Came here by accident. Our usual go-to place was booked and we decided to try something new. I have not heard anything about this place before so we slightly worried if we liked it at all. Though a bit of the pricey side, the place is fantastic. Absolutely loved the food, be back very soon. The service was great. Liked the decor. Did not think much about the music, though. read more

I know this is a steak place but I'm not really onto steak and had cheese fondue instead. The fondue was pretty good, though it didn't have enough creaminess to it and it is only served with bread (a couple of other options for $$). I would have preferred more options for the dippers (veggies). The service was good, and staff were very friendly. read more

Modern Steak - Great Martini!! - Seafood Near Me - Calgary, Alberta

A popular higher end steak joint for years now and it's only been the second time I've come. I'll admit my first visit was nothing that met my expectations. My second visit was perhaps a little better and I'm still trying to grasp why people love it so much. I'll have to say that the food was very good though I'm still having to get used to the ambience. I can't put my finger on it. Still love the truffle popcorn though! read more

Came here for The Big Taste YYC 2015. I love when I'm able to reserve online ahead of time with such ease! We hoped and prayed that we would be able to find street parking, but sadly not. Luckily there is a parkade right across the street, and evening rates were not too expensive. We were sat on the second level overlooking the convenience store and parkade across the street. We had quite a good time people watching throughout the night. As we waited for our meals, we were provided with a bowl of truffle oil popcorn; which we ate in quick time. Course 1 of our meal was the "mini lobster poutine". It was decadent to say the least. There were actually whole chunks of lobster which we had not expected. I was craving for more of the "lobster gravy" though as the poutine felt a bit dry at the end. Course 2 was the "brant lake waygu - 5oz hanging tender, mashed potato, garlicky green beans, jus". The steak was cooked perfectly. We found the steak to have a bit of chew to it though. I didn't enjoy the 'jus' part of the dish as it overwhelmed the plate way too much, way too heavy on the pepper. I ended up relinquishing a majority of the plate to the bf to enjoy. Course 3 was the "callebaut chocolate mousse". This dish really confused me. Never have I had mousse so stiff. It felt more like soft fudge, the presentation of it was really cute though. We were given very large spoons to eat with, which did not do well for my experience as it was very difficult to get the "mousse" off my spoon; couldn't get it to fit in my mouth. Overall, I don't think we got a full experience with our visit here this time. After reading other reviews, I think that if given the opportunity, I would give their steaks one more try before writing it off in my books. Will take note to visit again next time I'm In the area. read more

We went here to celebrate my father in law's birthday on a Friday night. We've been here a couple times before and the previous experience was always fantastic. This time we were seated downstairs which is nice because we've never been seated down there before. We ordered the scallops, scallop and prawn ceviche, brant lake wagyu ribeye, sides of parmesan truffle fries, baked potato, mushrooms, arctic char, cheesecake and apple crumble. The scallops came with a short rib croquette which overshadowed the scallops. The scallops were just alright definitely nothing to write home about and the croquettes too. The ceviche was probably the biggest disappointment; it was bland and there was no hint of citrus whatsoever and for $27; we would not recommend ordering it. The arctic char was also a little bit overcooked and the dish was kind of bland. The steaks were also not tender. The diners that had the steaks said that the steaks were better at Caesar's. The highlights of the meal was the mushrooms, fries and apple crumble. I would be very hesitate to come here again since this time the food definitely was not up to par compared to the prior visits. read more

Highly recommended for steak! I was recommended the flat iron steak. And it was fantastic - full of flavour and very the tender. Their sides that comes the steak is great and perfect for sharing. If you double up, it's too much of one side in my opinion. read more

Probably my FAVE steakhouse in town. Cool ambience, friendly staff. Spent our anniversary here 2 years ago, and it was perf! The place wasn't as spacious, but the food is incredibly goood! read more

The food wasn't catered to everyone. It doesn't cater to children. The food came out cold and it wasn't the best service. I just feel like they should be nicer. And they don't include most things that are actually on the food on the menu. read more

This was our first experience here and the atmosphere was wonderful. Although the food wasnt up to par, the staff was very friendly and accommodating to help us make our experience better. Downside was that the restaurant was very cold hence why our pasta wasnt as warm as we would expect it to be and the poutine fries were extremely salty. We also ordered the seafood platter and the Tbone steak and it was really good. Other than that, everything was okay. 5 stars to the staff for being very understanding and considerate by giving us different options to make up for the dishes etc. It was a nice gesture but sadly, we were getting full so we didnt want to waste the food. read more

