This is the OG modern steak location /Modern ocean up top! Decided to come here as they told me the food at kensington is the best location had to give it a go!! Service : phenomenal from start to finish. As we came in, right away we were greeted with our hostess who found us a super romantic spot downstairs (stake resto) We were in a nice booth behind the main dining area and it felt very exclusive loved it! Our waitress came right away to explain the menu .. a little sad they didn't have soup on the menu as it was super cold and needed something to warm up. Nonetheless the food was absolutely fantastic everything was 5++++ stars fresh and melt in your mouth ! My drinks I had several.. martinis , some tropical breeze drink .. Overall the highlight was the fabulous steak my oh my this is arguably the BEST STEAK i have ever had in my life!! I don't think I can find a better place for steak this was absolutely divine. If you want a real steak i suggest this place and only this place .. Alberta is known for beef so i mean it makes sense :p Oysters were fresh and delicious, Shrimp were very fresh as well but our lobster tails were a lil overcooked. Mushroom risotto absolutely extraordinary yumm Overall such an amazing experience and a great place ! Best steakhouse I have been to ever !! 100 % recommend Cheers read more

On the strength of our one dinner we had in Calgary here recently, this place deserves a much better score than is shown here. Steaks beautifully cooked, sides excellent, very nice wine list. A lobster bisque as good as anything I've eaten in France, and better than anything I've had in North America - that was unexpected! Wonderful service, beautiful room. What's not to like? Thanks for a great evening folks. read more

As tourists, my friend's mission was to try some steak and booked a reservation here about a week in advance. We sat on the rooftop patio which had a nice casual vibe. My friends ordered the tomahawk dinner to share and for me, as a pescatarian I ordered the jumbo prawn risotto. I thought my dish was delicious and surprisingly really filling. My friends were stuffed too and barely finished the main course. This restaurant sits in the mid to high price range but I think the overall experience including the customer service makes it worth it. Also... they give you truffle popcorn for free. Yum ! read more

Modern Steak - Jumbo Prawn Risotto - Seafood Near Me - Calgary, Alberta

Really fantastic place for a meal, beverage or just to enjoy a sidewalk table. Calgary is a tough town for restaurants so you need an edge to keep customers returning. Modern Steak has the right equation to make a run for it. Located a short walk from the observation tower, Modern Steak offers an inside or outside table experience. Frankly I'm not sure why they have the title "Modern" other than its easy to remember. On my first visit, I shared the porterhouse steak for two with a friend. It was perfectly cooked and had the taste I hoped for. We also shared a skillet of garlic bread. Oh how many miles will I have to walk to burn those calories and who cares! The bourbon selection is fantastic and their prices are lower that what I see in the States. So, oh yeah I'm coming back! read more

Going out to a steakhouse is a rarity for me but every now and then, we like to treat ourselves. Modern Steak had a pretty reasonable Big Taste menu so we paid them a visit one Saturday evening. Menu from the outside. The inside is very high end, fancy; what I didn't expect was it to have two floors! Pretty slick. Dimming of the lights makes it perfect for date night, although hope you've got a fat wallet. It's a nice touch that they come to your table and let you choose your own personal steak knife! My sis and I settled on the Big Taste menu while O went off menu as he is picky when it comes to his steaks. - Truffle popcorn - these come out complimentary. Addictively good. Wish they brought out another bowl. - Oysters ($45.00 for dozen) - comes with the usual mignonette, lemon and horseradish accompaniments. Above average but I would wait and come on a Thursday for their buck a shuck. - Sauteed cremini mushrooms ($11.00) - these were flavourful and went well as an additional side to O's steak. Definitely overpriced though. - Oversized potato - didn't try any but the oversized potato was bigger than the steak on the plate! - Filet ($54.00 for 7oz) - this looked really small. Steaks are always pricey and MS has a huge range of them. At least you get one side included. Big Taste dinner ($35.00 for three courses) - Prawn bong - not bad as a starter but we enjoyed the popcorn more than this. - Brant Lake wagyu - 6 oz sirloin was the perfect size for my sis and I. Steak was cooked to a nice medium rare as we asked for. - Chocolate mousse cake - the dessert didn't look like much but it was smooth and decadent. The raspberry coulis helped bring a touch of sweetness. To me, this seems like a special occasion/business meeting spot unless you're a die hard steak eater. read more

