One of my favorite places in the world. Wonderful woods and spectacular views. A real treasure. So lucky to have this gem nearby.

Camped here with our dog on Fourth of July weekend. Got the day permit for 4x4 beach off roading. What a beautiful beach and park. The hike around the lighthouse peninsula overlooking Gardiner Bay was spectacular. Only down fall was the ticks, they will rain down on your like no place I've ever been and I live in Connecticut. Come prepared with bug repellents and stay vigilant about checking yourself. Keep a hat on your head. Bring a tick key for easy removal. Had 2 attached to myself, two days after we came home...Probably came home with us on our dog, he had a great time swimming here. read more

Great park, camp sites are big and wooded. Location is GREAT, Support staff is questionable... Running a leaf blower in a pristine wooded forest at 8am for HOURS is just not necessary. I appreciate keeping up the grounds and maintaining the roads so they are safe to drive on, but maybe doing that at a later hour, or on a weekday when people are trying to enjoy the quiet forest on the weekend. read more

There is a nice enough beach accessible from the campground. Otherwise the sites are mostly tiny and on top of each other. Quiet hours aren't enforced. RVs pumping their generators, people blasting music, and kids screaming til all hours. A miserable stay tbh. read more

Each site offers a water tap... Bathrooms aren't far from the sites. Make sure you're around to watch the sunset at their beach. Walk down to the islip which is about about a mile walk out. At the end there is a light house that you can Explore. Don't forget to bring your 4-legged fur babies! read more

We came here in a tent and it was fourth of July weekend. It is nice and woodsy, a beautiful camp site but there were many problems. Pros -near Montauk beaches - lots of trees + woodsy - large campsites Cons - loud parties - felt more like an extended picnic than a camping trip considering the attitude of people (they were straight up obnoxious with the music at 3 am) - filthy bathrooms; one bathroom had toilet paper all over the stalls and the other bathroom had poop in every toilet expect one which had pee all over it - only one bathroom with hot water showers - no fire rings provided and no ground fires allowed Overall, I would not go back nor recommend this place. Without a doubt, I found the place pretty. The "beach" on the campsite was gorgeous to look at. It had no lifeguard and had rocky sand so it wasn't a beach to stay at. I don't want to totally bash the place as some issues were likely because of the events however it could have been a lot better than it was. read more

This is another hidden gem favorite of mine for camping. The Good: This county park is a hidden gem. History (Grey Gardens family orig. ownership of the land) and natural beauty (Long Island Sound) abound. You can camp here for about $40 (give or take) a night depending on the campsite area and busy /on / off season rates. Campsites here may seem expensive; however, this park (and its camping facilities) is / are a much more preferable choice given the super pricy (yet crappy / seedy) motel rooms in / around the area. Only 15 to 20 short minutes north of East Hampton town proper. Campsites are not your typical peaceful / quiet ones during the busy season (i.e. loud / boisterous / obnoxious New Yorkers / [citiots]). You should (perhaps a must) use your GPS device to mark your campsite and the park entrance. Also GPS mark the key points between the park entrance and East Hampton town proper. ++MAJOR CAVEAT++You MUST know (or be) someone who resides (as in rents or owns property) in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY and you will need that person / those persons to reserve your campground online (or by phone) AND to check you in when you arrive. If you do know someone, then they can quickly / easily hook you up via: http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/departments/parks.aspx. If you don't know someone, I would suggest that you ask around on social media and maybe find a person you know obliquely / peripherally. Nearby Hither Hills State Park, in Ammagansett, NY is also great relatively inexpensive alternative; however, with that place (a NY State Park campground) you need to book there way, way (weeks if not months) in advance. In the case of Hither Hills State Park you must book online via www.reserveamerica.com) The Bad: You will need a tent and sleeping bag. The park gets very dark with low to zero visibility at night. The park camping check-in office closes early. When it gets dark, there are NO lights / zero visibility (don't forget your flashlight). There are so many campsites in this park that it is easy to get lost / disoriented (use your GPS to mark your campsite location). You must know someone who resides (rents or owns property) in Suffolk County, NY and you will need that person to reserve your campground for you and to check you in. Bottom Line: Best overall option for lodging (i.e. camping) in The Hamptons; however, you must know someone who rents or owns property in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY in order to stay here. If you don't know someone who can get you access to camping / lodging, the park is still very much worth checking out for sightseeing / historical context purposes. read more

