We loved the beef goulash. It was delicious. Salad with feta was fresh and tasty. Gnocchi was nothing to write home about. Actually the gnocchi was called 'potatoes' on the menu. I guess it was the 'Czech way' but the waitress literally ignored us for 15 mins while we were standing at the door. Decor is rustic I would say. My Favorite spot to eat at in Prague. Mlejnice Garden staff is quite friendly and the ambiance is very nice. Duck leg with blueberry sauce,Spicy marinated beef roast, grilled salmon and gnocchi with blue cheese, leeks and garlic or potatoes with leeks blue cheese and garlic take your pick the menu is pretty tasty looking and extensive. I am not one to judge what authentic Czech cuisine is and I shouldn't be. While I do believe you can learn what a food should taste like it is your experiences during your upbringing that develops your judgement of good food (otherwise, known as food that you like).This is my perspective of Mlejnice and so it's true for Czech cuisine in general. While I am sure there are many that would rave about thy cuisine and would gladly eat this over tomahawk steaks, bacon and butter fried chicken any day. No...not me. I prefer the latter. This feels as authentic as it gets for a tourist town. A giant, deep fried, lardy knee of a hog. With it's crispy crackling and that intoxicating porky lardy aroma, it is heaven for just about the first 5 bites or so. After that it is just a struggle to stomach all that fat. Yes, as a bacon lover I must confess even I was overwhelmed by the fattiness and bacony aroma; I digress. Other than the overwhelming porkiness there really isn't a whole lot of flavours or herbs. It's just plain old fried fatty pork. The pierogies and sauerkraut are less daunting but just as bland in flavour profile. The deep fried sauerkraut might just be the only highlight of the meal aside from the beer as usual. All in all I would still recommend this place for the tourist in you. It does seem unpretentiously authentic and the portions are insanely large. While the cost of your health may take a huge hit after devouring that hog's knee, you can at least take comfort in knowing that your wallet will be spared. read more

On our last night in Prague, we hadn't had the best Czech food but I wanted to give it one last chance, so we came here. Oh my god. The best decision I could have made. This meal is in my top 3 out of six different European countries. My boyfriend and I both got the beef roast with green beans and chips. The meat was so perfectly seasoned, the green beans were to die for and the potatoes were a perfect addition to dip into the sauce from the steak. I'm telling you... I would come back to Prague JUST for that steak. I wish we would have found this place sooner in our stay so I could have had it again. As someone in this review-section pointed out, we sought a place to give our tourist-stomach a go. Plus points for the nice waitresses and the cosy atmosphere. Although I'm not certain if all those farmer-objects fit the place, they did give you that 'authentic' feels. Sadly the food wasn't as good as we expected. As a starter we had deep fried onion rings. These were actually pretty nice: it only was a shame that we only ate half of it when the maincourses arrived. For my partner this was de spareribs (with a potato in foil) and for me duck in blueberry sauce. The meat was a bit too dry to our taste, and although it was accompanied with sauce (the ribs as well as the duck) the overall flavour should have been stronger. I also ordered a side dish salad: some chopped fresh tomatoes, cucumber, mais and slaw. Nothing bad about it, but special neither. I guess that as a vegetable-lover I shouldn't be eating in a Czech restaurant, but when the meat also isn't good, you won't convince me. This was my wife's and my best meal in the Czech Republic. I had the pork knee, which was gigantic and fantastic- one of the few meals in Europe that bested me. My wife likened their flavor to Mexican carnitas. She had the pork schnitzel, which was delicious as well. This place was amazing! i found it through yelp when i was staying in prague, it was a bit of a commute from where i was staying but this place is centrally located and very close to the charles bridge. Their food was really good, i didnt try their beer but my friends who did get the pilsner thats advertised every where said it was so-so. Their spinach is AMAZING! i havent had such good spinach since peter luger, and i dont even like spinach so for me to say its good..must tell you something! I had the beef goulash and it was sooo good, it was like beef stew in a bread bowl.. i would highly recommend it! As with most establishments in Prague, this one was cheap. Looking like a hole in the wall, the restaurant actually offers many seats inside, so the wait is not long. The goulash comes in a rye bread bowl, which you don't have to eat if you're disinclined. I do recommend it though, since the goulash itself is thick, meaty, and feeling. Additionally, the spicy sausage with potato salad and puréed horseradish and Dijon mustard was delicious, enough to split