I had been coming here years ago, even though i didn't live in Bridgeport. I was always happy with the haircuts. About three years ago, after moving into the neighborhood, I came in, and on the owner's recommendation, I decided to get my hair colored. He wanted to try a color that would not clash with my face color (???) and I told him to do whatever he wanted...AS LONG AS I DIDN'T HAVE TO COME IN EVERY 2 WEEKS TO TOUCH UP THE ROOTS. I worked, had two young kids at home, a husband working the afternoon shift and I didn't have time to come in that often...at the time, getting into the salon every 6 months was a treat! Well, he did his magic and my hair looked BEAUTIFUL!!! The style, the color was great, although it seemed really light. I was only used to getting subtle highlights prior to this. He assured me I would be able to go a couple of months before having to get a touch up. The cost was pricey because it included a cut, de-color (?), and color. I came home and my husband almost jumped me when I walked in. He loved it! Well, 2 weeks go by and I start to see these really dark roots coming out. After the third week, I couldn't stand it anymore, went to the drugstore, got an over the counter hair coloring kit, and dyed my hair back to my natural color. Don't get me wrong, if I had the time (like I do now) I would have kept up the look. But because I didn't and I specified I didn't, I was angry and didn't come back for about 3 years. I found a new place on North Ave. that was awesome, but a trek for me, especially if there was traffic. I tried to get a last minute appt. there one day and couldn't get in and so I decided to try Modern Wave again. I am glad I did. I left happy, came back again, and let Ted work his magic AGAIN. I explained the past situation to him and he found a color for me (that also covered the grey) and now I'm coming in on a regular basis. After years of cutting my own hair (and poorly), I caved and scheduled an appointment at another hair salon. The entire experience was awful, and I didn't even get my hair cut, so I knew I needed to go to a reputable place. I scoured yelp and found Modern Wave, read the reviews, and immediately scheduled my appointment with Alex. There was no wait time (the other experience was half an hour), and I was greeted very warmly. He took my coat, and talked with me about my options, and how I wanted things done. After getting a great shampoo, conditioning, and head massage, he did his magic. He showed me how my hair works, areas where my hair wouldn't match the picture I showed him, and walked me through the entire process. The cut is fantastic, the process was amazing and quick (and painless), and I'll definitely be scheduling my next haircut here in a couple months. I like to support our local neighborhood businesses. Its what we should do to keep our community thriving. I love coming to Modern Wave Salon, because they treat you like family. I came last December for a loose spiral perm. Ted has been doing perms for a long time and knew exactly how to perm my hair. The perm lasted for almost a year! I'm back to Modern Wace again today to have another perm done. I wouldn't trust anyone else to do a perm to my hair. I have had highlights and also a few hair cuts here a MW as well. Love it! Staff is all friendly and funny. Salon looks like it's high end but pricing is very reasonable. Cut, color, facial, mani and pedi combo only $180. They do threading and wax as well. They cut both women and men's hair. Owner Ted is very knowledgeable with women's color. They do fill up quickly and you may wait in the wait area for a little while, but it's worth it. Myra does the best pedicures in the city. Alex and Ted are artists with scissors. read more

When I first considered coloring my hair, Ted did a test to see if my skin tone was complimented by warm or cool colors. The result was remarkable. A great haircut by Alex once again! Hadn't gotten a haircut for more than 4-5 months and finally decided it was time to get a new do when my hair remained flatter than flat no matter what I did to it! Yes, I'm a lazy bum and major procrastinator, but that's why I need a great stylist to give me a boost when I need it! I had a great cut the last time from Alex, so of course I had to go back. I know they're normally quite busy on Friday and Saturdays, so i picked an off peak time in the middle of the week and was relieved that there was no wait. Staff was great. Got my hair washed right away and the girl who was doing it was very friendly. I tried to describe the style I wanted and Alex got it pronto. As always, we had some fun chatter while he snipped snipped away. It's been a while since I've had short hair, and I was a bit nervous as to how it