I haven't had Ethiopian food in many years and I was excited to see that Tampa has one! The food here was delicious. I had the red lentil vegetarian dish and Buticha (kind of like a hummus dip). The standout element of this restaurant is not the food though. You can sense that the restaurant embodies a sense of community for other Ethiopians and non-Ethiopians. When we were there, the other couple in the restaurant were clearly regulars and the owner took time to talk with them and catch up. We also witnessed a few families come in to gather for a post school day meal together. We will definitely be back! read more

First time at Mitmita & it didn't disappoint! We had lamb, beef & chicken & because they came with 2 veggies each, we were able to try almost the whole menu. I highly recommend getting extra injera, a spongy Ethiopian bread that takes place of utensils. That's right, you eat either your hands! For appetizers we ordered chicken and beef samosas. Athena is the owner, along with her husband Terr, and their beautiful daughter Makeda. After trying Queen of Sheeba I decided to give Ethiopian food another shot, like they say, always get a 2nd opinion. This place is located in strip center on W. Linebaugh Ave.. Mitmita seemed more authentic but I really have no way of knowing. The food was fresher but was also spicier. You get 2 Sambusa for $3 whereas the other place was $5 for one. I was right to think that the Queen place overpriced and not worth the money. I should haved rated them lower. The Sambusa here were better as well. The dish I had was Ye-Doro Watt and while spelled different was the same dish as I had at the other place. While flavors were similar, the food at Mitmita was obviously much better quality, was fresher and was a better value all around. I had the same wonderful beer and service here was better and quicker. While I am a novice on this type of cuisine, I know enough to reccomend this place over the other. There is not much of an ambiance here though. This kind of food is just not for me. read more

The Basics: Mitmita is an Ethiopian restaurant located in the Carrollwood area of Tampa. The restaurant is located in a strip mall and is a casual spot for some very delicious food. Things I like: I enjoyed all of the food we tried! The Sambusa was very flavorful and not greasy at all. The Beef and Lamb Tibbs were also good, but we preferred the lamb over the beef. The vegetables are my favorite part and four different kinds came with the meat dishes. The food was fresh and flavorful and the service was also great. Things I didn't like: Some of the beef pieces were pretty fatty and inedible. We preferred the lamb over the beef for this reason. I also wish a larger variety of vegetables came with the meat dishes. Overall, great Ethiopian food and a good business to support! I will certainly be back to try more variety here. read more

After several years, I finally had Ethiopian food again and Mitmita's did not disappoint! We arrived right at opening time and the owner was so friendly and helpful in guiding us in our choices, especially since it was my fiancé's first time trying this cuisine. I had a glass of the honey wine and thoroughly enjoyed it; not too sweet and perfect alcohol taste. We split an appetizer of beef samosas and will need two orders of that next time. Then we got a chicken and beef entrée. It was so delicious along with the various veggie sides that came with it. One of the sides had beets and I'm not typically a fan of beets, but these were good! This is the place to go if you're going to treat yourself out to eat. It won't be a disappointment where you wish you just ate at home and saved your money. I see why this place has five stars on yelp. It's phenomenal! I came on a Wednesday for lunch and although I was the only customer, I was not deterred by the lack of patrons. Family owned and operated, I was warmly greeted immediately upon arrival. Both employees with whom I had contact were genuinely kind and friendly. I started with the Sumbussa's and I picked the beef. It was so good, crispy, and flavorful that I immediately ordered the chicken. Boom--equally scrumptious. I seriously can't recommend one over the other, so Get BOTH! For my lunch I opted for the vegetarian platter, which includes lentils, corn, beans and carrots, greens, and beets and potatoes. Now let me tell you, I've never met a beet I've liked but these were actually good! The potatoes helped. Lastly, the Ethiopian beer is light and boasts a 5.5 abv. This is our favorite place for family dinners and to bring friends. The food is amazing. It's a different experience. You can be as adventurous as you want. I have had food so hot that I gasped for air and I have had raw meat flavored in there sauces. I knew what I was ordering. If you want something plain, get the chicken and stay safe with the sides. There is truly something there for the novice and even the pro foodie. The owners are sweet people. Athena has brought us cake to the table because she remembered it was my wife's birthday. Mitmita has gotten stellar reviews on Yelp, so I was excited to finally be in the area at lunch time. I ordered in person, and the woman helping me provided some good insight as to what to try. The dining room was empty at noon on a Friday, so there was plenty of parking in the strip mall parking lot out front. I ended up with an order of the vegetable sambusa and the Ye-doro Tibbs, which was chicken marinated with garlic. All the lunch meals came with either ice tea or lemonade, so I got the lemonade, which was good, but super sweet. I had groceries in the car, so the server was kind enough to bring my food order to my car when it was ready. I thought the food had a unique and tasty flavor, served as it was on a bed of injera bread (crepes made from teff, a cereal grain and barley, rich in iron and unique to Ethiopia) and topped with another serving of injera to scoop the food with. I did wish the food was a bit more interesting, though, especially the sides. It was honestly kind of a boring meal, which is surprising for Ethiopian food. My favorite part was actually the sambusas - deep fried and very crunchy and so full of flavor I didn't even need the dipping sauce. I definitely will be back and attempt to be a bit more adventurous with my ordering. read more

