    The Coastal Carpenter

Before you hire this company, hear my story. I certify that every word of it is true…read more Before we moved into a new residence, I hired Coastal Carpenter to install an aluminum fence around the perimeter of the backyard. The price seemed fair, although not necessarily a bargain, and the references were good. The fence was to be installed on the property lines, which I approved. Toward the end of the installation, the workmen hit three irrigation lines. The owner told me that the fence line and the irrigation line were traveling along the same path, meaning that my choices were to reroute the irrigation lines or move the fence inside the lot line. That did not seem to be a great option, since the sprinkler heads would be outside the fence, but I chose it because I did not want to go to the expense of relocating the irrigation lines. After the installation was completed and the company paid, I discovered from a neighbor who had conducted a survey of his adjoining property that the lot line actually was a full FOUR TO FIVE FEET outside the irrigation lines. That meant that the fence could have been located several feet outside the irrigation line, avoiding the problem altogether and preserving about five feet of my property. I gave Coastal Carpenter credit for knowing where the property lines were before starting work on the fence. It was on the basis of their faulty design that the work was approved. Once the problem was brought to the attention of the owner, he assumed NO responsibility for the error, saying only that "you approved the project and the lines." He is correct, but only because I foolishly assumed he knew where the lot lines were. His option to me: I can pay him--again--to move the fence to the location it should have been built in the first place. I have waited three days following the discussion with the owner in order to give him time to reconsider his choices. He seems not to be interested in doing so. Mty only option is to share my story hoping to help some other potential customer avoid the same mistake I did by trusting this company.

This was about $400 more than another company had quoted me, but I liked the worker (had good vibes) and he seemed knowledgeable. At the end of June, a little over 30 days since I received the estimate, I called to set up the job and was told the original workman no longer worked there and it was past 30 days, they would have to send someone else out to give a new estimate. The new guy was not as personable (gave me carpetbagger vibes iykyk) and kept saying this was a huge job, (the job was the inside of a tiny house of about 900 sq ft.), but that was not the worst of it. He wanted $4,620 just to do the painting, not including any of the sheetrock repair. So, in about 4 weeks they went up another $400, plus the $400 more than the other bid, and were no longer going to include the Sheetrock repair, which the other company included. Of course, I could not swallow that much more than other bids. I had to go with another company. During that same time frame, I had also kept trying to find other jobs around the house because I liked Nick (office guy), but it was the same story. They were always coming in higher than other companies and sometimes much higher. Today, I thought I would give them one more chance to earn my business. When I called I was greeted by a rude woman who kept saying they didn't have anyone to do the job and wouldn't for a long time. The job was to stain a deck, walkway, and stairs. I guess if you have money to burn, don't want to get any other estimates from established companies that have been in the area longer, and evidently now are willing to wait "a long time"; then you could give them a try. I will not try to work with them again.
