied and disappointed with the extra spicy miso ramen. You can definitely taste the spice, but that was it. The broth was super bland. I mean you can't even taste anything. It tastes like hot water sprinkled with some spice. No flavor, no umami, nothing. The charsu pork tasted awful, again just unsavory and weak in flavor, or a lack of better words, again bland. The bamboo was ok. The boiled egg was decent. The noodles was alright. But overall, the whole extra spicy miso ramen was just plain, flavorless, dull in flavor, flat, and tasteless. The tonkatsu ramen had a little bit of a flavor, but again not as appetizing when you eat it. Overall, I don't like to say this, but I am not a fan of their food. The wings are alright, the pork gyoza's are decent, and the ramen was just flavorless and unsavory. However, the takoyaki was the only good food! If I were to get anything here again, I would just go gor the takoyaki. Other than that, I don't see myself coming back to this place. read more

Cozy little gem located on Baymeadows. A friend recommended this ramen place and I'm glad I tried it out. Tonkatsu ramen: rich broth with lots of depth and flavors. Pork is crispy and the noodle is soft with mushroom. Curry ramen: I had the spicy one and it was not too spicy, the curry flavor is good, not overly powered other flavors, the mursooms is sweet and delicious, greatly paired with corn and other veggies. Really enjoyed it and the portion is big, I couldn't finish the bowl myself. Kim chi Gyoza: crispy and crunchy with a light touch of Kim chi on the inside. It's a good appetizer! read more

Ok, I'll start by saying this is my 1 must have when I m in Jax. It's that good. The location is sneaky because it's behind a McDonald's but the vibes are spot on if you want to disappear and get AMAZING Ramen. The service is always prompt. The menu is more than two pages but I'll tell you now, get an Asahi or Saporro and start with some kimchi pancakes. They are crispy, salty, oily and spicy just yum. And then get a medium spice tonkotsu ramen. They do different levels of spicy, I like my food spicy like very hot but medium is the perfect level of spice to still enjoy the many layers of flavors. The hot was bearable but I lost some the enjoyment of the depth of their broth. The noodles are great and the serving size is perfect for a hungry person. I have been going here since it was a hole in the wall, and have made it through almost all their ramen offerings. Other honorable mentions: shoyu, Miso, TanTanmen Ramen. I have never been here before, and my neighbor told me about this restaurant, so I figured I would give it a try yesterday. I went here yesterday for dinner and wasn't disappointed. The food here looks great, and most of their dishes are ramen, which I love to eat. I decided to order a Tonkatsu dish. The dish eas very good and flavorful as well. It was a generous portion of pork, and it was fried very well. The atmosphere is very good, because it's conveniently located in the corner of a small shopping center. The ramen came out about 10 minutes later hot and beautifully put together. There was one server but she had the lunch customers well taken care of. The decor inside the restaurant was a bit dark and I didn't think the fake flowers with the tags on them added anything positive to the dark interior.