In one word.... astounding. The food, service, atmosphere. All amazing. It is pricey to eat there, but having some discount cards we gave it a shot. We booked a table at 5, which is apparently when they open and when no one else in the city likes to eat on a Sunday, because we were the only ones in the restaurant the entire time we ate. It made it a little awkward, but also made the service extra good due to the personal server. The steak was amazing. So perfect. Didn't know you could even order steak from a different county of Alberta right off the menu. but you can Highly recommended read more

Ok, as usual I go into a new place with an open mind. Nice greeting at the door, cool ambiance, great layout. Good wine list and the martinis were tasty. That is where is went all wrong for me. We both ordered steaks. My brother ordered medium rare and I ordered medium well. His came out perfect .... Mine came out well well done and dry as can be. The baked potato was huge! It actually hid the steak on the plate and was equally as dry as the steak. Thank goodness we had wine to wash it down as no water was provided. They did offer to cook another steak, but I was taught to eat what was on my plate. Sorry guys/gals... Won't be coming back. read more

Went with buddies to Modern Steak yesterday, the restaurant itself is very nice and is in the space that was previously occupied by The Muse. We ordered two appetizers, the beef tartare (which was my favourite dish of the night) and the poutine. For my meal I ordered the Wagyu NY striploin medium rare with truffle butter and shared an assortment of modern sides with my buddies which included mash potatoes, scalloped potatoes, mushrooms, truffle fries and mac n cheese. I was disappointed with my steak which was lukewarm and lacked the richness that I would expect from a wagyu cut. Everyone else from the group came away expecting more based on the price. The truffle butter did not add much to the steak. I would have given a three star but given the price point I felt a 2 rating was appropriate. The modern sides weren't very memorable but not much to complain about. Service was great just felt that the food experience was disappointing after reading many reviews on yelp. Not sure I will return as there are far better options for the price. read more

Great steak, wine selection is excellent. The sides were not my favourite, but you don't come here for the sides. Great date night place, will definitely be back. read more

Four of us went to the Stephen Ave restaurant before a concert on Sunday. Our server, George, was great as were the Manhattans, but the food failed to live up to either the price or the hype. As a steak lover I was very excited to visit the new restaurant. My buddy and I both had the 14 oz ribeye and my wife had the petite tender. Both of the ribeye were severely lacking in any marbling and the petite tender was not very tender. We did mention it to George, who brought the manager over. He did offer to replace the steak but we passed. There was also mention that one of the steaks would not be charged on the final bill, which was gracious, but after talking later on that evening we realized that no discount actually occurred. Now, I may go back and try again. The location and ambience were great, but at the prices charged, I will be reticent to dive into another pricey ribeye. Frankly we have had much better steaks at The Keg! read more

Ambiance and service is great. Ribeye and Wagyu Beef is excellent - taste, tenderness and presentation. Lobster is fresh and sweet. Cheese fondue is perfect for starter. Will definitely go back again. A nice place to celebrate any occasion. read more

Modern Steak - Seafood Near Me - Calgary, Alberta

By far, the best steak house I've been to. The only place in Calgary to get dry-aged, grass-fed Alberta beef. Why buy imported when the real deal is right here? read more

We had a nice dinner. The flat iron steak was very good and service was good. We had a cheese fondue appetizer that was good. It comes with a lot of bread to dip and you can add other things to expand the experience. We got pears and shrimp for as I remember $6 and $18 respectively. It certainly makes a huge difference having the shrimp to dip compared to the bread alone. I'd try the beef option in the future as well as the shrimp. I was pleased that the server brought out a better quality steak knife than typically provided at a steak house. A $2 junky knife sawing away at a $40 steak diminishes the experience, so that was a good move. I also ordered a lobster tail to go with my steak that was average and the melted butter was unfortunately cool with the candle heater below unable to bring the butter temperature up. They provided popcorn at the table rather than bread while we looked over the menus. They can provide grass fed beef and pride themselves in their selection of small farm suppliers, which is great. Also, the menu has great explanations of the various cuts of beef and their attributes. A good dinner and if I was in the neighborhood, I'd have no problem going there again, but not special enough to make it a particular destination in the future. read more

