I made a return trip to the World's Largest Chest of Drawers in High Point, NC. It was getting some…read morework done during my stop, so it had a fence around it. The best place to park is likely at the lot across the street. The Chest of Drawers is on a one-way street, so you might need to plan which lane to get in if traffic is heavy. High Point is considered the "furniture capital of the world." So the 38 feet high road side attraction is fitting. The piece was originally built in 1926 to welcome people to the area and promote the furniture. The design was different, and the bureau was smaller and had a mirror. It was painted white with floral accents. It wasn't a functioning piece of furniture as the drawers didn't open. Then in 1996, Sid Lenger, a High Point craftsman and designer, transformed the piece. He wanted a proper chest of drawers, so he designed and built one with hefty brass handles. This version also doesn't open, but is meant to look like a more realistic piece of high-end furniture. He also added the two pairs of six-foot-tall socks to acknowledge the hosiery industry. I hope whatever work is being done to the chest of drawers preserves the cherry wood finish's color as intended.

Remodeled in 1996, this is the new structure. Steel framing and stucco, it stands 38 feet high with simulated brass handles. It's starting to grow with more chain restaurants coming to town like Cracker Barrell, Applebees, iHOP, Panera Bread, Starbucks and others. There's plenty of great local flavor as well like JB's, Bagels & Brew, and Little Richards. We also have one of the best parks in the state, Tanglewood Park where there is great golf, swimming, hiking, Christmas lights, and the NC Wine Festival. We've been here 11 years and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Dang, bad timing on our part. We still enjoyed walkin around town and seeing what we could see from the outside. I know my grandma really wanted to see the shops, though. All we were able to do is see the park which was open. That was pretty cool. There is an old jail there when you first drive in. And a bunch of old mining equipment. The coolest part of a crevice in the rock. There is a small set of stairs which goes down deep enough to see it. I don't know why that as so cool but it was. Since we wanted to see the shops and looked to see that they should be open on Sundays, we came back just a couple of days after we first came to Gold Hill. Struck out again! The shops still weren't open. It was a little early (11:00ish AM). We were hoping and expecting at least a couple of the shops to be open. What a bummer that they were not. Maybe the fall is off season and the summer would be better. I don't know. But we had just wasted another trip trying to see this place and ALL that is has to offer. So, 3 stars for now based on what we did see. Maybe if I can come back and go into some of the shops some time then I can reevaluate and increase the star rating.

I think that you can see Chateau Morrisette Vineyard & Winery from here. You can certainly see something that looks like a vineyard & winery. Chateau Morrisette is not our only area winery though. Local "Pro" tip: Stop at Lover's Leap and get that view but then drive into Fred Clifton Park right next to it and follow (on foot) the signs to the overlook.
