Platter to share - so delicious!
Georgie B.

To me, summer days = platters, wine(s) and picnics. And the perfect place for these summer days? Church Road Winery of course! Having been fans of Church Road Winery for a long time, we decided to have lunch here. You have the option to sit inside and outside or relax on a picnic blanket on the grass, which is what we chose to do. For lunch, we ordered wines - highly recommend their 2017 Rose, which was perfect, and a platter to share. We loved all the different options on the platter, featuring Maharaja chutney, marinated olives, pickled vegetables, cured meats, basil pesto, cherry vine tomato salsa, smoked salmon dip, arancini balls, citrus prawns, Hohepa Danbo cheese and Whitestone Brie, served with crackers, croutes and house made bread.  Although we shared this between two, you could definitely share it between three. The house made bread was still warm out of the oven and the Maharaja chutney was divine, so much so, we bought a few jars from the gift shop afterwards.  While we didn't do either, wine tastings and museum tours are also available at Church Road Winery.

The grounds are as beautiful as the yelp photos show, even in winter. The water features are lovely, the large resort style couches relaxing, and the floor to ceiling glass windows gave the tasting room a modern appeal. The scenery is truly incredible with both the view of the vineyards as well as the nearby ocean. Whether you're relaxing on the couches with the ocean view, enjoying the architecture in the tasting room, or marveling at the vineyards from the restaurant, there are no bad views here. We tried the tasting flight and overall enjoyed the wines and the friendly conversation from the American woman who poured for us. We sampled the wines while reclining on one of the couches and nomming a cheese plate. The cheese plate was very tasty. The olives had a delicious and intensely interesting flavor and a good variety of cheeses. Our favorite wines were the Chardonnay and Merlot Cabernet. Overall a very nice vineyard and tasting room. We regret we did not have more time to try the restaurant, but the snack and wines we had were good, the views were even better.

They also have quite a few old bottles on display. The entrance is very beautiful and make sure to check out the bottle in the floor of the doorway when you walk through the entrance. The wine tasting was pleasant and the person giving it was knowledgeable. We tasted both whites and reds, but we didn't end up buying anything. Our tour guide gave us a mission estate wine glass as a moment though, so that was sweet. Aside from the wine tastings they do in the main area, there is also a restaurant off to the side that I don't think is affiliated with the winery part. There is a nice backyard area with pretty views and flowers.

I am from Sonoma County, California (a huge wine region) and was so happy to go wine tasting in New Zealand. Black Barn Vineyards looked like just the place! This place definitely reminded me of Napa in it's architecture - it's fancy, designed modernly, trendy. Though this may seem intimidating, it's actually a super friendly place and the staff was very welcoming. We walked in and had a tasting with a guy who really had his spiel down. He picked us a fig from the tree outside to pair with the sauv blanc, which went really well together. We did a full tasting and loved all of the wines. I particularly liked a few of the reds, and they did a great rose. We bought a glass for outside and had some fries in the vines - what a fantastic little outside patio they have! Black Barn is a great place to chill out for the day with a bottle or glass of wine in the sun. They had some adorable little rugs with bean bag chairs, which would be amazing to hang out on if they were shaded. All in all, I'd definitely recommend and will totally visit again if I ever get back to Hawkes Bay!

We were greeted by a really nice staff member who poured our tastings and explained the grapes in the region. The tasting is 7.50 NZD which is waved if you make a wine purchase. Overall the wines we tried were pretty good and we were particularly fond of the Riesling. The restaurant was gorgeous and we were happy we stopped in here for lunch. With both a beautiful inside and outside seating area there were lots of beautiful views to choose from. Service was a little relaxed, but we enjoyed a perfectly prepared steak with candied beets, a chicken roulade, seasoned potatoes and a couple glasses of wine for about 100 NZD. Everything about the meal was spot on from the presentation to the execution. We were very happy we didn't pass this place up!

If memory serves me correctly I got to try 5 wines for $10 and even got a 6th on the house so I could compare two similar wines which was very nice. Each wine of was of course explained to me and then I was left to my sipping. I came about an hour and a half before closing time so everybody was busy cleaning up but they still sat me. Our guide was responsive to my comments and offered 3 additional wines to sample! My favorite was a dry rosé. The orchard itself is beautiful and there are outside seating options for nice weather. We sat inside, and due to the structure of the tasting room, it became very loud when a few guests arrived after us. The sound reverberated quite a bit. For a $10 wine tasting, it was a nice experience.

We drove up, and the tasting room looks like it's in their corporate office. You can literally see the office through glass windows from the tasting room. Slight buzzkill. It doesn't seem as though the whole ambiance is really thought out, it seemed a bit thrown together. All good though, I came to taste wine, not to see a beautiful tasting room (I saved that for other wineries). The tasting fee is $7.50 per person, waived with a purchase. We walked in, excited to try the wines that Google people said were so good. When we got in the tasting room, there was one other couple in there. The woman working behind the counter completely ignored us for a solid 5 minutes after we closed the door behind us. I'm not sure why, but it got to the point where I asked my boyfriend if we should just leave. She kept trying to force conversation with the other couple instead of acknowledging us. It was a bit awkward. When she finally came around, she explained the tasting process to us. She obviously had her little speil down, and she went through it, giving us minimal information on each wine while we tasted. We were the only people in there after starting our tasting, and I'm not sure why she didn't want to talk to us, but she obviously didn't. Maybe she was having a rough day. I asked her a few questions about the wines and aging (I worked in wine for 3 years, so I speak the language), but she seemed bored and uninterested in having a conversation with us. Anyway, the wines were good, and we bought one, but we felt so awkward being there that we kind of just tried to get out as quickly as possible. All in all, the location is very mediocre (not a beautiful winery), the staff was not the friendliest, but the wine was good.

Nick, who owns the company was our guide and did a wonderful job. we wanted to explore and taste some of the wine from the region so having had great success with wine guides in other parts of the world (Bordeaux, Tuscany, Stellenbosch, McLaren Vale and Piedmont) we searched out and found Nick. We arranged everything via email and I asked for small boutique wineries preferably family-run that are doing unique and interesting things. Our half day, private-tour more than met those requirements with Nick guiding us to some real gems that we never would had experienced setting out on our own. Nick is a very genial fellow and fun to talk with. Originally from the UK, he has made his home here In Napier for 12 years and is an amateur wine maker and hobby farmer himself. His price for our tour (he picked us up and dropped us off at our B&B) was VERY reasonable. You do pay your own tasting fees at the winery but we only had to do this at one winery and it was only NZ$8 per person. Nick customizes trips based on the interests of his clients and even made adjustments the night before when I called him up to reconfirm. A great way to spend the afternoon. He also does sight-seeing tours around the Napier area. Highly recommended

We stopped by the tasting room first which had a large wooden tasting bar and warm red painted walls. The large windows open up to reveal the vineyards and lush green grounds. We enjoyed a tasting and particularly liked the Riesling and the Syrah. We decided to have lunch out on the restaurant patio which overlooks the beautiful green lawn, the pond with relaxing water features, and of course the beautiful mountain range. The setting is picturesque and one of the highlights of our trip. I ordered steak and the husband had a chicken main and they were presented like works of art. This is an absolute must see and plan to dine here if you're a foodie, you won't be disappointed.