My girlfriend and I spent our last evening in Calgary at Modern Steak, a recommendation by our Airbnb host. From the moment we stepped through the door, we were greeted very warmly, and we were taken care of by Tess, what a fantastic gal! I'm not sure if it's the Calgarian charm, but I strongly felt the experience from start to finish was fantastic! While waiting for our meals we were given a light snack to keep us occupied, which by the way was a brilliant idea, it kept our hungers sated just enough to allow room for the steaks and sides. I would totally recommend this restaurant to friends who are looking for great dining options. read more

Their advertised wagyu beef is not wagyu beef. For such an expensive steak I had expectations of soft tender steak. Instead I was disappointed with a tough, over cooked steak no different than The Keg. Appetizers were bland and not worth mentioning. read more

Close to good. Ribeye was cooked properly to request albeit a bit over than under but I did ask for that. The horseradish merlot sauce was very mild, was expecting more bite. The candied brussel sprouts were great, a faint memory of muse that used to be before the falling out of the ownership and it turning into modern steak. The cut itself was ok. The price is still expensive for kensington keeping locals away. 70$ not including tip for a steak, a pop, some brussel sprouts, a sauce and a cinnemon bun for desert. When I was there it was mostly businessmen and out of towners. Great place for a steak, they just need to tone it back to the neighboirhood and not so much on the fine dining ala carte side. Best streakhouse in Calgary so far from Keg to chop to montana to cattle baron to charcut to etc etc... xept my smokehouse steak... nothing can beat me in this city... dont touch the popcorn offered... youll regret it read more

I cannot review the food as we didn't even make it to the restaurant. I had called to book the private room for a board meeting. I spoke to a manager and provided them my reasonings for requiring this room, having a hearing impaired board member. I received a call from the restaurant on the morning of the reservation informing me that they could no longer accommodate my private dining, as someone had double-booked the private room. They asked me to move my reservation out of the private room or from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. In all my years of corporate planning at restaurants, I have never experienced this type of unprofessionalism. I can't even believe that a restaurant is operating like this. After getting upset with them, I received a further voice mail after the fact, saying that they had moved things around to accommodate me. (But only after vowing to never return and scrambling to find a new reservation). read more

Highly recommended as top 3 steakhouses to go to in Calgary. This is the best place for tomahawk steak, the best I've had at a restaurant in Canada. What makes this place great is that the restaurant has a great direct relationship with the farms it sources its meat from. Great side dishes and the seafood selection is awesome. We had the lobster tail. Also environment is great, very casual, relaxed, very professional, and not stuffy or snobby. Great friendly service from the servers, host and manager. (callout to Brandon who was super friendly and very open to my friend filming a black during the meal, which can be embarassing sometimes). Also located in Kensington which is a great neighbourhood. Highly highly recommended. I personally rate this steakhouse top 3 in Calgary, and #1 for tomahawks. read more

Excellent steaks. A little pricey but overall worth it. Truffle popcorn is awesome and so are the truffle fries but then I love truffles so basically anything with truffles is a winner for me. Steaks were perfectly cooked to order. We made a mistake in our order (totally our fault) but the restaurant immediately picked up on it and offered to cook a fresh steak to a different temperature even though we had ordered it wrong. Kudos for customer service and quickly noticing the issue and making it right. Overall a nice restaurant and well worth a visit if you like steak. read more

I had high expectations for this restaurant. The atmosphere was nice the location great. First I ordered a Mojito it was made horribly. Mashed potatoes where heaping bowl of glue. Mushrooms were drowned in what tasted like teriyaki sauce. Crab legs we're cold. The top sirloin steak was very good. My husband's baked potato was hard as a rock. As we went to pay the bill the waiter Mike hovered over us while we decided what we were going to tip. I was uncomfortable discussing this with him standing at my table so my husband asked him to bring us the change from $200 for $162 Bill. He came back to tell us they had no change. So my husband proceeded to take back the money and thank him for the free meal. The waiter then took the money back and said he would find change. He came back with two fives. We told him that wasn't good enough we wanted $20 back so he came back with four $5 bills and a big attitude. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone the prices are way over the top the food except for the steak it was really bad. We actually would have tipped him better if he didn't pull the we have no change. Who says that??? read more

Another one of those surprises from my husband. Got a call late. Get ready we are going out. Where? just be ready when I get home he said, some of you ladies know what I am talking about and guys you know what we mean. I thought ok! he is not proposing again but a new ring will be nice lol...this one is already 14 years old but I am still loving it, let say it still fits. Ok! for this one I had to put on my best piece. Off we go and it is getting late Calgary is cold most places are closed. Here we are Montanas last call for dinner order. I have to say I was very impressed with the service. At the end of the day like this everyone want to go home, but the waitress was patient and nice. I would recommend...There are different location but this was Sarcee Trail location. I would go back there again. read more

