ZERO rating! In my personal experience, Billie Tarascio was the worst attorney I worked with during my Family court case. She was referred to me by ACESDV, but my case became more conflict‑driven, disorganized, and significantly more expensive under her representation. I also saw many Domestic Violence survivor moms being referred to her by ACESDV, and it concerned me because, in my experience, she did not act in the best interest of vulnerable survivors and children. She is now posting in social media about the new law HB2995 Alec and Lydia Act and based on my personal experience with her, I believe her involvement is financially motivated. Her approach is profit‑driven rather than survivor‑focused, and I would NOT recommend her at all for anyone in a family court case, much less any Domestic Violence related representation. I contacted Modern Law via their website yesterday (7/15/21) to book a consultation with Billie at the Gilbert location, later that same day I was contacted by a gentleman (don't remember his name) who informed me that Billie wasn't available until Monday. No problem, I was able to change the appointment but before I hung up the phone I asked if there's a consult charge and I was informed it was $250.00. My mistake, I missed that part on the form. I let him know I couldn't pay right now, money is watched very carefully by my controlling S/O. 1 - According to the ML Yelp page that the owner posted..."We offer low cost solutions, pay as you go, online webinars and in office workshops." to which none were offered, just a "OK have a good day". 2 - This morning I wake up to my S/O yelling at me why there's 2 emails from a divorce attorney sending info to my attention...absolute brilliance Modern Law. I'm sure these are sent out automatically but seriously, these weren't even legit emails...they're the marketing campaign emails telling me all about their company. Had Shannon as a public defender and I must admit my plea agreement was no where near what I had signed for instead they added more unnecessary things that were not necessary, she didn't give much a argument only a request that didn't come off genuine . Not too aggressive or willing to defend nor was I questioned on my end of story of apparent allegations that left me without a argument to defend myself. I initially hired Modern Law to take on my custody battle, was great in the beginning as my children were going to be safe. However towards the middle of my case, things turned for the worse. My Attorney was let go and I was given a greenhorn of an attorney who stated she could handle the magnitude of my case. Unfortunately that was further from the truth, after multiple delays and now a change of judge. I have a judge is about to throw "the book" at me, because of all these delays. The incompetency shown by this attorney as well as the firm shows that they do not care of about children's lives. Sad to see that the firm is using the publicity of a HORRIFIC tragedy in the east valley to build up business. I came into contract with Modern Law a few months ago on one of their ProBono Days. CAREFUL, this is how they keep their star ranking high. They offer some free services to the community, give you some insight on your case, and then have you do a review "feedback" of the experience for a chance to win several prizes (later did I realize these go on Yelp). Anywho, more than 10K spent and have not even completed my trial for custody. Doesnt involve anything fancy, no assets, no child support, nothing. Everything this firm did, I could have done on my own. There were a few instances when I reached out in need of some immediate guidance to respond to opposing party regarding the current orders in place (I figured that is what you representer would do) and they would take anywhere between 2 to 3 weeks to get back to me. In the mean time opposing party had his representer be on call for him and was writing response letters within 24 hrs of incidents occuring and sending them to me. Can you imagine having to deal with an ex who has pulled your 4 year old child from her life long nanny, sending her off to someone random (that child then complains is hitting her) not letting you make contact phone contact with her, PLUS receiving letters from his lawyer as soon as he does this? Yet, NO ONE from THIS law firm is explaining what is happening, what you can do about, nor are they getting back to you after several requests? I felt hopeless, I felt as if I was failing my child, and I felt that I was on my own even though I had legal representation. Today I recieved a letter stating that my person is withdrawing and no longer representing me AND Im not surprised. You want to know why???? Because I had a crucial conversation with her a few days ago and let her know my frustrations of having to wait 2 to 3 weeks on several occasions now, SEVERAL; Regardless of needing some guidance and asking for someone to call me back. Just to get a call back took 1 week, to set up a time to talk took a few days, and by the time my responding letter was sent out, it was about 3 weeks. So what is the point of paying thousands of dollars if there is no one to help when you request it? This law firm was useless! In all honesty, Im not even mad she withdrew. I think it gives me the opportunity to find another firm that is more competent and willing to actually guide and assist their clients as needed. Billie the owner from Modern Law is doing some pretty cool things to give back to the community, but needs to focus more on the quality of work that her lawyers are doing. Regardless of Modern Law being well known and having