It is impossible to walk in this shop, and leave with just what you went in for. Thanks to the great deals they have, it only makes sense to pick up some gloves, boots, or whatever deals jump out at you. This is a proper motorcycle shop, not a dealership. Their team has the experience to provide you with the best information to make a purchasing choice. Highly Overpriced for no reason, but like I always say, go see for yourself. The salesmen were very pushy as well and didn't seem very knowledgable about motorcycle gear. One of the salesmen (it's strange for a motorcycle shop to even have salesmen in the first place) asked why I was looking for a helmet in the same brand. I told him that the particular brand fit my head nicely, plus it has DOT and SNELL approved safety ratings. And yet, this salesman proceeded to coerce me into buying the more expensive helmet anyway. Right before I left, I was told that my head was too wide and it would be too hard to find a helmet. Overall, you're probably better off going to e-commerce route and shopping at FortNine.ca. Check it out. They've got much better prices and a huge array of products to choose from. read more

DISHONEST people. I am utterly disgusted at the terrible work done. My bike broke down 6 times which was frightening and dangerous. Not only could I not ride my bike (that I purchased from them) for 3 months because they did not complete the work properly, I had to go through the Better Business Burreau. Still the work they did, was horrible and they put on an old used clutch handle without telling me thinking I would not notice. To finish it off, they left handprints and knocked off my hand warmer. I took a motorcycle course in March 2019. Before starting it, my coworker mentioned that if I'm looking for gear, I should try Modern Motorcycling as they geared him up for cheap. I went into the shop and was greeted by some interesting characters. Like with most businesses, the staff aren't robots programmed to be ever-smiling, pleasant cheerleaders. They're real people who have bad days, who have introverted personalities, who might not mesh with you because they're a little gruff and stubborn and you want an experience where staff are extremely helpful and go out of their way for you. Modern Motorcycling is staffed by a bunch of guys. That did make me nervous walking in as a woman with no motorcycling experience. I've worked with cars my whole life but not motorcycles- it's not the same and I was out of my element. I was helped out right away. I never remember their names but I can picture all of them individually... One of the guys is tall and monotone, he's very experienced and can seem judgemental when he talks to you. If you can get through the lack of expression and meet him where his passion is, all he wants to do is help you find what you need. He helped me find women's riding groups, proper riding pants for the type of riding I'd be doing, proper riding boots that suited my ride-and-walk lifestyle (my bike was my daily and I needed shoes that would be good on the bike and walking around malls and city streets). He's all about safety and experience- both he and his girlfriend are avid track and street riders and he really wants the best for any and all genders that walk into the shop. The owner (I believe) is an energetic, jolly guy who is always busy but seems to want to do what's best for you. Where other people had trouble communicating with him, he called me to let me know my bike wouldn't be ready till the next day and always gave me incredible deals on my gear and services. He explained to me why warranty books are important, what kind of services are important, how often to take care of my bike based on how much I was riding. Every time I go in he's preoccupied but the shop is never disorganized because of it. There is an asian man who works in the front and he is probably the friendliest-looking one there. I'd recommend seeking him out if you want to find someone in the store who is most approachable! He's a good balance for the rest of the shop and he's very knowledgeable. The shop mechanics are gruff. They aren't meant to be in the storefront. I know lots of mechanics from over the years and I'd say three-quarters of them are traditional introverts with questionable people skills. I know a few of the Modern Motorcycling mechanics by name (but not all) and every time I stop in it's a short, curt smile and a nod of the head. The one time I got to talk to my mechanic he seemed like he wanted to be anywhere other than talking to me, but when we found a few things in common he really opened up and ever since he's been a little gentler. They grind back there and I have a feeling that in the busy season they're sometimes overwhelmed. I'm not saying that mechanics and auto shops and motorcycle service shops should be gruff and rough and hard to approach. This business has it's pros and cons. The pros are the amazing prices on gear and (in my opinion) the MUCH CHEAPER than dealership services. The cons are the personalities in the shop and perhaps the communication (based on other people's reviews). I had a 2018 Suzuki GSX 250R. Most of the guys in the shop don't seem to ride sports bikes but they still gave me the time of day and any jokes they made at my expense were made after we'd built rapport. I trust these guys a lot and I've sent my friends here numerous times (my boyfriend bought his helmet here for a drift event at Mission Raceway and the guys talked cars for a good twenty minutes.) If you're looking for gear I recommend trying this place. I recommend going in with an idea of what you're looking for (especially prices, so you can see the amazing difference when they give you bundle deals and your tab is $100 or so less than you expected). I recommend going in expecting a good experience and making your own opinion about their personalities (because hey, everyone is different and we all get along differently). But do know that, based on other people's reviews, it's probably a good idea to be very concise with the front staff when you're getting your bike serviced here. While I never had any problems at all there is documented issues from other Yelp users and it might save you a lot of trouble to take your bike to a dealership. It wont save you money, but the experience will be more seamless and I know that matters. read more

