I got ripped off by Ed. I threw his work in the scrap heap and found a company that did a flawless job in a few days: Atlas Sheet Metal in Irvine CA (No, I do not get anything for referring them). Ed's Workmanship was bad and had bug holes in welds, Finishing was uneven and not clean, Corners were rough, Fireplace surround was warped and the wrong size and the wrong material. It has a gap that allows embers to drop into the wall creating a fire hazard, the surface gets hot enough to burn hands (aluminum conducts heat 30 times faster than stainless) and he was 5 weeks behind schedule. It looked so bad, my daughter asked if it was made from cardboard spray-painted silver. Ed admitted he made a mistake and offered a refund, but never sent any funds back and even charged my credit card without my permission. There is not anything else he could do wrong: material, workmanship, dimensions, safety, schedule, customer service, pricing... all bad! It will be an easy win in Small Claims Court if I make time to go. Look closely at the photos on his website. Even some of the ones he is proud of are not very good. He wants you to do the measuring and installing so he has less risk, but even then, he can't match the plans and specifications. Rustic: yes. Modern: not even close. Proceed with caution! I have been a customer of Moderustic for 10+ years and l have to say I am very disappointed. Over this past weekend, our fireplace mirror exploded... literally glass everywhere! Could have been so much worse if we hadn't had our fireplace screen in place. I called and emailed, and after much back and forth the response from Moderustic was for me to completely tear apart the fireplace to measure the placement of the gas line, which was installed by my contractor to the exact spec that Moderustic spec'd (I personally measured because I knew the importance of this). Removing all of the glass, etc is not an easy task nor should I have to jump thru hoops for a faulty piece. Final response was "sorry, we do not warranty our parts". From the start of my fireplace remodel until it's completion, everything was handled professionally and in a timely matter. Ed offered solutions I hadn't considered with my fireplace. For one, to add the black glass side and front mirror panels which really added a clean and finished look. My fireglass reflects nicely with the added mirrors. Found this company online and realized they were located a city away so I sent an email advising I was coming in to the showroom. They need your fireplace dimensions, front to back,opening width and back wall width, photo if possible, then they can tell you how much product and what burner you will need. Showroom has lot of options for sands, glass and toppers, I found the options a bit overwhelming since there were so many option but settled on a glass and terra-cotta fireballs that were all in stock, yeah. The staff are very knowledgeable, and answered my million questions. Ed, the president or owner took the time to draw a diagram of where I should place the burner, how to place it, what you need to do with the sand and glass to get the look you want, I found the pricing reasonable and grateful for the knowledge they gave to ensure i get the outcome I am looking for. Horrible quality products. I was charged a lot of money for a custom water fire feature and what I received was a poorly fabricated non working item that was literally made with glue and spray paint. On top of that it did not even work. Ed the Owner promises you will be completely satisfied and charges you everything up front. We asked for a refund within days of receiving this unit and was refused. It did not work and was poorly made and not what we had ordered. BUYER BEWARE. They do not stand behind their work and quality workmanship is not within their capabilities. Moderustic sells fireplaec glass. Instead of installing fake looking logs into your fireplace, you put colored glass into the fireplace. If you'e ever been to the Palm Springs market night, they have a booth there every week. It's better to see their pictures than read my lame description of their product. The store is attached to an auto glass repair shop and definately has an industrial feel to it. Inside, there's hundreds of colors of glass and toppers. These are displayed in utilitarian display cases on the wall where you can grab a handful to mix-and-match samples. You can make any combination of glass to suit your mood, seasons, or decor. Some folks even create patterns in their glass, such as team logo's and such. Crushed glass, polished, large "ice cubes", rocks, even ceramic stones. You can take home the materials the same day. You pick, pay, they pack it, load it, and explain the installation process. It's quite simple and will take less than an hour to install. They sold me the wrong sized burner so it didn't look very good. After letting them know, they sent me a replacement free of charge without any hassle, arguing or back and forth. It's so rare to find places that care about happy customers even after they your money! The only real downside is that the guys there aren't too good about recommending color combinations. They've got too many choices and they don't make it easy for you to narrow it down. Sure, that's my fault... but that leads me to the second complaint. They only have one display unit there. I wish they had more displays to show popular color combinations or let you see how more of the toppers look. That all said, it's still a place. The end product is much nicer than logs and puts out way more heat... how often does that happen? Good looking and more functional? The owner cares about happy customers and will do his best to make sure he's earned your business. read more

I contacted the president of Moderustic, Ed, as I had seen a fire pit on their website that his company had manufactured that I was interested in having reproduced for my own home. I emailed details and images and spoke with him on the phone explaining what I was looking for. My initial phone conversation should have been a clue to what continuing to work with him would entail, as his demeanor was degrading to my intellect and understanding of the product I had been researching to invest in. He didn't listen to my needs; exemplified by the fact that I had to give him the same details multiple times. To top it off, after multiple follow-ups regarding an estimate, he once again asked me to draw what I wanted. Since I had already spent time sending a PHOTOGRAPH of exactly what I was looking for, I found this to be an unneccessary step. Considering I was prepared to spend thousands of dollars on Ed's product, he should have been the one drawing something for my approval if this was necessary for the production process. When I shared my frustration with the process his response was "It is not difficult to reproduce. We work for the customer and we are told what to do. I was just asking for drawings to eliminate any possible mistakes. I don't do he said, she said. If it is in writing it cannot be disputed. You should know that." If he didn't want my business, it could have been left at that. I find it disrespectful and quite offensive to be addressed in that manner. Clearly, customer service is not this company's strong point. But based on the other reviewer's comments that he stays as far away from offering suggestions and expertise in his product line as possible, this isn't really surprising. read more