awards, these just reflect Billie's work and not all others. Which is truely a shame. Therefore, I DO NOT recommend Modern Law. Incompetent. Had problems throughout the course of my case. Was "assured" by my attorney from the beginning that my ex-husband should be held financially responsible for his children, he was not properly co-parenting, and manipulative. I had years of emails, text exchanges, and voicemails. My attorney was no match for his snaky attorney. His attorney right out testified in court, no objection from my attorney. My attorney at modern law, made empty promises, was unprepared in court, and I ended up paying opposing attorney fees due to her suggestions and dropping the ball. Throughout the time as a client with modern law, I would call and ask for a follow up from someone in the office (three separate occasions), no response. Thousands and thousands of wasted dollars. I'm now going through the same thing with my ex, all over again. Terrible lawn firm. Actually, I was advised to turn my attorney in to the state bar. Where do I even begin. I found out about Modern Law from a friend who saw advertised a pro-bono day - which I was able to get a brief appointment at no cost to find out some answers to current issues I had with my parenting time/child support. Upon leaving that pro-bono day, they ask for a great review in exchange for the chance to win (gift cards, etc.) - not knowing much other than that they were somewhat helpful for my appointment, I left a good review. Everything I asked at that appointment was stuff I already knew as I was Pro-Se in a current case that was pending. Fast forward -- I was back in court (again) for more of the same issues, and wanted to put in a new petition to seek relocation. I was not looking to change my parenting time, just do 2 on and 2 off - I had a laundry list of details which (I felt) justified my request. I was also dealing with an ex who was late on medical, amidst a slew of other things. They couldn't give me a discounted appointment, which was understandable, so I made a full price "consult" with another attorney - little did I know this was a young attorney fresh out of law school. Her advice wasn't anything I didn't already know.. and she did little to give me reason to think that her firm was knowledgeable in handling these challenging cases (telling me that relocation isn't something the court likes) - which is ironic considering Billie, the owner of Modern Law, relocated herself. The attorney did tell me that I could pay $3,000 to them "just to prepare documents" (but not represent me)... to which I thought - why would I pay YOU to do what I can do using the county self service forms? Which is what I did in the end. I don't feel like this firm really truly puts forth more than just surface effort. They're great at taking your money and charging you obscene amounts for things you could probably do yourself (especially if you are in a pretty open and shut divorce case). I feel like the majority of this firm are new, fresh-out-of-law-school attorneys and the way that they hand cases off within the firm is alarming. Once you entrust an attorney with your case, you want follow through - not for them to allow a switch a few weeks in. Never again, I'll stick with a firm that's more level. read more

I would never refer this law group to anybody they are thieves. We gave them 6500 and they blew through it in a month going back and forth in emails after telling them to take it to court. The lawyer told us to keep it out of court that this was the best way to handle this. The law firm asked for another 6500 to continue the case. In 2017 my ex-wife challenged my guardianship (autistic, 32 year-old son) for the third time. I engaged Billie for advice ($350 per hour) for help. She proceeded to give advice that greatly damaged my life and more importantly- my son's life for the next 5 years and counting. She suggested that I represent my self which was a huge mistake. She failed to mention that the commissioner generally favored the female, which was common knowledge at that time. I am posting this review on both Modern Law &I Do Over, as it seems these 2 businesses are intermingled. My direct experience was with Jen Bone with "I do Over". My ex-husband and I retained her to do a modification to our parenting agreement. I have never been through any type of mediation before, so I really didn't know what to expect. We had a few initial zoom calls after we retained Jen. Right from the start things seemed unorganized and unprofessional. While she was retained, she cancelled appointments on more than one occasion, last minute or after the set appt was to start, and I would be waiting on zoom. I found it odd that one time after one of the canceled appts she sent me a gift card? Another time she texted my ex-husband directly and told him to tell me sorry she couldn't get on the zoom call; she was at the vet. At this point she started to lose credibility with me, as for an impartial party who is supposed to be neutral- why was she texting him directly? She advised she didn't have my number on hand, but why did he have his? One of the last mediations calls we were on, she told me several times throughout the call that "she agreed with my ex-husband". I do not feel she tried to mediate the situation. When I asked her to tell us what was common out there with other agreements, she would not advise anything. She didn't have an answer. This concerned me, as she was so confident that my ex-husband was right, as she agreed- but could tell me what majority of the parenting agreements in Arizona are. IAT this time, I