Wow... I enjoyed this. From the initial order over the phone to finishing it off at home, it was a wonderful experience. When I called, they answered quickly, were helpful and answered any questions I had about the food. I was surprised at the time it took (they told me 45 minutes)... but some of the cooking techniques do apparently require that, and it tells me that the Injera bread was cooked when I ordered it, rather than being pre-made. Good things do take a little more time, right? I arrived to pick it up, and the staff was very friendly. A darling young girl was in the front (obviously family). I love small family owned and run restaurants... and this one is definitely that. My order was ready on time, and I discussed the alleged lack of traditional heat with the lady who checked me out... and she stated (as mentioned in other reviews) that they try to keep things mild since many Americans don't like spicy heat. But she did offer to get me a small container of the Berbere spice to take home (good stuff... wonderful flavor and a nice heat level). Arriving home, I took pics of the takeout containers (as usual) and we sat down to eat. The injera was very good.... as was my Kay Wat Fit Fit. I thought the red lentils needed more spice (and flavor)... greens were very good. My girlfriend loved her Doro Wat, but was not too sure about the Injera (she has texture issues with some foods, lol)... but did enjoy it. The sambusas were delicious as was the Buticha. This has inspired me to learn to make Injera so I ordered some Teff flour. I will be using the Injera from Mitmita as a standard though, and suspect it will be hard to beat. This was a 45 minute ride and worth it 100%. We had the BEST waitress, Athena help us navigate the menu and selections. The food was WONDERFUL and the wine and beer were terrific. We opted to skip appetizers since we thought we might fill up too much. It was a great decision since the portions are generous. This was my third Ethiopian meal -once in Europe and once in Philadelphia. This was just delicious and did not disappoint. Well worth the trip...Plan to return for those appetizers and more. First time having Ethiopian food and definitely won't be the last. The decor is clad with traditional clothing, flags, and a variety of East African artefacts. We were greeted immediately when we walked in and were sat- the service is amazing! The owner is soooo nice and recommended great dishes in which we ordered. The honey wine had a unique flavor to it that I highly recommend, my boyfriend loved the beer he had 2 in total. Ordered some Sambusas that were eaten too quickly to take a photo of; one of each-my favorite was the chicken but all are really good. For entrees we ordered the lamb and fish tibbs and were told to eat the crepe that it's served on before eating the ones on the side, as it soaks up all the juices- it was delicious! My husband is a little bit picky so I decided to go on my own first, but I will definitely be taking him back here. Wow! After years of not having Ethiopian food, this place satisfied every craving and more! To start I had a hot tea and my boyfriend had a sweet iced tea. Fantastic service, but I found the food to be a bit bland. I'm not a huge expert on Ethiopian food. I've had it once in Ann Arbor, a couple times in Houston, once in Orlando, once in Los Angeles and once at another place in Tampa. I was disappointed with the other place in Tampa, so I was excited to try this one. Since I'm not an expert in the food I tend to judge it based on did I enjoy it. I always love getting the sampling platter so I got the Vegetarian combination. I found a majority of the options to be pretty tasteless. They all seemed very healthy, but bland. I did really enjoy the red lentil, but one out of five isn't a great ratio. I think there might be other dishes that are more flavorful, but I technically tried five dishes and wasn't a huge fan. The reason I gave them three stars is because it is locally owned and operated and our server was so nice. There were only three tables full on a Thursday night so we never felt rushed to leave. We were actually there chatting for two hours. I wouldn't say no if someone wants to come here, but I'll let them do the ordering! read more

