I was hoping and expecting to be able to have French quality again after having super flaky, melty croissants in France. I was a little disappointed, but still glad this place is near me and doing well despite being surrounded by a bunch of coffee shops. What disappointed me were the stalwart basics: both the croissant and pain au chocolat had extra tough and hard exteriors. The dough was way too dense. The bottom of the croissant layers were not able to separate and had an unpleasant doughy taste. The pain au raisin didn't taste remarkable at first but at the very end the buttery, custardy flavor finally hit my taste buds, which left me wanting more. The apricot pastry was also nice, caramelized almonds and a crunchy flaky base. Though I have to say all the pastries were over-baked and over-browned, likely one of the reasons for the tough exterior. Maybe I'll be more impressed with the bread the next time I visit.

A lovely little specialist shop of the kind that you only seem to really be able to find in smaller…read moretowns. This is filled with cheeses from all round the world, with lots of local specialities as well as more exotic types. The cheeses are often of the whiffy variety but are really something to be tried. They often have samples out and the sales assistants are very helpful and willing to advise you. Some of the varieties are on the expensive side but there are things for smaller budgets as well.

You get a very personal service in here, and they are a nice independent retailer. Although a little pricey, the occasional treat is worth it, and you get what you pay for. The have a good variety on display and even have gift presents for your loved ones for you to buy. The shelves aren't too over stocked, but they do have a large variety of sweets, chocolates and candy for you to choose from. Try the fruit centre's - they wont disappoint. I will visit again and this place has my seal of approval.

Pierre and his wife run the store and they really are so friendly and offer a completely tailored service. Pierre obviously cares about his customers and will give you a guided tour of all the wonderful and artfully created chocolates on display, even letting you sample a few on the house. This is no Thorntons! Each piece is a work of art, from dark chocolate dipped cherries and orange peel to Champagne truffles; everything is beautifully made and packaged making a gift from Chouchoute a real treat. I always come here to buy presents for family and have a chat with Pierre. Everyone should sample some chocolates from this shop - you'll never settle for Roses again, that's for sure! All the pastry has the unmistakable individual hallmarks of good, shop-made products. Eric Lyons also stock home-made pickles, chutneys, and the more unusual Madhuban Honey Garden (the perfect brand name for Indian influenced cuisine made in rural England), fresh and hand-made curry sauces. On the drive over here I was discussing with my driver my considering being a vegan. All that is in doubt now that I am positioned over the meat cabinet on the other side of the shop. It's filled with traditional chops and steaks, and some more unusual products. Turkey Balti sausages are another example of Indian meets English, and while I wont' be buying them in the warmth of late May, they are a top contender for Boxing Day supper. We leave with two chilli burgers and two minted lamb burgers, for an early evening barbeque, but I'll return for a proper mission here later this year and I'll be sure to have plenty of room in the freezer.

From meat to chicken to pork sausages, these are some of the things you will find here. I have brought some sausages and cooked them at home. They tasted brilliant and I ended up having some hot dogs. I have also brought some chicken legs and thighs from here and used them to make a Thai Green Chicken curry. Again the chicken itself was excellent and I have no doubts I will be back. I do have to travel some way to get to Handsworth from West Bromwich but it is worth the travelling because I know I am guaranteed quality food from here. Staff are excellent which makes this place even better.
