I've been buzzing my head for the past few years, but after meeting David I decided to check out Model Call and see if I could leave with a cut that would make me return. The inside of the salon is clean and inviting. They offer refreshments, which is something I've never experienced at a salon, and it's big enough inside so you don't feel cramped. Finding parking wasn't too hard, although you might want to make sure you show up early on the weekend. David is a master at his craft and it shows in his work. When I told him I wanted my sides taken down to a 4 or 5, he told me he doesn't use those attachments but could do it with a pair of scissors. Not only did he deliver, but this is the best my hair has looked in years. If quality is something you look for, be sure to schedule an appointment with David. For those looking for a little more, he's also a colorist. read more

I have been with my stylist Peter Nguyen for over a decade. I have followed him three different salons and have to admit that this is probably the nicest. The staff is lovely, the lighting is wonderful with lots of natural light coming in that reflects off the giant mirrors, and it is decorated with simple yet beautiful details They have various snacks available (which is clutch when you've been in the salon all day). Model Call does nails, facials, and massages on top of all the hair services. Now let me gush over Peter. Like I said, I've been with him for over a decade. I think only 2 people have touched my hair in that time (one was a girl who needed a model and the other was when I lived in NY and needed my color done before a wedding, but I flew back to SD to have it cut). Peter is a true artist. He gives such attention to details. His cuts last for ages without losing shape and his color is so pretty and multi-tonal. I constantly get asked who does my hair and receive compliments. In fact, ive had a handful of friends start using him as well! If you are looking for a new stylist, Peter is it!!! read more

Victoria attempted to fix my hair by using a product to take the gloss off which left my hair orange. The owner stated he would try and fix my hair and then covid caused the salon to close. I continued attempting trying to contact him to no avail and received no response. I had to go somewhere else and spent $250 to get my hair fixed. I don't recommend this establishment. read more

This is a beautiful salon, but I don't recommend Victoria. - I went in for a bright balyage on 2/20. I left the salon with icy blue tips (toner not fully removed) and streaky/chunky highlights. Victoria advised me to wait two weeks for the color to settle, so I did. -I reached out to Victoria on 3/10, providing photos of the color (attached) and requesting corrections. She said she would be "more than happy" to get my in to provide correction, once she was back from her honeymoon on April 1st. I was available sooner, however she was not. I said ok. -Cue COVID... I follow up again on 3/23 with no repsonse. I follow up on 4/29 and am told, understandably, that she cannot do hair at this time, but that I was at the top of her list at re-open. I am stressing because I need to get my engagement photos taken, I am unhappy with my hair, and I've already paid to have my hair done. -6/3 I follow up again, as I hear salons are opening, and ask about a possible credit to use later for my hair or correction, as I'm on a time crunch. I am told now that too much time has passed, there is too much regrowth, it is no longer a correction, but that she'll provide me a 20% discount to have my hair done. I was shocked. There was some back and forth, I explained my frustration and that COVID was out of my control, that I didn't feel it was fair, and she stood strong in her offer of 20% off getting my hair done again. I even said, "what about the big streak on top you said you would correct?" and she offered to correct it for a charge of $35. If I had known I would be charged all over again, I would have paid someone else to do my hair MONTHS ago. I don't agree with her stance and in my opinion, this was absolutely terrible customer service. Especially considering I did not have a hair dresser and I could have been a new life long client. read more

I've been here several times and it's great! The salon is beautiful and well managed. The receptionists are friendly and helpful. They also always keep it stocked with coffee and tea! Bryan B is super knowledgable and experienced. His haircuts are always on point (haha get it?). Anyway, he's also great with color. I never colored my hair, so I was a bit nervous. While talking to Bryan I could tell I was in good hands though. I've gone from real to purple to gray! I don't like to write negative reviews on salons, so I usually keep my opinions to myself. In this case I'm not going to name names, but I will alert anyone who is debating on buying a groupon, that if you don't see the person they put you with called out by name in these yelp reviews, don't buy the groupon. First, they did not tell me when I made the appointment for two people that one of the stylists was still in training. That is a professional courtesy that should be passed on to the client. However, the trainee probably did a better job than the person who was supposedly not a trainee. The stylist cut my hair wet and everything looked even and just as I would like. Then she styled my hair and proceeded to cut and thin after the styling. I liked my hair after leaving but was leery that the truth would come out after washing it. Suffice it to say, I'm a middle aged woman who has had my share of haircuts and this ranks up there with the worst. I understand the choppy look, and I like it, but there has to be some sort of rhythm with the choppiness.....it can't looked hacked. I will have to use a curling iron in order to make this work or else go get a new haircut. They get only a 2nd star because my hair is even at the bottom. When I showed my husband after I washed it what it really looked like, he laughed. Also a haircut should not take 1 hour and 45 minutes. read more