I had a friend and my sister visiting me from out of town over the weekend. I took them to this restaurant, because of past reviews and comments I have heard back in 2017. My friend is a vegetarian and Calgary is a cow-town. So options are limited at any restaurants. I really wanted my sister to have Alberta beef so I started to do my research. I was quite surprised to find out that Modern has 2 vegetarian dishes (online showed 3). Most restaurants here either served 1 or none vegetarian options. My friend ordered the mushroom risotto and she said it was actually very delicious. We also got complementary truffle popcorn and they were delicious but the story just ended here. My two sisters and I shared the 40oz Tomahawk Steak. We are not big eaters so the steak was enough for 3 of us. The dish was very Instagramable. However, the steak was not wow. The steak was juicy but it was very chewy. The cut wasn't great I guess. I was very disappointed in the quality of the meat. It was cooked the way we wanted (medium rare). However, there wasn't much marbling in the steak itself. Our reservation was at 4 pm and we finished our dinner and left just slightly after 5:30. We noticed that the restaurant was still pretty empty at that time. I guess their steak quality has gone downhill a lot. It is no longer as popular as it once used to be. Or maybe the Stephen Ave location would have been better. We came on a Sunday and they have the $99 Tomahawk special for 2. No where on the menu mentions about the Tomahawk special. Also, they don't mention about the deal when you sit down. However, their system is not automatic and it requires manual override. The server gave me the bill charging regular price and I let him know right away to fix it. He was very apologetic. But I think to make things easier, they should think about having it automatically take in the discount based on day of the week, special or promotion and etc. I am not sure if they did it on purpose and hoping that their customers will pay the full price regardless if there is a promotion or not? read more

For our last meal on this initial trip to Calgary, we taxied over to Kensington to Modern Steak. On entering, I was very surprised with the design and decor of Modern Steak. It seemed more Las Vegas than Calgary, and I walked downstairs with some trepidation. However, after one look at that fantastic menu and all its sumptuous offerings, I was willing to ignore the glitz and glam of the room. (I hate Las Vegas and its ersatz bling) Our waiter Goerge guided us through the extensive menu, and we settled on Caesar Salad, two steaks, Parmesan fries, lobster mac and cheese, and a baked potato the size of Shaquille's left foot. Service was warm and professional, and the manager Johnny stopped by often to make sure we were happy. I saw Johnny tending to the care of all the patrons this evening. That's great restaurant management. To end the evening we ordered Baked Alaska for dessert, indulgent and classically delicious. Ooh la la. What a meal! We staggered upstairs, so full that I couldn't even go out for a nightcap. I slept well. read more

It was an awesome meal. Highly recommended if you are in search for a good & unique steakhouse in Calgry. One big different between modern Steak and other steakhouse is their ethical approach to their ingredients. All their beef can trace back to a specific ranch, with clearly layout on how they grow. Pretty cool to learn those, and make you appreciated what you are eating. Good cocktail too! read more

I initially gave this place a 5. My sister called in the next day, because they were closed. She told them she got food poisoning from their fish. Her and I shared everything else, the only thing I didn't try was her fish. She called, left a voicemail, and they called her back the next day, and said sorry, they said they checked with the kitchen and everything was good...which makes absolutely no sense. If they didn't even know which customer she was. How could they have known EXACTLY WHICH plate of rainbow trout it was, and claim that it was fine? They said sorry over the phone, and that everything seemed to be good in the kitchen (from two nights before, which is absurd). They offered her no compensation, no gift card, no complimentary meal, no nothing. Just a sorry and hung up. It's a shame because I initially gave this place a five. But definitely a one now because of that. To think they're a restaurant chain that has a modern steak, modern burger, and a modern ocean, and they can't even offer any kind of compensation for my sister being sick all night. Horrible service. read more

