What a cool art installation in such an unassuming part of High Point, near downtown. "Little…read moreSally" is the name of the giant wooden troll sculpture in High Point. It's one of many trolls around the world made out of recycled materials by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. High Point is lucky to have one of these, and it's fun and free to check out. My wife and I took my nieces to see Little Sally. A small line of families with children had built up to see and take pictures with the troll. The troll is hidden from street view, inside a small wooded area, so there's a fun "discovery" aspect to it. We parked in the large unpaved lot at the corner of W Green Dr and W Grimes Ave. Other folks parked closer, across the street in the parking lot of 711 W Grimes Ave. At the time of writing this, the building there appears to be vacant, as does the building in the same block as Little Sally. I'm pretty sure this part of town has seen better days. This project is what you call low-cost urban revitalization. Go to trollmap.com to see a map of all the trolls. There are several in North Carolina, mostly in Raleigh (Dix Park has five). Little Sally was unveiled in 2025. Dambo's first troll was "Hector the Protector," installed in Puerto Rico in 2014.

The John Coltrane Statue is located in Downtown High Point, NC at the intersection of S. Hamilton…read moreSt. and Commerce Ave (John Coltrane Way) Parking is available nearby at City Hall. I didn't see that with the construction and detours, so I parked in a tow-away zone right in front of the eight-foot monument. No, I didn't get a ticket, but I didn't stay as long as I would have liked either. The statue is 8 feet high, made of bronze and created by Thomas Jay Warren. The statute depicts Coltrane with his tenor saxophone. It was dedicated on September 20th, 2006, on what would have been Coltrane's 80th birthday. I liked that there was a storyboard about John Coltrane and his career to read, and that there was a nearby historical marker. "My music is the spiritual expression of what I am ~ my faith, my knowledge, my being." Coltrane was born in Hamlet, NC, but moved to High Point as an infant and grew up living with his extended family. Coltrane grew up with music; his father played the ukulele, and his mother was a trained singer and pianist. Coltrane first started playing the clarinet and alto horn. Then, at William Penn High School, he joined the band and started playing the saxophone. Coltrane found solace in music after the deaths of his father, grandfather and uncle. Coltrane moved to Philadelphia and joined the Navy. He collaborated with other legends like Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. He overcame his addiction to drugs and alcohol. His "spiritual awakening" led him to more spiritual music. Coltrane's career was cut short as his untimely death from liver cancer took him at age 40. But he left a lasting legacy with albums such as Blue Train, Giant Steps and A Love Supreme. .

Over the years this place has improved significantly, so 4 stars stacked against other towns of its size. Info - Population about 5,300 - County seat for Davie County - Lots of rural areas outside the town - Right off I40 - Part of the Piedmont Triad - Daniel Boone lived here at one time and his parents are buried here Pros - Convenient to Winston-Salem, Statesville, Salisbury and Lexington - Great place to live while working in WS. 20 - 25 minute drive. - I40 access - High speed Internet available - Nice historic downtown with local restaurants (serving booze), shops, and other places - The north side by I40 has Lowes, Super Wal-Mart, fast food and other shops - ABC store now in town - Decent selection of restaurants all over - Real Estate prices are better here than closer to WS, but trending up Cons - Not a lot of public parks but getting better - Food delivery options are basically pizza, with Grubhub and Uber Eats offering only about 1/2 dozen options - Forget about getting an Uber or cab here. - The south side is a work in progress. A new park is there to help the economic developing in the south but COVID has been a damper on that.