I have been going to modern motorcycling for over 10 years they've always seem to be fair in dealing with me I wanted to have some tires put on my motorcycle and they had certain opinions with regards to what tires should've gone on there and whether or not I should've bought them from them I wish that they had been less aggressive in their suggestion that I should've bought from them beyond that Zack the mechanic who worked on my motorbike did a great job was very thorough and friendly to work with read more

1978 Suzuki GS750 I've been having my vintage bike serviced at Modern Motorcycling for about 6 years now. Aaron and his team absolutely know their stuff. As with all shops dealing with seasonal workload my experiences with them have varied, most due exactly to that fact and sheer demand, but quality and price-wise both have remained respectably high. When I say 'varied' I don't mean good or bad, per se. I've had many great experiences with them, and I've had a few experiences that could have been easier but got there in the end and were overall good. I give these guys 5-stars overall. Now the details: Service-wise they have always, always done a great job for me. Zack really loves bikes (especially of the Suzuki flavour) and really does a fantastic job with everything from overall safety/full inspection, to annual maintenance/checks right through to suggestions on upgrades and betterment. All of which I've engaged him with and have never been happier. He even suggested and provided a new master brake cylinder and lever, all of which he installed in time, super professionally, and to quote. Whenever I've had something that doesn't seem quite right, he bends over backwards to make it right, even if I may be overthinking things or it's an obvious or simple fix right through to something that can be dialled in better after a few km's. Take your bike to MM and be happy when Zack is working on it. Keep on doing what you're doing Zack, legend my dude. Yes the team are some characters (I personally appreciate that - some my not). People here have complained about some of them, but I feel most of those complaints aren't really accurate or warranted overall. Building rapport with your mechanic is part of the process IMHO, and pondering on just how many issues and problems they are faced with from paying customers on a daily basis (purely mechanical issues), I can see how that could filter through to the uninitiated through initial conversations or service engagement. Both Aaron and his old man upstairs always sort me out with what I need, provide amazing recommendations, options, suggestions at great prices and I always have a laugh and hear a story through the process. Furthermore, they do bend over backwards to help you when you need it. I was caught out of the area with a broken accelerator cable at close to 6pm on a Saturday, and after calling Aaron who was just closing up the shop he offered to come and pick my bike up that night, taking it back to the shop and they had it up and running by the next business day. Yes I paid for the tow. Yes I was happy to... to get my bike off the street and into the hands of their team who I trust. On the flip-side, yes I have had a couple of things happen - but when they do, they are sorted out 100% and in general I'm made to feel well looked after and confident in the results. Great work Aaron and the entire team! Zack you da man, absolutely amazing 5-start work all around. Spiro you do killer amazing work, my old pitted forks are practically brand new due to your artisan workmanship. Ive been going to Modern for 40 years,and do my own service. Its the best place for enthusiasts,but if you dont know bikes it can be a challenging experience. Ignorance is not tolerated well,but if you know what youre talking about,you will be treated with respect. Its the best place to buy tires in the lower mainland. I've never gone in to the shop because the person Who answered the phone was so condescending, abrupt and totally useless for information that I don't really need to know anything further. I phoned to inquire if they carried the Icon line. Not only did the person on the other end not answer my question, he started rambling on about how Vancouver is a rainy city and I needed to focus on learning to ride before anything else. Um, what?? I finally had to hang up on him because if I tried to get a word in he'd talk right over me. It was bizarre. In talking to some girlfriends, I discovered that it's not unusual for women to not get treated well at this shop. read more