Went to the Stephen avenue location at lunch the other day - it was really easy to get a reservation on open table! I liked the Stephen ave location it was nicely decorated and the staff were nice. Parking was a pain though especially during the week so I would plan for a bit of time to find a spot that's not ridiculously expensive. I got the ribeye steak ($39) and my friend got the flat iron steak (29$). It comes with a side of fries and a small salad. The ribeye was more fatty than the flat iron steak that was the main difference and slightly bigger. I thought it was too fatty to be honest - there were bites that were just pure fat haha Overall both my friend and I thought that everything was super salty - the meat and the fries - so much so that we felt our lips burning and had to eat more salad haha I like meat so obviously I liked my steak overall however I would probably not go back anytime soon given the price and the ability to get the same awesome meat experience in other places. read more

One of our favourite things to do when we travel is splurge on an expensive steak dinner with a good bottle of wine. Somehow it lead us to modern steak. We ordered two drinks, a bottle of wine, two caesar salads, a filet grass fed steak, ribeye steak and three sides, and creme brûlée. For the final price tag of $250. The sides were about the best part. We got the beets and horseradish, fully loaded potatoes, and garlic mushrooms which all were very tasty. Honestly the ribeye steak had so much fat on it, you ate maybe ate 1/4 of it. The filet grass fed sirloin was recommended by the server being a more lean cut for women so that's what I choose. It was so burnt on the outside you had to cut the entire outside of the steak off. No we didn't complain when they asked us how things were. Date nights are so happy and fun for us so we just ate what we were given but honestly we wouldn't go back again. The sever was decently friendly but he checked on us maybe for two hours three times. We tried to start a convo and he walked alway answering us which we felt like he didn't care at all. We tipped and paid our bill and left. We also felt like it was super unprofessional of the women manager or supervisor to be telling the bartenders right behind the curtain about how they need to be clearing wine glasses faster like this table right here and she came over and grabbed our wine glasses and said she'd be taking these when we were waiting for our wine to be brought to us. As we heard her giving the bartenders heck. We would not recommended this place to anyone. For the price you pay you may as well check out the keg for better quality service and food for cheaper. Don't spend your expensive date night here. read more

A vegetarian at a steak house!! Haha. I had two options in the whole menu (which is completely fine) as my friend and her sisters shared a steak dinner. I got the mushroom risotto, which was actually quite delicious! The washrooms are behind the hostess area, which I thought was a bit awkward because washroom goers have to go in and out of the hostess' way. Our server was really nice! He was professional and made sure that we were having a good time. This is a great place to go to if you eat steak! read more

Our server was lovely, attentive and friendly. The food was divine and a nice, high end treat for us. We now know that the restaurant has a "no substitution policy" and you can't change anything out on the menu unless it's an allergy. This was unexpected, esp someone wanted mixed veg for beans and I wasn't allowed. The manager had to get involved to explain their policy. Allergies are accommodated, but not preferences because they "lost a lot of money and don't do this because the other customers complain the food isn't good with subs." You can't split the bill with 10 people either. This needed up with some incorrect math and someone picking to the remainder. read more

There were some guests coming from the USA, and as a group activity, the plan was to try a steak dinner as they needed to experience Alberta beef! After having heard some great reviews about Modern Steak, I was excited to try out this restaurant. Atmosphere: 4.5/5 Located in the kensington area, which is one of my favorite parts of Calgary. However, parking can be a little difficult to find. The restaurant itself has a very unique and modern decor; interesting and efficient use of the multi-level space which included a kitchen at the top, then the main floor, then a bar floor with in-house DJ, and a bottom dining level. Interesting art and use of mirrors which made the place appear hip - a nice change for a steakhouse! It was a bit dark where we were seated and the only thing was that the music got louder as the night went on so it became harder to have a conversation within our group. Otherwise I really liked the unique atmosphere! Food: 4.5/5 All of the beef is local to Alberta, and I love that there is a detailed explanation of the menu including where each item came from and the tenderness / flavour index for each type of cut. I ended up getting the 6oz flat iron medium-rare, which was extremely delicious- Tender yet flavourful. I also like that the sides are easily shared amongst the table so we ended up trying multiple items which was great. Portion sizes for the sides are quite generous. I would highly recommend the steak here! Service: 4/5 Good explanation of the menu items and very attentive to our group Price: 3/5 On the higher side but to be expected Overall: 4.5/5 I loved this restaurant - mostly for its unique decor and very delicious steak!! Apparently, it was 10th place in the new category of the 2016 best restaurant awards and definitely lived up to my expectations. Steak can be a bit $ but I would definitely return again for a nice dinner. read more

