a pizza with olives and mushrooms

I frequently go to one of the 2 MODs in York. I was shocked when I got to the one in the Belmont plaza in Lancaster on a Saturday afternoon. Was ot greeted by the staff. It wasn't busy. The counter where the pizza ingredients are was so sloppy and messy with spilled things. I was told that ricotta cheese was not an option. (I've always gotten it in York.) The young man seemed confused when I asked for my pizza to be a little bit more well done. All of the tables were dirty. The drink stand looked like it hadn't been wiped down in a week. The floor was dirty, with spills and dropped things. It was kinda gross.

Better than I expected but still pretty average. I do like that for one price you can put as many or as little toppings on your pizza as you'd like. They make the pizza subway style right in front of you than pass it on to someone else for the next task. I did feel that their process could be improved, as the second guy that makes your pizza has to take off his gloves to check you out before passing it on to the girl that ONLY takes them out of the oven. I think cashiering should be left to her, sincel technically she's only handling a wooden paddle. It was clean inside and the pizza crust was thin like a torilla but tasted better than expected. I will say they were generious with the toppings, but don't expect to be in and out. We used about 38 minutes of our hour lunch break getting our pizzas made.

Ate here today, pizza was very good. Some kind of funky stuff from the ice machine got on my wife's cup, like a slime. We got a new cup. I told 2 separate employees about it, and showed one of them close up. 20 minutes later when we were done, it was still there. It's right where you have to hold your cup against the bar. Pretty bad that in 20 minutes when it wasn't busy nobody could clean it.

I had an excellent experience! I'm glad I stopped in for a quick lunch. This will be added to my list for lunches going forward! Employees were very friendly. No wait. Pizza topping selections are fresh and do many to pick from. I love that you don't have to pay extra per topping.

Paid for the Mod, got the Mini's worth of toppings. Not worth $10!!!

Updated: Yup, still terrible. Went there today and got takeout (mobile order) because it was close to other errands and I regret it. It wasn't as dirty, but the bathroom REEKED of urine. And our pizzas were sparsely covered. I've never seen a Mod made this way. Thankfully my 6 year old was just happy for her favorite pizza. And no one called out my order, I saw them put it together but then they just moved on. I said, "have you called names out on any of these?"and the young man behind the counter said, "uhhhh, I guess no, so what's your name?" But I saw my name on the slip and just told him thanks and bounced. Once again, I have to say it -- go to the Rohrerstown Rd location!

"Maddy" pizza with tomatoes and mushrooms

This is another create your own pizza place. It may be fair to say, once you've been to one, they are pretty much the same. The thing that sets them apart is the overall flavor of the pizza. I think it starts with the pizza dough. Mod Pizza had some interesting picks on their menu. While I stood in line, waiting to put in my pizza order, I watched the "pizza dough" guy roll out more dough. Now, at first, I didn't see him wash his hands as I was concerned that he wasn't wearing any gloves. After about 2 minutes or so, he stepped away to do something else and then came back. Before he proceeded, he washed his hands. That was comforting. Nobody wants to eat food from someone else's hands. I settled on getting a Maddy (a plain cheese pizza), topped with tomatoes and mushrooms. I did notice that Mod Pizza just recently started doing hand spun milkshakes. Well, the sign I read indicated that it was fairly new. Having milkshakes is a bit different from the competitors. Anyway, my coworker ordered his pizza and they both were done about the same time. My pizza was okay. It was good but nothing special. I can say that the pizza crust was nice and thin, like I prefer. My toppings didn't gall off or separate from the crust, so that's a plus. Even the sauce had good flavor. If I had a pizza craving and Mod Pizza was around, I would consider going. It's a good, made to order personal pizza.