Chaotic and rude. I phoned in the morning to get a dyno so I can see if my jetting was off. The guy on the phone told me, "yeah just come down between 10 and 430 no appointment necessary." I get down there at 1pm. An older man asks me if I need help - told him I phoned earlier about a dyno - he asks what year, make and model - I start telling him and he cuts me off, then he just snaps back saying - "I don't have time for that today". Just writes me off and basically implies I'm wasting his time and that the shop is too busy (selling gear) to deal with me. Tells me to come back sometime next week. Doesn't ask to book me in or anything. I reminded him that I phoned earlier and was told to come down. He just barked back that he can't control when the rush comes in. (It's called a schedule dude - every business has one) I never had issues with the other people there - last fall I spent $600 there in gear and I have brought friends there to shop too. I know I was only in for a $70 dyno but loyalty doesn't seem to pay off there. I've never had work done there beyond a tire change (which I later found was off balance) - whoever the crusty old guy was turned me off that place for good. Don't need people like that working on my bike - if they treat people like crap - think about how little they would care about your bike. It looks like a sh!t show in there because it is a sh!t show. A little organization, process and a lesson in customer relations would solve their chaos issues. read more

Dishonest people. I had the worst experience and they do not stand by their service. They do bad work and will over charge you. They pretend to give you a good deal and lots of discounts. When I compared prices to other places, it's the same. These guys will take as much money from you as they can and then leave you with a broken bike. Went in for a price on the new rear tire. $75 - fair price, labour quoted at $30 if I take the tire off and bring it in. Sounds reasonable, right? Wrong. I brought the bike in, thinking it won't cost much more to have the tire bolted off an on. They even replaced my half-year old tube for a "heavy-duty" tube (no, I ask for it; neither did I get the old one back, which was less than half a year old), and the total labour and the tire + fees ran $211.66. That is for just one tire. I also got flamed for casually mentioned I ordered a replacement peg online that didn't fit ("SERVES YOU RIGHT!!! YOU DONT WANT TO SUPPORT CANADIAN BUSINESS EH????"). I'm sure a lot of horse breeders got pissed when cars were invented, but is the consumer really to blame? Have you guys been more reasonable and less sneaky, I'd be less hesitant to spend my money with a Canadian business. If you want to be like that, I guess that's fine too. Now I'll be doing my repairs on my own as much as I can, with YouTube and a 6-pack; and will go to the Rising Sun for anything else. At least they'd consult me before jacking up my bill with items I have no need for. read more

First off, ANY positive rating has got to be from employees or friends trying to make their low standards of customer seem even remotely adequate. This place is a JOKE. i called and said i have a list of parts i need. (I even did the hard work and looked up the part numbers myself.) So i emailed the list over and waited. 4 days later i called again to check status. (In stock or not) haven't even looked at the list yet. No problem i say. I work in the industry so know how it can get busy. Call 2 days later. Still haven't even looked. I said I gave you guys part numbers. It takes a week to punch a few keys and make a phone call? I went in there with cash in my pocket wanted to buy a new bike. Give the old man there my best offer and show them I was serious I show them my cash. Old man got piss off told me to get out. Seriously? I'm guessing there's no profit in cash sale? I was told by others that this shop likes to add charges to the bill without telling their customers. Did they even touch my bike? Dropped over $1k in work on my bike (older kawasaki) to get it running. The only thing I _know_ they did was change the battery. Everything else, maybe they did? They documented it terribly on the work order. They said they cleaned the carbs and cleaned out the tank, but who the hell knows because a few months later I took my bike to another shop and they were like, "you need to clean these carbs!" also "your gas tank smells like bad gas!". Also dumb junk like: the air intake screws were completely out of whack. If they did ANY work on the bike, wouldn't they have adjusted those? Wish I had noticed all this stuff sooner. Also bought a helmet from them and pieces of it are literally falling off. I bought another helmet for my girlfriend at the same time, hers is good. So not everything they sell is a piece of shit, but they definitely have some crap in stock. Maybe they do good work, and just do a bad job of documenting it. It's also reasonably likely that they are disorganized, scammy, and ripped me off. read more

