I really enjoyed the atmosphere and vibe of this place. Several comfy seating options - table with chairs, sleek couches, oversized bean bags. There were all sorts of games available for play, including a jumbo Jenga! Operation is a little harder than I remember, but then again, I did have few cocktails! Their home page says don't bring groups of more than 6. I wouldn't bring more than 2. Lots of tables for 2 that you are not permitted to bring together for 4, or 6. Extremely unaccommodating, "The answer is no, what's the question" kind of attitude throughout. They make a big deal out of no tipping here and it clearly reflects in the attitude of the staff who are not interested in the grand experiment and have no motivation whatsoever to be friendly or helpful. I'm not exaggerating when I say at one point we were sneered at. They make some "classic" drinks but they don't make them well and their wine list would only do well in a high-schoolers basement when their parents were away. Came here for the first time on a Friday evening with some friends and stayed for several hours. I ordered their Ginger Spice mocktail. What's Hot - Menu variety. They have their own in-house created cocktails, traditional cocktails, beers, and mocktails (nonalcoholic drinks). There's a small food menu, popcorn, and a little water cooler. - Quality. Their ginger spice mocktail was delicious. There's even a splash of cinnamon on the top of my mocktail. Their drinks, including mocktails, are clever and well put together. - You can bring your own food! They have a policy that allows customers to bring their own food, which is really rare, but hella cool. For example, we started with a group of 5 and then became a group of 9. We ordered 2 rounds of pizza, which came out to 4 pizzas total. The staff were accommodating and gave us paper plates and napkins. When we finished our pizzas, they cleared away our trash, including the takeout boxes for the pizza. - Service. Their staff is excellent. Nice and helpful. They offer free popcorn and there's a small water cooler, by the bar, where you can get cups of water. I like being able to get my own water, rather than having to always get it from the staff. Additionally, the staff bring around and offer plates of free popcorn to their customers, which is awesome. - Price. I arrived at their happy hour time, which begins at 6pm. My mocktail's original price is $6, but I was charged $4 (and some change). - No tipping. It's rare to find a shop that has a no tipping policy. This place pays their staff a decent/living wage (I was told $15/hr), so they do not ask their customers to tip their staff. I'm impressed. Common sense and a good policy where the staff don't have to rely on tips. Observation - Space. It's not a bad layout and this is a decent space. However, be aware that this place can get busy fast, which means it can be easy to run out of room. Depends on when you come here. A really cool bar with tons of board games, a big screen, and bean bags. We came on a Tuesday night and there were a decent amount of people. We ordered at the bar and all cocktails were $2 off since it was their happy hour! I had the twist on them haters, which was delicious. It had rosemary, pink lemonade, and hits of pink peppercorn. Another nice feature is that they have free popcorn to munch on. The only thing that was pretty limiting was their food menu. We ordered some pretzels, hummus, and pepperoni rolls for the table. It's been over a year since my initial review, and I have to say that Mixtape really stepped up their cocktail game! Their new menu has lots of interesting signature craft cocktails that use fresh, interesting ingredients and pack more of a punch than when they first opened. Nice plays on some classics. Oh, and they added a classic cocktails section to the menu, which is quite welcomed! I love the comfortable lounge atmosphere, retro vibe, cool decor with cassette tapes and music embedded subtly around the venue and in the art. The staff is very friendly, as well. Also - free popcorn! It can be a little too loud on the weekends to hold a conversation, but still better than most bars. Drinks are made with love, so the line can get a bit backed up - but I actually prefer the care of quality over quick/mindless bartending at other places. read more

This is one of the most hip bars I've been to in Pittsburgh. There's great music playing in the background, beanbags to sit on, and (interestingly) a no-tip policy because they pay their bartenders a living wage with paid sick leave. All tips are donated to charity! The signature cocktails were delicious too -- let the bartender know whether you're looking for sweet, bitter, sour, or herbal flavors, and they'll suggest the best recommendation. I am so happy I finally got to check out Mixtape! This is a super chill vibe with comfy seats, cool music, and decent drink selections. We went on a Saturday night around 10, and we didn't have any trouble getting a table for 4 people. If you have a bigger group, you may want to get there a little earlier just to be safe. I liked that you just walked up to the bar to get your drinks, so you weren't always looking for a server. It's a small enough place that we didn't have to wait in line at all for drinks, so it was a really efficient system IMO. Mixtape is the best! I couldn't say enough great things about this place. I've been 10+ times since they opened and always suggest to my friends as a place to meet for a Happy Hour during the week. Currently, they have $2 off seasonal beers and $2 off signature cocktails. My opinion is that the cocktails are the better deal. ;) You can get beer anywhere, but the cocktails at Mixtape are the reason I keep returning. Well, that and I asked for a Beyonce-themed cocktail and they delivered! The bartenders are always so pleasant and careful to get your order just right. Without a doubt, hey do try to treat their customers pretty well. As for the "door people", I still find a bit crass for my liking though. I was looking for a chill place for a first date and I was so impressed with everything Mixtape has to offer. There is a variety of seating options which made conversation easy and very comfortable. We sat directly across from the TV projector on the half circle couch and they had the movie JAWS on. There are a ton of board games to pick from scattered