Updates to owners deceitful comments: 1) I never placed an order with them. 2) I gave them fergusons pricing to match or beat and they couldn't do it, so not sure how that's a form of leverage. More like favoritism to a local business. 3) the purchasing process was miserable with them. The owner no showed on the day of our appt, leaving one employee to run the entire store. We had 5 people in the store and had to actually leave for lunch and come back because we couldn't even have a conversation. 4) the only communication or work required on their part beyond the initial meeting was to answer an email if freight was included and if the products were in stock. Not sure how this led to many phone calls. Gave them the pricing from Ferguson's and asked them to beat. They matched or were higher on every item. When I informed them that I was going to buy from fergusons, this was the email I got. Very unprofessional coming from the owner of the business. read more

Unannounced, one Saturday afternoon we showed up expecting to wander leisurely through a showroom. We had already eyed a fixture we liked pretty well at a competing shop, and were simply looking for alternatives since that fixture wasn't exactly what we were looking for. The shop was in the midst of its move from its small Dilworth storefront to its now larger and more convenient space. We met Cathy who was busy instructing her team to wrap dismantled lighting in bubble wrap and to clear a path for anyone like us who might wander in. It was chaotic and not well lit. But Cathy was incredible ! She listened actively to what we described and showed us photos online, both company provided photos (professionally taken in a studio) and reviews past customers had posted about the same fixture, with it in situ. This was super helpful. The ceiling fixture she recommended was this one here. She did not have one in the store to show us. She had a sconce that had a bulb and glass covering that was similar but it wasn't this fixture. This fixture was not inexpensive and yet, her certainty that it was the right fixture for our application convinced us to buy it. It arrived in the store just a couple days later. We also bought three flush mount fixtures for our entry and two bedrooms, and a 2 fixture vanity lamp for our powder room. We love all of them. It was one of the quirkiest (and best) retail experiences we have ever had. Cathy is super knowledgeable about lighting, and is an excellent listener. I will go here any time I need lighting in NC. I had the worst possible experience in that store... The store associate was mean and nasty and made me cry leaving the store... She was absolutely rude, had a mean defensive tone and totally lack understanding of what good customer service is.. We asked her a question and she approached very close to me and said: "Don't you see, I have customers, I'll take care of them and then will get back to you". Needless to say that we were the first customers in the store and when we walked in, there was nobody there.. Also, I'm seven months pregnant... Besides, I was in that store two weeks ago and she was also very mean and made weird comments about me being pregnant; but I took it and tried not to pay attention.. but this time it was too much; she made me stand there watching her taking care of other customers and when we finally left because were ignored she ran outside after us and started yelling at us smth like: "why you leaving , don't you see I am taking care of you"... who does that and who yells at pregnant woman??? From my first time experience I had a feeling that that woman is not stable, but this time I'm totally convinced that she's not mentally stable and she should never ever work in the customer service.. and judging by the comments here this is not the first time people experience that side of her... After this terrible experience I've been having terrible pain in my stomach and praying that my baby is fine... If I could I would put zero and will never recommend this store to anybody. me and my family and my friends are definitely not doing business with them.. feel sorry for the owner, she indeed loosing lots of customers in that store because of that unpleasant lady.. I stopped in here the other day while returning from nearby Phat Burrito in the hipster-heavy South End area. I didn't need any lighting fixtures or anything, but it's seemed like a cool store so I checked it out. Indeed, the Modern Lighting Design Showroom is a cool store--packed with lights and fixtures of all varieties. And I really mean ALL--you can grab a light your grandma would own or one that your future self (as in 2029) would own. Some very futuristic/artsy stuff in here, so if that's your bag, definitely check it out. I will say this: a lot of the items are pretty pricy. Like, way too much money for me to spend on a light. But I could see how you might wanna. read more