Who would have thought that a mere 2 1/2 hours or so from NYC lies a world of natural beauty. Ladies and gents, welcome to the Hamptons. If any of you have any sort of beef with this part of Long Island, then I'm guessing you've only experienced the Boardy Barn, Drift and other assorted "hot" spots. Yet if you simply drive a little farther east on Montauk Highway (aka Rt 27), you will find yourself in the more down to earth East Hampton. Cedar Point is located about 30min northwest of Montauk. This 607 acre park offers campsites, nature trails, and access to Gardiners Bay. For $24 per night, you can rent a site, pitch a tent, cook some burgers, go for a swim (keep an eye out for jellies when the tide changes), rent a canoe, or play beach volleyball (borrow a ball from the snack shack). There are surprisingly clean bathrooms, complete with showers, and a snack shack that opens early and closes relatively late (coffee, food, drinks, snacks, camping necessities). They also show movies for free on Saturdays I think. I have camped here twice so far this summer and I had an absolute blast on both occasions. Cedar Point seems to be very popular and was pretty crowded, mostly with families. The campsites however are large enough to offer a certain degree of privacy. While you're there, be sure to wake up early for the sunrise, and don't forget to visit Montauk as well. read more

I went there with a friend in mid September. We had called a week earlier trying to ask if we needed to make a reservation for a camp site. The person answering the phone ensured us that the park would not be packed and that we could come on down day of, and still get a spot. What a relief. When we got to the check in office, which is right at the entrance to the camp site, we were told to drive around the camp site and find a space that we liked. We circled back around and they gave us our 'ticket' 30$/night it was for the 2 of us, with just a small SUV and a tent. They do have a snack shop/ general goods store. Its ran by a single person, so its a bit slow on the morning side. They offer almost everything that you would need for a fun family camping trip. Canned goods, first aid, towels, blankets, you name it, they got something like it! Plenty of nice clean bathrooms. THey also accommodate for big RV's too which was kinda neat seeing. There are no firepits on any of the camp sites, but you are allowed to bring in your own if you have one. They are also available for purchase from the general goods store for ~16$ and then 6$ for wood. (My suggestion is that you go to a grocery store before hand and pick up some fire wood for much cheaper and in greater quantity. There were plenty of houses that were selling them on the side of the road leading up to the camp site.) Overall a great place. Friendly staff. 4/5 stars only because it was a DRY camp site, meaning we could not drink there. read more

Great for beginners. Great for family car camping ! Visited this past weekend 6/24/16 for a few days on a girls trip. Most lots (there are about 600) have active water taps, however, a few do not (at this time-- likely under construction bevause there were "markers" in place). I asked about this tick season and workers said it was a bit rough so we drove to find a very clear lot with less shade (dry and sandy-- #134) to avoid the critters. It happened to not have an active water tap but the bathroom (comfort station) was a stones throw away plus there were a few shadier unoccupied lots with water taps that we could run to. --bathrooms are decent (hot water!!). If you want more then dont go camping- stay at an inn and visit the outer beach or sag harbor. We stood central to the 4 color-coded camp grounds. Right at the intersection. There are some awesome spots for intermediate and expert campers on the outer edge of the grounds. We had no bug related issues and ran into NO ONE with complaints about critters. We may have been overly cautious since we are beginners... Quiet time begins at 10pm and ends at 8am. Also, no one is around to truly enforce the alcohol restrictions so if you're behaving, you will remain under the radar. Plan to go back again!!! read more

I really hate to camp. But the several times I've been here to visit friends who are camping at Cedar Point, I have to say I was very amazed that such a beautiful humongous natural haven existed just a few miles away from where I live. It's got lakes, bays, forests with paths, a park with swings and other contraptions for kids to climb all over. People come to camp overnight and bond with their kids over a campfire, boy scouts come to hike the trails, others row their boats or just watch the wildlife (quail, deer, wild turkeys and more). It's pretty organized, so a camping newb like myself would probably not get too lost. The area where you check in is pretty security oriented and so I have always felt safe sending my son there for an overnight camping trip. You couldn't pay me to go camping, but if I were to sleep outside in nature fighting off mosquitoes and strange nighttime sounds, then this would be a perfect place to do it. read more