withdrew from my services with her, as I did not feel this was right or in my best interest long term. I didn't feel she had a good understanding of the current law to properly educate us on the topic. Billie with Modern Law stepped in at the end as I was terminating my relationship with Jen @ I Do Over. She was vague also and did not answer any of my direct questions and concerns about Jen and how the mediation process went. I had several billing issues- and because my ex-husband found them and initially reached out, somehow, I had to PROVE that I had paid my ex-husband for half of the services to even retain access to the final executed agreement. After speaking with other mediation services and Attorneys I was advised that this is NOT normal procedure or experience you should have with a reputable mediator. I do not recommend either of these businesses. Both Modern Law & I do Over are horrible to work with. No follow through and both lack serious professionalism & general law understanding needed to be efficient in the services they offer. * look for a reputable firm, don't make the mistake I did! read more

This is the worst law firm in Arizona, they will ask you for a pro Bono day review for the star rating, the contract that you sign has a lot of fine print to screw the client, they will charge you thousands of dollars for "case status memos" and "strategy sessions" that you are not allowed to attend because they are fake. They will ask you for your Social security statement so they can analyze your income to figure out how much they can hose you for. They will not do any of the work on your case, they will not initiate any partial or full settlement out of court to increase the cost. They will not submit any evidence at trial if you are a minority male client. You will lose everything you have and end up in the court of appeals if you are a minority male and hire this firm do not use these con artists. My now ex wife had 2 lawyers in court hers and mine. My attorney didn't object to anything and didn't submit any of the marital debt, then sent me a large bill for the inadequate service. It gets worse my attorney has the audacity to tell me the marital debts would be submitted after trial knowing the court will not allow post trial exhibits. I was screwed by this firm. Please look elsewhere for a lawyer if you are a minority male. And please ignore all of the "pro bono" day review. Oh but my attorney did make sure to submit at trial my current income that had 19 months of pay increase after the date of service that the court is using to determine spousal support that were not wages from the community prior to the date of service. She also agreed to give my ex wife 50% of comingled funds from a equity loan on my separate property and left me with the debt. Unless you want your life screwed up and end up in bankruptcy court after divorce stay clear of this law firm. I got left with paying $18,000 a year for 2 years in spousal support 50% of my net income at the time of service. And nearly $70k all of the marital debt. And almost 20k to this firm who didn't do anything on my behalf during the divorce. RUN DONT HIRE THIS FIRM!!!! read more

My experience with modern law slowly declined and then outright plummeted. I interviewed with Billie because I wanted to retain her council on a high conflict custody case. She swiftly pushed me to one of the males in the firm and a week later I was shuffled to another attorney with no explanation of why. She did nothing on my case and it took 2 weeks for her to start a letter I asked to be sent to my ex husband to try and prevent a trial. I then found out that Stacey did not have a paralegal and they swiftly shoved me to another lawyer. We seemed to get on and she wrote the letter for me which my ex declined and I was told to add money to my trust to prepare for trial. I did so only for them to come back and say they needed and additional 6k to go to trial within 4 days. When I told them I didn't have it they filed for a withdrawal without my consent or knowledge. I'm out 10k+ and now have to scramble to find a lawyer less then a month before trial. Save your money and avoid this firm like the Plague it is read more

Darin started w/my case, left struck out on own, said I would follow him &he never reached out again. Went to Jon Collins took a look at case. Went to speak directly with Billie, the owner and she found Darin had prepared my uniform interrogatory responses but were NEVER fully completed &NEVER filed &past due date. Billie knew they were at fault &asked what I wanted. I told her I wanted my $6000 back. She told me that she would do for me something that she had never done before. She told me (as The Lord as my witness) that she would REFUND my money &do my divorce for free, UNLESS we go to trial &then they would have to charge me and to come back to Modern Law and they would set it RIGHT! So, I did. My mistake was not getting that in writing. 