Craggy Range came highly recommended by someone I never question when it comes to wine...my mother-in-law, a seasoned global winery connoisseur. And let me just say: she nailed it. Lucky for us, a canceled hike (thanks to some moody NZ weather) turned into an impromptu detour to wine country, and what a silver lining it was.
From the moment we drove in, we were floored. The estate is absolute perfection. Picture manicured grounds, jaw-dropping mountain views, and not a single blade of grass out of place. It's the kind of setting that makes you want to exhale a little slower and soak it all in.
We opted for the $55 NZD tasting, which was worth every cent. Our host, Mackenzie, was kind, knowledgeable, and guided us through each pour with ease and passion. I even found myself swooning over their Chardonnay (a varietal I don't usually lean toward), but the true standout was the Sophia Cabernet. Rich, smooth, and unforgettable. We paired the tasting with a charcuterie board that was next-level. Not even a crumb of blue cheese survived. Enough said.
The tour itself was stunning and there's not a bad view on the property. Of course, we didn't leave empty-handed. We picked up a few bottles (which credited the tasting fee), including a couple of Sophias to save for future celebrations, or to impress the aforementioned mother-in-law on her next visit. Bonus points secured!
If you're near Hawke's Bay, Craggy Range is a must. Gorgeous grounds, standout wines, and a tasting experience that checks all the boxes.
May you stay, forever young!
