This was one of the most incredible meals I've had in a long time.
The restaurant is in a stately former seminary at the heart of a vineyard. It's a place that feels timeless, the decor is refined and understated, not needlessly chic or extravagant. Being on vacation neither of us had especially dressy clothes, but it turned out that many of the diners were similarly casual.
Dining early on a Sunday night, everyone we had talked to around Napier recommended we get a reservation, so we called ahead. When we arrived it seemed unnecessary, but the dining room pretty quickly filled in after us.
We started with a taster platter of each of their starters It was presented beautifully on a cutting board, and I appreciate when a good restaurant portions the starter appropriately for 2 people. We each got a good taste of the Scallop Escabeche sachimi, a black pudding terrine, shiitake carpaccio, fried squid, and seared prawns. I paired this with a Gewurztraminer, which worked well. the scallop and squid were my favorite. I'm not big on mushrooms, but the shiitake carpaccio worked very well.
For my main course I had a crispy duck breast over pecorino risotto. The duck was heavenly, and the risotto was a perfect foundation of creamy rice and bites of duck confit. I paired this with a fantastically dry Cab Franc, followed by a Pinot Noir. My friend had a seared lamb that was excellent.
For dessert I had a wonderful pinot noir ice cream served over a goats cheese mouse, and sprinkled with pistachio granola. Seeing their reasonably priced digestif list, I closed the night with a glass of Lagavulin. read more