I went with a large group for a special occasion. Modern Steak is one meat focused restaurant that understands, contrary to popular belief, vegetarians and omnivores actually co-exist and often eat together, and so they had a few veg options that were actual meals, so smart! I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious mushroom risotto, and it can be done vegan if you ask. Everyone enjoyed their steaks, and the desserts looked/were yummy (I only tried the baked Alaska, but others had the chocolate mousse cake and creme brulee). Service was competent, but not friendly. Unique cocktails, I likes the Butterfly Effect. Cool vibe and atmosphere. Great for a special meal! read more

We went to Modern Steak yesterday to celebrate Father's Day and it was delicious, albeit pricey. My wife loves the beef tartare and she absolutely loved it. Very cool decor for this steak restaurant on the second floor.....their house raised beef (flank steak) so tender, even more awesome with the bernaise sauce. They said they serve their steak 'medium rare' but mine was definitely too rare & under- grilled.....would've sent it back but was too hungry. read more

Went to the Stephen Ave location for date night last Wednesday and I cannot stop thinking about it. My boyfriend and I were visiting from the states and were excited to try the famous Alberta beef -- it did not disappoint. Our server George was knowledgeable, efficient, friendly, and so accommodating. We got our date night steaks, wine, and the truffle fries and brussels for dinner, and the baked alaska for dessert, and with the date night special it was an absolute steal. The steaks were prepared perfectly and truly melted in our mouths. I had to stop myself from rushing through it so I could savor every bite. I usually fill up fast but I could've eaten three of them, it was so delicious. The sides were also great -- solid portions and very tasty. The baked alaska was flambéed tableside, which was an awesome touch, and had an amazing mix of flavors with the salted caramel, the lemon curd, fluffy merengue, and boozy kick. My only (very slight) negative was that I think our truffle popcorn got lost in the shuffle, which is a shame because we were looking forward to it, but we never followed up about it so that's on us. My boyfriend and I truly haven't stopped talking about it all week though and are already planning on coming back our next time in town. read more

Excellent space we had wagyu filet and ribeye, yummy. Quite expensive but lived up to the price.

Extremely disappointed with the food from what is purportedly Calgary's best steakhouse. My $69. 6oz Wagyu filet was very average and rather dry, thrown on a plate with absolutely zero garnish. The $17. Wagyu dumplings appetizer were drab and tasted like sawdust. We had to return two overdone tough and chewy steaks for new plates. Not sure why they ask what "special occasion" it is because they did not in any way recognize the birthday we were celebrating. All in all, two stars all around after coughing up close to $500. for dinner. I won't be back in this century. All that said, the service was very attentive. read more

I have always wanted to try Wagyu steak. I had the petite tender and I have to say it wasn't any better than any other good steak in town. My wife had the hanger and it had more flavor. Overall not a bad experience but for the price I would probably go somewhere else or try something new. read more

Sometimes it's difficult to find a place open on Dec 26 but I had been waiting to try Modern Steak since I saw it open and was happy to see I could make a reservation there on open table for my birthday. The truffle popcorn to start is delicious, nice and salty and fresh. We started with the Prawn Bong and didn't know what to expect - the menu says spicy but it could use a little more heat in my opinion. 5 Prawns made it a great share plate. The kale Cesar salad was delicious with fresh bacon. I had the 10oz tenderloin from High River, my parents both had 12oz Prime Rib and my wife had the Arctic Char. All the beef was cooked perfectly! I had the truffle fries and was scraping the bottom of the garlic aioli by the end. Be warned - the horseradish is very hot but also delicious. The fish was cooked perfect as well and came with delicious maple Brussels sprouts. For dessert we shared the cinnamon bun with vanilla gelato. The bun was fresh and it had two scoops of gelato which was a perfect ratio. The atmosphere reminded me of a Vegas lounge and had a chill vibe. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because the waitress seemed quite inexperienced. She did not go into any details with the menu and did not know the ingredients of any of the after dinner coffees. We could hear the other waitress at the next table and that's how we knew the features. I will definitely be back and will make this a neighbourhood favourite! read more

Oyster Thursday's!!! $1 west coast, $2 east coast. We ate so many I won't even admit. They were delicious. We also had the steak tartare as an appy served with truffle crisps and it was fantastic.