Ethiopian food is definitely top 5 for me, I would choose it most days of the week. I've been fortunate enough to have a few Ethiopian coworkers in the past, and have been invited to their homes for meals which is an amazing experience (there's a lot of love in this food and culture y'all). Mitmita is a gem. The same quality and flavors as the home cooked Ethiopian I've had (which until Mitmita I haven't been able to find in any other restaurant). This was our first time eating Ethiopian cuisine. We had read other reviews and based on a personal recommendation plus yelp we decided to come and try it. The owners/operators, Athena and her husband are so welcoming and answered our questions, gave recommendations and engaged in friendly conversation with us throughout the evening. We each ordered sambusa as an appetizer and a different protein and variety of vegetables as a family platter so we could all try each other's choices. They serve the food traditionally without silverware and you eat with your fingers and injera. Everything we tried was flavorful, spiced very well (not too spicy) and really really good. I drove past this place many times over the years but never stopped in, but after working from ho e over the past year and a half, I found I needed to get out for lunch and decided to explore more of my area. I tried Ethiopian once before but didn't love it, and I think it was just a matter of finding the right place. Mitmita changed my mind. I visited every week until I ate my way through the menu. Athena is so friendly in the front of the house and her husband is a phenomenal cook. I really love the Chef's Tibbs, which is lamb cooked with onions and jalapeños. The lamb is perfect - not fatty or gamey at all. The jalapeños can be adjusted to your heat preference. I also really love the Gored Gored, Kitfo, Shrimp Tibbs and Doro Watt as well, and my order would just depend on which protein I'd be in the mood for that day. As for the vegan dishes you can add as your sides, I'm partial to the beets, the cabbage, and the collard greens, but it's all good though. Go and explore. Wow! What an unexpected delight! We ate here on recommendation from the bartender at Wulfhavens Brewery. The restaurant is family owned and operated by Native born Ethiopians. The restaurant is located in a little funky strip mall. It has an ample seating area with Ethiopian decor. We were welcomed with a fragrant delicious spiced aroma and my husband was instantly happy. My husband ordered the Ethiopian beer and I had the honey wine. Both were excellent and my husband loved them both. We ordered the veggie sambusas which were stuffed with lentils and served with a delicious sauce. For my entree I ordered veggie combo and husband ordered the fish tibbs. All dishes are served traditional style with a sour dough crepe bread. No cutlery is provided so all eating is with your hands and the bread. I was recently asked what my favorite type of cuisine was and for some reason the first thing that came to mind was Ethiopian (Habesha...includes Eritrean) food. I think I said it because I hadn't had really good, really authentic Ethiopian food in years...because I love food and picking a fave is not easy. I say all of that to say that I have not found great authentic Ethiopian food in the South. Mitmita is very good, but it is good for newbies who never had Habesha food. If you are Habsha or have lived in a region of the US where there is a Habesha community and you'e had the food, you know what I mean. After leaving Hawaii as a teenager I finished High School in Washington state and I lived in Seattle on and off as an adult for about 3 years total. Seattle has a huge Ethiopian/Eritrean (Habesha) community and you can find Habesha food all over the South End of Seattle. My first time having it I was with a group of Ethiopian friends who took me to lunch when I was 17 and I had the famous Doro Wat. My mouth was on fire, but I just kept eating and eating. There's something so flavorful and different about Habesha food that is irresistible if it is authentically done. Ethiopian food may have been the reason I love and am able to eat spicy foods. So, at Mitmita you will find no such spiciness in the food. I asked if they can make everything authentically Ethiopian hot, but they were honest in that they have to make the food to accommodate the typical American palate. I get it, but it sucks. Every Ethiopian place I have been to in the Southern United States has been this way. I have issues with Chinese take out restaurants for this very reason...not spice, but not getting authentic Chinese cuisine (I usually only eat Chinese food in a China Town where you see Asians eating) . I digress...I really with Mitmita would also accommodate those wanting authentic Ethiopian. They do serve very authentic Ethiopian coffee and the injera is on point. The food here is very flavorful even though it isn't authentically hot. The berbere is a lot lighter in color than I am used to...which is probably due to it not being spicy, and you can see the onions which typically is cut mush smaller and cooked down so that the onions are more incorporated into the sauce. The Doro Wat is still tasty, just not as spiced as I like. The veggie dishes are delicious. I am also used to the lentil dishes being a bit more cooked down. HubbyStanks "thinks" he doesn't like lentils, however at other Ethiopian restaurants I have been able to feed it to him because it looked like meat. At Mitmita the lentils look like lentils and he won't eat them. I do recommend Mitmita. You will not find these flavors in any other cooking (although some items are similar to Indian and other African cuisine the flavor is different). I love that it is closer to my home than the other Ethiopian restaurant in town. The service is also wonderful. The owners are lovely people and they really make you feel at home. Be prepared to eat with your hands...the injera is your utensil! read more

With that said. Let me get into the experience. Mitmita is actually meaning one of the Ethiopian Spice. It can be mixed and make many dish. I like the restaurant reflecting their true calling. The culture of food is use a piece of injera to pick up a bit of entree by hand and eat it. That is how it done to enjoy the different cuisine. We have a group there can try different dishes. Injera is a crepe type sheet for pick up the food. The best dish is the Ye-doro Wat. This is a chicken dish with Ethiopian Ber-bere sauce. The sauce has so many ingredients. It is flavorful. We also order the Kat Wat the chop beef with Ethiopian bbq sauce, Kitfo the lean beef is with the Mitmita sauce, Gored Gored the raw tenderloin beef with amaze sauce. Those are good dishes. Afterward we have Ethiopian coffee with ceremony incense to celebrate special occasions. It was a great celebration. On the appetizers, we have the chicken, veggies, and beef sambusa. Very tasty.