This review is for Modern Ocean on Stephen ave (it's newer and just not coming up - same company different menu). Came here with a group of 8; the service was a bit slower than expected . Took a while to get our drinks and we had to get our waitresses attention to order more. However, the food was phenomenal. To start we shared the: -crispy wonton prawns (could have these everyday a must order - fries pei mussels (chorizo & tomato), has a kick and was delicious - ahi tuna tartare : very good Favourite was the wonton prawns. For my main I ordered the ORA King Salmon . The salmon just melted in your mouth ; so full of flavour. Others at the table had the lobster fettuccini which they said was really good. For dessert I had the cheesecake. This is probably the smallest portion size of cheesecake I've ever seen and there is no crust. Very tasty but I wouldn't order again for price vs size. If you are a seafood lover (with deeper pockets this place is more expensive) this is a must try. read more

We were staying at the Hyatt hotel downtown and this was the new location on Stephen avenue. Connected to the hyatt this was our number one pick out of 4 steakhouses ( Saltik, Ruth's, Charcut and this one ) ordered some oysters to start .. really good ! Lots of fresh horseradish, champagne red vinegar mignonette yummy thing ) then I had the 14 oz wagyu rib eye and my husband had the pound of king crab. It's a seasoned your own plate kind of thing .. 3 kind of salt... regular, pink Himalayan's and black smoked maybe !? Kinda salt. I do not know what the black salt was but I emptied the whole thing never mind the truffled popcorn when you sit down . I was SO upset when the waiter took my bowl away when there was ONE popcorn left ! sprinkle that shit with the black salt and your heading to heaven/ hell . You HAVE to order the baked potatoes as a side . It's. HUGE! I mean at least to feed 3 people ( even tho I destroy that thing with a tiny help from my husband ) but the creamed Swiss chard was underwhelming... even with a crap load of that black Smokey salt... my steak was perfectly cooked . ... delicious ... I jumped in there like it was my last meal and damn .... So juicy so tasty ( needed a few sprinkle of that black salt but I think I was just hooked on it lol) my husband's king crab was ok . Juicy and tasty but ( we just came from tofino so we know it's not going to be that fresh lol) it did tasted a few days old . Anyways! We did ordered a few drinks ( tasty!!) and a bottle of wine.Chocolate mousse and the 40 years old Taylor and ice wine was exquisite read more

Went to the new location on Stephen Avenue. Second day open so there is time that reviews will lead them to figuring things out! The good: Service was great. Kind. Attentive. Young vibe but overall great. The renos were nice. Kinda 'club' looking. Definitely getting the 'Modern Feel'. Menu: ok. Typical. Nothing really out of the ordinary or seemingly special. Ceaser salad. Cobbs. Burgers. Pizza. Steak obviously. Misses: Ceaser salad with steak or chicken is a new high of $27. It was the topic for a few minutes. I actually thought it must be an amazing ceaser and an amazing piece of steak. It was also called 'the big salad' and I was hungry so lets go....I wish i took a picture of it but I ate it too fast. It was a regular size salad by all accounts. Not any more special or less special than 7.99 at Sunterra. Romaine. Some parm. Some croutons. The steak was ok. It wasn't the best piece. Prob a 6 ounce sirloin. Sadly worth $27 seems like a big miss. Wine list for a glass was small but enough choices. A $9 glass of Pinot Gris seemed reasonable price but I think its it was 4 ounces. It certainly wasn't 5. So lunch: are you with me. 1 ceaser salad 2 glasses of wine. I mean the first was so tiny i barely tasted it. Clearly Im a glutton for punishment and an idiot. 18%tip cause she was nice and attentive. Are you still with me. $56 dollar lunch. Yeow! read more