Pro: Best prices, best advice Con: Have to wait sometimes (or all the time?) because they are helping others. I needed a motorcycle helmet, and all I really wanted to do was to find a fit in a shop and buy it online (as I heard online prices are always better). My friend who said he's been to all the shops around town and modern has the best price, so this was the first shop I went to. They got Arai, Shoei, HJC, and Joe Rocket and a few other I really didn't care about. Because I also wanted to try on other brands I went to other shops to try on Scorpion and AGV. In the end I decided to go with Shoei Qwest, which they carried. Comparing their price with online price, their price was actually cheaper (unless you happen to find the helmet you want online currently in a clearance sale, but the guy told me they'll match prices if I find a lower price, which I couldn't find), so I got my helmet there. The guys really know their stuff. When you buy your helmet, they'll size it for you. My head is between a small and a medium. Medium feels too big, small gives me a headache after 30 minutes. I know I'll break into the small so that's what I ordered. After a weekend of wearing it it didn't break it in so I took it back to the shop. The guys there helped me custom fit it so it becomes a bit looser so I won't have too much trouble breaking into my helmet. I also ended up buying my jacket and gloves there. They owner was also very helpful in asking me what I want and telling me the features of different jackets and gloves. Really feel free to ask them anything. And if you need something they don't have, ask them to order it and ask them how much they'll charge. I still haven't found an online store or local store that beats their price. The only downside (which I was mentally prepared for from reading other reviews) is that it's very hard to get attention from the owner. They are very busy (too many customers) and they'll talk to me for a minute and then talk to someone else then come back to me in 3 minutes. But they do have other people on the floor who knows their stuff as well. So don't feel offended if you don't get owner's devoted attention. Just talk to the other guys there. read more

You may need to pack some patience - it's quite often chock full o' customers - but if you've got a newer machine and have grown tired of the typically expensive dealer experience, it's a nice alternative. I popped into this place because I needed a helmet for an upcoming autocross event. My thought was "a helmet is a helmet, right?"... so I figured they could help me out :) And could they ever! Turns out I was a bit simplistic in my thinking, but after some Googling of requirements, these guys set me up with exactly the right helmet! They patiently listened as I gasped in horror at the thought of paying $600 for a helmet (which as a small digression, I suppose is really not that much considering it is supposed to be protecting my BRAIN). Nonetheless, it seemed that my tiny head was only comfortable in helmets that were in that price range, and that just didn't sit well with me. But the wonderful guy helping me found a "last year's model, no fancy graphics, wicked deal" that was super comfy - for my head as well as my wallet. The guy seemed pretty stoked to know I was into racing, and so he talked about cars with me... which was a bonus :) Thanks to these guys for making a non-motorcycle girl feel completely at ease in a store full of gear I could probably never understand a use for :) Props. read more

so I went in for my second time. needed a part. in the parts dept was the most condescending person ever. older guy, as he talked it seemed he was the owner. asked how long I was riding(2 years) and what I needed. I wanted foot pegs for my crash bars. he proceeded to correct me and told me they were case savers. again in a condescended manner. I found a set and asked how much they were. he went downstairs and yelled up to me whether I knew or not if I actually had " case savers"... I said I did. as he was downstairs I checked out the parts dept and noticed used and old parts for my vintage bike. he came back up and proceeded to tell me the price. I mentioned I had a set of Harley pegs, which didn't fit my bike, and asked if he would be interested in them. well here is where it got weird. I heard all about his yearly taxes, rent and other expenses... blah blah.. I said ok, it was nice doing business with you as I left. he yelled back... no you're not doing business with me. nor will I .... ever! don't waste your time people read more

One of the other review writers wondered why someone would give Modern one star. I can explain why, even though I have given two. I have given two because yes, they have a lot of parts. And yes, they will give good deals. If that were the sole experience I'd had with them, sure, I'd give them more stars. But..... I think that if you need service work done, you have to be fully and completely sure of exactly what you want done, and you have to make it 100% clear *in writing* exactly what you want done, (seems like you need to be a mechanic yourself, and then why would you bother taking it to a shop?) or else you run the risk of them doing what they want to do, and not what you want/need done. I will consider getting parts from them in the future, but I am very unlikely to get any work done there again. I don't think it is the fault of the mechanics, per se, but something is going on that made me uncomfortable. read more

