Before making reservations I checked Yelp reviews and found opinions quite polarized, a fair number of recent very high and very low scores. Booking reservations online gave me my first caution, when I was advised my table was only mine for 90 minutes, and there was a $40 per person charge for reservations not cancelled 24 hours in advance. Both of these feel extreme. But I was really in the mood for veal, which is hard to find in Asheville. So, onward! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Modesto is in the Grove Arcade, built in 1929. It is a very small trattoria, the tables are very close together, with a well-supplied bar taking up a fair amount of room. The walls are all hard surfaces, the ceiling is not that high, so for a small place it was quite loud[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. There was no host/hostess to greet us when we walked up, but someone arrived shortly to show us to our table. Service ended up being reasonably quick and efficient, but also felt mechanical. Smiles were in short supply. My wife ordered the wood fired romaine salad and SC shrimp scampi, while I ordered the pear and gorgonzola salad and veal marsala. I was intrigued by some of the seafood specials, but I had been craving veal for a while and went with that. The two salads arrived quickly, and were very generously sized. We both thoroughly enjoyed the salads. My wife liked hers so much I joked that she was licking the plate. I had not had pear and gorgonzola salad in maybe 15 years, and mine very good, I think they used almost a whole pear. The only off note was that I considered their choice in gorgonzola to be bland - ideally the sharpness of the cheese should offset the sweetness of the pear, and that tension was missing. The two entrees did not fare so well. My wife found her pasta very bland and flavorless. I tried a fork full, and it definitely needed more salt in the pasta water, and was overcooked and soft, not al dente. My veal was served over saffron risotto and veggies. The veggies were very good. OTOH, there was no saffron flavor in the risotto, and the veal was a complete miss. It was tougher than any steak I've had in recent memory, and had so much cracked black pepper on it (from the kitchen, not tableside add-on) that any veal flavor was completely buried. Overall, a very disappointing meal given that we spent over $150 with only one drink apiece. I doubt we'll be back.

I've lived in Asheville for years. Somehow, I never ate at Modesto. I thought it would be red sauce and spaghetti. I was wrong. We missed lunch and stayed for dinner. That mistake turned out to be luck. I ordered monkfish and scallops with roasted vegetables. It came with a purple cabbage relish, saffron risotto, and a butter-caper sauce on the side. Each bite hit hard. Big flavors. Clean. Bright. Rich. The risotto had rosemary and depth. The butter cut through everything just right. Even the scalloped potatoes, tucked beneath the vegetables, had a crisp edge. Every part was seasoned. No fluff. No filler. Just damn good food. The kind you think about days later. Honestly, for a foodie town, it's rare to find dishes this elevated. So much thought in the flavor. You can taste it. Modesto knows what it's doing.

My friend and I went to Modesto for our Christmas celebration dinner, and everything from start to finish was wonderful. We were greeted immediately by a friendly staff member and taken straight to our table with no wait at all. We decided to skip cocktails and appetizers (even though several sounded amazing), and started with the bread service. The sourdough loaf with seasoned oil was absolutely outstanding -- soft, warm, and honestly some of the best bread I've ever eaten. My friend ordered the Chicken Parmigiana, and I chose the evening special, Herb-Seared Verlasso Salmon. My friend admitted she ate a little too much of that delicious bread to fully enjoy her entrée, but she still said it was very good. My salmon was cooked perfectly, beautifully seasoned, and served over creamy risotto with plenty of fresh vegetables. Every bite was delicious. We finished our meal with the Grand Marnier Crème Brûlée, which was the perfect ending -- smooth, flavorful, with a beautifully caramelized top and a few pomegranate seeds for a bright touch. Highly recommend Modesto. Wonderful service, excellent food, and a truly enjoyable dining experience. You won't be disappointed.

Had lunch here after walking around the Grove Arcade downtown. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat outside which was so pretty.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My husband had the carbonara pasta which was really good. My son had a perfect margarita pizza. Big enough to share. I had a beautiful, fresh salad with grilled shrimp and a lemony dressing. The shrimp were large and perfectly cooked. Service was great. I would go here again.