Totally overpriced considering the amount of food you get. Food is not that great either. My husband's dish was supposed to be fish with asparagus and corn, the price of this dish is $50. It came with a very small piece of fish and some very small pieces of asparagus. Obviously he was still hungry after. Absolutely not worth it. Service wasn't great either read more

Had the grilled octopus and 14oz modern steak ribeye and was severely disappointed on both counts The octopus dish was bland and had no flavour beyond tomato paste? It was gross The steak was a joke. It was super thin and over cooked. Tough not to overcook based on how thin it was. The waitress didn't give a shit. When she asked and I told her she just shrugged and carried on. Had high hopes for this one and was VERY disappointed. You would think a 64 dollar steak would at least rise to truck stop level standards. Unfortunately it was a VERY special occasion for my guest and I and we came here based on recommendations from a friend. We didn't let the poor food and service spoil the occasion, but it certainly didn't add anything There was 2 bright spots: 1) the wine list was incredible. Especially the red wine list. They really did their homework and knocked this out of the park 2) the ambiance was breath taking. They did an excellent job of creating a remarkable environment that you wouldn't expect from this neighbourhood. It's unfortunate the food and service didn't match. Good spot to drink. Shitty spot to eat read more

I'm not sure what's going on with the reviews so far for Modern Steak; Nathaniel says this is the "best steakhouse in Calgary", but apparently that's only worth 2 stars to him. And Christine seems to have meant to leave a review for Montana's on Sarcee Tr, so good job there... But honestly, this place way exceeded my expectations! I got the TravelZoo voucher (which is a very good deal btw, you should too!), and showed up with my gf for an early Valentines Date. I made reservations beforehand, and with it requested some bubbly served right off the bat without our asking. We arrived and were seated right away by an excitable your lady. When our waitress, Natasha, arrived she was very nice and personable and explained the menu for us, which was quite helpful. Shortly after that our bubbly arrived, right on schedule. Well done. Also the truffle oil drizzled popcorn, which was dangerously good! (Don't listen the Nathaniel on that one either.) We ordered a couple Oysters on the Half Shell and the Waygu Sliders to start. My gf isn't so sure about sea crustaceans, but the oysters were so tender and beautifully garnished that she had no problem. The sliders (which feature a brioche bun, btw) were also delicious, and left us wanting more. They were pretty cute too. For the mains my gf got the Brant Lake Waygu NY Striploin, while I got the Heritage Natural Angus Ribeye 4 Week Dry Aged, and for sides we chose the Decadent Mashed Potatoes and Asparagus Parmesan with Sunny Side Egg. Both steaks were astounding! They were cooked to perfection (medium rare, mine tending slightly rarer), with the fatty bits literally melting in our mouths. They were served with a few cooked garlic cloves on the side, which we were encouraged to use as a paste with our steaks, a nice touch. We tried each others steaks, and there was an appreciable difference in taste between them. I found hers to have a delicious, classic NY taste, while mine had a more interesting flavour profile, fuller somehow. We loved them both, and preferred our own. I can honestly say I don't think I've had better steak, anywhere. The sides also impressed. The rich, buttery mash also had a truffle hint to it, so good. The asparagus came with an ever so delicate sunny side egg on it, which dissolved upon touching it, but not before. The effect was coating all the asparagus and parmesan flakes (which were large and obviously fresh) in the yolk. These were very good, although a few of the thicker ends could have been cooked a little more, as a few were just slightly tough. For dessert we got the Creme Brullee, which was also delicious. (Do I detect a pattern?) It was about room temp, with a perfect "cavity glass" on top of caramelized sugar that you had to break to get at the decadent custard inside. As for service, we were quite impressed. Our waitress was very personable, and knowledgeable. She seemed to know the menu well, and shared what she liked on it. Before the mains she came by with our choice of steak knives, which was a nice little touch. This place is only a few months old as of this writing, so perhaps the previous reviewers experienced a staff that hadn't gotten it down yet, which is understandable. But know that if you get Natasha, you'll be happy. The whole evening we were commenting on how pleasing to the eye the while place was. It's an interesting layout encompassing a 4 or 5 split level with an open area in the middle in which you can see from top to bottom. Into this they've painted everything flat black and added incredibly beautiful (and modern looking) fixtures and chandeliers. Seriously, the designer of this space had a vision, and they nailed it; it's a joy to behold. The music, on the other hand, was not so dialed in. It was... eclectic. Ranging from techno to Johnny Cash to Coolio, and almost everything a remix version, the music was a little obnoxious at times. This is the 2nd of our two complaints (the first one being the asparagus ends), neither of which seriously detract from the magnificence of the entire night! Do yourself a favour; pick a special night and treat yourself. It's so worth it. read more

