The downtown streets, particularly the three-block stretch of Main St., is dressed for the occasion. But it's not overdone, and that's an important point, because that would be easy to do. Touristy overkill (eg., say Gatlinburg, Myrtle Beach or Wisconsin Dells, where things are not just overdone, but are burnt to a crisp) ruins the experience. The highlight, of course, is the Andy Griffith Museum. It is small but does a great job of highlighting his life, particularly for those of us for whom Andy was part of our formative years. Andy Griffith's childhood home in one of the surrounding neighborhoods is now administered by a local hotel and you can stay there overnight if you wish (and can get a reservation). Downtown there is another museum (an area history musuem) that was closed when we were there, but I would have loved to have visited. It's a pleasure to spend a half-day or perhaps a full day meandering the commercial district of Mayberry...er...Mt. Airy. It's part shopping fun and part stimulation of nostalgia. It's still a glimpse of small-town America, or at least that of a small town in the South. The highlights among the shops include Opie's Candy Store, Pages Bookstore and Bear Creek Gifts and Candy Kitchen. And the Floyd's Barber Shop storefront was a fun find. There was an antique mall that was closed at the time we were there, but might have been interesting to explore as well. For anyone who is/was an Andy Griffith fan, this is a must one-day stopover if you are passing through or nearby the area. We did not regret it and, in fact, we would not mind another stop sometime in the future.
