Excellent local car service. I had a list of required services from a dealer garage, including exchanging the Rear Springs, Spark Plugs and the ubiquitous flush of all kind of fluids. Apparently, none of this was necessary. Modern Tire checked all this for free, said there is really no service needed and I should return when the next oil service is due. They didn't even charge for it. First rate, honest service. I previously had a major repair and a brake service on another car. All were very competitively priced and apparently well performed. I had a check engine light on They were so helpful they went above and beyond . Nicest people I've had the pleasure dealing with in a very long time . Nice guys but they broke the tire sensor when replacing a tire and denied it . Told me to have a Jeep dealer reset the tire light because they couldn't do it due to interference from other Jeep's round . The light mysteriously came on after they replaced the tire and they swore the sensor was good . I saw the report from the Jeep scan after I had to go to the dealer . A tire sensor isn't expensive and if they admitted they broke it by accident I would have not been upset . Instead I had to make a service appointment with Jeep and find the truth . Never went back to Modern after that. read more

My local mechanic has closed his doors and I needed to bring my 10 year old Forester somewhere (other than a dealer) for some TLC. My car was on the brink of overheating on warm days/drives. These guys were great, I called them on a Friday and had an appointment for Monday. They didn't call until later in the afternoon to let me know the issue (water pump/timing belt) and to say that they needed a second day. Lucky for me I can work from home when I need to so it wasn't an inconvenience. They fixed me up by noon the following day, after giving me the total and me giving them the OK TO GO. I also mentioned to them that I found them via a personal referral and they took $20 off my bill for saying so. I thought that was super cool of them. My wife has already made an appointment with them for next week. For me this place works, they seem honest, quick and they're very conveniently located. Special bonus, my car was a tick loud and I also asked them to check out the exhaust. They said there wasn't anything wrong with it but once they fixed the water pump, the car purrs like a 10 year old cat (super quiet). read more

This is the auto service place you've been looking for. Easy to deal with...totally trustworthy...reasonably priced...and if you live anywhere near West Hartford center, very convenient. As an example: The dealer recently told me my Jeep needed a repair that was going to cost at least $700. They couldn't do it that day, so I brought it to Brian at Modern for another look. He told me it's a common, minor issue among older Jeeps that rarely actually needs fixing (a very slow leak). And didn't even charge me for that opinion. The guys at Modern Tire are truly the real deal and their positive reviews do not lie. They run an honest business and don't try to sell you services or parts you don't need, which is basically unheard of in the auto world. I recently stopped in for a set of brand new tires and a front brake job on my SUV and had the pleasure of working with Brian. He actually told me upfront I might want to check out a big box store for tires if I could get them cheaper, which I thought was incredibly nice and sincere of him. Brian was actually able to get another set of better tires down in price to as low as he could go and I was so impressed with his honesty and integrity that I spent a little more with Modern Tire rather than picking up tires elsewhere. So far, the tires have been phenomenal (and better than the ones I had and was going to purchase elsewhere). My front brakes couldn't be better. What also impressed me was that my entire job, which was pretty much booked at the last minute, was completed on time and when they said it would be. It is a fact that this place does NOT LIKE OLDER CARS. If your car is not one run by a computer, they will up charge you like crazy for the smallest of issues and will honestly not want to work with you. They told a friend they wouldn't be able to drive their car off of the lot. Instead they did and got it fixed elsewhere for a better price than they were offering. I am bringing my car in today to check out my squeaky brakes. I have come in here a couple of times before to get a quote on tires, then on a 60,000 mile service and they have always been a bit on the high side compared to the chains like Pep Boys or Jiffy Lube, but only slightly better than the dealership. It's close to home and there are lots to do if I have to wait for the car for a couple of hours. It is also voted by Advocate Readers as the Best Car Repair Shop of 2011 (http://www.ct.com/news/advocates/best-of-ct/hartford/2011/driving/ht-best-car-repair-shop-20110420,0,6647184.story). I will update my review after the repair is completed. UPDATE I just picked up my car from Modern Tire & Auto Service and the problem was fixed. It was the brakes from the front tires as suspected. When I arrived around 11:30 am, I was told that they won't be able to check on the car until 2:00 pm and was asked if I could come back. Gladly took the time to run errands and when I went back at 2 pm, I was told it will be an hour before they can assess the problem. I got a call in 30 minutes with a full diagnosis and cost of part and service. I have nothing to compare it with so I went ahead and got the service done. I was given about an hour before the car would be ready but it was done in 45 minutes. When I picked up the car, I was made aware that they also looked at the rear brakes and made adjustments to extend the wear. To my surprise, the emergency brake was also adjusted! Overall, I was very happy with the experience. I am giving it another 48 hours before I can truly say I recommend them. But so far, Modern Tire provided efficient and courteous service. read more

I got new tires here, and they were very nice, fast and helpful. I got a good price on my tires and they were done in less than an hour. I felt the price was fair and the service was efficient. It's in a nice location because you don't have to just sit and wait in the waiting room, you can walk to Whole Foods or any place in Blue Back and just hang out and maybe do a little shopping. I went to the gym for an hour and when I came back I was all set. I'll probably be coming back here when I need service on my car. Addition!: I came here again with a slow leak in a tire. They took me right away without any notice or appointment and fixed the problem right away (screw in tire!) for under $20. I went with a friend a few weeks later to her dealership to fix the same problem that I had (screws!). Not only did they take almost an hour, they charged her $70! What a rip. read more

I went in because I needed a tow hitch removed from my vehicle. They quoted me $30-$50 (very fair) and I was afraid that would jack that up and say it took longer since mechanics charge by the hour. Stopped into whole foods to use their bathroom and I came out to a dead car battery. Apparently no one has cables in the West Hartford area (Self included). Ran across the street and they were happy to lend me their charge box on my word that I would bring it back. When I couldn't get a good connection, they drove over themselves to help me out. Never have done any actual business with them, but their willingness to be a good samaritan for nothing in exchange makes me eager to see what they do when you actually pay for their service.