It is sometimes shocking to people that the "Hamptons" is a place of amazing natural beauty. The unspoiled parts of the area are really why the East End flourishes. The top-ten beach is the obvious draw. However. the bay and woods to the north easily rival the sandy Atlantic coast. A great way to experience the area as it was hundreds of years ago is Cedar Point County Park. It is simply rapturous. All it takes is a short ride north and a pair of old shoes and you'll be able to enjoy one of East Hampton's (and the East Coast's) most awe-inspiring places. Not being a camper, I cannot clue you into the overnight stuff. What I can recommend is my simple approach to the park: drive or bike north to the park...stop at a pretty spot...wander around. My favorite time is in the fall, when the crowds are busy with their lives elsewhere. Usually, my footsteps are all you can hear - other than a breeze through the oaks and pines or the rustle of deer in the distance. Aside from the quiet beauty of the forest, the magnificent bay views are splendid. As you gaze at the low mass of Shelter Island in the distance, you can imagine what the settlers from England or the Mantaukeet scouts saw 300 years ago. And it is all compliments of Suffolk County. read more

Hi, this is a terrific public camp ground. THe bathrooms are clean, people are friendly. Theresa who works at the park is the most knowledgeable and personable of all the people working there. Great place to fish, and if you have a 4 wheel drive you can go on the beach. Nice wooded areas to walk. A long walk to what was a light house, and is now a light on a pole. Lots of people caught blue fish, big ones too. Bring your own fire pit, and ask if your site has water. No one seems to know which site has what so, be flexible. Great site store, snacks, breakfast etc. Friendly people and a movie Saturday night outdoors was a life saver- got rid of the kids for a few hours. Freezing- needed blankets We had a terrific time. read more

Though (as Elsa K. points out,) this park can some-tymes be booked and full of families, the grounds of East Hampton's Cedar Point County Park can also turn out to a nice piece of earth on which to seek solace and refuge, a very desolate place, if you time it right: The only living souls I saw in my last venture here were of the magnificent white tail deer and wild turkey orders. A fine acreage of woods. Aside from the activities Elsa posted, you can shoot your boom-stick at local waterfowl, or dance or meditate to try and meet your animal totems. I took a walk on the beach to check out the 1868 (abandoned) lighthouse, which according to outdated maps and local elders, was originally set-off on an island, until The Wind Spirit "transformed the shoreline" and connected it to the mainland via a natural, mile-long peninsula. The building is bricked up now and assumably only houses the ghosts of navigators. I would not know for sure. . . I have not been inside. read more

Did a weekend camping trip the end of last September with friends. Had a relaxing time since the camp wasn't packed. Loved the smell/feel of the upcoming autumn season in the evenings and the last strains of warm summer weather during the daytime. As everyone has stated, this is a very well provided for camp with showers and an on-site store. The only disclaimer I must say is that their maps are not very useful. Way out of scale and can be frustrating navigating around if new to the place. I'd say you guys hire my friend Cynthea and she'd be more than happy to make you guys an accurate camp map. Also, make sure to bring your own fire-pit-holder-of-some-sorts since that wasn't provided and making a fire on the direct sand is not allowed. Also, make sure to explore the beautiful hiking trail: Cedar Point Nature Trail (the entrance is right by the office) enhanced by the changing of the seasons. read more

Nice park to visit if you're heading to the Hampton or at least around the area. The park is well maintained and has a very nice lake where you can take a stroll and just relax. I think in the summer time you can rent a row boat and go around the lake. read more

They are short staffed. No plumber. Or maybe he appears once in a while. Flushing toilets is not easy and a lot of people can't do it. The pump out station has a bad leak 24/7. basic preventive maintenance has not been done. Bathrooms are cleaned once a week . tent camping is horrible. The people who have generators don't shut them off at 9 pm like they are supposed to. People blast music to overcome the generators. The only ranger comes through at 9 am when there is nothing to do. And they don't call it skeeeter point for nothing. The best spots down by the Water, the only area with a breeze at night , are off limits. The camping area is one big dust bowl. You will feel so clean once you get home. Some showers are ok, some are a hoax. I always leave a campsite cleaner than I found it and this one took a while. Broken glass , you name it. I camped twice recently. One weekend and then a midweek. I would never do a weekend again. read more

We are probably good for three campouts at Cedar Point County Park a summer. The campsites are sufficient, some a bit smaller than others. We like that you can get out to the beach and enjoy a nice swim in warm weather. This year however, I've noticed a distinct decline in the cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers, not enough to keep us away, but something that could use definite improvement. Also, the check in at times can be interminably long. They want a green key, car registration AND driver's license. The system should be automated at check in. Great location and easy access to Montauk. read more