While searching for a great spot for a steak, close to our hotel, during an overnighter in Calgary we came across Modern Steak. Thank god! This place is amazing! So it's definitely a steakhouse, but with a much more of a contemporary feel. The inside isn't nearly as dark and ominous as your local Keg. It's a bright, open feel with great tunes and (OMG!!) windows. We got a seat on the roof top patio on a gorgeous Sunday evening and began. The menu is a sprawling cow bonanza with an obvious emphasis on the moo, but there is also a great selection of seafood and some vegetarian options as well. The bovine selection is as detailed and vast as you will ever see. Not only a comprehensive list of all the cuts they offer but it also lists all the local farms that each piece comes from. A touch I absolutely loved! They also make it a point of listing which cuts are exclusive to their restaurant! I ring up an exclusive 22 oz T-Bone from a farm just outside of Calgary and began my impatient wait. Good thing we brought wine (25 dollar corkage which is extremely reasonable for a high end place) My gf ordered a full on seafood extravaganza with fresh pasta they make to order. A quick appetizer you need to try whilst here are the Wagyu dumplings. These are just gold! Picture the best Asian pot sticker you've ever had, then instead of shady pork sub in perfect Wagyu beef with a supple ponzu dipping sauce, simply brilliant. This steak shows up and my lord it is a vision of meaty heaven! Perfect rare cook, great grill marks, and very simply seasoned with what a steak should...salt, pepper, maybe a little oil. My lady's seafood pasta probably put a dent in some poor fish farm off the coast. Fresh clams, scallops, mussels, crab, and white fish. Again, the freshest of pasta in a subtle marinara. If I didn't have to tackle a steak the size of a hubcap I would've had tried more. My steak...perfection. All those hours the farmers spent massaging these cows, and those late night hoof rubs paid off in full. Just melt in you mouth great steak. This is a fresh interesting take on the modern steakhouse. It's a testament to the fact you don't need to have lighting that would only be seen in the final scene of a Rob Zombie movie, you can actually see another table beside you...GASP! Giant portions, great service, reasonable corkage, and amazing food. Do yourself a favour... Cheers Andy read more

Visiting a place that's great for steak and keeps me as a vegetarian happy had been a challenge in life for my red meat lovin man and I. Often I get expensive and forgettable food but he's happy. At modern steak they actually thought about people like me. I had a delightful beet salad and quinoa lasagna. Both are innovative and inspired. Hubs got his Wagu steak and angry prawns and almost licked the plate clean. The only thing I found lacking was dessert. I was not a fan of the chocolate cake item. Hubs liked the baked alaska, which I found gorgeous but I'm not a fan of meringue or lemon. You smell truffle walking in there which I love and the bowl of truffle popcorn they give you at the start is wonderful. I wish I could have had more... Next time. read more