I was walking aimlessly in my riding gear near Commercial Dr, sniffing lilacs, smiling at babies and looking suspicious, ready for another hour of the same, when a call came in: "Your bike is ready!!" Ohhhh... What a QUICK Spring Maintenance service! Thank you, guys! Aaron explained each item on the check list in detail and charged a fair price. Then I asked Zak additional questions about what he did and what I should do, Zak who added a superb cosmetic touch to the "sinister" look of my black bike. Which was called "a good bike", and I proudly rode back home with total peace of mind, knowing that my life was in good hands. I was looking for a dual sport tire for my Suzuki V Strom .their price was a lot cheaper ( 25-30%) than the other stores and the best part was they had it in stock . Gotta say I'm very impressed with the experience I just had with the guys at Modern Motorcycling. The store is piled-up with gear and seems a bit chaotic which can be off-putting at first, however if you have done some research before you go in and have an idea of what you're looking for it makes for a very efficient experience. The guys are very busy but really know their stuff and can advise you if the gear you have in mind will do what you need it to do and suggest alternatives. I went in on a Saturday morning after researching the gear I wanted, was directed to the correct sizes for the gear that worked and alternate choices for the gear that didn't. In retrospect this saved me a lot of time and messing around because if I'd bought from the internet I would have got the size wrong on at least two items and one of the pricer items (boots) wouldn't have worked for me at all. The guys worked out one of their package deals on the stuff and I found the pricing comparable to anything I saw online. All of the items needed to be brought in from their supplier but they were able to get that done for me in about five days -- picked it all up this morning and everything was exactly as I'd specified. Pro: Internet comparable prices with human service and you get to try stuff on before you buy it. No high-pressure sales -- really felt like I got friendly honest advice and they didn't try to talk me into anything I didn't want (a pet peeve of mine - when I encounter it I generally never go back.) Con: If you don't go in with at least some idea of what you want you may leave more confused than when you went in. Overall: I'm definitely going back to modern motorcycling in future. read more

All the complainers have made the unknowing mistake of dealing with the owner Murray- not a friendly guy, although I don't doubt he knows his stuff. Aaron, his son, is awesome, as is Nathan. Highly recommended that you go in there with a bit of time to spare, because they ALWAYS have a full house. Great prices and great service will do that, along with their wicked selection. Don't see something you want from one of the brands they carry? Aaron will bring it in and let you try it out. The place is cramped with gear, but the employees are super nice and will give you good deals if they like you. Not sure about the people that gave this place 1 star, they don't seem very sharp. Every item I've found on fortnine was cheaper at modern. I got my jacket, gloves, and chain kit here. The employees know their stuff and like to get personal with you, rather than just make a sale. They remember my name and are always happy to see me. If you're a new rider, come here for help or equipment. They have a package deal if you buy a full set of gear (pants, jacket, helmet, gloves). read more

This review is for their parts and accessories sales only as I do not use these guys for service. The shop is more or less a hole in the wall, with cleanliness, design and layout of a place that hasn't changed much in a couple of decades. The variety of merchandise is spotty at best, but they do have a good selection of non-premium helmets. Prices are pretty competitive, but watch out for their "packages" - they make them sound a lot better than they actually are, by offsetting the lower margins on more expensive pieces with higher prices of the "little things". If you actually price these out online, you're not really getting that good of a deal in the end. What really kills the experience, however, is their archaic sales guys - some, like Aaron, seem willing to help and are friendly enough, but certain other individuals seem like they would rather lecture you and make you feel like an idiot for even suggesting that you are looking for something that they would "never even consider" using their "40 years of doing this". If you don't care for customer experience and don't mind being talked down to, this is a good enough shop to get fairly priced stuff. If you would rather pay a bit more to be treated like a customer, try one of the bigger stores/dealerships. Although, I hear, that once you're a "regular" here, you do get preferential treatment. read more

Please note how all the five star ratings for Modern are about buying "gear." Do not take your motorcycle here. Aside from the rude service (which is mostly from the old guy who is referenced in other posts) the parts are not warranty or standard parts that you would get for an "authorized dealer" which I expect from a Suzuki dealer. My last oil change revealed that my bike was not even test driven after service. I enquired - no one cared. I gave them a second chance this spring. FAIL. I called ahead to get a time estimate for a spring tune-up and was told to just bring it down at 9AM the next day. When I arrived, the old guy snapped that he wont have time to do it and it would not be until the following day. He proceeded to bark at the person trying to record my oil preference - "doesn't matter - its a Honda, just quote her this price." I took my bike elsewhere... The other workers are hit and miss - shop wisely and if your a woman - beware, they see you coming and will most likely make you feel stupid. read more