DO NOT CAMP HERE, especially in a tent!! This park is absolutely disgusting. The bathrooms are filthy. THERE'S NO FIRE PITS IN THE CAMPSITES??? So you would have to bring your own if you wanted to start a fire. The beach is kind of pretty but has a lot of rocks and shells so it may be uncomfortable if you wanted to swim and hang out there. Our campsite was dirty when we came in with bottle caps all over the ground and the picnic table was kind of gross. People do whatever they want because there is no one patrolling the park. The people near us all were up late, with kids crying, constantly turning their cars on and shining lights into our tents and just be generally loud and inconsiderate. They bought? or just took the sight next onto our's to just park their cars because they had so many people. There was also a big party, that may have been a wedding reception or a family reunion, that sounded like they had a DJ blasting music. If you come here, be prepared to stay up all night! I went camping at Smith Point (IN MASTIC) and it was better than this! I am NEVER coming back here!! (Also, some clown who made one of the signs spelled "social distanceing" with an E, and I feel like that represents the vibe of the park) read more

Tiny campsites cramped together, 4 people per site max, $30 for a primitive campsite per night, greedy organization it became, staff is not polite at all, very inundating with all kinds of regulations, no hammocks? can't tie a tarp to a tree when its raining? very noisy, they come and check on everyone every hour during the day, harassing people. unless you're the Suffolk county resident you pay twice the amount, no military discount. For the price they charge they need to cleanup the bushes at least once a year, many bottles and garbage. If you're late 1hr past check out time on Sunday you will be literally asked to leave and have to pay another $25. And I've been to this place many times and had a great experience, but something is going on with the management these days. Two nights for 6 people will cost you $120, plus $50 if you're 1hr late to check out.... think twice. Oh, and the ticks situation is simply out of control. Beyond that, if you go away from the camping area, you can enjoy some nice nature and the beach, unless they ruin your mood for doing that. ) read more

Cedar Point is a true Gem. A Jewel of the Suffolk County Park system. A hidden treasure. The most amazing sunsets. Fishing is awesome., Hiking trails are great for hiking, bird watching, scenery and to see all the beautiful animals of Cedar Point. This park is a MUST see!!! I will say though, just remember that you are in the the wilderness. Do not walk in leafy areas or in high grass areas. Do not let your pets go in these areas. It is the woods. Ticks are here and you just have to wear light colored clothing, Insect spray and check yourself often. You will be fine. read more

You don't have to be a Suffolk resident to camp here. It's just cheaper if you are. 2 tents allowed per site, and 2 cars I think. Here's a MAJOR caveat if you bring a pet: make sure you bring a valid Rabies certificate from your vet or they aren't getting in. There are showers available and water taps on each site. Some people ignore the quiet hours, cranking music all hours. No one policing anything. Staff does a good job of collecting garbage. Beautiful beach but it's the bay so don't expect ocean waves. Beach is a little rocky, but its mostly round stones nothing sharp! They have a basketball court and volleyball court, also a baseball field, which is a backstop on a mowed lawn. The camp store is closed, would be convenient if they re-opened. Nearest store is about a 10-15 minute drive so grab all of your ice etc. before its too late! Great fun for kids, good for beginner campers!! Don't forget the bug spray!!! read more

This is a five star campground, minus the massive amount of lone star ticks on the grounds. Cons: First trip in June 2014 I found 1 tick in my hair, my son had 1 on his back. Our trip in August we found a disgusting amount of nymphs on everyone of us that went - 12 people! My nephew was covered in them. Perhaps they need to spray their grounds during these months. Pros: Well kept. Bathrooms clean. Friendly staff. Nice convenient store, good egg sandwiches in the morning. Can watch the sunset. Nice playground. The small beach has small waves. Movie night on saturdays, make sure you have a flashlight for the way back to your spot, it gets very dark. Tips: Buy the green key if you plan on going multiple times. Bring bathing suit. Bring firewood and metal fire pit (can be purchased at convienant store). Wear bug spray! There is only one road leading to campground, leave early in the morning. Took us 2 1/2 hours from Stony Brook, NY. read more

It is expensive to camp - so we opted out of that - but we stopped by on a Saturday eveningish to check out the sunset and the corner store. My husband and I decided to split a burger and it was WAY more delicious than we thought it would be. Looks can be deceiving. Plus, the husband and wife that own that store have been there for over 30 years - we never have a problem supporting local. read more

Stayed there in a tent over the weekend with my fiance. Very disappointed in the maintenance of the bathrooms and showers, which is the only thing they really have to take care of anyway. Bathrooms smelled like piss all the time and someone actually defecated in the shower stall! I can rough it any day of the year but when all i am looking for is a clean toilet and shower every day and can't get it I'm not a happy camper. This was my first visit to Cedar Point and will be my last! We will search for another campground next time around. Totally gross! read more
