The kid at the bar area (where for some reason is where the shrimp is prepared) grabbed a handful of shrimp, shuffled through them, counted them and dropped some on a plate. Crab cake look like tiny paddy nothing to do with real crab cake served evrywhere else, but the worse was smell kind off rotten fish . After first bite I could not stand it and took it back to kitchen , I asked nicley if they have anything fresh. They offered fried cod . 3 minutes later I got my half raw fried cod . We did not a risk to even try, I have shredded it in pices to show the chef and returned back on the counter . I was just so disappointed. I did not even bother to have my money back , we just left and decided to have proper dinner when we get home .On my way back home called the place and spoke with manager , there was not simple apology , he said that all they serve is frozen food exept salmon , after all he hunged up on me . Stay away or you fall at risk to poison your familly . I just hope that customers will leave and they get bankrupt one of these days . It is my first that bad expierience ever at the shore !!! Just so you know - Order sandwiches and fried food at the main window. Order RAW food at the bar. No service at table - carry your tray, get some napkins and meet at a picnic table on the deck with an umbrella overlooking the bayside, pretty sweet. Great prices for fresh seafood. RAW bar was excellent - oysters, clams, scrimps. The fried calamari was good but DO NOT get there buffalo sauce on it. I thought it would be a good idea but NO! Stop yourself. As another reviewer said, I love this place for what it is. I think the 3.5 rating that Yelp shows is accurate but I had to round up for nostalgia's sake. It's nothing fancy and half the menu is fried, but it's still a great experience. You can even dock your boat here and come up for dinner! I must say that a lot of the staff here is miserable. Granted, it's mainly younger kids working there but I don't really see that as a reason you can't be friendly. When we went to go pick up our food the girl working as a cashier was complaining to her coworker about how they "hadn't even gotten good tips tonight". Welcome to the service industry sweetie, here's a tip: smile, and respond when customers say thank you. Regardless of that it's still a nice place and you really can't beat the location. If you're in the market for seafood it's probably a cheaper option than Bahr's (although fairly pricey for what you get). If you aren't a seafood fan they do have some other basic options, ie. chicken fingers, burgers, hot dogs. And check out Carton Brewing's White Whale beer they offer there! It was absolutely great. The guy behind the bar described it as an IPA, but it has a Belgian taste to it as well, I loved it. This place is a Jersey classic so definitely check it out for the experience! read more

Moby's, the shake shack of Sandy Hook. It is a cool place where you order any type of seafood you can imagine at the window, get a number and wait until you are called over the loud speaker. I just wish the food would match the expectation. I go with some oysters, fish sandwich and some corn on the cob. My only thing with this place is the food and then the bread they serve the sandwiches on, it is a cold roll that takes away from the fish. The fish sandwich is always bland so you need to add salt n' peppa, corn is good but would be better if they add warm butter on top instead of handing you cold pats. The best thing is raw food, not amazing but for a munchie it is ok. They have a bar - beer & wine served with attitude that leaves you with a bad taste, ignore that behind the bar. Now my other thing with Moby's is their FLY issue and they have a serious one. They need to do something, they are everywhere and it gets really uncomfortable to eat. Sit on the first tables seems it is less aggravating there or go top and add some extra protein. May need some after a day of tanning :) read more

The qualms which many Yelpers seem to have with this spot are valid, but I would encourage them to be mindful of the sort of establishment Moby's is. Its snackbar atmosphere is casual and in turn, offers a relaxing experience. The young staff does a good job from what I've seen. I was shocked by the shucking abilities the college-aged raw bar employee yielded. They are clearly trained. The oysters ($2.25 ea.) were fresh and tasty, but what set them apart was the house-made cocktail sauce. I couldn't get enough. The rough shrimp ($7.99 for 6) were good, too. They were out of soft shell crabs which was the main reason I took the ride. It worked out quite well, as it gives me another excuse to return. The crab cake sandwich ($14.99) I settled for was not heavily ridden with bread and had good flavor. The rolls were eh, but this is minor; the seafood shines regardless. My brother's lobster roll ($19.99) was packed to the point of overflow which is a wonderful "problem" to have. The price was a bit steep, but diners will know why after their first or second bite, I'm sure. All of the dishes boasted freshness and quality and the ambiance offers accessibility and a fantastic view of Sandy Hook and beyond that, New York City. I'll likely be back within the next few weeks for the soft shell crab which I like to accredit as the raison d'etre of Moby's locale popularity. read more