Celebrating the holidays with our office group at Modesto. The boss was not invited, just his credit card!! Our table of 4 enjoyed calamari for an appetizer; one of the sauces that came with the dish had a wonderful heat/spice. We devoured a few sandwiches: the Muffaletta, and the Modesto Burger. Of course, we had to try a few pasta dishes; the SC Shrimp Scampi and the Bolognese were exactly as you would expect at an Italian fine dining restaurant. Portion sizes for all the dishes were impressive and we left with a few to-go boxes! Local celebrity siting as we were seated. A few tables over, Stu Helm the Asheville Food Fan was also dining at Modesto!!

Hector and Jim were amazing during Hurricane Helene and fed us free of charge when there was no water, cell service, etc. They brought us in off the street and made sure we had food. Nothing was open. It was delicious-- you'd never know we were in a natural disaster. Best food I ate in Asheville. Give good people who make good food business!

Ordered the special which was a filet and 1/2 lobster that came with risotto and vegetables. The lobster that was served was inedible and the risotto was chewy. The fillet was the only thing that was eaten on the plate. The restaurant offered lobster ravioli as a replacement. There was so much mint flavor in the sauce that it was inedible as well. Management refused to take the meal off of our bill because the filet was eaten. I understand charging for the filet but not the whole meal. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Oh my gosh. I can't say enough about this restaurant. The food was amazing. I ordered one of the specials "pecan roasted tuna in a sambuca cream sauce" and my friend went allll out with lobster and filet. The food had so many flavors that came together.. the service and meal were AMAZING!

Love this place and here's why. Host or hostess always friendly. Server always helpful and friendly. I start with this because we have been many times. I always love a Wood fired Grill. I had chicken Parm there, several times, and every time loved it. I frequently get that because my dinner date always gets something else I like to share. This time was an amazing ribeye on the wood fire! We also got the Fancy Wood fired bread.Mmmmmmmmm! Oh yes, great job bartender.

I had the Wagyu Meatball pasta. Let me tell you, the dish was perfection. The vodka sauce was light and full of flavor. The beef meatball was perfectly portioned and perfectly seasoned. The servers were attentive, and very informative. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The decor and atmosphere were intimate.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] If you're in the area I highly recommend this establishment!

My fiancé took me here for my birthday, and I felt celebrated every step of the way. Our server Laura brought us a complimentary small bite before the meal and after dessert. She also made dessert super special and was kind and attentive the whole meal! The food was all phenomenal, I couldn't believe it was all gluten free. It felt very fresh due to the farm to table nature of the restaraunt. We started with the cheddar biscuits, which were a hit. My short rib with polenta and roast veggies was delectable and a very generous portion! Finally, we ordered 1 dessert but they brought us a trio. I was wowed by the cheesecake and olive oil cake! Would definitely return for date night or any other special occasion!

I was in communication with Lindsay for over four months while exploring options for hosting my wedding dinner in their private dining space. Out of more than 10 venues and vendors we considered, she was the only one who consistently showed up with prompt, thoughtful, and genuinely kind communication. Every question I had--no matter how detailed or repetitive--was answered with patience and care. She made herself available through all my moments of uncertainty, which, as any out-of-state bride can attest, is invaluable. When we finally visited in person, Lindsay went above and beyond by accommodating us outside of regular scheduling. Her attentiveness and warmth never wavered. Planning a wedding from afar can feel overwhelming, but having someone like her in your corner brings a level of reassurance that cannot be overstated. Dinner itself was nothing short of exceptional. We were served by Tennille, who elevated the entire experience. She was engaging, knowledgeable, and incredibly personable. Every dish was presented with intention, and she took the time to walk us through ingredients , local farm sourced education and preparation in a way that made the meal feel curated and special. You can tell she genuinely cares about the guest experience--it shows in every interaction. After dinner, we visited their second location to explore their private dining options. There, we met Pierre, who matched the same level of service and hospitality. He went out of his way to not only show us the space, but also recommend local after-dinner spots that could enhance the overall experience for our bridal party. That level of thoughtfulness and big-picture thinking is rare. Bottom line: this team understands that they're not just serving food--they're creating experiences. If you're looking for a venue that delivers on service, communication, and unforgettable dining, this is it.