This review is for the newly opened Southport RD location. My wife, two girls, my father and I all went out for my birthday. We came in for their Tomahawk Sunday night special and was not disappointed. It was also my birthday and they even had a birthday card waiting for me at the table signed by the staff. What a nice touch! We had George for our server and he was excellent. We loved this place! Making reservations online was a breeze and we were treated like royalty as soon as we arrived. They asked if it was a special occasion and we said it was just a date night. They seated us downstairs in the back and we had the whole back portion to ourselves. The restaurant was busy but where we were seated in the back, we were able to talk and it was a nice touch being tucked into the private area. Very romantic. For starters we ordered Cheese fondue and a couple old fashions. We ordered steak for each of us as well as three sides so we could share. It was allot of food. My FAV was the lobster macaroni. Sooooo good. All the food was fantastic and the steaks were perfect. Our server was so amazing and she was quite attentive all night. She was always around for drink refills and questions about the menu. Very friendly. Ambiance and service is fabulous. It is pricey but worth the cost. Will definitely go back again and again. An amazing place to celebrate any occasion or just a nice night out. read more

We went for a corporate party and they gave us this amazing semi-private room. The service was as top notch as it could get and the steaks? Well words really don't touch the amazing experience choosing and devouring the incredible beef that was presented to us. My mouth is watering just thinking about them! We were really looking forward to returning for our 21st anniversary, but COVID19 has put the kibosh on that for now... Looking forward to trying their M Burger pickup service with the whole family now instead. Support local, support Modern Steak! read more

The place speaks for its name "Modern", My phone does need flash to capture the place nicely however I respect some guest who I didn't see anyone on their phone but myself. It was a last minute reservation and there was not a lot of people. You'll get in-love with the ambience, Very chic, you won't expect the place to have a romantic feel inside as it doest not please me the outside. The saying is true, never judge a book by its cover. I had a Lychee cocktails, Virgin Mojito for my boy(he can't-have alcohol yet) Crab in a jar and meatballs for 2 as are our intro, we had Sirloin steak and baked , Rib eye wet aged wagyu, and mashed and buttered jumbo prawns. All in all experience was excellent! Didn't have rooms for dessert anymore, so it was skipped. Bravo to our server! He did his job so excellently! A thanksgiving worth it all. read more

We had the tomahawk dry aged rib eye for two, with mashed potatoes and asparagus. We also had a Tuscan red wine as a pairing. The steak was excellent and the mashed potatoes very delicious. First time here.visited with visitors from USA. What a great place to experience Alberta beef for them [and for myself!] I had already eaten a snack before coming here.even so, I thought the food and experience was amazing. Walking in, you are at the top of the staircase, which you are supposed to descend.you oversee the entire restaurant almost and it's a magnificent view.I like the atmosphere and the dimming of the lights.I like the wall and halo lighting. Took a picture with it. The atmosphere is definitely pleasing.and can be a place for many classy Occasions or just going out in general. The music was playing partway through when we entered.only when we were sitting did we realize that it was a live DJ figuring out the music.which is always great! Great selection of salt, great selection of cuts of meat, great selection of vegetables. I had a piece of food from a couple of friends got the menu has a large variety of things to choose from.which is amazing that they have brussels sprouts and asparagus. I absolutely love vegetables made the way they made it! The beef was amazing as expected.definitely recommend it! Love how they make it the way you ask them to make it. I know the guests from USA were happy they visited. Definitely will be coming here again! read more

I booked a reservation at this location as we were celebrating our 51st Wedding Anniversary. We were greeted by the manager when we arrived and promptly seated us at our reserved table. Nice touch that there was a card placed on the table wishing us a Happy Anniversary . Our server was exceptionally attentive and amazing, one of the best ever that we have encountered. The manager as well checked in a couple of times with us to make sure that we were enjoying our meal. The steaks were amazing and cooked to perfection. All staff members provided exceptional service however, M. our server was one of the best servers that we have had the privilege to have encountered. In short she is amazing! We will definitely return to this location and request to be seated in her area as amazing people like her are rare. The manager of this location J. made a point to stop and chat a couple of times. I grew up in the neighborhood, we have lived in Vancouver for the 20+ years and it is such a delight to find this gem in my old neighborhood, unfortunately we now live in the far south of Calgary but will be returning. Hats off to the staff in this location - thank you. read more

Ate here while in downtown Calgary, the steak was fabulous, flavorful and the veggies were perfect. Wasn't that busy due to Good Friday so we got in quick with no wait. They have a roof top bar as well and inclosed, but I did not go up. They are not a high turnaround restaurant so you will be there for about an hour or so which works out fine, watched some of the hockey game and relaxed. read more