Every time I head to sandy hook, I want to try this place and finally got to. The best part is you can wear your beach clothes and not feel underdressed. You order your food and drinks at a window and they call your number when ready. Seating is picnic tables right on the water. I was excited to try their lobster roll, went with half because I also wanted to try their fried clams. Lobster roll is nothing to rave about and if I come back would not order it again. It's more of a lobster salad (bland) in a bun with fries. The fried clams on the other hand were delicious. Not too much coating and great flavor! You can tell they were fresh. They give you a good size portion of them also. Writing this review makes me want a basket of them right now!! My husband had the fried shrimp platter and had no complaints. This place is awesome. If you are looking for good seafood, outdoor waterside seating, and good value, then visit Moby's. It's in the same lot as Bahr's, but a lot more casual. You order your food and alcohol at different counters and when your order is ready then they call you by number. It was a bit nerve racking today since it was chilly and breezy, but just remember that they're actually cooking your food fresh so it might take a few minutes before your order comes out. People that arrived after us that ordered burgers and hot dogs got their food pretty quickly. We ordered the fisherman's sampler (1lb lobster, shrimp, scallops, and clam strips w/ fries) and another clam strip platter (w/ fries) so the order took a little longer, but it was so worth it. The food is fresh, moist, and crispy yet tender. We will visit every time we are in the northern Jersey Shore area :) read more

I had a perfect lunch here last Saturday, with my 9 year old son. I ate a dozen super fresh, plump raw clams for $9 and he had a foot long hot dog with fries for $6.50. Drinks were a local IPA for me for $6 and he had a soda. I didn't measure it but I'm a contractor and pretty sure the hot dog was more like 14 inches and the fries were excellent. The kids who work here are very cute and sweet, esp. the teenager who seems to have recently learned to shuck clams. Attractive location, disappointing food, reluctant service, insulting policy. The steamers (small order had only 6 for ten bucks!) tasted like either they came from foul water or they had died and begun to spoil before cooking. Same with the lobster - two very small shedders for $29.99, also with the taste of death and spoilage about them. Both the lobsters and clams had the same overtone. It wasn't extreme enough to make them inedible (I didn't get sick), but I've had better - everywhere else. When I noticed no lobster cracker on the tray, I walked back to get one, only to be asked for a $1 deposit. I've never experienced this anywhere else... I'm not accustomed to being treated as a likely thief. The owners should go to some seafood places around the northeast and study how they preserve and prepare food, and treat their customers. The place is amazing. You are sitting exactly on the water. The view is so cool. On the terrace part they have benches which look so nice and make you feel like you are in the school canteen. Wasn't bad! We stopped in here while boating, as they have a dock you can land at and walk up to the restaurant. It was the traditional lame beach-type service from a pack of 14 year olds for sure, but the food was not as bad as I was expecting. I had clam strips sandwich and fries, which were both better than they had any right to be, as well as freshly fried. The staff at the counter did seem very clueless and were not able to answer super obvious questions, but that's neither here nor there. They apparently have beer, but the staff, being under-age, need a bartender to get the beer (fair enough) but they don't know what beers there are, nor can they answer when I asked, nor could they find someone who COULD, but they could get someone to get me a beer if I knew what I wanted already? Apparently Memorial Day weekend broke Moby's. We've been coming here for years, and it's always been pretty good fried food and beer. Our first visit this year and it was a mess. We ordered our fried crab cake sandwiches and fries at 6:50 and at 7:50 we still had no idea when our food was coming up. We ended up getting a refund and heading somewhere else. We were also told they were out of lobster rolls, but an hour later people were ordering them with no problem. We're chalking this experience up to holiday weekend, but this does make us think twice about coming back. read more

The rolls were store bought. Potato store bought rolls. Big yikes.... Also the cocktail sauce was a disgusting ketchup and horseradish rip off. Please don't visit this place. Don't give them money.