3 more months passed and no progress was made. I became frustrated and asked for progress and directly ask why none has been made. I asked to make appointments with the attorney to move forward and I just got the run around. I also ask why I had not received my refund. This is when the tables really turned on me. Modern Law was not working for me and I don't believe now looking back, that they ever planned to. Billie told me she never said she was going to refund me but CREDIT me and work off the $6000 credit. This lie made me very angry. I had spoke to one of the 3 or 4 lawyers/staff working on my case about POSSIBLE progress and yes, I was angry. I was saying colorful words in general but not directed toward any one person. This was their way out. After that, I was called out for harassment and verbal abuse. I received a letter from Billie herself stating they could not work with me if I "abuse" her staff. I replied and apologized stating it was not my intention to hurt her staffs' feelings with my generalized words. I suggested in the future I thought it best to only email my attorney for communication and also to make sure I have RECORD of everything we cover and nothing will be misconstrued. Billie replied and agreed that would be a good means of communication. But wait, this is where they got another way out. So when one of the attorneys FINALLY emailed to set a phone conference, I replied and told her what Billie and I spoke about. That we both thought it best to communicate through email. Next thing I know I'm getting an email letter again from Billie herself stating that my being difficult and my unwillingness to speak with the attorneys has made her decide to discharge me as a client. That they would not work with me. Now this is after 7 months trying to make progress with my divorce. I ask for a refund of my $ and I quickly received a statement from them burning up $6000 of "credit" on absolutely nothing substantial. Billie even listed on this statement &charged me to prepare her letter of dismissal as a client AND listed a second charge to revise the letter. In the motion for dismissal of Modern Law as counsel, Billie wrote it out as my idea to leave Modern Law. I asked for my case file and I was told that I COULD NOT have it unless I signed my release from Modern Law. this was coercion and blackmail. Jon Collins had to contact Modern Law to get my case file. I never signed the motion to release Modern Law so I'm sure they forged my signature to be able to let me go. After Modern Law did what they first intended to do, cover their butt for dropping me and not filing my interrogatory responses by the filing due date by getting me back on board with their firm, Billie did what was best for her. She strung me along and then found BS reasons to not work with me. Billie had told me that she NEVER said she would refund my money. That she would NEVER do that. That's insane. She has no problem lying to her clients. I found this true on many accounts when we spoke. Even her billing and stating it was at my request to leave Modern Law. So, I needed an attorney to handle my divorce. went back to Jon Collins. He took a look at my case and to no surprise, told me, YOUR CASE IS EXACTLY IN THE SAME PLACE IT WAS WHEN YOU FIRST CAME TO ME months ago when Modern Law first dropped you. Jon Collins wrapped up my divorce &set me in the direction for QDRO. This is the point I had to make BE SURE TO SHARE writing this short novel of a review; these other professionals said they have heard from other professional sources AND clients as well, that MODERN LAW is notorious for dragging things along taking much longer than necessary, PREYING on a clients emotions and taking advantage of them. This is EXACTLY what had happened to me. According to Billie and her statement, it cost just over $12,000 to say they were representing me. There are several Modern Law reviews from people that have done only one review. That's not authentic. They have a big social media following but don't let that fool you. Not only did I waste time and money, but my child was put in an even worse situation based on this firms actions. After no one from their firm was able to correct a major error on their end that has irreparably damaged our family, they are withdrawing services and leaving us with massive debt, an open emergency case, and zero representation. Robyn Barrett is an AMAZING Family Court Attorney !!! AAAAA+++++ First off, I rarely write reviews, but this one HAD to be put out there. It may be more of a novel, but I feel that it is totally worthy to give her and her team (Step) high accolades that are very deserving !! When I first met Robyn ( yes we are on a first name basis now and I'll explain that further) I was mad as hell at my husband and the crap he had put me through, I was scared because of his tactic's of controlling me. So Robyn met a woman that was scared, beaten down and a low self esteem. I didn't see and couldn't see a future ahead for me ! Our meeting was brief and not overwhelming to me because Robyn knew just how to get the answers of what I wanted and most importantly what she needed to know about my marriage and where I wanted to go. I hired her the next day and to be honest, I did not get a 2nd option as many do and you should if you feel the need, I got great vibes off of her I have never regretted not one second. My STBX was making things difficult, and I soon realized that Robyn gave me the strength to move ahead with my life, and I left the State I was living in for PEACE while my divorce was being handled. I cannot even express how much stress that took off of me. I lost weight, my happiness and laughter returned, the Gone Me WENT away and the old happy me returned in spades. Robyn kept in touch with me, just about my well-being, that was huge to me, She was there for many personal aspects of my new life and rejoiced with me and cheered me on! She completely took over and I never worried once that I would fall through the cracks, and when opposing counsel was dragging, she took the bull by the horns and go it done. This lovely woman is not only an amazing person, but a killer Attorney and I am blessed to call her a friend. She is an Attorney that you would want to at least have a consult with, and I couldn't imagine why