around the bar which a lot of people there were playing. The bar is counter service and the tips are included in the price of your drink, drinks were reasonably priced. Even though this is a counter service set up the bar staff still walked around to check on everyone and brought us popcorn. They do offer some other snack options for purchase but you can bring in food from elsewhere which I thought was really neat. Lastly, I was really impressed that they donate all of the extra tips to charity. I have only been here once so I am not sure if they cycle out the charities but the charity that was posted that night was Animal Rescue League & Western PA Humane Society and I am an animal lover so that made me love this place a little more. I loved this option as a spot for free wifi, coffee and/or craft cocktails, and a great environment for productivity. The staff I encounter was super friendly and made an awesome cocktail for me to enjoy while cranking out a few emails. I chose the signature "Hot and Dangerous" cocktail because I tend to enjoy spice to my drink - great choice on the signature list! Mixtape gets 2 stars only because I've been here before and had good experiences all around. Yesterday though changed my opinion and not for the better. There is a fundamental issue with customer service here, I'll explain. I walked in late for a business meeting. I like scheduling meetings at Mixtape because it's not too loud, there's always available seating and usually, everyone can find something on the menu they like. I also like supporting women-owned businesses and I love their fair-wage standard. So, I was late and parked my car down the street. In my flustered state, I forgot my ID. I'm in my late 30s and, even though I like to think I look young for my age, I definitely do not look like I'm in my early 20s. That's whatever, I understand that laws exist that make it so bars have to card people. However, I have never been to a bar that required ID to stay that didn't card you at the door which would be such a better policy for a multitude of reasons. In this case, a door-person would have prevented me from feeling like I never want to visit Mixtape ever again, which is currently my state. I get to the counter and order the most expensive drink on the menu, not purposely. Clearly, I'm going to spend money. The bartender asks for my ID, at which point I'm like "Silly me, I left it in the car". Oh well, I think I'll just order a diet coke and snacks to share with my "date". Nope. I was told that if I couldn't produce an ID, I'd have to fill out a bunch of paperwork or (since she looked at me in a way that said "I'm not going to produce the paperwork"), I needed to leave. At this point, I'm starting to think this is ridiculous since I've been to hundreds of bars in my life and this scenario has never played out. Obviously annoyed, I tell my business friend the situation and leave to get my ID out of my car. I come back and hand my open wallet (which has an ID window clearly showing my PA drivers license) to the bartender, who can't even be bothered to look and, in my mind, is treating me as if she'd rather I just leave. She tells me I have to take it our of the wallet and physically hand it to her. Again, I'm in my late 30s, clearly not afraid to spend money, and a customer she had to know was already put out - proverbial straw meet camel. At this point, I figure I'm either dealing with the most clueless human on the planet or someone going out of their way to be a Dbag. So, I take out my ID, hand it to the other bartender who was much nicer, but also, when I mention I'm 37, instead of just apologizing says that they're following the law (if that's so, then every bar I've been to in Pittsburgh, Philly, New York, Chicago, etc. is breaking the law).... I'm done. I don't buy anything, sit there and have my meeting, and leave most likely never to return. I'd rather give almost anywhere else my business. If you are going to have this ridiculous policy of "Show us your ID or get out", then you need a door person. No one can be angry with a door person. With a door person, it's very clear that you can't get in without an ID. With a door person, you can have great customer service because that's all they do. Maybe this bartender was having a bad day, I don't know - but being nasty to a customer who is put-out can't be good for business. Circumvent that by having a person at the door - or don't, and have more experiences like this because I have to tell you your policy of letting people get settled, order, and THEN telling them that they have to leave is frustrating. UPDATE** Many thanks to the owner, Katie, for reaching out. I messaged you directly - it is appreciated! :) Even though I mentioned being less patient than normal on that day, I am usually a very understanding and easy-going person and realize that businesses have policies in place to protect themselves. However, the negative interaction I had with the worker in question, even when running late/flustered, was entirely avoidable. The other bartender, who didn't wait on me, was much nicer in our one interaction however, by that time, the situation had already escalated. A simple "I'm so sorry - I have to do this / this is our policy, etc, was the way to de-escalate this situation. The worker in question never apologized. In fact, I would say she escalated the situation in every possible way, first by telling me I needed to produce an ID or leave the premises, then by completely ignoring me - even as I waited patiently for her to finish working with another customer. In that moment, the correct course of action to further de-escalate the situation would have been to acknowledge my presence and let me know she'd be right with me. Instead, she completely ignored me. She never talked to or even looked at me again. Everyone has bad days and service-oriented jobs are so difficult - I do not want this worker to get into trouble, but I also don't feel bad in calling out the rudeness. ALSO they passed out free buttery popcorn that really hit the spot. I was here for it. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is bc the drinks were mega weak. Like, 'I cant tell tell if they messed up my order and gave me juice instead' weak. And i probably only have a drink every 3 months. The 3 other girls I was w agreed they were weak. At first glance, it's just another storefront in Garfield, but once you walk in you are met with a gorgeous interior, complete with couches and tables with hidden chairs great for seating lots of 30-something butts. And that's exactly the crowd to which Mixtape appeals. Sure, there were younger and older patrons present, but the general vibe is "semi-mature partier." Mixtape has also joined the ranks of Bar Marco in the tip-less world. Their employees are given a fair wage and benefits, so gratuities of any kind are gracious declined. Bonus - their late night happy hour boasts $1 off a bevy of beverages and half-off premium well liquors. In short, I was drinking Pinnacle and Diet Cokes all night long and could not have been happier. The DJ was perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him bounce to the beat. He is one of those DJs who is clearly so happy in his element. Bull Dawgs food truck was outside throughout the evening, but ran out of a few key items, so I passed on the Dawgs. Maybe next time. Mixtape is a cool little lounge space with a laidback vibe. The drink menu is extensive, and both their alcoholic and non-alcoholic options are delicious. The coffee is really good! The bartenders take their time crafting each drink, and even the non-alcoholic mocktails come out looking amazing. I wish I had gone to Mixtape when I was pregnant and trying to find good drinks while out with friends, instead of the sad options I had then. The drinks here are great, but the best part is the welcoming atmosphere. Whether you drink or not, whether you want to dance or not, whether you want to talk or not, you will be welcome and comfortable at Mixtape! Oh, and all of the employees I have interacted with, including the owners, have been friendly and helpful (and patient, because I am that annoying person who has to read everything on the menu before deciding what I want). It's so fun to have a fun yet intimate spot to go for drinks! My boyfriend and I came on a Friday night and brought our own food. Because they don't have a kitchen, you can order in or bring food from anywhere which is great! Mixtape is not the biggest venue, so I think it's probably better for small groups or couples to go. They do have happy hour which gets you $2 off their signature drinks, which are really unique craft cocktails! They really put a lot of effort into their drinks and it shows! Mixtape is a no tipping establishment, as they pay their workers a living wage, but if you do want to tip they donate the money to different charities which is awesome! They have a lot of different games to play which makes the experience even more fun! They also brought out popcorn which was the perfect compliment to our drinks! One more unique thing about Mixtape is the app that they use. If you are ordering beer you can use their app and skip the line, which is nice if you don't want to wait at the bar! We were visiting Pittsburgh for the weekend and were looking forward to trying Mixtape after the great reviews. We came at 8:30pm on a Saturday and it seemed like they had a good concept going on... board games, funky cocktails, 90s music playing. It was pretty empty when we got there, but we got a round of drinks to pass the time. We decided to go to Nico's bar down the street to get some cheap drinks and pass the time with the plan of coming back to mixtape when it was more poppin. We went back to mixtape around 10:30 and we were told by the bouncer that they were at maximum capacity. There were maybe 45 people in there and the place looked empty. Max capacity was 99. We saw multiple tables inside that were unoccupied. They refused a few other people while we were standing outside also. I just can't even believe that they would turn away customers when their bar was not even close to full. It didn't look much more exciting than when we first went in, so maybe we were spared in the end. If you're looking for a good, affordable time, save the hassle and go to Nico' s recovery room down the street instead of coming here. read more

I really loved the vibe in the place, a really laid back atmosphere. We decided to stop here after a event to have some cocktails. It was easy to find a place to park, we walked right in and up to the bar and the bartender explained the happy hour special is until 9 pm and it's $2 off the first two pages of signature cocktails off their menu, and $2 off the page of crafted beer. They have lounge chairs, tables, bean bag chairs to sit and just relax and chillthe music was great, they also have tv that you can watch if interested. I noticed people coming in with pizza from next door, so I guess you can bring your own food to eat while enjoying your beer and cocktails. The bartenders are friendly and upbeat. There are also board games in the back by the bar if that picks your interest, but we were fine just listening to the music and talking. My friends and I love this place. It's certainly our number-one go-to spot for a chill night. I'd say the most striking characteristic of Mixtape is that their environment is highly conducive to meeting new people, mixing and mingling. I have met so many new and unique people at Mixtape versus other bars in Pittsburgh. It's a staple in the Pittsburgh bar portfolio simply because of that. There's also an abundance of Pittsburgh pride here--you can tell the decor screams "we love it here, and we know you do too". As far as drinks go, I've never had a bad drink here. I remember distinctly their mocha stout, which they sprinkled chocolate along the rim of the glass. It was such a treat. They do get really busy sometimes though, and they actually do go from the bar to tables to deliver and take drink orders, but they've always been prompt with my orders. Also, all the bar staff are friendly--conversations are always plentiful and engaging. I do wish they published an event calendar on their website, because I remember stumbling upon theme or event nights before. Still, this place is great. I had a chocolate porter which they rimmed with some sort of fabulous chocolate graham cracker dust. It was on special too so I drank like 4 of them. Also had a pretzel which was yummy. I was starving and asked if they had other food too, and they graciously offered to let me bring in pizza from next door. The pretzel ended up satisfying me but I appreciated how chill they were.