among two. Around the restaurant, various young slim Asian women were eating l chunks of shoulder, knee, and other large joints of cattle. Had the perfect, traditional dinner last night. The atmosphere is fun, the service is friendly and professional, just a nice start in Prague. Really great food and service in an adorable setting. My boyfriend and I visited their first location and was told there would be an hour wait, however the server offered to call the other location and reserve us a table. He gave us a map and we made the brief 5 minute walk to the second location. We were seated immediately. I had the goulash and my boyfriend had the ribs. We shared a grilled sausage. So, a surprising find with this one. Being located just a few steps from Old Town Square, I set my expectations low even though the reviews on multiple review sites were in the exceptional category. First, the entire restaurant is non-smoking. HOORAY. Second, there is limited seating, perhaps only about a dozen tables, so reservations are highly recommended. We popped in on a Saturday (during the off-season) around noon and there were two other tables seated but within a half an hour, all tables were taken and there were people waiting for a table. Third, service is hit-or miss. Our drink order was taken rather quickly after being seated. Our drinks arrived rather quickly after we ordered. Our food, however, took approximately 45 minutes to arrive after we ordered. The hubby blames this on the kitchen not being ready for the lunch rush but I don't agree. Tables who were seated 20 minutes after we ordered were served their food before us. All this said, I do, to some extent, expect this type of service in Europe. I mean, this isn't the US of A where servers depend on tips to make a decent wage. Service aside, the food was excellent. The goulash (served in a bread bowl) was unlike any goulash I had eaten in Prague before. It was more of a Hungarian goulash. It was spicy and thick. The bread bowl was also delicious. It had sort of sweet taste to it. something I would not have enjoyed if eaten by itself but rather enjoyed with the spicy goulash. The hubby ordered the pork knee (aka knuckle) and it was large enough to feed two hungry adults (with an accompanying side of potatoes or bread or something). I do have to note that he said that it was not the best pork knuckle he's had before but said that it was still quite tasty. This is just on a side street off the main square; quite hard to find so make sure you bring a detailed map! Inside, its a small pub/bar style with wooden tables, and its definitely caters for tourists, but its one of the best value Czech restaurants we came across in Prague. We fully recommend the pork knuckle, which is a full 1kg and good to share between two or three, and only costs 230 CZK! Beware, it is really salty but I didn't start noticing that until I got to the bottom of the bowl. My aunt and I both got the roast duck. Again, it was a very generous portion. Mlejnice is in one of the small hidden alleys close to the Astronomical clock. It was a very cold and rainy evening so I was craving for some hot soup. The Beer Goulash sounded like a great choice and in one bite, I knew it was! Tender chunks of beef in a deliciously thick and smooth goulash served in a bread bowl. The bread bowl itself had a nice and crunchy exterior. I kept nibbling away at the bread bowl and couldn't decide if I liked the bread better than the goulash but at the end, I decided that the bread bowl was a close second to the goulash. The ambiance is best described as cozy with an interesting array of decorations hanging from the ceiling and walls. Wonderful place with great Czech food slightly off the beaten path. We ordered the gnocchi in cream sauce (pillowy and delicious), a roast chicken entree and the roast duck with apple and calvados. While the duck was slightly overcooked for me, the apple sauce was great and had a silky finish. We also shared a pork knuckle -- deliciously moist inside with a nicely crisped skin. It was also seasoned very well. The beer selection highlighted the local Pilsner Urquell but they also had a bunch of other beverages to choose from (mulled wine, spirits, etc...) The pork knee was excellent (love the mustard/horseradish spread that came on the side), and was a giant portion. The goulash was also great. The cheese was good, but not my preferred flavor profile. Nestled in a little alleyway just off Old Town, Mlejnice offers a cozy atmosphere to enjoy local treats. The place is usually packed so I suggest making a reservation or you could be waiting quite a while for a seat. The portions are ample and would do nicely to share. I made the pleasant mistake (although I paid for it later) of ordering the ribs for myself. I don't think many people do this because the waiter sort of gave me a look when I commenced to Flintstone-style, greasy-handed, sauce-all-over-the-face chowing down on those bad boys. In the middle of the epic feast, the waiter brought over a whole roll of paper towels just for me. Not my most civilized moment, but those ribs were awesome.