you wouldn't hire her. To add, Robyn right arm gal Stephanie D. I found Modern Law when I was looking to establish custody for my daughter. I met with Billie initially and she matched me with Katie. We are now wrapping up my case and I am beyond relieved. My experience was not perfect, but it was successful because my goal of establishing stability and consistency for my daughter has been achieved. That is so worth it. Katie is smart as hell, she does her best to make sure what matters is addressed, and she will fight for you, without question. Something I've learned is that attorneys will dig into the work and sometimes not come up for air to keep you in the loop for every single item involving your case. Attorneys are human, and if you don't feel communicated with- say something. This firm does their client's a wonderful service by providing advocates that you can address concerns with. This is a service I utilized and then had a candid, honest conversation with Katie. Katie and I worked together to make sure we communicated clearly and my concerns were addressed and resolved. Katie and Candice were a great support during this whole process and they helped remind me that I have a voice and what I want matters. I am so thankful for the team at Modern Law. THE WORST FIRM! Modern Law seems to be more worried about social media and appearances rather than the actual job being done for clients. I first worked with Katie, who is a Junior associate. I felt Katie advised me incorrectly on the process for obtaining an order of protection (you would hope and pray your attorney would know this).. which ultimately ended up hurting my case tremendously! I had to go to ANOTHER temporary hearing AND PAY FOR IT bc of this error. I was also billed for her team ghost writing something I couldn't even use. Katie did not show up on camera for my trial either. I sat alone on camera with my ex husband, his attorney and the judge. SO SCARY AND INTIMIDATING! Katie called in by phone for my trial.. No warning. SUPER UNPROFESSIONAL! After the trial, she called me & asked me how the judge's face looked etc. Just so disappointing! I had to pay the same amount for the trial even though I felt completely unrepresented. Talked with the owner Billie about the experience. Knowing my case was high conflict, Billie then proceeded to tell me I was a good candidate to represent myself with her other document prep business. WHAT?! I was shocked because that is the worst advice and 1000% not what I needed to hear during that time! Billie "allowed" me to switch to another attorney within her firm after our conversation. She also insulted me on this same call saying I clearly love to talk and should just self represent. Ironic coming from Billie! This is the most stressful time in my life and the last thing I need to hear from the owner who I have given my life savings to is an insult and then feeling like she doesn't want to even help me! She would recommend I represent myself later down the road AGAIN. That's twice! Feels like this firm just wants to do the light lifting and collect money for it. Then my new attorney Christopher called me to see if I had "given Billie's offer of representing myself any thought."I had TWO motions by Modern Law submitted on my behalf without my approval. I felt everything Modern Law did for me was left until the absolute last minute. Unacceptable for Modern Law to bill clients for motions they can't even review before submission. I was over billed for pretty much everything. My ex submitted to drug tests and the firm billed me $15 for "file maintenance of every single test even though I received them and reviewed them independently. No discussion on it either. Just kept racking up billable hours. What a waste of funds. Every meeting/phone call we had included at least 2-3 people from the firm. All three billed me for the meetings too. YAY! Again, huge waste of funds. After a very stressful summer of working with Modern Law, they basically told me I had to give them another $11k or they would not represent me at my rapidly approaching next hearing. I had already paid way more than this amount for the previous work and couldn't afford anymore up front so they withdrew from my case less than one week before my discovery responses were due! Again, last minute...Crippling my case! Knowing I was out of money and would not be working with them further, they quickly threw together some documents to file or send over half way started so they could bill me for those too. My attorney Christopher even billed me for a closing letter TO ME saying thanks for working with him. I have never written a negative review like this but as a single mother who works hard for her money and had to go to court against a drunk driver to fight to keep her kids safe, Modern Law more than let me down. I wish I would have read more truthful reviews about this firm before wasting my hard earned money with them. Don't be fooled by all the SEO and the Social Media posts. It's all fluff. Modern Law is not it. Ironically, once I parted ways with Modern Law, I settled my "high conflict" case out of court. Funny how that works, right?! And we settled for EXACTLY what I offered since day 1. I do not recommend Modern Law for anything. Not even document prep because it's all left to the extreme last minute. Modern Law's billing needs to be monitored otherwise you will find every employee with their hand in the cookie jar! Modern Law had no problem taking money from a hard-working, single mother of four. Working with Modern Law made a difficult case so much more stressful because of their lack of effort.