My boyfriend and I went to Modern Steakhouse during Big Taste YYC 2017 and the food was great! The appetizer, prawn bong, was interesting and the prawn was cooked to perfection! In regards to the Brant Lake Wagyu entree, while the steak was wonderful, it did not meet my expectations. To really get a good idea on the quality of Modern's steak, it would be better to go another time. The frites, however, were crispy and delicious as always! Lastly, the dessert was phenomenal! It was a chocolate mousse cake that was rich and decadent, but not overly sweet. I really hope that it will be on their dessert menu as a regular! read more

We went here for dinner. In a nutshell, it was terrible. The mixed drinks were decent, the service was excellent. However, the food was really bad. Like really, really, bad. Ambiance: What the heck?! I like the change in vibe from the Kensington neighborhood spots but WOW the playlist and music level was insane. They were blasting cheap clubbing music like 50-cent and that Fresh Prince of Bel Air song...not a relaxing or adult environment in which to enjoy an expensive steak. It felt like a wannabe Los Angeles nightclub that serves steak. Very bizarre. Food: If you want an amazing steak in Calgary, this is not the place to go. Grass-fed beef is not tender or very flavorful because it's grass fed. They serve all grass-fed beef and yes it's sustainable, but it doesn't make for a great steak dinner out. I ordered the New York Strip and my date ordered the Rib Eye. The New York was charred completely on the outside and very tough and unflavorful. The charred exterior affected the overall taste of the meat and I couldn't even taste the flavor of the interior. The rib eye steak was very tough and again, not very flavorful. Both were ordered medium-rare, but came to us medium. The worst part of the meal was our appetizer: Oysters. We ordered a dozen West Coast oysters (Miyagi) because we are oyster connoisseurs. They came to the table and we could smell the stink on them immediately. The waitress said that West Coast oysters smell fishy naturally. I assure you, fresh raw oysters NEVER smell fishy or rank. We each ate two of them without the toppings to make sure they were "ok" and they tasted rotten like sewage. Again, this is NOT normal for FRESH oysters. We complained and the waitress kindly took them back and off our bill. (Thank you to the good service). When we got home after dinner, we started feeling ill about 4 hours later and spent the remainder of the evening vomiting in the bathroom. Our stomachs were in knots and we felt nauseous and sick. We called the owner the next day and he remembered the incident and agreed that the oysters smelled bad. He again told us that the oysters were supposed to be "fishy", which is not correct. He apologized kindly, but offered nothing in return for our meal. We spent $150 plus tip for our meal that night and will never be back in there again. Don't go here. read more

The hotel front desk recommended the Modern, and I'm glad they did. Service was excellent as was the food. The place was busy and everyone seemed to be enjoying their evening. read more

First time visiting Calgary. Was looking for a place to eat steak. Found this place which serves Wagyu beef. Definitely worth it. Price was reasonable and service was excellent. The steak was well done and portion is just right. We got a baked Alaska, definitely worth a try. read more

We reserved this table couple of weeks ago for our brother in law's birthday and requested a high chair. We did write it in the comments but we didn't know it was not a kid friendly restaurant. It was very annoying as we made this request and they didn't reply to us or tell us they are not kid friendly. We came in with our 20 month old and then they told us they don't have high chairs. Our meal was basically ruined from that moment as she had to sit on my lap the whole time. I'm not angry that it's not a kid friendly restaurant, I'm angry because they never told us when we made the request weeks ago. They were also very unapologetic about the whole a situation. On top of all of this, the food was very mediocre. For the money you're paying , you can can even get a better steak at The Keg, do not recommend this restaurant at all. Also, this is my second time there and it's because the first time we went I didn't remember much as it was very unmemorable. All I remembered was the steak was meh. But tonight was not my choice. But I will remember for next time to remind others not to come here. ON TOP OF ALL OF THIS, the service was sub par. My whole family was not impressed. He was not attentive at all, poor at explaining and unenthusiastic. Overall, terrible experience. read more