would come out after I've been used to shoulder length hair . But my goodness! The stacked-bob as he called it, came out wonderfully! He took his time and cut it perfectly to the length I specified and even went through how I should maintain it even before i opened my mouth to ask him. The new haircut makes me feel younger and more energetic if you can believe it. My family loved it and I've been receiving compliments from men and women alike at work. I've been to a number of different salons in the past few years, but always tend to venture back to Modern Wave (a few times to fix some awful cut from another place!). So I'd highly recommend this place if you like a casual atmosphere with the feel of a neighborhood salon. I LOVE Modern Wave. I am a very unique person when it comes to my hair and have very vague ways of explaining what i want and how I want it to look (Basically I am unhelpful) However, Ashley nails it every time. I can not say one bad word. You walk in and everyone is super friendly. Even if your not their customer everyone there shows interest and is just super nice. I always get a big hug from Ashley when I come in and it feels like going to a friends house but getting an awesome service. There are a couple of things I look for in a hairdresser, and Natalie not only met, but exceeded my requirements. Before going near the chair she just sat and talked to me about what my hair routine was and what look I was going for (and how I could join the two). I'm a wash and go kind of girl, so I wanted a cut that would give me reasonable volume without me having to fuss with it too much and bangs that would frame my face naturally. She gave me a couple of ideas before we decided on a cut and also made sure to check in with me when she was cutting my bangs to make sure that she didn't cut them too short. On top of all that, she gave me quick and simple tips for how to get the style that I want on special occasions-I was so impressed that I booked my appointment for next month right away. Just moved to the area, so I was looking for a place to do a Brazilian wax. Laura did an excellent job. I am very happy with the results. She also informed me of other services they offer in a way that was not pushy. I appreciate that. The front desk staff must have been in training because they did not seem knowledgeable about how to deal with people that are new customers like myself. Overall, I am very happy and will definitely be back for a wax. Might also try Modern Wave Salon for a facial and a haircut. Why travel all over the city, if one place can do it all. You Must GO SEE TED. If you color your hair, you MUST go seek out Ted, the owner of this small salon in a low-keyed area on 26th St, not a dangerous area despite how it looks. I paid an amazingly low price, after being gouged by a "high end" salon on the north side. I mean, under $125 for a touch-up, a bang trim, and a conditioning. He perfectly matched the Redken formula written by my last colorist in CA., and was a sweet, kind person, also a christian. The color is perfect! He even wanted to fix some areas that the guy in the "high-end" salon screwed up. The assistants are sweet and nice, but most of all to me, it is NOT filled with attitude, it is not "chi-chi". I am not impressed with that kind of snooty treatment - you pay to have THEM talk down to you? I have died and gone to heaven after finding Modern Wave. If you color your hair - you know how hard it is to find an ethical, talented person. read more

They have a nice assortment of products and deals but are not pushy about selling them. Natalie was my stylist and she gave me a great haircut! We had a brief consultation beforehand so she could understand my hair type and what I was looking for. She gave honest advice that I appreciated and gave me some tips for how to achieve my desired look at home. My cut was great when we were all done; exactly what I was looking for! I originally called Aniko to schedule an appointment with Gilbert. The receptionist stated that he was unavailable during the times I wanted to schedule my appointment. Gilbert overheard her talking to me and got on the phone and offered to see me at a salon where he is teaching. BIG PLUS! Once again, I walked out of the Modern Wave salon with what I call fabulous "Hair by Gilbert." Gilbert has moved to Modern Wave from a salon in the Loop and I would seriously follow him anywhere in Chicago. The salon is a great neighborhood spot where you feel welcome. And Gilbert is beyond words wonderful. He has taken me from an uber-short brunette cut to Ellen Barkin blonde and I look and feel incredible. My cut lets me go no-maintenance for days and the color stays and stays. He's there Wednesday through Sunday.