I didn't know much about the whole fire on ice type fireplaces, but after doing some research online it seemed easy enough for me to do on my own, so I contacted Moderustic to get some pricing. Let me work backwards and say that my fireplace turned out nicely and was as easy to install as I had assumed. I ended up using 2" of glass over 1" of pea gravel, and it looks identical to what a 3" glass would look since you can't see the pea gravel below. I had some minor issues with this company that keeps me from giving a higher rating, mainly on the customer service side. First off, the gal who answers the phone and takes orders needs a lesson in customer service. I spoke to her a few times and each time she made it seem like they were doing me a favor. I spoke to the president Ed once, and he wasn't unpleasant but wasn't as helpful as he could have been. Another complaint I had was with their website, which is unnecessarily cluttered and needs to be streamlined considerably. It's good that it has a lot of information, but it's not well organized and there is a lot of duplication. But their online calculator is helpful. My last issue is that the shipping price was different from what they quoted me on the phone, and delivery took a few days longer than they had promised. But in the end, I got a nice looking DIY fireplace for about $300 so I am happy with the results. read more

We live out of state, so all of our dealings with this company were either by phone or online. (One exception: We met up with "Ed" at his Village Fest display on a recent trip to Palm Springs.) We were eager to attempt an installation since no one in our area would even talk to us about converting our fireplace gas stove from logs to fire glass. Ed assured us it could be done. When our conversion kit and glass arrived, we were surprised that there were no written instructions. We hooked the burner up, the stove wouldn't light. We got apprehensive so we put the aritifical logs and the orginal burner back in the stove. I wrote to Ed to see about a partial refund. He demanded to know why we didn't send him pictures of our progress. We would have, had we known he wanted that! And, as far as the refund went, his answer was "Absolutely not" read more

I found modernistic while searching online for firetables and their designed looked very nice. They indicated they could build a custom table for me. I provided pictures and a sketch with dimensions. At this point things began to get odd. After sending the pictures, they responded they could do i but could I send a sketch? This seemed like an innocent error. The owner- Ed suggested we build a cardboard mock up of the table for $125 which would go towards the project. It took about a month and probably 6-8 phone calls to make this actually happen. Usually the person answering the phone had no clue who I was and knew nothing about my order. Sometimes they would say Ed would call me back, but he never did. Finally perhaps 1 month later the cardboard box came. At this point I emailed and phoned them I would like to proceed. Again, the customer service was bad, with calls going unreturned. Marie answered the phone and she is disorganized and distracted. I finally wrote the owner, Ed that if he didn't have time to make it please let me know. At this point he called me back reassuring me he could do it. Unfortunately he sent me a spec with inconsistent dimension and blatant errors. Be careful dealing with this vendor and they will waste lots of your time and potentially cost you alot of money. I was disappointed then he refused to issue me a refund. Of all the places I got firepit glass samples from Moderustic had the best quality hands down. We bought a fire ring burner and a large amount of glass and the owner Ed is a pleasure to deal with and he's very passionate about the fire glass. He's also extremely helpful in setting up fireplaces and firepits. If you drive to their shop they have tons of styles and colors to choose from and you can pick it up right there in Ziplock bags or 5 gallon buckets and they'll help load it in your car for you. As the previous review from James said, they do not help you select colors or suggest what looks good. This was our experience as well and it's important that you choose your colors wisely! After choosing a sexy red color and not being happy when we realized it looked black we returned it (the staff was very helpful with this) and went with something lighter. Ed said they don't suggest colors because he likes people to be creative and doesn't want to sway them...but he did offer us a hint: The lighter the color, the more brilliant when lit. Using this info we went with a brilliant aqua/teal azurite glass and a bright orange topper and after 2 years of many evenings spent around our firepit we couldn't be happier. Called before purchasing fireballs & was assured that there was not any safety issues with using their fireballs in an outdoor fire pit. Kind of even made me feel stupid for asking the question. Made the purchase and used several times before one cracked & had hot pieces of glazed ceramic material flying on our new deck. Luckily my wife & daughter weren't struck by the debris. My new (over 3k sofa) wasn't so lucky. I sent pictures of the damage & spoke with an employee of the company who asked me to send receipts from the purchase & also the damaged couch-which I did the same day. The owner Ed responded to one email asking why I was sending it to him. I explained & asked for him to call me. He never responded to that email or a follow up email or multiple calls. Based on my experience the owner is a jerk that doesn't care about the safety of his products or providing any level of customer service.