I was skeptical about this place, but curious. My youngest daughter loves pizza and what a cool thing to be able to customize your own. There was a line, but moved pretty quick. It can be a bit intimidating with folks lined up behind you, staff pushing you for your order/toppings and having endless combinations. I was going to get her a 6", but it looked way to small. Because it's a thin crust, the 6" would be the equivalent of single slice from a local pizzeria. Wise decision, she ate 3 slices of the full size (11"). There was only one mistake when ordering and I'm going to give the guy a pass, given they just opened, it was very busy and employees are probably still learning. I specifically asked for no mozzarella, he confirmed, he wrote it down and I still got mozzarella. I think part of the issue is that they write the topping down on the parchment paper, but the size of the dough covers it almost entirely, so the next person can't really see what's marked on the sheet. Large oven, pizzas cook in a few minutes, and you are on your way. I was pleasantly surprised. The combination I built was tasty. I'm biased to thin crust though (and this is very thin). Normally I don't finish an entire pizza, but these are 11" pies, very easy to eat a whole one. Approximately $11.50/11" pie with unlimited toppings.

This was a crazy busy place, upon my Saturday evening visit. Be prepared to fight for a parking spot, if not hover around the lot in your car and stalk people walking to see if they free up their car space. To be honest, such a frustrating parking hassle just really sets the whole visit off on a bad note. My guess is that Mod loses a certain amount of business because customers are unable to park nearby. But this was a family meetup event, and I eventually found a parking spot, and eventually my sister did, and eventually my niece did also. And of course the entrance line was lengthy, but it went rather swiftly. You quickly forget the parking hassles when you see the immense amount of toppings that you consider for your pizza, and when you start going down the pizza line as you are being offered all sorts of sauce, meats, veggies, spices, etc. The seven of us were lucky to find a big enough table during our 6pm visit to Mod, right at the height of peak dinner madness. And we were pleasantly surprised that the pizzas did not take long to bake and be served to us. The pizza crust is a little thicker than what Blaze Pizza uses. My anti-carbohydrate mind prefers a thin crust; but I convinced myself that Mod's crust was just a bit more perfect than Blaze's. All the toppings were delicious and fresh. The pizza had that perfect fire-oven char. And it was the perfect size for my hungry tummy to feel comfortably satisfied. While a family gathering is always worth a hassle (of parking, in this case), I completely enjoyed our visit to Mod and would love to do it again!

    Good looking pie!

Since opening its doors in the summer of 2016, this West James Street gem has been marrying Old Country Italian traditions with the incredible bounty of Lancaster County agriculture. It's no surprise they've caught national attention, earning a James Beard Award semifinalist nod for their culinary excellence. Even culinary icon Alton Brown has sung the praises of the team behind this kitchen. The atmosphere is buzzy and warm, anchored by the beautiful glow of their wood-burning hearth. To kick off the night, you have to dive into their incredible beverage program--specifically the amaro selection. Their curated bittersweet herbal liqueur flights are unmatched and provide the perfect, authentic start to the meal. As for the food, the menu is a masterclass in balance: Little Gem Salad: Do not skip this. It sounds simple, but the crunch of the lettuces paired with a flawless lemon-garlic dressing, shards of grana padano, and crisp house croutons ruins all other Caesar-adjacent salads for you. Carpaccio: Melt-in-your-mouth tender, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully presented. It showcases their commitment to high-quality sourcing. Wood-Fired Octopus: Impeccably charred on the outside while remaining incredibly tender on the inside, avoiding the chewiness that trips up lesser kitchens. Gnocchi Amatriciana: Absolute pillows of perfection. The handmade gnocchi holds onto the rich, savory, and slightly smoky Amatriciana sauce beautifully. Olive Oil Cake: A phenomenal finish. It's dense yet moist, perfectly sweet, and lets the fruity notes of a high-quality extra virgin olive oil shine. Note for pizza lovers: While LUCA used to sling their famous wood-fired pies at the main restaurant, they actually moved their entire pizza operation to focus on it full-time. If you are specifically craving their incredible blistered crusts, you'll want to head to Pizzeria LUCA, their second location over at The Crossings (Christopher Place). It's a bit more casual but carries the exact same ingredient-driven ethos.Five stars all day. Make your reservations weeks in advance--you'll need them!

We enjoyed our wine, olive appetizer and entrees. I got the ravioli and my wife enjoyed the guinea hen dish. The portions here are not large, so it's good to get a few dishes. The ambience in the side dining room was nice and much easier to converse in than the louder, main room. Our server was very knowledgeable and excited about the menu. The not so good: The wait between our appetizers and entrees was nearly an hour. We had another event to get to and were somewhat pressed for time.
