Orient beach offers a gorgeous environment for passive recreation as well as a paradise for beach goers. There is a 2.1 mile bike path along the park road which stretches along the section of the park called long beach. This road is also the entrance and exit to the park which is situated at the end of this stretch of road. Being part of the bike path it provides for an incredible walk with views of Gardiner's bay on one side and marsh lands on the other. There are many species of Birds and other wildlife life within the park and an amazing and unusual red cedar forest which encompasses the picnic area. Hobbies here include swimming , paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing and a playground for the kiddies . Facilities here are very nice and clean, including a bath room and showers for when you get off the beach. Truly an incredible place to visit at least once in your life, its natural beauty is impressive.

We only had time to take the one tail to the water's edge, but even in semi-overcast, chilly late fall weather, it was slightly challenging, scenic, and DEFINITELY worth a detour, if you're in the area (and just MIGHT need to hike off a BIT of local wine and cheeeeeese!!)

The trails are well marked and it's a nice, scenic hike through the woods. Even better, on a hot day, the trails are under a canopy providing ample shade. Just note that the trails are narrow and there's quite a bit of poison oak along them so use caution. Also note, the entrance on 25A is hidden but noticeable by the red Audubon Society House. Since beaches aren't so easily accessible…read morewithout a day pass (none being offered due to COVID), we needed something to do during our stay that would take a few hours. There's a parking lot where all the trails start, so it's easy to find on google maps. There are 4 different trails you can take, depending on how long you want to spend there. We decided to do the green trail, which is the 2nd to longest trail. The map said it would take 2.5 hours (for 6 miles), but we ended up completing it in about 2 hours at a moderate pace. This trail goes along the shore line, so it was nice and breezy for a lot of it! I liked that it was more of a nature walk with a very well-marked path! Just be prepared for a lot of bug swatting. And also check for ticks at the end! If you come to Shelter Island, I'd highly recommend checking this place out. If you don't have a lot of time, the red trail only takes 45 mins.

All are extremely friendly. Some even look for handouts, although feeding them is frowned upon. Follow the trail signs and you'll find yourself gazing at the sea and surrounding areas. I brought my cousin yesterday and we had such a wonderful time strolling through the forest. Along the way we saw squirrels, chipmunks, turkeys, birds, and even a mole--which he actually saved and returned to a nearby hole in the ground! He wasn't too interested in holding his hands out for the birds to land on (one of the most magical parts of this place), but he absolutely loved the beach at the end of the trail. It's a beautiful mix of forest and shoreline, peaceful and full of life. Can't wait to come back!

Hiking at just over a 1 1/2 miles, this is a pack in pack out park, with no restrooms. The trails are not well marked and you can lose yourself in the fantastic maze. The lake is not easily seen from the trail, but the lake provides watering spots for the pups. An excellent stop through wine country to catch your breath and grab a walk.