They have a lot of parts of many types of motorcycles so it's very likely you will be able to find a part for your type of ride. Also, they REALLY know their stuff and all of the people who work there are the type to go above and beyond what is necessary to help in whatever what they can. I have ordered parts that they do carry but are out of stock and it has not taken long at all to get them and they call me directly to let me know they arrive, usually quicker than expected. I've been going to Modern since 2005. I've sent many people there for great prices. Most the guys there give you the facts as they know it without the BS sales pitch. It's always good to support the local shops. **CAUTION GRUMPY OLD MAN** I have to warn you. Many people have a very bad experience at this shop because of "The Old Guy". If you catch him on a good day he's pleasent and very helpful, but most of the time he pisses people off. I feel for the other guys in the shop and the angry customers. My first experience with "The Old Guy" was pretty bad, but the others are great so I keep going back. I suggest you deal with Aaron (Big Guy) or anybody else. If you have no choice, but to speak with "The Old Guy" don't take it personally...he's just a grumpy old man. I agree with the other post on this one, it's exactly how to put it. Here is how to explain them in a nutshell: PRICES & PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE: GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE: HORRIBLE OR NON-EXISTENT I have been there a few times and know the guys by name but it took Aaron about 5 times meeting me to remember my name! To me that is just bad customer service. Then I brought my bike in to get them to fix it after it had been knocked over by a motorist and they literally sat on the bike for 2 weeks while I went back and forth between them and my ICBC claims adjuster. I was so frustrated I just went in one day and took it out of there. Of course I waited around for a good 10-15 minutes while they helped other people, which under normal circumstances I don't mind, but when you've had my bike for over 2 weeks and done nothing, I simply don't want to wait any longer. I'm not here to knock them down because they do give good advice and they have great prices but I would personally rather pay more somewhere else where I'm treated like I matter somewhat and don't have to wait weeks to have work done on my bike. They really just need a lesson in customer service and need to have some fresh input and an updated mindset of how to approach consumers better. Just as a note if you feel the same way i did, I went to Imperial Motorcycles just of Kingsway in BBY and within 24 hrs I was given the quote for my bikes parts and ICBC had it in there hands the same day I received it. Much more laid back and relaxed there if that's what you are looking for. Talk to Andy at the front, he has been a great help and called me 3 times in the 24 hrs regarding my motorcycle compared to 0 times by modern in 2 weeks or more (I always had to call them). So I bring my bike (New Ducati 1199 Panigale S - 3,512km - f***ing pretty new and mint)in beginning of this month cause I had a nail in my tire. So get this. They end up scratching my bike because some straps broke loose while they were repairing it and the bike ended up swinging and dropping. Yes my bike was in the air for a tire repair and yes i was standing there watching the whole incident happen. Mechanic said he was sorry and he would take care of me. Owner who was there said they would take care of me. Damages on my bike was scratches on upper and lower fairing, clutch cover, chip on my rim, scratch on rear tail and scratch on my solo seat cover. Get my bike back and they slapped me with a $79 bill for the tire repair and he said I would have to wait 2 weeks for their painter to repair my two fairings. WHAT!?!?!?! REALLY!?!?!?!.So I take my bike to the dealership the next day to get some work done and they told me I had a flat in my rear tire. Called Modern and told them about it and the owner yelled at me and the owners son wasn't accommodating. Both gave me a hard time. They told me the dealership didn't know what they were talking about and they told me to bring the bike back to them...YEAH RIGHT!!! I ended up calling my insruance company and claiming the incident. My insurance comany called me over two weeks later, they told me that they can't get a hold of them and when they did, they asked them about the incident. Modern told them they didn't know what bike they were talking about. Like the other review said, the worst business ever and if they do get good reviews, it's probably their friends or themselves doing it. Talked to other riders and I've been told the same by dozens others. Facebook friend riders have also said the same. Like they said, if you like getting ripped off or getting treated like a piece of s****, modern is the place. read more