Trim with Eryc every three months now every two months because the hair is shorter and need to be checked and styled more frequently. What I like the best is my stylist and I know if I ever needed a colorist that Jason (Eryc's very significant other husband is available). The salon itself is simple but not too minimal. No high pressure tactics on selling product. They make sure to call and remind you of your appointment. For Eryc, Jason and a very friendly staff, this place rocks! Okay, first of all WOW! Love this location. What an adorable salon, I guess it used to be an old warehouse back in the day and they have made such good use of it! So many stylists and a great set up. NOW for my TRUE REVIEW! I went in here on a whim after skimming through Groupon and I came across one that Jenna had put up for a cut and color. Needless to say.... I was in dire need of both. I gave her a call and went in the very next afternoon. She absolutely BLEW ME AWAY! I went from muddy brown to the darkest I could get (nearly black) and from a sad mop to a sharp A-Line bob with straight fringe. This girl KNOWS what she is doing! On top of that, she was a blast to talk to and generally awesome and incredibly knowledgeable about her work. It has been about a week and I must say, the cut is so easy to maintain and fits perfectly with the natural fall of my wild mane. I got a Groupon for a haircut and a partial balayage and was scheduled with Brittanie the day of. I showed her pictures of the cut and color I desired and she agreed that they would work well on me. She started with a dry cut and a round of color which ended up requiring a second round of color to up the brightness. All-in-all it was a 4.5 hour appointment. I appreciate that Brittanie was persistent with the appointment and that she was committed to giving the extra time it would take to get my hair to the color I had shown her. The final result wasn't exactly what I had asked for but it was ultimately a great dye-job and decent cut and I love that Brittanie dedicated her time to my appointment and request. I have gotten multiple compliments on my hair and would trust Brittanie to do her best to make anyone happy with their cut and/or color. read more

Model call salon is fabulous. Kind and attentive front desk staff, and great stylists with a modern sleek decor. The building is next to the Liquor Store. Park on the street. I park on the street behind the salon. It's a one way road. So it's been several months since I've been able to see Dylan so he could fix my hair. I've been busy with summer activities, school, and traveling around the country for family stuff. My hair naturally has waves and curls and straight parts to it. The pic below is the worst possible hair pic I could have taken. Freshly washed, slept on it and not brushed at all. I followed Dylan Eccleston here from another salon. He always provides such a luxurious and relaxing spa-like experience that is very well suited for this salon. Among great products he always give the best treatments, that are personalized to each individual. When he does your hair, he shows how much he cares. Recently he created an Organic Aromatherapy Finishing product that really pushes the spa experience to a reality. I love lavender, so he used that one for me. My hair was so elegant and shiny. I have been looking for a good hair stylist in San Diego for a long time, and I finally found him!!! DAVID ARI is AMAZING. He listened to what I wanted, carefully studied the photos I showed him for a moment, and then worked his magic. He did a balayage, a deep conditioning treatment to repair my broken ends, and a toner to give me a few ashy blonde strands, and it came out PERFECT. Exactly like the photo I showed him. I am so stoked. The cut was just as good... if you need your hair cut dry, he is an expert. I have been growing my hair out for a year and wanted him to keep as much length as possible, so the dry cut allowed me to keep more length. I don't know how he did it, because my hair was waaay longer on one side than the other, but he evened everything out, cut off the dead ends, and it looks like basically the same length as it was before! It's a miracle!! (Actually it's not- he's just that good.) Almost as important as how good they are, I look for a stylist who also has a friendly personality and who I can get along well with, since we're stuck with each other for several hours. Lol! David was SO sweet, he was constantly refilling my water, and asking me if I was OK. It was such a great experience. I walked into Model Call Salon and had a semi uncomfortable situation occur with someone at the front desk. Jacqui immediately came to my rescue and saved me. It's crazy how, after one bad situation occurred, I met such an incredible hair stylist. Jacqui is professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and just gets it. She made me feel so comfortable and the conversation was amazing. I have never been happier with my hair and that is the truest statement ever. It's a rarity to find someone who can win your heart over in such a short time and immediately win your loyalty. I haven't been able to find a hair stylist who understands my crazy Asian hair and how to color it with quality products and care. Later, Roger, the owner, came over to ensure that the situation earlier didn't ruin my day and wow, I must say, he turned everything around. He gave me a goody bag full of amazing products and I was shocked that he went out of his way to ensure that I had the best experience possible. Without Jacqui and Roger, I don't think I would have come back but after such exceptional customer service, I'll be coming back every 6-8 weeks. As with many of the other reviews, less than great experience with the front desk when my scheduled Groupon stylist called in sick and I showed up to find no stylist available who "did" Groupons. I was asked to come back in 2 hours so that they could find a stylist. Scott tried to step in at this time to see if he could get me in, but they said for me to just come back instead. I came back in 2 hours, and ended up seeing Scott anyways, which worked out really well, since this is one of the best haircuts I have received. The front desk experience is really not great, and apologies really don't mean much when you're wasting someone else's time. Both Scott and Abraham worked on my hair - with the primary cutting by Scott. I came in with a pretty mishmash of ideas and Scott did a great job of understanding what I wanted, and somehow achieving a soft inward bend on my very tough, curly, no consistent curl pattern, dry, and thick hair. It's been a few weeks, and while it took me a little while to get used to the thicker cut, I love my haircut! It can go curly or straight, and is exactly what I wanted. I have finally found a good stylist in SD and will definitely be back. read more

