Great vibe, lively music, dee-lish desserts featuring gelato and nice range of gorgeous looking…read morelittle cakes lined up to tempt us from the display fridge. We called in after enjoying a lovely Vietnamese dinner in Crows Nest and were not in mood for Asian dessert. When would anybody ever be in the mood for Asian desserts. Besides, come to think of it I don't think I've ever tasted a great Asian dessert - ever. I mean the choice is clear isn't it. Asian dessert - Italian dessert - it's a no brainer. And I reckon that's why you don't see many overweight Asians - cos their desserts are so unappealing. Luckily for us just a short stroll around the corner was Sparrow. We swooped in on the last available table and watched the people coming in and lining up for their sweet fix of super yum gelato. Yum! We ordered coffee gelato in a crisp sugar cone and fig gelato in a cup. The fig gelato was so lovely and figgy - even had those teeny weeny fig seeds which added a nice crunch. And guess what!? Clam chowder has come to Crows Nest. Yes, that's right, now Sparrow features Clam Chowder for lunch. Definitely gonna sample this. Stay tuned for my clam chowder review. After chowing down in the famous pierside chowder houses in Monterey California AKA the Clam Chowder Mecca of the world I believe I can offer a half decent review of clam chowder.

In Crow's Nest, a Sparrow is taking over. After a lovely lunch (which consisted of dessert, too),…read morewe all migrated to Sparrow for some of their famous gelato. But it is more than just a gelateria. It is a café that, in addition to making simply delicious sandwiches and salads, also offers a brunch. Retro in feel, Sparrow is very cozy on the inside with dark chairs and wooden walls. There's also an outdoor patio where you can enjoy your food. The showcase of gelato is right in the front, so you can't miss it. You'll find some traditional flavors like chocolate and vanilla, but what you should really try is some of the more unique tastes. Among the best I tried were the pear and rhubarb (so good!) and blood orange. Even if you don't like fruit-flavored ice cream, there are some richer flavors that will surely satisfy you, like the chocolate toffee crunch. One scoop of gelato is around $4. Likewise, the items on the menu are quite affordable with everything under $15. If you find yourself on the North shore on a sunny afternoon, you should pay Sparrow a visit.

Ok so this store is probably a-dime-a-dozen in Chatswood or Cabramatta, but I probably wouldn't…read moredrive that far to stock up on frozen prata and tinned bean shoots, but they are cupboard (or fridge) staples in our house and I'm glad to have this Asian version of a corner store a bit closer to home. Think I'd pass on the fresh vegetable section, which sits out on Military Road and looks like it has worn the exhaust fumes just a little too long, but inside it's like being back in Chinatown ... a wealth of Asian ingredients and flavours that you can't find in Coles. I'm not a fan of Asian sweets, but there are plenty of those on the checkout counter, and some of those odd sweet/savoury mixes that seem to be so popular there. Plus rice in large quantities and a choice of ice cream flavours from durian to red bean.

This was one of those gems I found using Yelp. Let me set the scene for you: I'm in Woolies…read morefrantically looking for vegan oyster sauce, mirin and these salty PKU,s I don't remember the name of. Do you think I can find any of the above ingredients? No! So I open Yelp, I type 'Asian grocer' and this place is only 200m away. So I hop skip it out of Woolies and end up here, Passing the "fresh" selection of veggies out the front, I made my way in and as a very white male, had no idea where to start. My deer-in-headlights look must've been obvious because the shop keeper came out from behind the counter and asked if he cold help. I rattled off my list of ingredients while he scoured the store and came back with everything I needed - some with multiple options! I also walked out with a solid collection of tea, enough rice to feed a small nation and some vegan ice cream. Since then, I've been back a number of times and always have a brilliant experience.

It feels strange to be writing a review for an establishment I've never set foot inside…read more It's even stranger when that establishment happens to be my favourite cafe in Sydney. And it's strangerer still when I've only ever tried one menu item. Is strangerer a word? I don't know, ask my lawyer. I've been to Ciccio probably 40 out of the last 52 weekends. This is a conservative estimate. (I'm not sure what I was doing the other 12, if you were wondering). Here's why Ciccio straight up rules: 1) The long, wide wooden bench running down the outside of the cafe. Between 9am and 2pm this place gets more sun than the surface of the sun itself. That may sound improbable but any scientist will back me up here. 2) The one massive, old wooden table under the umbrella (if you're an albino, or easily flammable, this is where you want to be sitting. Forget the little aluminium table-and-chair sets, they're poxy and the tables lurch from side to side). 3) The caramel lattes (diabetically sweet, homicidally delicious) and the gyoza dumplings. Not technically a breakfast food, but I've never eaten anything else here. There's a new menu now that I'm assured is very good, and Gyoza doesn't feature on it - but the owner always keeps some on ice for me. I don't know what I'd do if they said they didn't have any one day. They're very good, is my point. And it makes me feel like a big man on campus ordering something that isn't on the menu - I suggest you try it . 4) The Japanese staff are cuter than Pokemons. In fact, I'm not sure some of them *aren't* Pokemon. They don't even insult me by giving me a menu anymore, they simply smile and bring me my coffee and gyoza. It feels good to be a regular. Reals good. 5) They're dog-friendly, bringing out bowls of water and little bone-shaped cookies for our furry pals. One of the newer waitresses is scared of dogs, unfortunately, but watching her panic when a puppy tries to lick her is funnier than anything Judd Apatow does. 6) Never packed, always nice and relaxed. And the people-watching is off the charts, if you're into that sort of thing. What I don't like about Ciccio: 1) They tried switching from pork to prawn gyoza without telling me. I noticed immediately. They never made that mistake again.

Monday 8am in the suburbs and scavenging for a cafe brew. People was open - woo hoo. I ordered my…read moresoya mocha and sat down. "I'm so sorry we're out of soya". Oh no, that's all I can have. The supermarket across the square was still closed yet five minutes later, voulor! the lovely Asian girl comes back with two cartons of soya, I suspect borrowed from the restaurant next door. The extra effort and the fact that it came in a mug rather than a glass which I prefer helped my Monday get off to a good start. The jazz - Sinatra, Sammy and co - playing subtly in the background eased me into a cheery morning too. The Vittoria coffee was smooth - pretty standard flavor but well made. I asked for it extra hot and it came hot without burning the milk which is common. They have a decent selection of scrumptious looking cakes and muffins but also have a breakfast and lunch menu. Breakfast picks are Double Smoked Ham and Gruyere Cheese Toastie ($8.50), Organic House Bakes Muesli ($11) and the Bacon and Egg Frittata with tomato relish ($11). Lunch picks are Chicken Katsu ($13), Pumpkin and Feta Filo ($8.50) and Chicken Burrito with chilli jam, sour cream and fresh lime ($12). No Wifi. Light and airy with cushioned wall seats. High chairs and outdoor seating.