I stopped in here while visiting Charlotte. The women working were very friendly and helpful. They have a wide variety in their showroom, and are accommodating to find things for you that they don't have in the show room. They are willing to drop ship items as well. Great customer service. I am from Va. I was in the store and purchased 3 kitchen pendant lights. I had asked if there were anything different about the lights that could cause problems with installation and,Kathy, the manager said no. Also, they told me they do not except credit cards. This should have been a red flag. The cost included a light and canopy. When the electrician came to install he said that these lights were low voltage. Because of this I needed a larger canopy to fit my transformer box. I called the store and Kathy informed me I needed to send an additional $300 for the canopies. I asked why it wasn't an even exchange and wasn't given an answer. I sent the check but later on contacted the light manufacturer and was told it should have been an even exchange. Since then, I have been totally ignored by Kathy and Liza, the owner. They had also called my electrician and harassed him because they questioned his expertise. They had been very rude to me throughout this process as well. I sent back the original canopies and requested a refund. They kept them and still no response. read more

This design showroom on South Tryon had some very interesting lighting pieces, but too outlandish for me in both taste and price. I found them to be WAY too expensive; even small hangings were a fortune, anywhere from $500 - $1000 and more. They are all very modern pieces, most are very large. If you are into contemporary design and are looking to make a statement, and have way too much money to spend on a lighting fixture, take a look in here. Just be sure to duck - I'm only 5'1 and I almost hit my head a few times. read more

Liza and Kathy were beyond AMAZING! Liza spent over an hour walking myself and the hubs through many different lighting options and we ended up with something completely different than my vision and I could not be more happy with it. The pricing was unbeatable. Once home and I researched the price on the internet I was blown away at how much she beat the price. We had a small hiccup in the order in which a number was transposed and the wrong lights were ordered. We were issued even more of a discount. Unfortunately during shipping one of the lights broke. No questions asked, they took the light back and even volunteered to come in on a day they were closed to meet me since I live over an hour away from the store. Not only do I love Liza and Kathy as far as I'm concerned there is no other place I will ever buy another light fixture. I look forward to working with them again in the future! read more

Liza and Cathy know their stuff and are extremely helpful, and Modern Lighting's pricing was better than the online retailers. We were renovating and removing plastic track lighting from a modern post and beam construction house which presented some lighting challenges since wiring cannot be moved without a significant undertaking and expense. I was having trouble finding someone locally that had a good grasp of the modern lighting options out there and/or solutions to some of our issues, so I took a trip to Modern Lighting Design and was happily rewarded. Liza and Cathy understood our aesthetic and pointed me to a number of options, even making suggestions for less expensive but similar fixtures when I gravitated to the highest priced options. Liza worked with us to design a monorail system for our challenging kitchen that looks and functions great.They acted immediately to rectify a couple of issues we had with a fixture with a manufacturing defect and missing pieces. When I recover from the reno and can afford to replace all the existing wall sconces in the house, I'll head straight back to Modern Lighting Design. read more

Modern Lighting is the first place (and most likely, the ONLY) I will shop for lighting in Charlotte. I've been a customer for almost 10 years. Liza and Cathy are absolutely wonderful to work with and their products are both excellent, as is their expertise. I've purchased at least a dozen fixtures from the over the years. Most recently, I went there after a horrendous experience with a popular national retail home and hardware store whose lights were poorly made. I made an appointment with Liza, brought photos and measurements of my space, and she helped me find the perfect replacements. The lights came in quickly, and were the perfect size and proportion. I also selected lighting for three other rooms while I was there, and am thrilled with every single one. Do yourself a favor and try Modern Lighting before you waste a lot of time on mail-order from catalogs or mistakes from the local hardware store. We went into the store with the intention of trying to fix a current kitchen lighting system by finding a replacement part we had been unable to find elsewhere. If we were unable to fix the current light then we were fully prepared to purchase new from Modern Lighting. I chose the store because we have a modern style and we thought they would fit our needs. The owner was so rude because "they do not sell parts" that we would never want to spend our money there. She immediately looked at what we brought in and assumed it came from Lowes, not that there is anything wrong with Lowes products, but she acted like it was cheap. Our lighting fixture is very high end and we would want to fix it or replace with a similar product. Her rudeness continued on, she immediately lost ours' and any friend's future business. If you want to shop at Modern Lighting be prepared to show them your credit report so they know you are worthy. read more