We had some time to kill before our reservation so we went down to the speakeasy for a few and then up to the rooftop. Each area had different drinks so of course I had to order one from each. I was drinking mocktails btw. Not sure if the alcoholic options were different. My most favorite was the corn silk. It's seasonal though. We finally made it to our table and I was welcomed with a card signed by everyone and fresh flowers on the table. Since we did wait past our reservation time, we received complementary bread service which was homemade focaccia with marigold butter. Definitely recommend; it was amazing. I also received a birthday gift of veggies - okra and shishito peppers, I believe. I LOVE veggies so this was special to me. But then I also got the most amazing soft serve of corn and peppers with a tomato jam. Aside from it being my birthday and all the special things we got, the food was also amazing. We got the bone marrow tots to share, then I got the campanelle pasta. I forgot what my husband got but everything was just so so so sooooo amazing!! Our server was also amazing too. It's like everyone we met was just so happy we were there. And it was a genuine happy too. I felt so welcome there and we loved it so much we came back the next night too. I had to try the chanterelle mushroom gelato, but was too full the first night so I got it the second night along with more corn silk. The gelato was amazing btw. I don't think I've ever had chanterelle mushrooms, but now I can wait to eat them. We're home now but we are already planning our next trip back and would like to stay at the hotel next time. Definitely our new favorite place ever!

So we walked into Luminosa underdressed, absolutely soaking wet, and looking like we had just been rescued from a shipwreck. This is a really nice restaurant, so at this point I was pretty convinced either we weren't getting seated or my friends were going to spend the rest of their marriage talking about the dinner I ruined. I explained the situation to the staff and they could not have handled it better. No judgment, no making us feel out of place, nothing but an insane level of hospitality from the second we walked in. They even sent out a few dishes on the house. Our server Riley was phenomenal. Riley knew the menu inside and out, gave us all the information we needed without overexplaining everything, and never steered us wrong once. We basically put our dinner in Riley's hands, and that was probably the biggest reason the meal turned out as well as it did. And the food was fucking incredible. Not "we're drunk on a wedding weekend and everything tastes good" incredible. Every single one of us said it was one of the best meals we've ever had. And I don't say that because my culinary experience is limited to Applebee's and the Cheesecake Factory. I went to probably half the restaurants on the Michelin Guide while I was in Asheville, live in Atlanta where I've eaten at plenty of Michelin-recognized restaurants, and have been fortunate enough to eat at Michelin restaurants outside the US. Luminosa was still one of the best meals I've had anywhere. I walked in thinking I had completely screwed up dinner and walked out looking like a genius for picking the restaurant. I will be taking full credit for that and giving none to the tornado or Riley.

It looks like they also have two bar places to sit at and enjoy food. Curate was nicely decorated on the inside. The space was clean and welcoming. Restrooms: They have two gender neutral bathrooms. One restroom has a changing pad for babies. The restrooms were nice and clean. Service: All the staff we encountered were very friendly. The staff was very knowledgeable about the menu and dishes. The food came out quickly. When we did call about a high chair, it took about 3 calls to finally talk to someone about it. They do have high chairs for babies. Food: We came here because it was recommended by several people to try. We thought the food was good. We have several similar tapas restaurants back at home to compare too and we felt the food was good but not extraordinary in our opinion based off the hype Curate has received. We tried their 'Croquetas de Jamon' to start. They were good, but definitely tasted better with the recommended hot sauce. We also tried their 'Roasted Seasonal Pepper Special' (it wasn't on the menu but recommended by our waitress) and it was ok. It could've used more seasoning and salt in my opinion. Next we tried their 'Berenjenas Con Miel' or fried eggplant, that was really good. We loved the salty and sweetness of the dish. It also wasn't heavy or greasy. Lastly, we shared their 'Arroz de Temporada' paella. That was my favorite dish, the sausage was so flavorful and I loved the burst of the tomatoes. The rice was cooked to perfection. It's definitely enough to share between just two people. Overall, I wasn't blown away by the food like I was expecting. I feel like there might've been dishes we should've tried to really give us that wow factor. This seems like a nice place to come for a nice meal. If we're ever in the Asheville area again, I'd be willing to give them one more try.