This salon has a secret hiding in the back that I'm going to expose to everyone. Not only do they do hair well, they have an amazing masseuse named Mary who is one of the best massage therapists I've come across in San Diego. She is very warm and welcoming, and made me immediately feel comfortable being there. On the way back to the massage room we discussed problem areas and any muscles I wanted her to focus on. Her attention to detail does not go unnoticed. Aromatherapy oil on the face-rest sent me to heaven as soon as I lied down. The music is spot on and relaxing, she uses several massage techniques throughout the session and they all hit those cramped up areas on or around the muscles that need special attention. I spent most of the 90 minutes appreciating being there and thankful that I found someone who knows what they're doing and lets me enjoy the music in silence while they help repair my body from a hard work week. I just got a brazillian blowout by Travis Meyer at Model Call and Let me tell you it is the most amazing thing I have ever did for my hair. I went from flat ironing everyday (40 min) to just blow drying that now takes me about 20 min. I have no frizz my hair is super shinny and silky. My hair has never felt this good. He really took his time to make sure every piece was being treated. Well worth the $250. And he offered 50$ for my first time. How amazing is that he really is a master at what he does. I saw Yoshi for a cut and balayage highlights. I am very happy with my haircut - Yoshi was professional and meticulous. Really great cut and blowout and I recommend him for these services. The highlights were a different story. I asked to not use warm tones (I am a natural dark ash blonde and so warm, golden blonde looks bad with my skin) and that is what I ended up with. I expressed concern immediately after my appointment and was told that it was the lighting in the salon. I have now waited several days and tried washing with a purple shampoo, but I am stuck with cheap looking, yellow highlights. I purchased a Groupon for this salon after my old stylist moved to the East Coast, but I do not believe that booking an appointment with a Groupon should mean poor quality services. read more

Dylan Is a BABE! Love his everything to pieces! He's a wizard with a pair of scissors and did such a lovely job with my cut and color! I loved everything from the scalp massage to the awesome oils he left in my hair after the wash, something of his own personal touch and creation. STAY AWAY! I went there yesterday and got the WORST haircut ever from John. I am a 36 year old professional mother of two and was really looking forward to some pampering and a great cut. Unfortunately, I got neither. He started 30 mins late, nobody offered me anything when I arrived, I didn't get a wash, just a rinse (two rinses, actually --and even the stylist said the first was scalding and the second freezing). The stylist insisted on trying to give me a Victoria Beckham cut, even though I have curly hair and told him I didn't think it would work (it didn't). Even the receptionists were uncomfortable when I asked them if they liked it. Thank goodness it was a Groupon and only cost $40. Even better, I called Groupon today and they immediately refunded my money. They probably would've given me extra if I'd sent them a picture of the cut! read more

My coworker recommended Model Call Salon, so I turned to yelp for some guidance. Much to my surprise, I found out that Dylan has moved to Model Call (from a former salon I had gone to years ago). I called to make an appointment and spoke to Anthony (I believe his name was Anthony, at least!). He was extremely helpful and did not seem like your typical salon receptionist who is just SO displeased with the fact he/she has to actually take your calls! Anthony even called me back to try and figure out a time that would work out for me. He was awesome! Anyway, I set up an appointment for the following week for balayage/hair cut and Dylan saved my hair (once again!). Definitely recommend Dylan and/or Model Call Salon in general.
